Santon set to stay and fight for his place

Santon welcomes competition
Davide Santon has revealed that he is happy on Tyneside and would welcome any competition that our summer transfer dealings could bring in over the next couple of months.

In a frank interview with CalcioMercato, Santon also revealed that United rebuffed attempts from Roma who enquired about the availability of the former Inter Milan player last season.

All in all it’s good stuff and I’m glad that Santon is relishing the competition that signing a new full back would create rather than looking for assurances over his role in the team. After a slow start to his Newcastle career he started to show his quality towards the end of last season and if he can continue to do that then he is right not to worry about competition as he’ll be in the team anyway.

“Debuchy to Newcastle? I am calm,” Santon told calciomercato.com.

“Pardew had told me that he had thought about playing me on the right, but also that another right-back would come.

“Debuchy or whoever is welcome, especially if it is a good player who can help the team. Then, we’ll see who the coach decides to pick.”

Good words from Santon there, but what about the interest from Roma?

“I know Roma are looking for a right-back and they showed interest in me some time ago, but Newcastle immediately refused to give me up,” said Santon.

“That’s okay for me because I have familiarised myself in England and I have no plans to move. I’ve only been here for a year and it is too early to pack up and come back to Italy.”

Happy to stay and happy to fight for a place in the team. Can you ask for much more?

It’s early days for Santon still, but I really think the lad can be a big player for us in years to come.

Do you agree?

  1. Big D….at the end of the day, the bloke is either sold on the club or not… no amount of press blather will change that. Plus we have to pay the wedge too of course. At the end of the day not everyone can play for the “top” clubs, so we can move in on the qt and get players signed up… 😉

  2. MM ,either way it’s gonna be an interesting season that’s for sure. Just hope our Euro games don’t drag our league position down too much and also praying for not too many bad injuries too ,especially if we don’t get in the players we want. Don’t get me wrong I’m not miffed at MA&co as we have done well in the player stakes so far .But just feel other clubs are wise to our tactics a bit now and will hold out for their fair share .

The interviewer actually asked about Debuchy, Santon didn’t just randomly name-drop.

  4. Andymag@76 😆 😆 😆 aye, but he’s wor puppet, at least at the moment 😉

At the end of the day, we shouldn’t underestimate how the profile of Pardew has changed since he joined NUFC, ffs he won all the prizes going last season, so he should have some bargaining power as far as transfers go…

As much as I love Saylor I’ll give up all hope on him if he’s injured long term again next season.

  6. Well, VDV has been linked away but Levy is a tight ******* and I’m not sure if Hamburg will be able to afford him….as well as wages, he must still be pretty high after moving from Madrid..plus it’ll depend on how convincing AVB is i guess.

Don’t really get modric to Madrid either…Osil is better if you ask me.

  7. kimtoon@78, I think you have it spot on there. It stands to reason that with a far more increased commitment next season, euro travels, and with a reduced squad, then we will struggle to repeat last seasons heroic league feats.
I’m personally prepared for us to have a dip, compared to last season, first for the reasons you mention, that we may have been found out, and second the fact that other clubs at the upper end of the table are currently strengthening moreso than we…

I may be castigated for it, but I personally know where our place is, and it’s between 3rd and 7th place, with us giving the big guns a run for there money, and regularly beating the makkems home and away…sad but true…

  8. kimtoon aye I’ve seen that, plus it’s hoyking down in Laaaandan and they’ve closed the roof, which apparently is to Federer’s advantage cos he’s the best indoor player in the world. Come on Andy, give it your best… 😉

  9. Andymag….are you a Scot ? If so, do you want Gandi Murray to win Wimbleedon ?

  10. MM
Lived in Scootland the majority of my life(still there now hence my avatar) so yeah I want Murray to win and am watching the match.

  11. MM ,It’s a really close match mind , not really into tennis like ,but it’s very stressfull watching it ,Andy working his socks off but Federer is a tough nut to crack ,been playing 3rd game for 17 mins now .

  12. Kim
I thought it’d been about that. Man, I had a feeling Federer would finish it there.

  13. Andy ,really don’t see Andy doin it ,Feds got the bit between his teeth now . 4.2 up now and looking ominous 🙁

  14. Supporting Murray cause he’s a “brit” and because I hate federer, but in all honesty they’re both boring personally and federer players the better Tennis so i’m not that invested in this final…

  15. Munich-Agree with the 3-7 thing as well tbh, essentially its four teams fighting over two CL spots and we’re the weakest of them, and currently showing the least signs of strengthening so i’m not expecting much as far as that goes. Any European football next season would be nice…quite fancy an F.A cup as well if Pards and the lads don’t mind pulling their fingers out this year… 😛

  16. Just to clarify, don’t think toon will punish Cabaye coz he really said much untoward, just a little ‘right, class dismissed … Yohan, could you hang on a minute, I need a word’ kinda job from Pardz.

Spurs look canny at the mo, but I do fancy VDV to leave coz he doesn’t seem to fit the AVB style of play. Also see Modric leaving to raise finds for CFs. Can also see the likes of Galas, Bentley, Jenas, Pinear and Huddlestone being listed – coz although they are probably better off than us, they aren’t a bottomless pit either. King may also face the chop thinking about it

  17. Wouldn’t mind if we went in for Pienaar this summer….we should have got him off Everton in the first place, cheeky little player, would be well suited to our 4-3-3. could cover the left or right and could even have given the centre a go. Won’t happen tho 😥

  18. Oh oh, the fat lady has got the gargle water out…. Andy Murray is on melt down mode… 🙁

  19. Gosh ,Andy murray so emotional at the interview with sue ,poor bloke looks crestfallen 🙁 Nevermind at least he gets £500k runners up prize and he’s still young enough to try again.

  20. Unlucky Andy Murray, at the end of the day you can only give it your best shot…

      (Quote)

  21. MM ,he actually played really well but Fed played some genius stuff in parts when it mattered. Andy can certainly hold his head up as he was good but was undone once that roof got closed .

      (Quote)

  22. Kimtoon, never saw a a single second of the game, though I did follow it on the internet. Murray is probably so devastated cos he probally realises he’ll never get a better chance than this… 🙁

      (Quote)

  23. Murray did well but unfortunately he’s just not as good as Federer, Nadal or Djokovic. Murray was playing some of his best stuff, but Federer had a very poor first set and after that got back to his best.

He’ll get another shot….Federer will retire at some point, Nadal will probably pick up some more knee injuries and Djokovic may just get knocked out, or Murray may beat one himself…not sure he’ll ever win in wimbledon though, Australian might be his best chance.

  24. I’m glad to read that Santon will stay for the near future. Just a couple of points:

While there were no other Italians at the club to help Davide settle in, Coloccini was based at Milan from ’99 to ’04 (although he was loaned out to Spanish-speaking countries for much of that time). I’m fairly sure that the captain is fluent in Italian.

Regarding values, Transfermarkt puts Debuchy’s current value at 9.7 million pounds – the same as Cabaye’s at the time of his 4.4 million transfer from Lille.

  25. Wellington
Colo and Jonas are either half or a quarter Italian, they had the option to play for either country but both chose Argentina. So they’re bound to know a little Italian, which is good as in means he could communicate with Jonas on the wings and Colo could boss the defence telling Davide what to do.

  26. I think Santon’s english is coming along anyway, first season is always hard and I never expect foreigners to be charismatic interviewees (which English players are) just good enough to understand the team talks, tactics and communicate onfield. As far as I can tell, Santon has picked up English pretty well…certainly he knows…DAVEEEEEEEED well enough, I hear Jonas shout it enough 😆

  27. Eminem, Amini is a handy player, good on the ball and composed for his age… Doesn’t seem to have a burst of speed though. Seen him play a fair bit in the A League… He does have a wad of hair… probably no more than Richie has on his back

Spanish paper mentioning Cabaye(along with others) as a possible replacement for Keita 🙄

  30. Sick all the paper talk Rich, I don’t think I have ever read such a collection of bullshit like that of the papers…. they seem to pick names at ramdom and link them to a story…. over it big time…. 👿

  31. Aye…it lists a few possible replacements who coould go to Barca and be about 8th choice central midfielder 😕

  32. I see Spuds have got Adebayor for £8mil!

    That’s a bargain if you ask me…

And just makes a mockery of De Jong’s price tag.

If Man City are willing to let players go that cheap surely a £9mil pound offer for Johnson would be worth it.

      (Quote)

  33. Or Guidetti who has been just as prolific as De Jong in the Dutch league.

Surely £5/6mil would be enough for him.

Either way I sincerely hope we don’t get De Jong now.
