Gameiro unwanted at PSG

I see that all of the locals this morning are saying that we’ve been offered the chance to sign the talk of last summer, Kevin Gameiro.

The PSG forward opted to sign for the Parc des Princes outfit instead of joining us last summer, which in hindsight was probably a bad move for him but a good move for us as we ended up with Papiss Cisse instead.

Apparently he has fallen out with Carlo Ancelotti after failing to nail down a regular starting spot for PSG and has been told that he can find a new club after just one season in the French capital. Mind you, his goal record still isn’t bad despite not being a regular starter and he managed to finds the net 11 times in 30 appearances last term.

I have a saying, and that saying is never go back. I would suggest it should apply to this scenario also. He’s turned us down once so for him to join us now would almost be like we would be his second choice, his last chance if you like. What sort of message does that send out to the other players in the squad? You weren’t good enough then but now I’ve failed you are?

Fortunately I think we’ve moved on and are now looking at other targets to bolster our front line. I don’t think we’ll be investing huge amounts in our front line unless we lose a player, most likely to be Demba Ba which in turn means that it’s unlikely we’ll stump up the majority of the €11m PSG will want to recoup for the former Lorient man.

Another name we’ve been linked with over the last few days is that of Coventry City’s 18-year-old highly-rated midfield enforcer Gael Bigirimana, with Sky Sports even suggesting that he’ll be signing for us over the summer.

Described as an “Essien style” players, Bigirimana has impressed at The Ricoh Arena despite the recent relegation of the Sky Blues. If signed by us he would most definitely be one for the future rather than one for the now.

So what do you make of it all? Would be willing to take Gameiro, again?

Yes, especially if Demba Ba’s contract talks fail I would offer a swap deal?

Agree with you Toonsy on Gameiro, couldn’t see the club going back in for him after he turned us down.

On Bigirimana. YES YES YES! He’s a quality young player, seen him play for Coventry about 15 times last season and has all the attributes needed for a holding-midfielder, albeit a rough diamond at the minute.

The Coventry Telegraph were reporting we had bid between 500k and £1 million for him and Andy Thorn, Coventry’s manager was worried about losing him as the board will want to cash in on him.

This time last year I really wanted us to sign this guy but, a bit like the Turkish kid at PSG, it seemed something of a risk. We got Ba (and he still remains a risk) and then the real deal in Cisse. I think it’s a young up and coming striker we need who’s willing to wait and learn. The EL and ACON will see chances to start.

    georgio says:

The Journal’s claiming we won’t get M’biwa either as he’s off to Jarmany. Could just be his agent agitating, who knows, but he did seem like a good possibility.

    Johno Toon says:

Would agree not to sign Gamerio as I think he will cost too much and Im sure we have other targets in mind.

dont know much about Bigirimana but from what I have read he is highly rated and for the rumored price it would be a good move in my opinion.

    Rodzilla says:

    Fuck him.

He’s already turned us down once, and spat his dummy out at having to sit on the bench with PSG. Sounds like another sulker to me.

All our current players have the right attitude, they want to play for us and will accept the fact they won’t always get a game. Don’t want any prima donnas, thanks, we’ve had plenty of them before and they’re not worth the hassle.

  7. 7
    Rodzilla says:

….Michael Owen being the obvious exception, who was more than happy to sit on the bench for a princely sum.

  8. 8
    georgio says:

Rod – the problem with England’s Michael Owen wasn’t sitting on the bench, it was when he was on the bloody field. What a total waste of space – the guy was finished when he was 23!

What I’d like is a young hungry Suarez/Tevez type and not a Jordan Rhodes/Grant Holt. In fact I haven’t seen a good young English player in any position.

  9. 9
    Rodzilla says:

Georgio, haha, yeah you’re right there. He never seemed that arsed when he played for ‘Michael Owen United’, I guess our team was just too crap for him.

I’m with you on the firey, pacey little handful of a player to add to our forward line. I would have taken Defoe a couple of years ago, he deserves more than the bench at Spurs, but I think he’s another one of these ‘troublesome’ types anyway. I watched the play off final the other day between Blades and Udders Feeled, and Rhodes did absolutely nothing for me to think he could cut it with us. He’s probably just another Jermaine Beckford.

I’d like another South American player, they’re hard as nails.

…a decent one though. No Fumacas/Cordones/Bassedas(es) or ‘Nacho’s though

He had his chance no thanks

  11. 11
    M says:

    Price. All about the price

if PSG want to recoup the same fee they paid out to Lorient – no chance. If he’s available at half the price, why not?

  12. 12
    Rodzilla says:

If he was available for half the price though M, that would suggest he’s a proper pain in the arse and they’re desperate to get rid. Bit of a double edged sword you’re wielding there. Although Ben Arfa is a prime example of a ‘tamed’ player. Maybe we could do something with Gameiro, but the alarm bells are ringing for me.

  13. 13
    Andymag says:

    Georgio
Think it’s more we’re being priced out of a move for him. Reckon we should turn our attention to Toby Alderwield.

  14. 14
    georgio says:

Rod – I’d also go for a South American, Argie or Uruguay. They are indeed hard as nails. Who was that guy a few years back on loan to Brum/WBA? Can’t quite remember his name, went off to Italia? I’d take him.

  15. 15
    georgio says:

Andy – did you mean M’biwa? There’s so many rumours flying around and we all know nowt’s happening until July anyway.

Mauro Zarate! Tricky, skillful and very persistent. And very expensive Argy.
    Remember him Rod?

  16. 16
    toonsy says:

I don;t buy this Mbiwa talk. I think it’s far from decided where he will go, especially now he has failed to make the France squad.

I mean he did say not so long back he wants to move to England ahead of any other league. It’s just his agent doing what agents do IMO.

  17. 17
    georgio says:

Hey Toonsy! How’s it going with the little fella? I also agree with you re agents. What a strange job that must be. Bit like working for MI6 but more money. Mbiwa would be my first choice.

  18. 18
    georgio says:

Toonsy – is there a setting or something on the site that allows comments to appear as they happen – constant updates rather than having to reload all the time?

  19. 19
    Rodzilla says:

Zarate, yeah Georgio I remember the name. Can’t remember him doing enough to warrant me transferring him into my Fantasy League team at the time though. …probably because he played for a McLeish team that never seemed bothered about attacking.

  20. 20
    Rodzilla says:

Georgio, there’s probably an auto-refresh option available, but I think that’d be more of an annoyance than a help, as the page would refresh while your halfway through reading something.

  21. 21
    richietoon says:

Don’t know much about him other than his stats, if Pards and the scouts wanted him and he was the the right price, then fair enough for me.
As for us not being his first choice, so what? best get rid of most of our team because Newcastle would be “first choice”for next to none of them. If I remember his “preferred” options were PSG or Valencia, both offering European football and with PSG a probable shot at the title and near to his place of birth or an English side tipped by many to struggle and possible relegation, who would you have picked?…..that said I don’t think we’re interested.

Reference Mbiwa, the journal article is pretty much bollox, starting with the “missed out” headline, if we don’t put in an offer then we haven’t really missed out, his agent also says there’s been interest from German clubs, doesn’t say owt about anyone putting in an offer. Early doors yet, time will tell.

  22. 22
    toonsy says:

Gergio – I could get a plugin for auto-refreshing, but it would use so much resources in terms of numerous and repeated calls to the server all day long which would slow everything down numerous times….

Plus it would annoy the hell out of me getting down so far only for the page to refresh and have to find where I was.

best bet is to just press F5 whenever you’re ready to refresh and stop being so lazy ;)

    richietoon says:

Toonsy….bit cheeky claiming the “never go back” saying as your own like ;-)
    You overseas again?

  25. 25
    Rodzilla says:

Richie, my argument was more along the lines of him getting his ‘preferred choice’ after turning us down, and still not being happy. He doesn’t strike me as a player happy to sit on the bench, and I think there’ll be a lot of that next season. Of course I’m just putting 2 and 2 together (and probably getting 5).

  26. 26
    kimtoon says:

Toonsy ,I’m with you in that I wouldn’t go back in for him ,I would like to think we can pick and choose a little more with our improved Euro status . With regard to Gael Brigirimana ,I havn’t seen him play that much to pass comment ,other than to say he’s most likely one for the future I suppose. We seem to be linked with lots of Forwards and midfielders what about the Defenders we need ,other than Rosales it’s a bit quiet on that front. I’m with Andy with regards Toby Alderwiered ,think he could be a good choice for us.

  27. 27
    richietoon says:

True Rodz but as a capped player with a major international tournament coming up, you can’t really expect him to be happy on the bench…Only young players or players coming to the end of their careers would probably be happy(probably not the right word) to bench warm, plus if he honestly believes he’s better than those ahead of him, he’d be pissed of regardless of international recognition.

  28. 28

Yeah Richie, I see your point. He just doesn’t sit well with my gut.

We need a good third striker to compete with, and complement, Ba and Cisse.

My first choice would be Bas Dost as he would give us something different up front and improve our goal tally from set pieces.

However, should Ba decide to move on this Summer then Gameiro has to be in the frame, even at the £10m PSG will demand. And I’d still take Dost as well.

    AndrewT says:

Gameiro seems to be too much like Cisse in that he’s primarily just a deadly finisher. We have that in Cisse and Ba really. If Ba left, maybe I would be good with him, but I think with that happening I would rather see us bring in somebody who will be deadly on that left wing.

Granted, Marveaux could still prove to be amazing out there. I just think we need to get an attacker that offers more than just clinical finishing

  48. 48

I completely agreed with Richie on this one. I really don’t see what the kid done wrong?
Let’s face it, we were a mid table club selling all of their ‘best’ players last summer against PSG – a club where he could have very well won a league winners medal … No brainer for me like!
He never said he didn’t want to join us or our offer was not enough – as Barnetta did, he just picked a club where he could win things.
But now, he’s not getting a game there and all their talk is getting a new striker in.
As said, Pardew knows the type of players he wants in his squad and if Pardew still wants this lad, and we can get him at the right price he’d be a great addition to the squad … Particularly during the ACoNs.

Richie – To be honest I asked the question the other day about Barnetta (should we take him having knocked us back?) and the more I think about it the more I think – if we can get him on a free then yes we should.
As you said earlier, I cant imagine we would have been many peoples first choice over the last few seasons, what with league positions, managers coming and going and the ‘changes’ the board have made within the club.
However now I see us as being a really attractive club to players.
Im not sure if they will come or not but Barnetta and Gameiro would certainly improve our squad and give us great options if we decided to set up as 4-4-2 for certain games.

It’s getting a but silly how many players we are being linked with now though.

  79. 79
    Sharpy17 says:

Ice – I understand what you and Dave are saying but the thing is, if Cisse has a loss of form of gets injured the we are struggling. Ba lost form at the back end of last season and if it was for Cisse being so prolific we wouldn’t have done half as well. We need at least 1 striker if we loose Lovern and possibly Best and Ranger as well and this kid can score.
That said, I don’t see us spending €10m plus for him like.

  80. 80

Ice – I got the impression that Martinez knew that he was leaving for free this summer and opted to play Di Santo coz he was their longer term strike option.
If we lost Lovern and Ranger and/or Best, I personally see him as a good buy on a free but with wages of around £15k a week with bonuses. I think your right in the sense that he hasn’t proven he’d be worth more than that in recent seasons.

  …what a record he had! 655 goals in 709 games!

I was saying earlier how I’d like a short, pacy, tricky little fker to compliment our big lads. this quote on Müller made me laugh:

“Müller was short, squat, awkward-looking and not notably fast; he never fit the conventional idea of a great footballer, but he had lethal acceleration over short distances, a remarkable aerial game, and uncanny goalscoring instincts. His short legs gave him a strangely low center of gravity, so he could turn quickly and with perfect balance in spaces and at speeds that would cause other players to fall over.”

    Gameiro no thanks sorry
This time last year we were all excited about gervinho dodged a bullet there and bought class in cisse.

So much rubbish in media and I’m sorry but this had to be up there lazy regurgitated journalism

    Rodzilla says:

Prem, I think he may be slightly out of our price range though, unfortunately. …just been checking out Spain’s squad for the Euros. They’re still the dog’s proverbials like. They could field a starting 11 consisting purely of Real and Barca players.

Andy, I’d be happy if he got anywhere near the “short fat one”‘s record, obviously scoring most of them for us.

  104. 104
    Rodzilla says:

…mind you Prem, his buy out clause is just a snip at 120 million quid  …the world’s gone mad.

MM, I got halfway down comment 21 and my brain started hurting. :|

Kim, to be fair, Richie was particularly cunning in his suggestive wording. You just misinterpreted, and fluttered into his web of deceit. The power of suggestion eh.

    Stevep says:

Yeah – think I’m in the camp where he thought he went to the best possible club, I’d be surprised if we paid the fee they would require or his wages to be honest
Papers know jack do are just linking us with any old targets and pretty much anyone else who sorts fits our transfer profile

    Rodzilla says:

SteveP, regarding Gameiro, we were after a striker and he was on our hit list of top targets along with Cisse. He fkd us off, we got Cisse. Job done.

As far as I’m concerned, Gameiro missed the ferry.

In all honesty I can’t see us going back in for him. It just doesn’t tend to happen in the world of football. I want a “short, squat and awkward-looking striker who causes other players to fall over” now anyway.

  111. 111
    Rodzilla says:

…not wanting to be too obvious, and I’m only saying it cos ‘Aussie Magpie Fan’ is currently counting sheep in bed (literally), but I think Richie could fit that profile.

    Andymag says:

I see the daily fail are saying Kruls got a 3/5 chance of going to Spurs  they fail to remember that ‘why the F-CK would he want to go there?’ there in Europa like us and are much more likely to see an exodus of their top players than us, also they have Friedel who is a brilliant Keeper and has a few seasons left in him.

  113. 113
    Rodzilla says:

    3/5 is shit value

Rodz me old mucka – there’s no future tense in that post. Spurs transfer priorities are a striker and a keeper – don’t u think?

  144. 144
    Aussie Magpie Fan says:

it is almost comical as to how much bullsh*t is being sprayed about by the press… I don’t know how the can look at themselves in the mirror each day.. If they were sued for every slanderous story or for every lie, none of these tabloid papers would have a penny to piss on..

  145. 145
    Shamrock says:

On Gameiro, i’d take him. Very good player. His choicE last summer was an ambitious PSG or a Newcastle side not in Europe who the press were tipping for relegation. No brainer really. Now he see’s we are on the rise, can fit his ambition and he can become part of a hard working, talented squad things are different. I’d certainly hold no grudge if he moved here….

  146. 146
    CC says:

The press shit about Krul is pissing me off, 3/5 chance of Krul ending up at spurs why exactly ?? A club that have as strict a wage cap as us and are in the same european competition. The daily fail strikes again…

The cisse stuff isnt even worth commenting on and the ba stuff is boring the tits off me just sign up or fuck off and fail your medical then come back with your tail between your legs after your gammy knee fucks it all up…

  147. 147
    richietoon says:

Aussie…It’s disgraceful really, I said quite a while back that Journalism is a dying trade. All most of them seem to do is either regurgitate old news, most of which was made up in the first place or surf the web and write rumours out as an article. There’s feck all investigating or researching done anymore, we all tek the piss out of Cwarr(rightly so) but I bet his success percentage of 1% still compares favourably with the journos.

  148. 148
    Aussie Magpie Fan says:

Apparently the french press are saying we are in for Sessegnon. They are saying that the Sunderland attacking player has a release clause of 8m and we are looking to sign him up. His agent was saying that Stephane would love to link up with all the other french players currently with Newcastle.
It would be a gutsy move from the young french man, given the history of the two clubs though..

I hope this is true.. really good little player..

Rich – Aye it is. To top it all off internet access is at a premium in this hotel. Currently STOOD on the bed holding the laptop trying to maintain wireless signal

  150. 150
    richietoon says:

Aussie…I’d love it if we signed him, he’s a good player but the added bonus of pissing them off would be great……doubt it’ll happen but watch how they’d suddenly reckon he was crap

  151. 151
    richietoon says:

Toonsy…I thought it would have been a canny signal in a 5 star hotel ;-)

Rich – 5 star my arse. This is a work hotel. You can rent rooms by the hour. Seriously

    Classy http://www.le-mirador.fr/hotel.html

  153. 153
    JJ says:

Ye said all along I’d love Sessengon, he would offer something very different and it would be hilarious to have Cisse and him, imagine how that would piss off the scum.

Can see MON letting him go though.

    @147
I honestly think the worst of the journalists lately is Mark Douglas. He writes two page no news articles about absolutely nothing and pure speculation about what has been spoken about in social media.

All he ever says is what is unlikely to happen and its obvious most things are unlikely to happen, therefore some see him as being the most reliable.

He still links the same players just covers his arse every time in his wording so that basically he can never be wrong. He can also never be right.

But Richie, I wouldn’t label all journalists under that label. Its only really the UK and States that are as unreliable.

Having said that, I won’t be a journalist next month so feck them, they’re all shit.

  154. 154
    richietoon says:

Toonsy… still looks owa posh for riff raff like you, a Formule 1 is more your standard I reckon

JJ…Spot on about Douglas. You changing careers then?

  155. 155
    JJ says:

    Have to Richie,

Need to earn more to pay for the little one. So now I’m actually going to work what I qualified as. A graphic design/marketing.

So far I’m been a game ranger, journalist, and now designer. I’m hoping I finish up as a wildlife photographer.

Richie, I stayed in three formula one hotels when I travelled around South Africa after Uni. Beat camping… Only thing that really sucked was the bog in the shower… hahaha.

  156. 156
    toonsy says:

Rich – I stayed in a “Premeire Classe” one just outside Paris not so long back. All I can say is :???: :???:

  157. 157
    JJ says:

Just out of interest sake, what is the average price for a decent hotel in the UK per person per night?

  158. 158
    icedog says:

JJ batty does good rates on rooms as long as you dont mind shareing with about ten others and help with the cleaning :)
check the net mate theres quite a few good deals as long as you stay away from london area with games comeing up it would cost you a arm and leg “if”you can get owt

  159. 159
    Shamrock says:

Any Premier Inn is usually very affordable, clean and kitted out with what you need JJ… Lenny Henry really rates them apparently.

  160. 160
    richietoon says:

Toonsy….the name of the hotel isn’t exactly on a par with the room then?

JJ…..aye the bathrooms are like a portaloo….good luck with the new job then.
Premier inns ya can often get for £29, but generally I’d bank on about £40-50 and upwards.
