Toon bid £8m for Luuk de Jong

Doing a deal for de Jong?
Newcastle have made a bid of £8m (just shy of €10m) for FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong if reports in the local and national press are to be believed.

The 21-year-old Netherlands international has long been linked with Newcastle United and it would now appear, after his country’s elimination from EURO 2012, that the club have decided to test the water with a bid.

FC Twente are said to be looking for closer to £12m although once again we get back to the whole cash is king argument. Will Steve McClaren be tempted by thought of having a slightly lower fee up front so he can reinvest it in his team? Or would he prefer to wait for some of the cash like most other deals are structured?

Of course the news that we are actively pursuing a striker will fan the flames of the Demba Ba rumours once more and may even point towards to the fact that something has happened behind the scenes and that Ba has perhaps given an indication that he may indeed be off after all.

That is pure speculation on my part of course, but to me it seems strange that our club would be willing to spend what is a relatively large amount on a striker, which to me would suggest de Jong is eyed as being a starter. Yes I know we have more games next season with Europe and everything, but I still didn’t expect us to be willing to spend that amount on a striker.

For his part de Jong is a cracking not-so-little player with an impressive record in the Eredivisie and has racked up 59 goals in 119 appearances. Although his real breakthrough only came two seasons ago, it’s worth pointing out that since then he has scored 52 goals in 99 appearances.

The 21-year-old is tall (he stands at 6ft 2in), physical and can find the back of the net. He can improve and has years ahead of him in his career. An unused substitute for The Netherlands in all three EURO 2012 group games, de Jong has already represented his country seven times. Maybe they should have given him a go rather than sit him on the bench?

All in all, good stuff. Time will tell whether our bid is successful or not, but you never know, it might be. Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren get on – the former Middlesbrough manager was a guest of Pardew’s at the training ground not so long back remember – so perhaps the wally with the brolly may fancy doing us a favour?

We wont be the only club interested in de Jong though, which could be a problem, but then again I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how it all pans out.

  1. Trouble is that if Debuchy does well against Spain, World and European champions, then his value will increase even more, Lille could be asking for £12-15m 😯 😕

  2. I don’t see Debuchy doing well against Spain. In fact, Debuchy reminds me very much of Santon. Good going forward, but has a lot to learn positionally.

Spain’s movement will leave him all over the shop

I doubt The Daily Mail has a clue about how negotiations are going, but I do think £9.5million is the right price and no more.

  4. The £15m asking price was being touted by sky and the press seem to have taken it as gospel, I saw €15 from the dutch press who i would put more faith in which is about £12m, £8m is a fair opening offer and £9.5m up front if its true (which being the mail it wont be) seems a fair enough price for a player of his age and talent but only has a year left on his contract…

  5. Has it not occurred to anyone that the reason the papers are privvy to all this info about the “Hatem Slayer” deal is because of who his manager happens to be? 🙄

  28. I reckon Jose will still be at Liverpool next season.. I don’t really think the fit is right for him but Rodgers may get some consistancy from him.. Saying that Rodgers will not have dealt with big star personalities until now. Be interesting to see how it pans out..

  29. Just been watching SSN and that tosspot Blatter is demanding goal line technology is bought in after we benefited in last nights game.So where was his outrage when Lampards goal was a yard over the line and not given when we played Germany 👿 God I really hate that jumped up little **** ,His hatred for England is so obvious it’s only matched by that odious prat Platinis loathing of us .

      (Quote)

  30. Wouldnt want juan sheet back after his attitude at the end of his time here particularly blackpool away when his attitude was a fucking disgrace, Mind you its still an insult that the club that spent £75m on Henderson, Downing and Carroll can tell him he aint good enough… 😆

      (Quote)

  31. Of course if have Jose back, he’s the only goalkeeper in the league to not have conceded 😆

      (Quote)

  32. When England expects every man to do his duty, why does Gerrard flinch from blammers? Scouse wus! That sort of cowardice could be the difference between victory and defeat.
From blammer to Blatter, how long has it taken for the penny to drop that TV replays are needed and that the sky won’t fall on our heads if we have them? What qualifications has the guy got to run football? If it was a job and not a fiefdom, he’d have been shown the door years ago.

  34. Just watched last nights France v Sweden game and Debuchy proved to be the worst full back I’ve seen in a long time.

He was the furthest man up the field for most of the game and Sweden exploited his absence in defence on numerous occasions.

In the 23rd minute ( quarter of the game gone ) the ball was played out of defence to Debuchy who was on the half way line ( watching his co defenders from a distance ) and Ben Arfa went past him ,The commentator immediately announced that that was the first time Ben Arfa had been in front of Debuchy in the game.

If we sign Debuchy I can see Ben Arfa demanding a transfer.

Hope he keeps his place for the game against Spain – that should reduce his transfer fee to about £1m .

  36. Sidekick I never seen lastnights game but going by other reports he was brill in other games ? so who’s to know really, after all if you watched Messi or Kaka for their international side you probably would say they were pretty average players 😉

    Andy never worry mate 😀

    😉
Kaka’s overrated, theres a reason he isnt a Real regular, and it isnt just Ozil. Messi on the otherhand generally does really well for his country, bar the last World Cup he usually influences a game when picked (which he wasnt always in the past).

      (Quote)

  38. Kim yeah I heard that too 😉 I think they have just had a bad night

Andy there was games last year that Colo looked like a 1st div player, yeah I know what your saying but I just don’t think you can write him off on one game, as I said he was getting rave reviews in others 😉
As for Kaka I wouldn’t say no to him and think he’s better than just overrated 😯

I was thinking about adding it to my wish list fr NUFC related items (Shirt and maybe something for the lasses). They aren’t just the goals, right…it’s probably more than that, or at least I hope. 43. I think the Italian league is such a unique league, thats why their players rarely do well when playing in the PL and to a lesser extent La Liga. Rossi comes to mind (I know he was young and wasn’t given much of a chance but ya know).

      (Quote)

  44. You only have to look at our very own Jose ,great for us ,**** for the Dippers 😉 ,a lot depends on who you got playing around you and the system and tactics ,and not forgetting confidence. Every team has an off day and days when they look unbeatable ,god knows Toon do it enough. 😉

  45. ANDY the italy game is a whole differant mind set mate just look at m/u and chelsea how many top players they signed for real big money and flopped bet you could name a book full, just like the PL some players cannot hack it,in italy its slow quick slow, does my heed in couldnt watch that week after week

      (Quote)

  46. Ice
    Di Natale “Yeahhhhhhh we Scored!!!!”
Rossi “Shall we attack some more to put the game beyond doubt?”
Canavaro(don’t know any current Italy defenders) “NOO! Wwe shall defend solidly for the next seventy minutes, doing f-ck all else”
    🙄 🙄

  47. Ice ,thanks ,it’s not official yet but looks likely. If he’s anything like at Chelsea we should get off to a flyer against em in the first game. 😉

Will be tricky for him to deal with players wanting to depart ala Modric, VDV and Bale. Hopefully they’ll be severely weakened come Aug18, not that I’m not up for the challenge of as fully strong Spurs side for the first match.
