Turning the spotlight on Roberto Rosales

A new name linked with the right-back spot
According to reports in the local press, and indeed the agent of the player, Newcastle United are looking at the possibility of signing 23-year-old FC Twente right-back Roberto Rosales.

It’s not a name we’ve been linked with before, and as the attention has been put on names such as Nathaniel Clyne and Mathieu Debuchy, as well as Danny Simpson and his contract wrangle, I think it’s only fair to have a look at what the Venezuelan could offer NUFC.

According to said reports, Rosales could be available for as little as £3 million, and at that price and age you would have to think we’ve at least had a look at him as he fits neatly into the current Newcastle United transfer blueprint.

So what do we know about Rosales then? Apart from the fact he is 23, plays for FC Twente and represents Venezuela, can we gather any more information on him?

Previously he played for his hometown club in Caracas although he only made two appearances before being snapped up Belgian side AA Gent. He spent three seasons in Belgium making 82 appearances and scoring five goals before being picked up by FC Twente. He’s now played 84 times for the Enschede club and is the first Venezualan player to score in the Champions League.

He likes to get forward and can combine pace, technique and physical strength whilst retaining the ability to defend all at the same time. This video, albeit a brief one, shows kind of what I mean.

For £3 million I don’t think you can go far wrong and it’s pretty much a risk free transfer. The transfer fee is fairly reasonable and his wage demands won’t be extortionate so I can see why the club are said to be taking a look at him.

On the other hand it just adds to the list of right-backs we’ve been linked with, and surely we’ll see one of them arrive at the club over the summer, regardless of what happens with Danny Simpson. The only two questions now are, which right-back will it be, and which one would you prefer from the ones we’ve been linked with?

Rosales, Clyne or Debuchy?

  1. Don’t know owt about Rosales, so I’d prefer Debuchy as he’s a bit more versatile, than Clyne but would like them both 😉

  2. ok RICHIE hope its good news mate.
well you know which way it will go with jabba, the cheapest way simples 😉

  3. They say Debuchy most likely off to Manure so in the event of that happening my first choice would be Clyne ,only cause I know ****** all about Rosales. £3M is cheap as chips for a decent Rb so maybe he’s a bargin and I read two German and Spanish clubs also interested in him .

  4. Seen him play quite a bit for Venezuela. He’s decent at defending and good going forward. He got 7 assists last season for FC Twente, the same amount as Luuk De Jong. Definitely an improvement on Simpson but better than Debuchy? I don’t know. Not seen him play.

  5. Seen him play once or twice for twente, I assumed it was Rosales the argie lad from ajax they were talking about because he spent so much time in the opposition half and played like a winger.

Looks a good player but id still be happy enough if wee danny got his head from up his **** and signed the new deal and saved us spending money on a right back that could be used in the positions we really need it IE Centre half, Left back and for me a classy midfield player to play alongside Tiote and Cabaye in a three like Gylfi Sigurdson…

  6. I think its a safe bet to say the club will sign a player to replace Simpson this summer. It’s one of the most obvious areas for improvement, along with RW and CB.

  7. I’m glad Ritchie isn’t drawing up our contracts.. we would have some crab of a player called Cyne on a four year deal 🙂 🙂

  8. Ice 🙂 he has big keys on the keyboard to compensate for his chorizo sized fingers.. 🙂 🙂

  9. Stuart I think it’s a little more sophisticated than that. I think they want Debuchey for no more than £5m but if that fails they will go to say 3.5 for clyne or say the same for Roseles. Whatever the figures are. But I think they go for their 1st target until they become too expensive or they lose out, then they move to number 2. I think that they explore everybody on the list though.

  10. Rosales has been a first team regular from the age of 18 and has five years league experience in the Belgian and Dutch leagues , has played in the champions league and is a regular starter for Venezuela.

    That’s good enough for me.

  11. Debuchy obviously has the proven class to help out immediately, so he is definitely our 1st choice. Depending on what we would end up getting for Clyne, Rosales SEEMS like a good option for us, especially at that price.

  12. Bearing in mind Pardew himself has mentioned on numerous occasions that we have defensive weaknesses, it makes me wonder why our first signing has been another midfielder?!
I’m sure he’s a good signing n all that, but we have been linked with Debuchy for donkeys now and yet now there is a chance we could now loose him to Man Utd. I know it’s all transfer speculation, but we need better quality defenders and Debuchy is certainly that so why hasn’t he been signed up yet?!

As the article says, if Simmo leaves, Rosales would be canny for £3m, but I would still like a naturally left footed left back in as well. As much as Santon improved at the end of the season, I still not think he’s going to be comfortable playing there all season.

  13. Cant say who is better Debuchey or Rosales never having seen Debuchey play . Rosales is definatly a better player than Simpson though both defending and getting forward . More pace and stronger in the tackle .

      (Quote)

  14. KIMTOON they won’t get him ,he already said he wants a team that will be playing for prizes and Europe . He a is supposed to have turned Aston Villa down and is in advanced talks with a german team .

  15. Sharpy..Maybe cos Amalfitano is out of contract soon, also the clubs of the players who are going to the Euros may want to wait until after that as they will get more money and more clubs after their players, as will the players themselves. Also there’s the small matter of the transfer window not being open yet 😉

  16. I heard Kruls in the XI for Holland, has the game been played? If so does anyone know how he did?

      (Quote)

  17. Axel ,Good don’t like the thought of such a talent going there to play under fat sam.

      (Quote)

  18. ANDYMAG its 1-0 for Holland at halftime , Krul apart from 1 free Kick that had him beat but hit the cross bar , has had nothing to do .Not even 1 shot too save of any note .

      (Quote)

  19. Ritchie – sorry for the delay, bathtime for boyo.

I guess I already know this answer so I suppose it’s more to confirm I understand it all. When Man Utd done the deal for Phil Jones last season and Arsenal have already done the deal for Podalski this summer – I take it that is because ALL parties were happy for that to happen.
It’s a bit of a headache all this like. I wish they would just change it back to how it was – scrap the transfer window and just buy when you want a player. This way just a **** on and gives players too much power IMO.

      (Quote)

  20. Sharpy…I was reading about pre contracts the other day, all it said was that they allowed all the paties to negotiate without interference from a 3rd club while transfer fee/personal terms etc were agreed, as far as I could tell they weren’t exactly binding but who knows, but I’m guessing with Amalfitano’s everythings agreed as with Podolski’s I guess. I suppose as long as all parties agree you can stick anything you want in a contract. “Real Contracts” don’t mean much so how much a pre contract is worth is anyones guess 😕

      (Quote)

  21. Richie – that was my understanding of it but then saw on SSN the other day that Eden Hazard was deciding which club to join having agreed personal terms with Chelsea, Man Utd and City which would mean the whole interference from a 3rd party thing doesn’t make sense … or, having just written all that – have I just released that Hazard is out of contract this summer? 😕 👿

      (Quote)

  22. So Holland lost 2-1 they gave a very sloppy goal away in injury time , be interesting to see if Krul plays in their next game next week .

  23. reet i dont know if this is BS or not.
but i heard the day that the reason pards was over in monaco(more likely for the GP) was to talk to someone who wants to invest in the club.

I have a feeling that if Hazard signs for Man U Debuchy will as well, as he’ll have a friend there not needing to constantly hang out with Krul. Saying that I don’t think Eden will choose man u.

      (Quote)

  25. Yeah Andy, that had crossed my mind as well. I know Debuchy is friends with Cabaye but reckon he’d follow Hazard to Utd. Where do you reckon Hazard will go then? – I fancied Utd to be honest coz he knows he could walk into their midfield and be an instant hit. City have a fairly strong midfield and Chelsea not having a manager would put him off.

      (Quote)

  26. Sharpy @28 it’s the agents who have too much power and say on contracts not the players imo. Just look at Ba at the moment ,he’s already said he’s letting his people sort out his contract. And Cisse said I was told to go to Newcastle airport as I was signing for Newcastle in an interview recently !. I’m sure with some players they just do what they are told .

Hitman@32 ,Well if we are looking for a rich investor Monaco is the place to go. 😉

      (Quote)

  27. Kim – youre probably right there like, the agents fees are a huge part of the football world now, the seem to negotiate the best deal for themselves

      (Quote)

  28. Sharpy -yeh i’m sure that’s a huge part of it. Look at some of the players that have left us looking for a better deal ,they may be richer ,but career wise how much better off are they .I bet their agents are well happy though ,feckin leeches ,rich for doing pretty much naff all . 👿

      (Quote)

  29. Sharpy (two and a half hours ago 😉 )
I reckon he will sign for city and after 3 months regretting it and going to Newcastle every couple of weeks to see yohan and Matheui 😎 . What will happen is he’ll think he’s made a good choice signing for the new big team, getting paid loads, but city won’t play him on the wing as they don’t play like that, he’ll then end up as a CM like Milner. 🙁

      (Quote)

  30. Hazard will end up being City’s Cronaldo. He’s more than just a winger.

  31. Where is everyone.. has Ritchie been on here trying to be humourous, only something like that could keep people offline 🙂

  32. Morning all. See Pards and a few of the backroom staff are guests of the Marussia F1 team in Monaco today for the GP, lucky ****** so he will be soaking up the atmosphere in the pits and eyeing up the sights so to speak, ahem. Apparently the CEO is a massive Newcastle fan so they will all have plenty to talk about. Martin Brundle may hunt the silver fox down for an interview pre race

  47. Morning lads, any new news then? Would love it if we Signed Debuchy but I can’t see that happening for 3m. Rosales would also be a great signing given his experience. I would hope we’re looking at a new left back too so Santon can move over to the right oh and a new CB of course. I think we’re pretty sound in midfield. Don’t agree with any of this rubbish about needing another winger but won’t complain if we can get Barnetta on the cheap

      (Quote)

  48. Foster’s certainly wouldn’t cover it, Elephant beer does a canny job though 😉

WhyCab… I think if it’s true Barnetta knocked us back with £40k a week, he’ll probably be looking for more than that now as there’s no fee involved any more….or the least he’ll want is a canny signing on fee imo.

      (Quote)

  49. Barnetta just seems like a better Larsson(mackem’s), would do well for a team like Villa.
