Can we really pull off a transfer masterclass?

The unlikely transfer
As soon as news broke regarding our rather audacious bid to bring Andy Carroll back to Newcastle, I always knew that the headlines would be dominated by it for the next few days or so.

And so it is proving with numerous and plentiful headlines reporting many different bits and bobs and potential obstacles that could stand in the way of any deal ever coming off.

Sure it’s exciting, maybe even romantic, but I honestly can’t see it happening for us as there are an awful lot of potential obstacles that could scupper any deal. I’ll go into the issues in more detail below, but suffice to say that I think this transfer, whilst sensational, won’t happen for a combination of the reasons I’m about to mention.

Liverpool are unlikely to want to lose so much money on a player they paid £35m for 18 months ago, especially when you consider that the club interested in buying the player is the very same one that ripped the eyes out of the deal and bragged about it soon after. The public humiliation would be too much for Liverpool to handle in my opinion, especially if we bought him back for less than half of what was paid for him.

Then there are the dynamics of any deal and the fine print involved which would cover wages. Carroll is reportedly on somewhere in the region of £75k a week. I’ve read a lot of people saying how he’d take a pay cut and all he’s ever wanted to do is play for Newcastle, but he was doing just that and was happy enough to sign for more money at Liverpool and move away from Newcastle in the first place wasn’t he? He’s a footballer, end of.

Apparently he is interested in a move back to Newcastle and the reason this story has been made public is to put some pressure on him to force things along himself. My question is how much of a pay cut would he really be willing to take? Or how much close would the club be willing to go to his current wage? Only Andy Carroll, his agent, and the club will know that one…

I very much doubt it is going to happen, for these and more reasons. However, to borrow a cliche, football is a funny old game and anything can happen so in this mad world that is Newcastle United I’m not going to rule it out totally.

Just 95% instead…

  2. I’m really starting to think this Carroll deal is going to happen. I’m actually OK with it as he goves us something a biut different than ba and cisse. Still I think he should be thrid in the pecking order…

  5. Anyone reckon that we should offer Liverpool £14m for Carroll and Enrique? 😆 That would be funny 😈 .

To make this deal happen it would be Carrol for Demba Ba + cash.

No. I’m afraid it would be the other way around if Ba were involved. Ba>Carroll

There’s mores scratches and bumps than on Aussies **** after a night oot with Begas. 😛

You all know who you are you turncoats. 😈

If the deal falls thru he will be called a judas again. 😈

    Embarrassing 😯 😳

  8. Personally I would love to see him sit on his contract and £80k a week like an Alan Smith and why not? They came wading in with loads of money in a big panic like the old Newcastle would have. I want to see them pay for their actions for years to come. I do see Carroll signing for Newcastle again in the future but not now and not while he’s at Liverpool. We simply wouldn’t pay his wages or transfer fee and nor should we IMO.

Cause if we do need to spend 13m-17m for Andy carroll,i would rather find another striker that can play out wide at either side. 😕

  11. I want him to milk them dry like the big liverpool cash cow. Then when he gets in the Carrollmobile and drives back to Gateshead I will open a bar or be his accountant or something.

  13. Or a cheeky bid for demspy, he’d be much cheaper and I can’t really see him going to liverpool, they must have about 40 players now seriously 😯

No resale value though I guess 😐 Still, American merchandising…….come on fatty!

  14. Troy,

I still can’t believe you want him back? After the way he forced a move away from his boyhood club!

  16. For the price they are quoting for Carroll we could get, Andre Ayew, or even Sessengon, or De Jong, or Remy, or Gameiro. All of whom would fit far better into our system.

  18. Troy, well he’s on around £80k a week, around double what he was on at the toon. If you believe the papers (this actually sounds true) he doesn’t want a pay cut and only wants to fight for his place or go on loan. So either Liverpool pay a fraction of his wages or someone pays top dollar. One thing we do know is that if he does go anywhere it ain’t gonna be cheap, come on this is the most expensive English player of all time we’re talking about. 🙂

  20. @169. You’re right Dempsey won’t have resale valaue, but getting three years out of him the way he played the last 2 season would be worth 7M IMO. He would be a good fit because of his versatility….

  21. JJ-I was thinking about Gameiro, PSG will have a fair few probably going on the cheap once Ibra moves….problem is their wages I guess, and Gameiro did kind of already snub us…stupid really, he’ll just end up at some other shitty french club now like erdinc 😉

Would love to steal Sess away from the scum if possible…

We will only pay what the Toon are prepared to offer in transfers and wages.

Of course we won’t pay £80k per week and I don’t expect us to either.

If that is what Carroll is saying then he’s wasting his time considering us.

I would be amazed if he is actually saying that.

  26. Carroll handed in a transfer request to his boyhood club. Can’t get much more judas than that. Doesn’t mean people that believe he fcked us over don’t believe in redemption.

Troy attempting to get some cheap shots. From a guy that should be scouring the news in the hope that we replace Tiote and Krul after being convinced they were leaving. And of course readying himself for a season in the fizzy pop as we didn’t sign replacements last summer, Cabaye for Nolan? What were we thinking.
Surprised Troy is even able to get on the internet from his bunker, where he waits in anticipation for his apocalyptic event supposedly meant to occur weeks ago. Suppose even if he couldn’t get on we could predict his response. “woo hoo hoo” “a remark jibing the poster without bringing any sensible debate to the table”

      (Quote)

  27. Local hero my ****. He went for the money! That’s fair enough, but to then have the brass bollocks to get people to “make sure they knew that he didn’t want to leave” is a complete pisstake. They can have Carroll, they can have their seedy agents and dodgy transfer deals and anything else that is associated to the deal. They can also have any FA punishment that may, but probably won’t, head their way. Liverpool and Carroll deserve each other!

    1 yr later;

Sure it’s exciting, maybe even romantic ( talking of Carrolls return).

Toonsy, can you explain how you find the idea exciting and romantic after your vitriol attack on him one year ago. 😛

Probably less ridiculous than claiming Ashley was just going to keep us scraping by in the prem while skimming off the profits each year and then back tracking. Unless you haven’t. Which I wouldn’t put it past you.

Enrique was a traitor. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t love him to return for less than we sold him.

Good point but as I’ve always pointed out over the last two seasons that Ashley seems to have listened to the mob (the mob being the true hardcore toon supporters) and actually bought into our policy of buying quality when it’s needed ie Cisse.
Prior to that his right hand man Lambias stated those days were over.

Well done Ashley for taking notice of all my rants and putting my demands into action.

I couldn’t have done it without the passion of the mob though stood alongside me.

I agree, if Liverpool had kept Torres he’d have been perfect for Rodgers, he’s essentially a world-class Danny Graham.

      (Quote)

  41. Liam my head just doesn’t see any way it is possible.
We would have to change the entire system we play to incorporate him. Ba struggles playing as a wide forward man, Carroll would have no chance. So he would be back up, not sure he’d come on loan to sit on the bench though. And we surely won’t spend 12 mill and hefty wages on a back up striker when there are much more pressing concerns?

Still though, an apology and a couple of goals, and he would have the city rocking come the start of the season.

So I want him, but can’t see how it would happen.

How do you reckon the reception would be if he returned?

Still to be fair, Swansea were only so fucking boring because nobody had the balls to actually try a decent defense splitting pass, they preferred to hoof it back to their defence in some sort of reverse stoke manner. Apparently that’s entertainment nowadays.

Rodgers will need to adapt his style just as liverpool will to suit him.

For 13mil we could probably get Gameiro, Nathaniel Clyne and Curtis Goode.

Give me a break! What’s the point of getting yet another striker with the same attributes as the ones we’ve got? Squads need a balance and they certainly need variation – the top teams all have it.

      (Quote)

  47. Solano – cant see it either but he is a geordie and we are all a sucker for a homegrown favourite. The reception in my book would be mixed but generally positive.
We all make mistakes but i personally can see him having the same problems as he had at liverpool ie lack of service etc

We suit a quick counter attacking game whilst we develop into a better side and I cant see him in that role. However athletic bilboa play llorente as their lead man and a million midfielders around him so carroll could be that man.

It seems all a bit unrealistic no way would he start over Ba and cisse in my book

Stuart, what is the big difference between BA and Carroll… where is the big variation? Please explain..

Well Carroll is about about 6ft 4″, unbelievable in the air, good at holding the ball up and creating chances for others while Ba is more of a player who likes to get behind the defence, run at defenders and has great movement.

    Quite clear really.

      (Quote)

  52. It seems to be that Carroll would pair well with either Ba or Cisse when playing 2 strikers. I just don’t care to see Ba on the wing again when/if we play a 3-man front line
