Mulumbu admits to Toon talks

A genuine transfer target?
Newcastle have been in talks with West Brom midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu according to the player who is now open to a move away from The Hawthorns.

The 25-year-old former Paris St Germain midfielder had an impressive season for West Brom and was bettered in terms of tackles and interception by only Scott Parker and our very own Yohan Cabaye last term.

Mulumbu represents the Democratic Republic of Congo and has made 12 appearances at international level which supplement the 116 appearances he mas made for West Brom since joining them in 2009. If we do end up signing him it will increase speculation linking Cheik Tiote with a move away as he is about as close as a like for like replacement as you are going to get.

“We have already started talking to teams like Newcastle and Tottenham. For now, I’m leaving it all in the hands of my agent and I hope to have good surprises on my return from vacation,” Mulumbu told Mercato365.

With teams like Newcastle and Tottenham being interested, along with other notable names (according to the press) such as Arsenal and Chelsea there appears to be some competition for the signature of the midfielder who now admits that he is looking for a fresh challenge after a spell in the Black Country.

“Last year, I thought it would be a little premature to go because it was my first full season. But I confirmed my promise this season. I continued to show all my abilities and I think I now have to look for another challenge,” he said.

He added: “That’s why I hope to join a club in another class. I had a good year, I’m pretty confident and I will leave it now to my agent. I’m going to go on holiday and come back stronger because I know that another big season ahead.”

So there you go, right from the mouth of the player himself and not from an agent. I don’t know if we’re in for him but I do know he is a cracking little player who would fit straight into our team. In fact I believe he is slightly better than Cheik Tiote if truth be told as he scores more, tackles more, intercepts more, passes more and picks up less bookings all for a team who are apparently worse than us. That’s just my opinion though…

What do you think? Would Mulumbu be a good signing, assuming we’re even in for him?

  1. Don’t know if you’re going off Opta stats – Mulumbu may be a busier player than Tiote but he doesn’t catch the eye with his midfield dominance like Cheick.

Whenever we look like we might lose a player people start writing them down! Swapping Tiote for Mulumbu would be a step backward IMHO.

  2. Toonsy, seems to be just what we need, of course any time you get into a
choice between ourselves and a London side, it’s weighted to-wards London.
Mulumbu would be our second DR Congo signing, following Martins.
But at this time he’s exactly what we need, being weak in the second or midfield three in a 4-3-3, hopefully we can sign him.
Problem is with an over abundance of African players, it becomes a problem, during the period the African nations tournament takes place, with a lot of missing players.

  3. Chuck – Wasn’t Martins Nigerian?

Mind you I was thinking the same about international African players, but then he’s 25 and has only 12 caps which suggests to me he isn’t first choice by any stretch.

  4. Aidan – Not really writing Tiote down, I just don’t think he is as good as some people make him out to be. In at least 75% I’d say we lose him as he gets a silly booking early on and knows another one and that’ll be that so pulls back a little. Why are his defensive displays so “dazzling” as you say? Is it because he hammers into tackles? Because being a defensive midfielder can be done without sliding on your **** for 30 yards….

Still, like I say, just my opinion 🙂

  5. I can see your point about Mulumbu rivalling Tiote and maybe even being better.

We could do a lot worse than him if Tiote does leave for big money (still really hope he doesn;t go though). At least he’s got priceless Prem experience as well as talent.

I think Tiote will get even better next season as he becomes more and more adjusted to the Prem.

  6. Pretty decent to be fair. Pardew rated him because he said after the WBA game they were looking at getting down the sides because Mulumbu protected the middle so well.

Nout wrong with partnering him with Tiote in a 4-2-3-1 allowing Cabaye to push in. Would really give a solid base.

  7. He wouldn’t be a bad player to add some depth to the squad to suppliment Tiote (ACoN, Guthrie and Smith going, only inexperienced CM players left). But the thing is, would he be happy with being a squad player? If he goes to Spurs or Newcastle I can’t see him being more than a squad player. He would take over the Guthrie role, unless Tiote is sold.

  8. I don’t think Mulumbu is as all out defensive as Tiote, they are two different players tbh he is more like a CMF and scores goals, moves forward ect.

  9. Toonsy, West Brom fan here – personally I wouldn’t want to see him go but if he does sign for you, he is very unlikely to go to the African Cup of Nations (so he wont be missing for a month or so) as he has pretty much stated he will not play for the Democratic Republic of Congo – not because he’s not first choice for his nation – just because of the state of the country and also the standard of the national team. I hope we can sort our manager out soon before all our big players leave with rumors of Odemwingie and Jonas Olsson making noises they want to leave as well as Mulumbu.

  10. Tiote has a presence about him which seems to lift the fans and the team when he plays and statistics don’t always tell the whole story. Having said that if we get a crazy offer for Tiote then he will be sold that is for sure. The pleasing thing about newcastle now is that they seem prepared for every possible outcome and you can be sure if any key player is sold then a replacement will have been lined up. My glass is half full and Mulumba if he signs would add extra strength in depth that will be needed for a Europa and Premiership campaign.

  11. Chuck – you’re thinking of Lualua.

Dave Watson – fair play to you mate, hope yous get sorted soon too, Hughton would be a cracking manager for yous in my opinion but it looks to be that German lad.

I really can’t believe just how many midfielders we are linked with, when what we are desperate for is defenders and strikers!!!
As for this lad, I think he is one of those players who has a big impact on games without necessarily standing out. He would give Cabaye and Benny more freedom, but if he comes, I do believe the writing is on the wall for Tiote.

  12. West brom fan here, mulumbu is a top class player and i have not doubt in my mind he would be a quality player for newcastle.Id be sad to see him leave but when certain clubs come calling what can you do. Mulumbu runs our midfield he is a ball winner and has improved his distribution since being at albion.he is an all action full of energy midfielder!he dosent score many goals but contributes alot to the team. He wasnt as good last season as the season before but still ran our midfield. Like i said he Is a quality player and would do great for newcastle. But don expect him on the cheap our chairman is known for getting millions for players!

      (Quote)

  13. He is a good player and would be a good addition to our team, but I think because he has stated our interest it will be now over if it was there in the 1st place

      (Quote)

  14. Mulumu is a good player, can play as defensive or offensive midfield. But so can Diame who’s now a free agent from Wigan. Infact I’d like to see a few Premier free agents arrive at the Toon… Kalou, good goal scoring record from the wings, plus can play up front (Loven’s is gone and we should dump Orbaten)…Bosingwa (as Simpson’s stalling on a contract and he flatters to decive, got a knack of turning up now and again to prevent the odd goal but offers little else). Then all we need is a CB.

      (Quote)

  15. I actually think it makes sense going for Kalou. 1) He is a free agent, 2) He is at our level, I think he would be fantastic for us in Europa and prem easily. At Chelski they were growing tired of him and Malouda ‘Kalouda’. 🙂 . But we have to admit we are a step down and I think he is more than good enough to play in Europa. 3) He is a compatriot of Tiote and could help us to pursude him to stay. 4) He offers something different to what we have already and has experience but isn’t old. 5) We now have the money to offer him decent wages and I don’t think any of the big guns are after him.

      (Quote)

  16. My only concern with Kalou is that he may think he is better than he actually is and want that big wage with being a free agent. If he was ready to give up the champagne lifestyle of the big city and role his sleeves up and graft with the rest of our boys, then yes I’d take him in a heartbeat – but I’m not sure he is prepared to do that.

      (Quote)

  17. if you had to pay for a player like Kalou you’d be looking at 8m. He’s 26, bags of experience, plays on either wing or upfront and has a good goal scoring record (at chelsea a goal every 3 games, before that a goal every game)
Diame is a good midfielder. he’s still young, pace-power-plus a bit skill. No wonder Liverpool and Arsenal have been linked to him. He’s free and his wages shouldn’t be stupid.
As for Bosingwa, yes there’s better out there like Mathieu Debuchy. but he’s 29, experience, good going forward and Free

      (Quote)

  18. Good evening lads its been a while .. Regarding Mulumbu hes a great player but I wouldnt consider him better than Tiote. But if were going to get a playet in his mold id rather Diame. Free Agent and low wages and chips in offensively with the odd screamer as well as defensively with awesome tackling. He did great for a supposedly weaker team in Wigan so why not us as a squad player? Personally I love Diame and hes pacy too.

      (Quote)

  19. Id also take Kalou but only if he lowers his wages. Anyone think Diego is worth a punt? Top-class midfielder and Wolfsburg dont want him and Atletico cant pay for him due to debt. I know our midfield is crowdes but cmon at least as a toy

      (Quote)

  20. Expat – if they were THAT good would there current clubs be allowing them to leave on free transfer?. OK with Diame I don’t suppose Wigan could do much to keep him but they could have sold him last summer and made some money – same with Chelsea. I don’t mind picking up one or two free agents but that should not become our recruitment policy IMO

      (Quote)

  21. i’m a west brom fan and i know he only signed a new 4 contract with us a years and a half ago so i don’t think this story is true at all 🙂

  22. sharpy with Chelsea playing similar to Toon as late (striker falling back onto wing) Torres, Mata, Malouda are stiff compitions..plus Chelsea will go all out this season to buy a host of new young players. To much rotation if he wants to play regular.
Hell sign him and you can dump Orbetan, Best and Marveux (i know we ain’t seen much of him but with his injury record we won’t either).

Diame would be a good addition. Could second either Tiote or Cabaye role

      (Quote)

  23. it seems policy now to pick up 2 or 3 free and buy 1 or 2.it’s started already with Amalifitano being a free

      (Quote)

  24. All is lost man u plan to buy modric, baines and tiote for a combined fee off 72m 🙄 . All three clubs are very shrewd when selling, it’ll cost man u a lot more than 72m. Chelsea had 40m rejected for modric in January(August?), Baines is Everton’s best player so they won’t sell cheap and Man U could be our rivals next season as well as the fact that we’re on such a stable basis financially that we can hold out for up to 30m if we wanted to.

      (Quote)

  25. Because we’ve had such a good season all our recent signings will be transfer targets. In the next few weeks I can see Arsenal, Liverpool and Man U being linked to Tiote, Cabaye and even Arfa, anyone of these players can walk into these sides. We’ve all heard Ba is a target with his release clause and there’s sure to be more speculation about Cisse.

  26. DJG, really good points on bringing in Kalou! I’ve been thinking pretty much the same thing. He’d be perfect for the left wing role, and could possibly end his career with us if he has the proper motivation

  35. Mulumbu Will cost….5m? he was link with the toon last season when he was undecided about signing a new contract he would have been a free agent then I think. He’s decent on his day i’ll say that.
Surprised if they let him go because WBA have released a few players this summer including midfeilders Tchoyi and Scharner i think.
