Pardew preparing for pre-season

Alan Pardew has said today that he can’t wait to get back in action once more and is already ready for pre-season.

The Manager of the Year has taken time out over the summer to enjoy some time with his family, and why not after such a successful season last time out and with the possibility of another big one this time round?

Personally I can’t wait for the start of pre-season either. It’s pretty dire on the news front to be truthful so once everyone gets back to work we might start seeing things moving along a bit, and there is still a lot that needs sorting this summer!

We have the whole saga with Demba Ba to get sorted one way or the other, our right-back conundrum with strong interest in Mathieu Debuchy being rumoured, a bid for a Dutch international midfielder that may or may not be revisited, plus now a firm interest in FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong. There is also the small issue of trying to keep our key players together ready for an assault on Europe.

Things are bubbling away underneath the surface and all it takes is one thing to happen to start a domino effect so that the others start to fall into place. Yes it’s quiet right now, which is less than handy for a blog writer I’m sure you’ll understand, but I very much doubt that will be the case come the end of the summer.

We need this squad strengthened, especially when you look at the numbers of players who are leaving us over the close season. Danny Guthrie is off and it looks like Leon Best may follow along with a few other inconsequential players like Alan Smith and perhaps Nile Ranger and Fraser Forster – not first choice by any stretch of the imagination but still a reduction in numbers that will, hopefully, be sorted by the time the big kick-off comes around.

So Alan Pardew isn’t the only one looking forward to pre-season by any stretch of the imagination. So are we!!!

The new season cant come soon enough, am now forced to look forward to the pre-season games which should be more interesting than last summers faff.

    Ginkoh says:

It’s time for Sammy Shane Vuckic Abeid and even Remie to move to next level. Some of our squad left and leave room to them for next season.

Who know ? Maybe we don’t need some big signing as everyone concern.

    toonsy says:

Ginkoh – I can see that happening to an extent. I think Amalfitano will replace one squad player, say Guthrie, but we’ll promote a youth to replace say Smith. If they are good enough and all that :)

    Munich Mag says:

Tie Ba up on a longer contract, a new right back, and I think we’ll be ok… we don’t need a lot of change, just a bit of tinkering here and there…

    Come on England !!

  5. 5
    icedog says:

think it needs a bit more than tinkering we need at least 3/4 players plus marv,as i said before have fans forgot how we got stuffed by m/c,out classed by wigan out classed at everton who had little to play for we were trying for CL kna more than a tinker needed wake up :x

    Andymag says:

I reckon Abeid is being shaped up to fill the Smith role, though he needs to be more disaplined to staying back instead of sometimes randomly charging forward and shooting from 40 yards (though he sometimes scores from it  ).

  7. 7
    icedog says:

yes we have a few young players to come through but you cannot throw them straight into the PL imo

    Ice
I reckon that S.Taylor may be the key, if he can stay fit through-out the season and the strikers do what they do then we have a genuine chance at achieving a solid CL place.

    Tsunki says:

I think Ba has been assessed as a player who needs to cover his own career first and foremost, hence the Cisse purchase, Ba’s slight sidelining, and pursuit of De Jong. Can’t blame Ba, his peculiar situation mans he must cover his career, it may be unexpectedly short. Thanks, anyway Demba.

I think the likes of sammy, vuckic and so on have only this season to show they can step up. The new approach seems to be geared to moving the non-starters on quickly while there’s still profit to be gained. It’s a good incentive too, good that we aren’t going to have perennial reservists draining cash and resources imo.

I reckon we have no chance of getting a CL place. All the “big clubs” who finished behind us last season will strengthen in the summer, Liverpool, Chelsea, and we’ll end up slogging it out for place 4 – 7, which isn’t too bad imo…

Icedog, the bairns will come through and Sammy Ameobi will replace Andy Carroll as England’s main central striker… ;-)

I just hope Marv can stay fit… seems to have a touch of class about him…Vuckic showed signs but is injury prone… feck me he hurt his bloody hand in one game after 5 mins.. if we can stay fit we should be good.. :-)

Jay Jay you old tartlet, we all need to live with the fact that Liverpool are a “big club” man… ;-)

Marv and big Sammy will be the plusses next season, you heard it here first. We just need tinkering, and we have a few tinkers at the club, so we should be all right…

Im not sure on the dippers, They have been given a tough start with thier first 3 homematches being again last seasons top 3 and the dollars all spunked up the wall by kenneth.

The squad is shite and overpaid, Carraghers finished, Suarez is a horrible little cunt who the refs are watching like a hawk, Mandy doesnt fit in with the swansea style, Gerrard is a year older and not as influential, The manager is too young and will be out of his depth IMHO but apart from that everything is fine…

    DJG says:

I think that Abeid, Amalfitano, Vuckic ect, they will be expected to step up this season so maybe we arn’t replacing Smith and Guthrie except for with these younger players. The likes of Donaldson, Airey, Folan and Henderson leaving shows that we haven’t developed our own player for ages. Only Krul, Ferguson and Sammy Ameobi are yet to become regulars.

  26. 26

    DJG says:

I think that we are being run in the right way at last though. When I saw the ‘Owen to Stoke’ think and that it was ’30 miles from his stables’ I thought, they are a club that have had a few seasons in the prem, got some money and could make the mistakes we made. They could think, we will sign owen and our fans will have an Owen shirt, when he would play about 10 games and cost them £2M per goal. We don’t seem to be going for these ‘big names’ anymore we have learnt from our mistakes and teams like Stoke, Norwich, QPR ect. are still learning. For them it is a dig deal for there fans to sign ‘big name’ players.

    Andymag says:

Thing about Liverpool’s fuck up in the transfer market that I live is we can compare moves financially i.e. for what Liverpool payed for Charlie Adam we were able to get Tiote and Cabaye for, for what Liverpool payed for no goal no assist Downing we got all of last season’s players for  .

  31. 31
    DJG says:

    CC @20

Gerrard has been awesome for England though, all the assists have pretty much been from him, just shows he doesn’t give a toss about Liverpool anymore IMHO, he knows he can’t carry them on his back anymore.

  32. 32
    Andymag says:

    DJG
Aye, his partnership with Caroll for England has been great, Liverpool fans must be scratching their heads(whislt stealing the wheels of a car  ) wondering how the hell werent they able to do that for them? Of course they’ll blame everything/one accept the players or Kenny.

I dont doubt they are a big club with a fantastic history but that has gone and their club in its current state whether they like it or not are on a similar level to us, Everton, Villa, Fulham and possibly even the mackems in aiming for the top half and on a great season nicking a european spot or a cup final… ;-)

    Ice @ 5
    Very harsh imo
    City were champions
Wigan turned over a fair few good teams in their late season run
Everton always end the season in style, their comeback against Man Utd astonishing for a team with “nothing to play for” against a team with everything to play for.

  50. 50
    SolanosTrumpet says:

    @MM @ 4

Add another CB and replacement for Best if he goes to that and i’d be delighted with the summer.

  51. 51
    SolanosTrumpet says:

I don’t see why it is too soon for some of the young players to step up, it’s not like we are throwing them in at the deep end in the first team, it’s as worthy members of the squad.

Last year some of our best performers/improvements to the team came from within. Krul and arguably Saylor came of age (seeing as there was much Willo vs Saylor debate this time a year ago) and HBA was effectively a new signing.

I’m going to have a punt on Marv being a decent challenger for LW and Abeid and Vuckic to this year come of age and be able to assert themselves as reliable back ups as Guthrie did last year.

  52. 52
    Munich Mag says:

SolanosTrumpet I’ll be sorry to see Best go, cos he’s been a canny servant for the toon and he knows where the goal is…

Don’t you think that Saylor will claim the centre half spot next year, with shaky Mike to back him up ?

    Come on England !!

  53. 53
    Munich Mag says:

Icedog @5 at the end of the day anyone can beat anyone in the Prem, fortunately we have a few players who can win games with a piece of magic from nothing, HBA, Cisse, Cabaye, Ba if he stays… and that made the difference for the toon last year, plus the fact that we were underestimated by a lot of clubs last year. That won’t happen this season, wor card has been marked…

  54. 54
    SolanosTrumpet says:

Yeah I’m a fan of him, would be more than happy if he stayed. Unfortunately he may be thinking along the same lines as Guthrie and leave in search of 1st team action.

Just think we need another reliable CB back up as I don’t like Perch playing there. Saylor showed at the start of the season that alongside Colo he can be fantastic though.

  55. 55

Aye Munich, my sights are set lower this season.
If our squad stays as it is (not counting the confirmed leavers Smith/Loven/Guthrie).
And we just sign one CB.

    Big Dave says:

Lets get it on, it can’t start soon enough.
Ice @ 5 I agree 100% ;-) need a tinker ???? we needed that last season and the way things look we’ll be short of another 4-5 players by the time the season starts :???: So how does anyone work out that probably after loosing Guthrie, Best, Lovens, Foster,Smith we still only need tinkering :???:
Teams like Manure and Citeh could maybe get away with a tinker but they will strenghten for sure as will Arse, Liverpool, Chelski etc

  77. 77
    icedog says:

    @Dave
Smith, Foster and Loven must have started 5 games between them, you can’t count them as losses to the squad!
Guthrie’s replacement has been brought in.
    Best hasn’t even left yet?!

CB aside our squad isn’t short of players at all. Quality is short in some areas, especially within back up positions, but in a lot of ways these are the positions hardest to fill as we don’t want to lumber ourselves with players not much better than what we have but we also don’t want proven players on high wages on the bench.

  80. 80
    richietoon says:

Agree Dave ;-) We have a few leaving who need replacing and hopefully with better quality to add to the depth of the squad. I’ll be happy with top 8 also but “tinkering” ain’t gonna do it, most other clubs in the top half and many in the bottom will be doing more than “tinkering”

Ice…To be fair to Ba, and as I said the other day the lad doesn’t know how long he’s got left playing with his knee so you can’t blame him for chasing the money…..thats what 99% of players do anyway, but if he’s after a big money move then tell Pards and get it done and let Pards plan for him going.

ST it doesn’t matter howmany games they played if they were in the squad and are no longer in it they need replaced no ?
Yeah Best hasn’t left yet but as I said If and it looks likely he’ll need replaced, so going by you we should be ok with Shola as the man to score the goals when Cisse is away and Ba if he’s still here.
As for we don’t want proven players on the bench ? so would you prefer non proven player because they are cheaper,
I don’t think Jabba needs any fans to look after his money as im sure he’ll make a good job of it himself.

Dave…it’s a good job Pards knows what we need…….whether he gets it though is a different story ;-)

  95. 95
    SolanosTrumpet says:

    @Dave
Obviously I would love for us to have a world class bench. But I just can’t see us stumping up huge wages for players that aren’t going to be first choice.
If you actually list our squad we are fairly well stocked in most areas, it’s just lack of quality, you can’t just bring in players on top of though constantly though. Look at spurs, they have people like jenas that are 6th choice or whatever on 50k a week. No way that’s going to happen here.

Also I think people need to consider that it is going to be very hard to retain a place in Europe for a following season, I think we’ll put up a good fight, but there’s four teams fighting for 5th place. We don’t want to inflate our squad to such an extent that should we fail to make Europe we’re in the shit.

  96. 96

And if we don’t make Europe there is a big chance that Cisse, Cabaye, Benny etc will not want to stick around so it would same that some fans that don’t want us to buy good players to progress would be happy enough for that to happen.
Even our players have said that we need to build on what we have, and as it is we have weakened ourselves in numbers atleast

    @Dave
I think we just differ on what we would see as strengthening. I would be happy if the rest of the squad remained intact and we signed a decent CB, possibly a RB/LB if Simmo still refuses to sign up.

Anything else and I would obviously be delighted. But i’m just as excited to see if we can continue as we did last year, and get some significant developments from the players we already have on the books. If any of Fergie/Abeid/Vuckic/Gosling/Sameobi/(Ranger  ) can improve as much as Raylor/Perch/Guthrie did then we will have a few more genuinely reliable squad players .

He is worth the money, but it is not a clever transfer… As you pointed out

  114. 114
    premandup says:

I think that we are stronger going into this season than last. We have Cisse, & Santon new, and Marv available. HBA has improved immeasurably and so have others.. In terms of our starting 11 only simpson appears to be leaving and that is not certain. As to the bench only Guthrie has gone and He has already been replaced. So the idea that we need to strengthen further because others will is IMHO flawed. Personally I feel that there is scope to improve the starting 11, Anita or Iborra could come in for Jonas at DM alongside Tiote, and we could definitely strengthen the squad especially in defence. Furthermore a striker to cover the ACON would help. Who out of our starting 11 would people like to replace and with whom??

  115. 115
    Munich Mag says:

SolanosTrumpet keep those nay sayers right mate… We need the bairns to step up this year and fill the voids in the squad. A couple of good defenders and a new striker perhaps and we’re in good shape….

  116. 116
    Andymag says:

As much as I love Jonas (and that I do  ) I think he will be the one to suffer from the change to the 433 system. He won’t be able to play the LW spot as its to advanced and he isn’t strong enough in front of goal, he isn’t strong enough defensively to play LB (and we have Santon there anyway) and he won’t be able to hold down the CDM role next to Tiote. The only way that I can see his services being used effectively is when the team looks like this (I’ve replaced Simmo with Debuchy cus I think it fits better and I’ve kept Ba for arguments sake)
    —————————Krul————————–
    -Debuchy—-S.Taylor—-Coloccini—-Santon-
    —————————Tiote————————-
    —–Cabaye————————–Gutierrez—–
    ————————-Ben Arfa———————-
    ——————-Cisse———-Ba——————
This system allows for crosses to come in whilst the midfield can support the defence, Debuchy/Santon is able to overlap the midfielder when attacking, HBA is in a more free role and Ba will be able to get more goals alongside Cisse so that the goals will be more evenly spread out, reducing frustration. Opinions?

    Andymag says:

Guys I have a problem, I want to buy my dad tickets for the Newcastle v Tottenham game (1st game of season) for his Birthday (Aug 3), but I’m thinking that the general ticket sales wont be till after his birthday, can someone confirm this/suggest what I could do?

  118. 118
    premandup says:

Andymag, I agree that playing with 1 defensive midfielderallows three attacking midfielders and 2 strikers, and I can see that happening on occassion. The only change to your line up is Cabaye centrally with HBA on the right. Also I feel that with Marv being a natural left footed wide midfielder he will cosolidate his place this season. I expect that we will play with 2 CDM and 1 striker especially away.

    .

  119. 119
    jay jay says:

Andy mag, tickets usually go on sale 2 weeks before a match, to have more chance of getting tickets you could buy a membership so you can buy before general sale or if you know a season ticket holder ask them to get tickets for you.

  120. 120
    Andymag says:

    Premandup
I don’t think switching Cabaye and Ben Arfa wouldn’t work effectively, Cabaye is stronger at holding the midfield defensively and can spread passes a lot better, this allows Hatem to get forward more, when he would be restricted to such from the rm/rcm role. Also I think Marv will get alot of sub appearances/cup games but I don’t think he’ll overtakes Jonas’ place.

  121. 121
    Andymag says:

    Jay Jay
I have a login thingy on the nufc site is that the same thing as a membership? I don’t know any season ticket holders

  122. 122
    jay jay says:

No mate, a membership costs £25 i think and they send you a pack with some goodies and vouchers, which is usually 6 months late

  123. 123

    Jay Jay
I’m not that then  , sh;t what am I gunna do? Spose I could give him an ‘I owe you two tickets to see NUFC v Spurs’ card

  169. 169
    Big Dave says:

Kim maybe its because we’re like ships in the night
As for Carroll I think he would cause them all sorts of bother, the same as I thought Walcot should have started ahead of Milner. Now Johnson I really don’t know how he gets picked for England or the Dippers I think he’s shite

  170. 170
    kimtoon says:

  176. 176
    Big Dave says:

Kim Mario should have scored at least twice  so maybe it’s Englands night, but I can see them scoring but can’t really see England unless they change. I could see Carroll scoring and being the saviour

  177. 177
    kimtoon says:

Dave ,yeh cause we are getting crosses in ,set up for AC really ,don’t think they could handle him.

  178. 178

I would just calmly walk to duncairn gardens, no fear mate ;-)

  181. 181
    Big Dave says:

MM I think Carroll offers England a lot more than welbeck

  182. 182
    AndrewT says:

Regarding next season, Sammy could really develop to be a decent attacker across the front 3. His height, pace, and dribbling could be lethal, just needs a little maturity in how to handle situations.
Vuckic looks like he could fill in one of those attacking roles, but seems to prefer to play as an attacking midfielder, spraying around passes and being support.
I really can’t nail down Abeid yet. The lad’s got plenty of ability and potential, but I don’t know if he’s better on the wings or in the center. He definitely likes getting forward, and could be a wildcats for us to bring on this year.
Ferguson has apparent talent. The question is whether he should be used as a winger or fullback.
Marveaux is definitely gonna come good. I really don’t know avout Gosling though. Doesn’t seem to know what to do half the time. I guess the same could be said about Obertan. Although I would really like to see how he would do on the left wing, cutting in with his ball skills and lightning pace

  183. 183
    kimtoon says:

    What a miss

  184. 184
    Munich Mag says:

Big D all three Mancs up front are just strolling through the game. Rooney looks unfit if you ask me. Hoy Carroll on, cross from Gerard, header boom 1-0 watch out Germany…it’s just a matter of time ;-)

  185. 185
    Munich Mag says:

AndrewT, the good thing about the three bairns you just mentioned is that they can all play differing positions… If one of them makes the FULL breakthrough this season it will be brilliant. I reckon Abeid is perhaps still 1 year behind those lads…

  186. 186

You know what ,I think lady luck may just be with us here

  190. 190
    Big Dave says:

Andrew I had high hopes for Sammi and Vuckic but I think they need loaned out to a champ side for some regular footie otherwise I think they’ll just fade away, like we have been saying the samething about Vuckic for the last few seasons.
Carroll will give them a rough time as will Walcot

  191. 191
    kimtoon says:

Ice AC and Walcott I think

  192. 192

Speaking with an unbias opinion, England were the most boring and technically deficient team in the competition.

They were out passed by Ukraine, Sweden and France.

I’ll give them credit or excellent defending. But a footballing country like England shouldnt have to resort to winning with Greece like play.

I could understand if they were minnows…

Germany would have murdered them. Spain would have prevented them from even touching the ball…

The best four teams are now in the semis… All on merit.

I had no confidence in Young scoring the penalty, he was crap for the whole tournament. Also is Rooney the most over-rated England player of all time? Old man Pirlo bossed the midfield and the game.

  247. 247
    Wellington says:

JJ, you could scarcely be more wrong.

    1. Fanatical adherence to a particular style of football is no more unbiased than a one-eyed belief in a particular team.
    2. You’re over-stating the technical deficiency. Ireland are clearly a worse team, and there were other arguable cases.
    3. Sweden’s 497 to 493 superiority in passing was not much to write home about – particularly as the lead was driven by a 63 to 56 lead in long passes.
    4. England’s defending isn’t actually that good. They conceded the second-highest shots per game (just after Ireland) A vulnerability in set-piece situations was quite apparent in the game against Sweden.
    5. You rate England as the least technically gifted side: why are you complaining about them not trying to play like the more skilled sides?
    6. You rate England well outside of the favourites: why are you complaining about them not playing like the favourites?
    7. Imagined results may be whatever one wishes. But try to recall November, April and May before translating possession into victory.

    JJ says:

    Wellington

    You are making poor statements.

What I was simply saying is that for a country as fanatical about football as England, with a massive population and perhaps the mist popular league in the world. They really should be performing at a much higher standard and playing a far better technical style of football.

To compare them to Ireland is a joke. The two countries are on different scales in terms of potential. Ireland did well to qualify.

  250. 250
    Wellington says:

JJ – if it’s a joke to compare England to Ireland, you should be talking to the guy at 244. He was the one that suggested Ireland are the technically better team! ;-)

And my main point, regarding your style bias, stands. You are essentially promoting the idea that Chelsea should emulate Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

  251. 251
    richietoon says:

Aussie@246…thanks, I was feeling a bit down but that message of condolence that came straight from the heart has made me feel so much better  …..and @248 Ice made me do it

  252. 252
    JJ says:

    Wellington
My statement that I am unbias was purely political because I’m South African.

In truth, despite my English heritage, I can’t stand and English International sports team ;-) , so yes I’m not really unbias…

I did find it funny however, how the English journalists were accussing Spain of being boring to watch, when they play remarkable football (IMO) to watch.

I stand my the rest of my statement. England (whether by a couple passes) were out passes by Ukraine, France, Sweden and Italy.

They may have conceded the most chances, but chances and goals are two very different things. And so, their defence was impressive, considering how their midfield was so bossed during the tournament.

Bit rich when from my point of view, England can sometimes make Greece look like Barcelona.

  253. 253
    kimtoon says:

The truth is and has been for a while now is that we have so many overseas players in the PL that we are left with few really good English players to choose from. It’s the same with the Scotland team as well ,just think back to the years befor the PL I can remember great English and Scottish players. The reason the PL is so watched and admired is because of the overseas talent on display if we are being honest ,just look at Toon ,our outstanding players are Cisse, HBA, Tiote, Colo, Cabaye, Ba ,. Most teams are the same in that there flair players are not British. We have a fundemental problem at youth level as we seem to coach any individual flair out of youngsters less they seem to be too selfish in play! when the truth is these types of players turn a match and win you games.
When a flair player does break through such as Gazza we overhype them and put them under immense pressure to the point they crack such is our lack of these players. Truth is we need to emmulate the Spanish way of coaching youth and plough more money into coaching at youth level at lower league clubs. Ian Holloway wrote an article in the Sunday Mirror on this very subject ,suggesting we use PL t.v money to that end and it was a good article ,reccomended reading .

  254. 254
    JJ says:

    Kimtoon

Joe Cole, was one of the most talented players I’ve seen. He went to Chelsea and got pushed out of the team by better overseas players.
As such he never developed into anything close to what he could have been had he got regular football.

    It is a shame.

  255. 255
    Groucho says:

Kim you are right on the over-hyping. Players like Rooney are made to think they are better than they are. Rooney is a great Premier League player but not imo international class. Look at his record in internationals. Yet he is an automatic choice. As for Young, how did he continue to get picked after the first game? Milner performed better yet was withdrawn.

  256. 256
    Groucho says:

Maybe we as fans are also to blame. We criticise players like Enrique and Colo when they try to play football out of defence. Same with Benny when he loses the ball trying something different. In short we encourage hoof ball and kick and rush. Not all fans are guilty, of course.

  257. 257
    JJ says:

The last world class player England had was David Beckham. He was an incredible player.

  258. 258
    JJ says:

I think the next best was Paul Scholes. He was the closest thing England had to Xavi.

  259. 259
    kimtoon says:

JJ, Exactly why should he of made way ,it’s not right.

Groucho@255 ,Rooney is the most overated England player ever and was woefull last night ,his legs were gone ,AC was dropping back laying balls off for him to run onto when it should of been the other way round tbh. How Defoe never got on I dont know ,what was the point in taking him ?. As for Rooney I have never seen him have a really good tournament . Also I am still puzzled why Young and Cole stepped up to take a pen befor AC ! very strange that. As soon as Young stepped up I knew he would miss it ,same with Cole. ;-)

  260. 260
    kimtoon says:

JJ@258 Totally agree on Scholes ,wonderful player ,on Beckham he was a master of deadballs and had real presence . Much as I hate him I have to give JT credit and Stevie G also ,I thought they were both immense for us in the circumstances. Fact is I’m not blaming the players ,they are what they are and the spirit was there for all to see ,Roy did a brilliant job .But we are miles off Spanish ,Italian ,German and Dutch levels. The Dutch and French went out because of egos not skill imo. ;-)

  261. 261
    aussie magpie fan says:

Richie, I’m glad that message picked you up mate :-) A few days back when we were talking the finer art of football (bullshitting) I mentioned that the England / Italy game would end in penalties.. one day England will come out the right side of a shootout. :-) :-)
In all seriousness England have a very talented ‘group’ of players… sadly no team…

  262. 262
    aussie magpie fan says:

Beckham was shite in my opinion… took a good free kick and could swing a cross but apart from that he was average.. Giggs leaves him for dead in regards to being a complete footballer… at least he can dribble with the ball.. Becks would have to be the most over rated plyer ever…

  263. 263
    JJ says:

Gerrard is brilliant, but just too injury prone and has too many off games. On his day he is an incredible driving midfield dynamo.

I think Hart has potential to be a great. Ashley Cole is usually excellent too. There are some very good players. But they can’t play as a team because there are too many technical weaknesses.

If I picked the England Starting eleven, this is who I’d go with…

  264. 264
    kimtoon says:

    JJ ,no AC then ;-)

  265. 265
    JJ says:

    Aussie,

Beckham’s crossing was the best in the world, his passing was outstanding, he didn’t need to beat his man because he could find his strikers from anywhere.
He was incredible from set pieces. Had a good engine too.
I’d say during his time he was in the top three right sided attacking midfielders in the world.

  266. 266
    JJ says:

    Kimtoon,

Not in that team no… with Scholes, Wilshere, Gerrard, Rooney and Oxlaid- Chamerlain/Johnson, I’d have to believe there’s enough technique to pass the ball around the park, rendering Carroll redundant…

I might have him in the squad and shove him on against Spain… ;-)

  267. 267
    aussie magpie fan says:

JJ, if you call perching yourself on a wing a crossing it as soon as you get it, than yes, he was great.. not my type of footballer.. he never tried to beat a man because he couldn’t. not saying your opinion is wrong mat but becks ability levels were boomed up via the press..

  268. 268
    richietoon says:

    Aussie ;-)

England will never get any better under the current set up, they should have overhauled the whole set up from top to bottom after the last WC, it’ll never happen, They’ve caused teams problems on the odd occasion they tried to play football, problem is they try it so rarely. We seem to be quite happy to let teams come at us and hit them on the break which is fine if you have a pacey world class midfield and forwards…we don’t.
Average players, average manager, shit set up, not really a recipe for success

JJ… I said Spain and Germany before the start of the tournament, was just hoping England could surprise me

  274. 274
    JJ says:

    Richie,

I was hoping England would meet my expectations, and they did… good on them…
I just can’t bring myself to support a team consisting of players from teams I despise.
Would like to see Germany win… I don’t see anyone beating Spain though.

  275. 275
    JJ says:

    Whats up Toonsy?

Can’t you drive a bus and type a story at the same time?

I tell you what, I might bang one out this afternoon for you… And then I might try type an article too…

Good idea for an article perhaps because the conversation it sparked was good; with players like Lover, Guthrie and Smith leaving can we get away with just having youngsters step up, or do they need replacing despite the fact they probably played ten games between them.

    aussie magpie fan says:

Yeah Ice, I never bought into the Becks hype. Saw him play centre mid against Australia in a game once and he was feckin inept.. I see Richie dumped you in it earlier,I was surprised because he is not normally like that :-)

  304. 304
    aussie magpie fan says:

JJ :-) :-) Troy doesn’t like it when some one out smarts him, he will be sitting next to his keyboard, desperate to write something in return but he can’t because he knows he will be falling into my well set trap once again :-) and as Troy would say – whoo hoo

    kimtoon says:

Ice @310 I’m confused by that interview as it completely contradicts what he and Carr said in a previous interview at the end of the season . Remember when they said they accept we’ll probably have to sell a top player in order to bring some in, now apparently we are not a selling club  :???: ;-)

  317. 317
    CC says:

In hindsight as gutting as it was at the time, I dont think any club could turn that offer down for Mandy, But the situation is different now we are in a far better position on and off the pitch, It will be interesting to see when the next offer does come because is taking £20m-£30m worth it when they could make 3 or 4 times that by qualifying for the champions league, Finishing higher up in the league and being on telly more…

    richietoon says:

Maybe Ashley’s/the clubs stance has changed or maybe we just read too much into interviews and quotes. We all contradict ourselves at times, we’ll give different answers to similar questions and how you answer them can depend on mood, how the question is asked, who asks it, etc etc. I don’t doubt Ashley would like to keep this team together and improve it, I don’t doubt he’s made cash available to the manager that doesn’t depend on selling a “big name” player, I also don’t doubt that if a “Carrollesque” type offer came in for a player he’d take it and probably rightly so… que sera sera ;-)

  341. 341
    Big Dave says:

Andy I was just checking there Best played 1163 mins and scored 4 goals Shola 1004 mins and 2 goals so between them they played 2167 mins with a grand total of 6 goals maybe you and others are happy with that but I expect better when you consider Cisse played 1113 mins with 13 goals in a new team, league and country ;-)

  348. 348
    Andymag says:

‘Buy one get one free’ yeah I knew that one  . I don’t think Shola generally comes on to score goals, Pards brings him on for his tremendous hold-up play, few are better at it and I stand by that statement as if you actually watch him when he comes on his close control is brilliant as is his short passing and heading ability, both of which he used when he teed off Cisse for the wonder-strike v Chelsea, and Shearer’s goal v Everton.

  349. 349
    Big Dave says:

Andy he is supposed to be a striker and his job should be to score goals.
Believe it or not I HAVE watched him thanks, and yeah sometimes he possesses the skills you talk of and yeah he set Cisse up but that doesn’t mean we have to over look the fact he is a shit striker.
But if you actually watch him you must also see that he continually gives the ball away, breaks down attacks, gets caught offside, spends most of his time on his arse, is as slow as a tortoise and he can’t score ;-) but don’t let that put you off him

Kim I see that every single day at work , and I often get asked to do stupid stuff that I know they’ll regret but if I think it’s wrong I won’t do it.
But the sad thing is someone else will do it for them.
As for cover up work I generally get a buzz out of it as 99% of the time the client has hid it for yonks and is normally embarrassed of it, so when I finish with it they are usually over the moon with it ;-)
Laser can be a strange thing we had one but we normally only used it to lighten a tattoo so that we could cover it with something, but I do know that Laser companies charge a fortune for it and normally have it turned down so that it doesn’t remove it to quick.

It’s beautifully done but really inappropiate as she admits herself now. ;-) I’m not anti tattoos I love em ,when they are well thought out and in the right place . ;-)

  358. 358
    Big Dave says:

Kim that wasn’t a very good place to get tattooed :???: I take it she has others :?:

  359. 359
    kimtoon says:

Dave ,only a star on her hip that she had done whilst at school  Took me two years to discover that little gem :lol Apparently the laser hurts more than the tattoo did ;-)

  360. 360
    Big Dave says:

Kim thats a shit place to get your 1st real tattoo, and whoever done it should have tried to talk her out of it, but sometimes the client thinks they are 100% sure that thats what they want and will never change there mind.
I was asked by one of my regulars to tattoo the side of her neck but I told her that I think she was making a mistake but she insisted that she wanted it, so I told her to comeback in a few months and if she still wanted it I would do it for half price.
But I didn’t need to because she changed her mind and realised that it was too much.
Yeah laser is a bit nippy I have blasted meself with one a few times but Tattoo removal acid is even nippier

  361. 361
    kimtoon says:

Dave ,Removal acid  wow ,never heard of that ,that’s a bit hardcore ;-)

  362. 362
    Axel says:

News filtering through here in Holland that newcastle are interested in Tovinen from PSV . Hope to god it does not happen ,he’s a idiot ala Ballotelli

  363. 363
    Big Dave says:

Kim you have to try these things

  364. 364
    kimtoon says:

Dave , I did a lot worse than her in my youth but I’m not about to tell her that ;-)

  365. 365
    Axel says:

BIG DAVE a question for you mate , my daughter is 15 and wants a tattoo me wife said she can have it and although i am well covered in tats i said no . I think at 15 its far too early too get one , she wants a sort ring on her finger . Am i being to hard to say no .

  366. 366
    kimtoon says:

Axel ,whats he done that’s bad enough for us to give him a wide birth ? ,I don’t know much about him really.

    Andymag says:

    Axel
Not that scary man   , sold him on FIFA when I was 10 cus his pic scared me :???:

  368. 368
    Big Dave says:

Axel no your not being to hard mate, its actually against the law to tattoo anyone under 18 even WITH their parents consent, I have tattooed 17 yr olds that I knew or their parents were customers, but it was more through the fear that they would go to a tattoo party and get something stupid by some fuking knob that thinks they know what they’re doing.
I have tattooed my 3 daughters the 1st 2 I tattooed when they were 17 the youngest I done for her 18th, 15 IMO is far too young mate and especially somewhere that is so visible and cant be hid

  369. 369
    Axel says:

BIG DAVE cheers m8 , here its not against he law if the parents give written permission , which i think is a disgrace . imo 18 should be the youngest age allowed . Its good that you covered some 17 year old’s though better a real tattoo artist like you than a knob with a tat gun

  370. 370
    Axel says:

KIMTOON every thing Ballotelli does he learned from Tovinen , the guy is a nutter .

Axel…What’s Toivonen done wrong then? can’t find owt on wiki and his disciplinary record doesn’t seem that bad(though he did pick up a few yellows last season)…or is he just a general alround loon lik Balotelli?
