There are rumours left right and centre about Mathieu Debuchy. Nobody knows really, some say he’s staying at Lille, some say he’s going to Inter Milan and quite a few say he’ll be joining Newcastle if we can agree a fee.
From what I’ve sign from Mathieu I’ve been very impressed, he was one of the shining lights in the French team who were not so impressive at the Euro’s and has been solid for Lille in the past few seasons, but do we really need a right back?
Davide Santon was shaky at times last year but showed promise as the season drew to a close. His problem is that he’s right footed, and while he can play left back, I feel he’d be more assured at right back as his attacking runs forward would be much more dangerous if he could cross from the byline and go by his man on the outside.
The arrival of Mathieu Debuchy would almost guarantee that Davide Santon would be continuing to play on the left hand side of the defence, where he struggled at times last year. Davide should be given a chance on the right hand side if we fail to land Debuchy, but it’d also make me wonder whether we really need him.
Yes, Debuchy is a good player and he’s good to watch, but what you have to think is, do we really need him? The answer to that is probably no. Our defence would be much more balanced if we were to have natural left footer play at left back as it’d allow Jonas to cut in, with the full back overlapping.
There’s some options which we could look if we were to bring in a left back this summer, and some targets we may have already looked at.
Erik Pieters would be a player we could reignite our interest in. We spent a large amount of last summer trying to bring in the Dutch left back but failed in our attempts, which led to the signing of Santon. Erik struggled with injury last season and didn’t play as much as he would have liked but the talent is definitely there, and i’m almost sure that he will have been a “Carr choice” so we may look at him again.
Aly Cissokho is another man who the Newcastle scouts have looked at in the past, but he was too pricey at the time, which meant the deal was not viable. He would be a player who could play in the left back role and another player we’ve been long term admirers of. The 24 year old left back was once one of the most highly thought of full backs in Europe, but his form has dipped in the last year or so. Pardew could possibly get the best out of him.
It’s also rumoured that Cissokho’s agent is in England to try and find Aly a club, so this one could be a “behind the scenes deal”.
Vurnon Anita is a player who’s been linked with us this summer and he can play left back as well as the centre midfield role. Ajax have said that the player can leave for £8 million and if we were looking for a left back he could be a player we look at, as Pardew has spoken about his wish for versatile players, that’d be very useful for our long season ahead. Anita seemed keen on the prospects of Newcastle, and despite it being a long shot he could be a target for that reason.
There’s other left backs we’ve been credited interest in such as Ezekiel Fryers, Bruno Bertucci, Martin Olsson and Nicolia Boilesen, or it could be a random player out of the blue. But I just think that we don’t really need a right back.
So, would you pursue a deal for a right back? or would you look at signing a left back?
