Would you still buy Debuchy?

Debuchy with his mate.
There are rumours left right and centre about Mathieu Debuchy. Nobody knows really, some say he’s staying at Lille, some say he’s going to Inter Milan and quite a few say he’ll be joining Newcastle if we can agree a fee.

From what I’ve sign from Mathieu I’ve been very impressed, he was one of the shining lights in the French team who were not so impressive at the Euro’s and has been solid for Lille in the past few seasons, but do we really need a right back?

Davide Santon was shaky at times last year but showed promise as the season drew to a close. His problem is that he’s right footed, and while he can play left back, I feel he’d be more assured at right back as his attacking runs forward would be much more dangerous if he could cross from the byline and go by his man on the outside.

The arrival of Mathieu Debuchy would almost guarantee that Davide Santon would be continuing to play on the left hand side of the defence, where he struggled at times last year. Davide should be given a chance on the right hand side if we fail to land Debuchy, but it’d also make me wonder whether we really need him.

Yes, Debuchy is a good player and he’s good to watch, but what you have to think is, do we really need him? The answer to that is probably no. Our defence would be much more balanced if we were to have natural left footer play at left back as it’d allow Jonas to cut in, with the full back overlapping.

There’s some options which we could look if we were to bring in a left back this summer, and some targets we may have already looked at.

Erik Pieters would be a player we could reignite our interest in. We spent a large amount of last summer trying to bring in the Dutch left back but failed in our attempts, which led to the signing of Santon. Erik struggled with injury last season and didn’t play as much as he would have liked but the talent is definitely there, and i’m almost sure that he will have been a “Carr choice” so we may look at him again.

Aly Cissokho is another man who the Newcastle scouts have looked at in the past, but he was too pricey at the time, which meant the deal was not viable. He would be a player who could play in the left back role and another player we’ve been long term admirers of. The 24 year old left back was once one of the most highly thought of full backs in Europe, but his form has dipped in the last year or so. Pardew could possibly get the best out of him.

It’s also rumoured that Cissokho’s agent is in England to try and find Aly a club, so this one could be a “behind the scenes deal”.

Vurnon Anita is a player who’s been linked with us this summer and he can play left back as well as the centre midfield role. Ajax have said that the player can leave for £8 million and if we were looking for a left back he could be a player we look at, as Pardew has spoken about his wish for versatile players, that’d be very useful for our long season ahead. Anita seemed keen on the prospects of Newcastle, and despite it being a long shot he could be a target for that reason.

There’s other left backs we’ve been credited interest in such as Ezekiel Fryers, Bruno Bertucci, Martin Olsson and Nicolia Boilesen, or it could be a random player out of the blue. But I just think that we don’t really need a right back.

So, would you pursue a deal for a right back? or would you look at signing a left back?

  1. How about get rid of simpson, sign Cissokho 4-5mil and Clyne for 2-3mil compensation then alternate Clyne n Santon RB and Aly Cissokho LB.
Santon can also play LB obvs incase injuries occur?

  2. Very good article Andrew , yeah I think a left back would be a higher priority for me. Debuchy from what I saw of him in the Euros looked good esp going forward and in an ideal world we would bring him in and left back. But this is not a ideal world and Pards saying he can only see 3 players coming in , I would imagine it be a fullback centre back and an attacker ( Holliett if you belive the papers ) so I would get a leftback in , move over Santon to right back. But we shall wait and see.

  3. Definately need a RB. Even if we sign a LB and Santon goes to RB, we will still need cover incase Santon or LB get injured or suspended (assuming Simpson f**** off)

  4. hmmm, interesting stuff. We need and will have shortly a new CB. That’s a given. I feel sure we will get a new RB and I still believe it will be Debuchy. Slightly disagree about the left back and that is not a priority IMO. Santon can play both but I think Pardew will leave him where he is. We have cover for both positions IMO. We have S.Taylor who can play RB and we have R Taylor to cover LB. We also have Ferguson and Jonas and a couple of youngsters. We will not get a LB, mark my words. We absolutely need a central midfielder which none of you have mentioned. We have youngsters and Perchy but we must replace Guthrie. If Cabaye or Tiote are injured we will struggle. I think we need two forwards. One will be Hoilett IMO and we need another. We will deliver a surprise here and we will all be happy. That one is only gut feel. Four signings to come and lots more pace and youth and a run in Europe to boot. Toon Toon !!

  5. I would rather put santon over on the right in his natural position and then get Pieters in on the left for 6 million. to me, i would prefer that…. we cant go too french.

  6. we need debuchy as well as a lb, cb and st. we need adequate cover for injuries. sorry but there’s no way williamson and perch are good enough cover. we need debuchy, either peiters or cissokho, douglas and i’d say miaga or possibly look at giroud again

      (Quote)

  7. Debuchy is not a full back and we should not even consider him for this position.

I can still see Jonas being used as RB / LB this season.

If we bring in Douglas at CD then Saylor can be cover for CD and RB.
If we go for Yanga-Mbiwa we would have him and Saylor available for the CD and RB positions.

  8. Aloha all.
Seen this morning that pards has admitted interest in hoilet
fits the bill perfectly: young, talented and free!
Hoilet, clyne, good cb and a young striker and we’ll have had a cracking window.

Russell: gosling/abeid/coventry guy/amilfitino? think that’s back up for cm sorted.

  9. i dont think we will sign anyone at all unless simmo moves on. i think ashleys blueprint will continue in that we have to generate our own funds to buy players by selling what we already have. We have sold fraser and best so we should have around 5 million to spend i expect… nothing more though. We may get Junior in for a nominal fee to Blackburn but that would depend on his wage demads and if he wants 50k per week then we will not pay it of course, we would prob give around 30k tops. Which i do not know why as we have got rid of so many names of the payroll since the end of last season.. smith alone was 70k per week ffs. Then best, loven, guthrie, fraser… we have to be well over 130k per week savings minimum in salaries. But Ahley did say that there would be no more outlay on players, so we at least know where we stand.

  10. I still believe we will play cabaye deeper alongside tiote. with hba behind a lone striker. then we could play marveaux on the left, try and sign hoilet for the right.

Cabaye is good going forward but we saw how brutal we were at defending with him more defensively and saylor in the team. then we can just let the likes of cisse and hba wreak havoc going forward.

If we are playing cabaye pushed forward then we need a first choice cm as last season we were playing Jonas there. guess that is the anita link.

  11. TBh, i dont think we need much in the way of new blood. i think a defo is the right wing and either RB or LB. With Staylor back, marv back, gosling looking good, harris, fergie etc..all coming through. Sooner or later we have to trust these young lads and say ok, sod buying an established name.. we will promote from within. I think we may well see that this season. i think i agree with that. i dont realy care if we do not get another forward. We have cisse, ba and stroller and numerous options for one up upfront and someone in the hole.

  12. Debuchy has always been my first choice since the season finished. Him and Santon either side with Colo and Taylor in the middle would be a brilliant defence and one that could make an even better start than last season. I think Debuchy could be worth 15 million after one season in the Premier League so I would gladly pay up to 10million and anything less would be a bargin in my eyes.

      (Quote)

  13. @Craig think our attacking signing will signal what formation.we.will mostly be playing next year. if we are just playing one striker.as you said it may make more sense to strengthen the wings and have ba and cisse fight out the striker slot.

      (Quote)

  14. Giroud has signed with the gunners, so no real point going back for him 🙂 We need two back men so if Debuchy is one of them, I am happy.. a real attacking fullback will be be helpful in the fact that it will keep opp teams wide mids and defenders back in their own halves. We miss that with Simmo, he offers very little going forward.. Santon has shown good signs and I hope keeps improving.

  15. Sick of the not “not good enough for cover” rubbish. not good enough for what? Clearly good enough for 5th place as look were we finished. agree we need a few improvements but let not slate the players that helped us get us to here.

  16. not strictly related to this thread and i am expecting lots of cynicism buuuuuuut…my mate works in a fancy suit shop in knightsbridge and yesterday this arab bloke comes in and starts talking about how his brother just bought notts forest and subsequently goes on to say that hes thinking about putting a bit in for newcastle next week, he then proceeded to spend 15 grand on belts and paid for it all in crisp fiftys. this doesnt mean that by the end of ext week newcastle will b owned by this arab fella but it is word from the horses mouth that hes thinking about it

      (Quote)

  17. Aussie at Stuart @6. sure willo can be replaced with someone better bit “no way he’s good enough cover” just completely ignores the fact he was a starter for most the season for a side that finished 5th. some credit due. would be delighted if we kept him as 4th choice cb.

      (Quote)

  18. Fair call ST – agree..

Nicky, I think the fella in question is Shiek Loadsofdosh 🙂 🙂

  19. Im still a little bit upset that simmo’s position has become untenable, sometimes it’s better the devil you know, especially in defence, Ive never know a player with so many goal line clearances in one season, plus he played with obertan in front of him for a large chunk of the season Taylor for the odd match and then ben arfa for the latter, obertan was prone to the odd mistake, and ben arfa had to be warned about mucking in with defence. Now.. My point is, say we end up with someone like hoillett who starts every match, and has a consistent performance, sitting in front of Simpson who is accustomed to our style of play and our cb’s it could be more secure than a actually getting in a higher rated player that takes time to settle, because our opening fixture list is intense, and we need the winning mentality from the word go or we might run into difficulties..

      (Quote)

  20. Rinton, There should be more to a player than goal line clearances and he has more bad points than the single good one you have picked out.
Is he any good at the following – heading, tackling, marking, passing, positioning, throw ins, crossing, scoring?
Very over rated player for me and needs replacing.

      (Quote)

  21. Rinton, a couple of my under 8’s are fairly adept at goal line clearances as well mate 🙂 agree with Robert in part, although I don’t think Simmo is that bad 🙂

      (Quote)

  22. Assuming we keep Simpson, we have RB cover in Perch and even Tavernier. At LB we have cover in Jonas and even Ferguson. Because of his lack of pace, I see Raylor as more suited to one of the central defensive mid positions. Yes, a left back would make more sense just so that we have a top lefty out there, but a top right back helps as well

      (Quote)

  23. Points taken, I am fully aware of his shortcomings too, I was just chucking an idea into the mix..

      (Quote)

  24. I actually think Santon is better at LB, than he is at RB.

Mainly because he’s such an attacking full back, he can cut in onto his favoured right foot to take a pop at goal, all the while Horse-Man Jonas tracking back to cover LB.

  25. craig at 11 when did MA say the below?

“But Ahley did say that there would be no more outlay on players, so we at least know where we stand”

      (Quote)

  26. i doubt he would say that, since like it or not season ticket sales are still important. ive renewed standard, however i had not heard hi say that.

not saying i wouldnt have but i would feel a bit like whats the point, if he cant outlay why should i??

  27. ST @ 16 – last season is over unfortunately. as fantastic as it was we cannot harp back to finishing 5th. we have to look forward.

il be happy with 7th this year as i think it will be much tougher. likes of chelsea and arsenal will not have as wank a season as they did last year. spurs will be thereabouts and so will the bindippers. add the two mancunian clubs and we have a challenge and a half to remain top 5 even if we strengthen.

      (Quote)

  28. ive heard a from a ‘supposed mate’ of owl heed that Pards is getting above his station

supposedly in his contract he is paid 100k for every position he finishes above 17th

supposedly he has asked them for that to be doubled as they will not change his basic

devenaa if true or not. still interesting

he deserves it anyway if he is asking for that, manager of year should get a payrise

      (Quote)

  29. @DIFSB
I don’t think there’s a chance in hell we’ll finish 5th. Which is why i don’t want to go overboard this transfer window. Building slowly is much preferable. The brutal truth is we will struggle to make Europe for the following season, so I would rather sign a few hot prospects to help us launch for Europe again in the future.

Unfortunately my ambitions for next season are probably a bit low. Would be happy to cement ourselves as the 7th/8th best team in the league and some great cup runs (and a trophy…). We’re basically going to have to hold out for FFP rules to come in to truley compete.

      (Quote)

  30. @ST 37 – you are very right. its weird innit how weve changed as fans now.

we finish 5th and then say we will be happy finsihing 2 or 3 places below that the season after!

    but realism has to reign.

      (Quote)

  31. ST
I believe we’ve got a good chance of wining the Europa which should secure Europe for the following year and if we do win a trophy as you say then we will have European football.

      (Quote)

  32. Solano I would fully agree with that. We wont have enough time to prepare for games whilst in the europa league and that was a big part to our success last season. Id be delighted if we finished 7th and a half decent cup run ( hoping we will win one 🙂 )

      (Quote)

  33. or not..

what if we sign a class cb and a class winger and a class fb and a class forward to compete with demba and cisse, someone like AC maybe??

    top 4?

    hmmmm

  34. I don’t think it’s beyond us to repeat our performances last season. No one thought we’d do as well last season so with expectations as low(well almost) I think we can do it.

  35. “I believe we’ve got a good chance of wining the Europa”

    If we take it seriously.

  36. I’m not sure about Santon, some say he started at RB but was moved to the left because he could pull it off and that’s just where he’s played since…but most of the time he tries to cut in with his runs, like Jonas, and that really does suit playing on the left. I’m not really sure if he can actually cross, let’s just say he makes Jonas look like Beckham

      (Quote)

  37. i dont understand why people dont get how bad jonas is. I mean its probably his work rate that keeps him in the team, but when it come to football he is absolutely shittte. He loses balance all the time, cannot pass properly, even spoils good counter attacks by running into a dead corner. The guy might be nice and has a good heart and loves newcastle, but not a football player.
