Newcastle look at Kalou as free transfer scramble hots up

Tooning in for Kalou?
Newcastle are said to be interested in signing Chelsea attacker Saloman Kalou if reports in the Daily Mail are to be believed.

The 26-year-old is being released by Chelsea after six years at the club that have been littered with trophies and winners medals, with the latest one being a Champions League winning medal.

Kalou has made 244 appearances for the Stamford Bridge outfit, scoring 60 goals and creating another 40, although it has to be said that he has found himself used in a rotation role over the last few years. Generally though he has been a good player for Chelsea which is why I’m surprised that he is being let go.

An international colleague of Cheik Tiote, Kalou has made 48 appearances for Ivory Coast scoring 17 goals along the way. He can create goals and score goals although I have reservations about signing another player who will be off to the African Cup of Nations every other year.

Anyway, I have no idea why I wrote all of that as the report was in the Daily Mail so you can bet your last penny that nothing will come of it. Actually, I do know why I wrote it after all. Basically I just wanted to highlight the quality that is being released by clubs this year.

Kalou is just one of them, but there are others. Hoilett, Diame, Rodallega and more according to this list here so there is real scope to grab some cracking players for very little outlay in transfer fees, something which Newcastle have already done with the singing of Romain Amalfitano of course.

The only stumbling block with any high-profile free transfers will be wage demands. Not requiring a fee is one thing, but agents will know this and will want to exploit that by trying to get their client (and themselves) the best possible deal.

Are we in for Kalou? I very much doubt it due to the aforementioned wages and knowledge that he wouldn’t exactly be on a meagre wage at Chelsea, but it doesn’t mean that there are no players worth looking at on the free transfer list.

I’m sure Graham Carr has a handle on it all anyway…

Aussie…why play week in week out, when you could be picking up 90K big spondoolicks a week, have unlimited bovril, and you’re own monacled bench-warmer blanket like Michael Owen…

I agree with Aussie, I’d rather be playing. Regardless of where he goes hell have more money than he could ever spend anyway….so you may as well have a bit less in the bank that’ll never see the light of day anyway but play the game you love playing imo.

  9. Ice, Owens heart was gone a long time ago mate.. you could see the hunger was gone… a young fella like Johnson should be tearing down doors to get game time.. Rich is right, how much money can you earn that you would struggle to spend.. you are only young and good enough to play at the top level for a short time..

  10. Ice..there’s loads of the feckers that’s for sure, but for me there’s more important things in life than money and before anyone asks, I’ve changed jobs 3 times for less money to improve the quality of my life, money is important but it ain’t everything.

  11. Agree with Rich 100%.. I could be earning huge coin welding up in northern Western Australia but I have chosen lifestyle over the coin… money is nice but not everything..

  14. Afternoon lads ,Christ what a carry on with this weather down here in the west country. Just got back from hospital appointment with the lad ,chaos on the roads ,trees down left right and centre and an inside out brolly flew in me face 😯 👿 .Hour and a half late getting called in only to find out that the BBC are filming the Doctor that was due to see the lad .So they ask me if we were happy to be filmed 😯 .After waiting an hour and a half and looking like we’d been pulled through a hedge backwards and the lad unable to communicate his wishes on the matter ,I decided that as much as Andy Warhol said we’d all get 15 mins of fame ,I would buck the trend . 😉 After all that we was in and out in 15 mins and we got a filthy look from said camera crew as we walked passed 😆 To be fair Lew would probably of been one of the more interesting consultations the Doc had that day. 😉

Anyway ,Kalou, can’t see him at Toon due to the wages tbh. 🙁

Aussie@65 -Agree re Al Habisi ,great goalie. 😎

Munich@66 I posed that very question the other day ,It’s all very well sitting on the bench picking up loadsa money ,but wheres the job satisfaction and hope of progressing your international career. 🙄

MM…No, I’m setting my sites further up the coast, though I may buy the team if they make it thru the play offs……which is looking doubtful as I went to the f 1st leg game and it was pretty dire. 😕

  31. MDS & ICE, is this the guy Liamsoutherntoon was on about do you reckon , he did say it was someone we’d not been linked with . 😕

  32. That’s the first I’ve seen anyone claim that we were in on him. I only heard that we had scouted him before. He certainly fits the mold age and talent wise, but doubt we’d sign him unless Cheik left.

      (Quote)

  33. mds yes he did. He did say it would be a jaw dropper though which makes me doubt its this guy.

  34. Afternoon everyone.

Firstly, regarding Kalou, he is a quality player and as Sidekick rightly pointed out, there are ways around fitting his wage demand into our wage cap. He would improve our squad, but I’m not sure he would get into the first team unless Ba left. My main issue with signing him would be that it would be another absentee for the cup of nations. I think any CFs that come in have to be good enough to cover Cisse and Ba for injuries, allow them to rest or absences.

Kalou is good but I would prefer Hoillett who would be available for the full season (barring injury of course). I would also consider the Russia lad from Fulham or Rodallega and then also a young CF late teens early 20’s who we can develop as I think that whilst Campbell and Hooper are good prospects and should be brought on by loaning them out this season, they are not ready for first team PL football yet.

  35. Lewandowski is well mint, feel that even though Poland have been dominant (better football than England) Greece have been really hard-done-by.

  40. Yaya Sanogo , 19 years old and a French under 21 striker available on a free transfer.
Appeared to be a great prospect until he broke his leg and missed the 2010/11 season. Hasn’t made much of this last season, probably due to a lack of confidence. However, with Ben Arfa as a mentor, the lad might get his confidence back at NUFC and we could end up with a really good striker.

Do you think we should give Yaya a 2 year contract to see if he develops or do you think Yaya’s a no go ?

    I’ll get me coat!

  41. Toonsy – I’m disappointed in your response to Mr Cheese. All posts should be welcomed and feedback encouraged. It should then be pointed out to Mr Cheese the you have more important things going on in life to throw out 5-6 articles a day, however guest blogists are very welcome and if he would like to comply an article then you would happily put it out there for him. If not, shut ya pie hole!!!!
As the regular posters on this blog are more than happy with the way things are done 😉

      (Quote)

  42. Sidekick – that’s exactly the kind of player I meant in my earlier post. Have an older CF who would be ready for first team football now, and a younger player like Yaya who could be eased in gradually.
The other thing to remember is that Ba started slow last season as he was still taking part in Ramadan, which of course Cisse will as well so both will be weaker than normal and may struggle to play the full 90 mins.

  43. Kim – and I’m sure every bloke on here appreciates that sentiment as much as Toonsy will 😉 😛

  45. Kalou. . Not in the mould of the new recruits.

    Can’t see it like.

Plus, to step down from Chelsea to ourselves can’t be in his interests. No thanks.

  46. To be fair to Mr Nob cheese, he should be allowed to speak his opinion without being abused. He was just stating a point and should be listened to.

    I hate defensive attitudes.
