Well, where do we start?

With all this talk of Andy Carroll it’s pretty easy to get distracted with regard to what else our team needs over the summer.

In fact this whole Carroll fiasco has made me wonder if we’re barking up the wrong tree in terms of where we should be looking to strengthen first.

Obviously we have the two young lads – Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana – already signed and initiated in the black and white stripes but I get the sense that they will be more for the future or for backup and will effectively replace the spaces once occupied by Alan Smith and Danny Guthrie. However there are a number of other positions we need to strengthen if we are to make the most of our jolly into Europe and look to try and repeat the feat over the course of the next season.

Yes we need to strengthen our attack but we also have a defence that needs bolstering, and to be honest I would prefer it if we looked at that first. Good teams are built on solid foundations and all that….

That is not to say that we have to be entirely systematic in our approach to transfers and I dare say things are being looked at that nobody knows about, but I would personally prefer it if I knew we had a new centre-back on the way along with a new right-back/left-back. Of course rumours are that Douglas and Mathieu Debuchy are being eyed to fill those roles, but as yet, nothing…

I’m fairly hopeful that it will all come together come the end of the transfer window but until then I do worry. Perhaps I shouldn’t? Perhaps I should have a bit more faith? Whatever. I just think that I’d be a little less apprehensive if we could get an actual first-team player through the door that would strengthen the squad in any number of places where we look a bit light on both numbers and quality.

The question is, where do you start?

Worrying is the last thing you should be doing. We’ve signed two excellent talents to add to the fact that Vuckic, Abeid, Tavernier and Ferguson are now another year older and wiser, with the final “internal” good news being that Steven Taylor, Sylvain Marveaux and – albeit to a lesser extent – Gabriel Obertan all appear to be back to proper, full fitness. I used to hate it under Shepherd when the old “they’re like new players” lines were trotted out, but we have to be honest here and admit that, in Taylor and Marveaux, it’s completely true!! Into this mix we throw the fact that all of our best players have now grown as a squad and I don’t think I’m alone in being supremely confident that Debuchy, Douglas and Carroll will also be back in the squad.

I’ve never been this excited about Newcastle United since KK welcomed Big Al to the club. And I still have a feeling that there’ll be another player or two to come after the three mentioned.

    CC says:

We will only have our priorities wrong if we sign Carroll and not a centre half or Debuchy.

As we are in talks with Lille, Liverpoop and have a opening bid on the table for Douglas and are “increasingly optimistic” on getting them done according to journos id say they have it spot on at the mo… ;-)

All good with the transfer plans… the problem is the media, they have taken the Carroll talk and made it bigger than Ben Hur.. So if you base what we are concentrating on right now from the articles in newsnow for example, you would swear that a striker was a priority, when it is not the case at all..

    Kev says:

Im not concerned when it’s all around press speculation, and if the right one isn’t available then we don’t want to buy second best, wait for the next window, it worked for Cisse. We have a good transfer policy now and If it ain’t broken, don’t try and fix it.

    Mark says:

You’re bang on the money here…Carroll is only a half decent move at best and that’s only in the instance we lose Ba.

He will actually unsettle the team…we don’t need players taking sides in the Taylor / Carroll school yard fistycuffs and there’s not doubt he’ll prove divisive. if allowed back

He’s no where near as good as Ba or Cisse and there’s no way we’re gonna play all three at the same time and if we start changing our tactics to suit Carroll we’ll get drawn in hoofing it up the park instead of working it down the wings like we’ve done so well at last year.

Hopefully it’s all just paper talk to distract attention away from our real targets and objectives

    trebleb says:

This is a devious plot by Ashley to divert everyone from the real issue which is keeping Demba by getting him to accept a new contract. It goes like this – we will go back for Andy Carrol or at least make an official enquiry, which Liverpool will sling back at us as derisory, but not derisory enough to not keep the door open. Liverpools pride will be such that if we know that we are sniffing then they will want to rub the noses in it. £20M for AC – yeah right not even Ashley is that daft, but if it were a player and a fee and Demba was the player? Why Demba why not Papiss? Answer cos Demba has a clause and has not signed a new contract with the Toon. So Ashley bluffs and double bluffs in the negotiations and if Demba goes Carrol arrives. If he signs a new contract Carrol goes to West Ham or maybe Toon on the last day of the transfer window as Rogers won’t keep him. He would make a good impact sub but Demba is more likely to be on the team sheet at the start. Who knows AC may learn a bit from Ba and Cisse and Liverpool about negotiating strategies – Twocing is the best they can hope for in that line

Definitely the wrong policy..As I’ve said we need a CB, RB and Left wing/forward more than an actual striker.

See we’ve missed out on Clyne then…we need to wrap some deals up asap.

    Beardoschin says:

Doesn’t matter where we start, as long as we finish with the desired result. And tbh it seems like we are trying to fill all three positions, I wouldn’t think we are chasing Carroll more than other positions its just the Carroll saga will bring more media coverage, naturally.

I’m a long time reader, rare poster, of this blog. But Toonsy, I find many of your articles to be very negative. More optimisim please! Other than that you always write a good article.

    Newkie says:

Ice-I know mate, I really rate Marv as well and actually mentioned him a couple of times in the two seasons gone when all reports were linking him to liverpool after his contract ended. Though I wanted him as a left back because of how defensive Jonas was

Problem is, we only really have him and Benny as senior wingers and from what I’ve seen both of them tend to run out of gas at about 70mins if they’ve been doing their jobs properly. Its not all bad as its a good opportunity for Sammeobi/Fergie or even Vuckic to get on the pitch and show what they can do, but that still leaves us with the problem that only those two plus Ba are senior starters. If we plan to play all our matches in 4-3-3 this season we will need a recognized senior player that can start matches or indeed change a match as a sub.

  12. 12
    kimtoon says:

Hardly surprising that the Andy Carroll situation dominates headlines ,since we sold him for shed loads and now want him back on the cheap. But I have to say it’s not stopping me worrying about are other areas we should be sorting out. If this is a clumsy attempt by the board to keep us distracted from our real and pressing issues then it’s a massive fail  I’m sure most of us will be very ,very p’d off if our defence is not sorted out soon .This is the main business they should be concentrating on first and foremost.

  13. 13
    Newkie says:

And as I suspected Spurs have kept VDV….still a big possibility of losing Modric I suppose but right now they’ve spent enough to make themselves a top class side, let alone Chelski…

Clyne to southampton then ,wonder if we should of gone in for him. :???:

    SolanosTrumpet says:

Bit annoyed to miss out on clyne. but that may be because pards rates tavernier more highly..

Do we know of simmo is anywhere near signing yet? if he does i don’t think we are in great need of a right back as we’ll have about 5 capable of playing there. so do we are”need” debuchy? i’d argue that a left back is more of a necessity.
As is centre mid. with the 4-3-3 we were playing Jonas in the middle. not ideal.

  16. 16
    wolfie says:

To be fair, I think we have our transfer policy pretty much right, although I can understand why fans worry about our defensive cover.

We have never been a club that has quite managed to fully establish a solid back line and we normally just about get there, only for injury or transfer to scupper a promising solid defence.

This time though, I really believe that we are so committed to bringing in the required quality that we will not accept also rans or over priced players who could possibly upset the apple cart.

Debuchy and Douglas have obviously had the full scrutiny of our scouts and appear to fit the bill for strengthening what we have at the club and if the price is right then I’m sure we will get them over the line.

I don’t think Pardew has his priorities back to front or anything like that…I just think he would prefer to bring in HIS targets rather than settle for the lesser contingency option if he can possibly do that.

I think we all know, it’s gonna be a season of mixing and matching, assuming we at least progress a bit through certain competitions, which will stretch what we have to the limit, which includes strikers, assuming we lose Ba and Cisse, yet it will be no different at the back…especially central defence, where we do not boast full on bonafide centre backs apart from Willo, Colo and Taylor, but we do have “in the trench” cover with the likes of Perch e.t.c, who can do a job in that position but are not actually ideal if we have aspirations of consolidation in the prem, whilst adding a potential trophy to the cabinet.

It appears that Pardew has started in the middle and is slowly spreading it out with the strikers all but sorted barring one tasty extra, which now leaves a little bit of smoothing over at the back, which should give us a fairly solid foundation for this season with some quality rotational back up for a push on for the cups hopefully.

Plus the fact that I’m not very well hung but that’s another story that I won’t go into because it has no relevance on football but if anyone really wants to know, it doesn’t even show much of a bulge ,even in tight tracksuit bottoms, which pisses me off, yet I try not to let it bother me and try to concentrate on Newcastle.

  17. 17
    Newkie says:

Solano-To be honest, I’m more comfortable with Santon, Jonas, Marv(probably too lightweight for Prem left back, but he can play there) and Perch on the left. For me Perch is actually better on the left, which I don’t really understand but there we go.

On the right I guess Jonas could still be there, but I’d never have Saylor there, not unless we bring in a truly top class central defender. Though we do have Tav, so I suppose he can do a job there.

I think Simmo and Santon are actually pretty even in what they offer overall-with simmo being a bit better defensively and santon offensively, but Santon has much more time ahead of him and should be bedded in properly soon..

    Whumpie says:

Hang on a minute! They can’t win, can they?

If they leave the persuit of any player until late in the window, they get stick for not getting going early enough. If they pursue all avenues at once, they get stick about prioritisation!

We all know that most transfer activity happens in the last couple of weeks of the window. Why on earth would you set about your targets sequentially? They know what they want, mostly who they want, and they go after all of them at once. Priority doesn’t enter into it.

How good to our recruitment guys have to get before we trust them? They have to be the best in the country, if not the world based on the past few years. Give ‘em credit!

    Sharpy17 says:

I do worry that we have our transfer policies wrong. I know we are talking with Lille, Lpool and Twente – but the reality is that we still haven’t brought any players in for the positions we are short in yet – and we are already 2 pre-season friendlies in.
The reason why I think they are wrong is because Ashley likes to do deals on his terms, bringing in good players on the cheap.
Yes Debuchy wants to come to us, but Lille won’t be rushed and won’t sell cheap, even when they find his replacement they will still play hardball – coz they don’t need to sell.
Lpool will not sell Carroll for less than £15m and we won’t pay £15m. They are one of our main competitors this season so they aren’t going to loan Carroll to us of all teams! – plus I don’t want him back.
Twente have already said they won’t sell Douglas for less than £5m – so we offer £4m???. They already have Douglas’ replacement and have money in the bank from the LDJ sale so they sell Douglas on the cheap.

It’s all well and good having top targets, but what’s the likelihood of signing them?
My big fear is that we go into the last week of the window (which I know is a way off yet) with Pardew sat in a press conf saying ‘we are still one or two players short’. We were told the targets had been identified and signed early in the window – yet 3 wks in and we aren’t close to signing and first team players – while teams around us have 2-3 plus players in already.

I’m pretty pissed off on missing out on Clyne like. He’s a 21yr old full back with bucket loads of potential that would have cost 2-3m in compo. Hes a good player who would he worth five times that in the next 2 years. Because we are busy pissing around!!!

@newkie, maybe there’s been progress in the Simpson talks which is why we are shifting some focus to attacking signings.

    SolanosTrumpet says:

Sharpy, maybe we didn’t want clyne?
I rate him and wanted us to sign him but we do have: simmo/santon/raylor/perch/tav all capable of playing there…

    NorCal Toonfan says:

Ice @ 21, did you ever read Soccernomics? The author’s talked briefly about AC Milan’s special academy and medical expertise. They said something to the affect that their medical team had all kinds of things that they looked at to determine who would pose injury risks and that so far their method has proven successful…maybe this is one of the things to look at…

  29. 29
    Sharpy17 says:

ST – Clyne = £3m and could be sold on at a profit, just as they are talking about doing with Tiote. You either keep a really good player or sell him for £7-10m and make a profit.

Also, how is it paper talk when we went to Holland and bid for LDJ and lost out, discussed Douglas and still haven’t agreed a fee. We’ve wanted Debuchy for ages and Pardew has discussed him – yet we haven’t agreed a fee, and Pardew has discussed Carroll this week as well, not from the papers – from the horses mouth mate!
We still haven’t agreed any fees, nobody in for a medical or over looking at the ground and training facilities – we are not close to signing anyone and I dont need any paper to tell me that.

    Newkie says:

Solano-Nah I agree about Simmo, thought he was a good player, maybe just not good enough for a European push. But with all the stick he gets here I’m not so sure he’ll be staying.

When Colo was stalling with his 80k around deal or whatever people were banging at the board to get it sorted, yet when Simmo wanted an upgrade on 20k or something he was a greedy c*nt…anyway, Debauchy would be an improvement regardless and right now i’d rather see any signing that improves the first team-as opposed to AC…

CB is priority though like you say.

  36. 36
    Sharpy17 says:

Wolfie – it’s also well known for failing to bring players in when needed.
This time last year we started the season without the CF we had been chasing, and were fortunate that Ba was in form and didn’t get injured. Then fortunate (IMO) to get Cisse for as little as we did in Jan.
But then in Jan, we didn’t bring in the CB that we were chasing – and again (IMO) were fortunate with players not getting injuries.

Let’s be honest here, last summer we chased a CF and failed and Jan we chased a CB and failed. Yet people want to buy into this romantic belief that Newcastle have a trick up our sleeve and will shock the world. Not for me like, I want new signings in early to gel with the squad and be part of the pre-season preparation – not signed in the last week and being eased in when the season has already started.

  37. 37

Sharpy if signing 17 goal striker for free and one of the best midfield talents in Europe for less than 5mill isn’t a trick our sleeve i don’t know what is.

  40. 40
    wolfie says:

SHARPY@36, aye I know what you’re saying but we took a gamble to be fair and sometimes , in our position, you have to take a calculated gamble and fortunately it paid off.

This time round, we are still taking a gamble on targets but I think we are more in control of the gambles now, knowing that at least we do have cover for the time being which puts us in a position to at least tough any transfer dealing out and not look as though we are playing the begging game or the desperation game, which clubs are looking out for so they can play stump up the fee games.

Ashley and Llambias are more astute than they are given credit for and so it Pardew in my opinion.

There is a saying that my Nana made up, in the 1920′s and her saying was, “all good things, including potential transfers, come to those who wait”

Well actually , my Nana didn’t make that up herself but she told me she did and me being a naive 2 year old, fell for her lies didn’t I.

ST – yes I’ve learned from the prev windows – we didn’t sign a CF last summer and didn’t get a CB in Jan!!
Ba and Cabaye were very canny signings, I agree. They were also signed fairly early on in the window – and that’s my point!! I want good players in early.
At the start of last season you can not dispute that Pardew himself was disappointed not to get his CF and again in Jan when we failed to get a CB!
re LDJ – yeah, he said he wanted MGB so why waste time going out there to speak with him?!
We could have found out that he wanted CL football over the phone, then move on rather than waste another week.
We are now doing the same with Douglas! just get the fee agreed and negotiate.

  51. 51
    Newkie says:

Solano-Exactly, seems the perfect pro as well really. I mean if you have twitter you do need to take the bad with the good, but what some “fans” were calling him is disgraceful really. And with Stevie T rumoured to be on around 50k given how often he gets injured, I can see Simmo’s argument about wanting more than half of that, considering how often he’s played..

This isn’t football manager i doubt it as easy you presume it is. they can’t agree the fee at the drop of a hat.

What do you mean we didn’t sign a cf, we signed Ba!!

    Sharpy17 says:

Ice – I understand that it takes time mate, what’s pissing me off is chasing targets who don’t want to come (LDJ) or players who would cost too much (Carroll). Then with players we could buy(Debuchy,Douglas) not getting the fee sorted. Part of the delay is us going in too low!
I get Twente moved the posts with LDJ but they haven’t with Douglas and Lille haven’t with Debuchy.
There may be benefits with playing the waiting game but the players also loose out on vilate time to bed in and be properly ready for the start of the season.

  56. 56
    SolanosTrumpet says:

@newkie i know it was really bad. huge shame really. as we would have one of the best back up rbs in the league.
i think if he was treated better by fans he would be more tempted to sign up and fight for his place. unfortunately if i were him i would leave: probably not first choice next year, having had a great season holding together hba and willo, pretty average prem wages and abused by fans. why the hell would he stay eh.

Solano-Yeah agree completely, and given how Perch and Raylor have been he probably could have covered both wings like, his hustling and pace were his main attributes so he’d be less reliant on his left/right hand side anyway you’d assume…

But yeah can’t see him staying, he’s been constantly slated and Perch now a hero must be frustrating. Maybe he should have just played shit for us on purpose when we signed him, then upped it and we’d have given him a brazilian name as well?

SHARPY aye mate know what your saying ideal to have new faces in for pre-season games, but what do you believe see ajax are saying toon have not made a bid for anita as the rags are saying we have bid for him are there more storeys like that floating aboot,a lot i think ;-)

  63. 63
    paulmag says:

also Fergie has a slight groin strain, which he picked up the day they left for the tour. Not serious thank god

  64. 64
    Dubtoon says:

Ice – overmans just said there hadn’t been bid since he took the position a couple of weeks ago. We ‘bid’ ages ago ;-)

  65. 65
    The Mildge says:

Lets just chill out and wait and see what happens,we will sign who we will sign, all this speculation about who we are going to sign is purely that,SPECULATION.The only conformation we have had from Pardew and co,is that we are looking to bring Carrol back,we have not had anything official that we are looking to sign any of the players that we are linked with,ok ,the Deubuchy thing holds a lot water, but all the rest just does not do it for me,to much shit coming from all the rags and sites that know nowt, all this does is make us come on here and say I want this player,I want that player, just because some hack somewhere says we are linked to them.Remember last year, we were linked to all sorts of players,GAMIERO, GERVINO,ERDINC,and who did we get?.So lets be patient, let them that know what they are doing do their stuff and we will all have a smile on our faces come the start of the season

  66. 66
    JJ says:

    Ice
I don’t believe we bid more than 8mil for De Jong.

I don’t think we’ve gone more than 4mil for Debuchy.

And I don’t think we have made more than a loan enquiry for Carroll.
That’s as far as we will go.

  67. 67
    Pootle says:

You’re right Sharpy. I wish they would hurry up with Debuchy and Douglas, if that’s who they’re really after.
If there’s one area you really want your players to have time to gel before the season starts, its in defense.
I think if they want to mess about getting deals done the area we can most afford to do that in is for forwards. I don’t see that as being a priority really. We could even wait until January for another forward.

  68. 68
    paulmag says:

Debuchy`s manager at Lille is saying he wants to keep him for another season, and bring some youngster on , under his wing. Also on talk sport Reading have finished their transfer buisness with the signing of Marriappa. Who i think will be another good signing for them. So the moral is we keep Simpson for the season, Spend the money on Carroll and Douglas and buy Debuchy next season when Simpsons contract runs out. Easy peasy.

  69. 69
    Big Dave says:

Toonsy I don’t think we have got our priorities wrong or hope not anyway, im sure we must be trying to get other players in, and its just that the Carroll one has flew because of the links we had with him.
But I just wish we would hurry up and get the players in to give them time to settle.
But if the stories about our bids for Debouchy and Douglas are close to the real bids well then I don’t think we have a chance of getting them for that.

JJ I think the LDG was just a piece of crap as im sure they ( Carr) would have none he had no interest in us

Newkie where did you hear that Saylor was on £50 k because I have never heard that figure being mentioned and I would be pretty sure that he wouldn’t be on anywhere near that money :?:

  70. 70
    Christer Westerberg says:

I was really bummed today when Clyne seem to Sign for Southampton. Thats a real drag along with De jong I just feel all sinked in the bay right now. The other thing is that the press build up all the transfers on another way than last summer. Then we just suddenly had the player in town signing. Now that the papers talk about all the changes it seems nothing is accurate just speculation. We need more bodies on the field for next season. Do not think that the youngsters manage the european campain. We need experienced players on those positions so that we can have our 60 games next year and hopefully a throphy. Get Debuchy, Douglas, Cissoko, Anita so that the Defence shapens up.. HWTL……

  71. 71
    Pootle says:

Debuchy has supposedly made it very clear that he wants to leave, so I would imagine the club will be happy to offload him once someone offers a reasonable fee, no matter what the manager says he wants.

  72. 72
    Big Dave says:

PAULMAG Debouchy has allready said he wasn’t interested in staying for another yr so cant see him wanting to hang around till next yr or I can’t see lille wanting to keep an unhappy player

  73. 73
    paulmag says:

Big Dave I know its all speculation. Modric wanted to leave Spuds last season, but they managed to keep him and im sure theres others, but i cannot think of any. But cheers for replying.

  74. 74
    The Mildge says:

Just posted my reply, then went on the previous post and read the comments and came across the the one and only Craig Chisholm who seems to only down on everything, what is wrong with you man,you have a negative spin on everything that comes on here.Where has it been quoted OFFICIALLY that we have bid any money for any player,NUFC do not do business in the open, have you not learnt anything yet.You reckon we have bid crap money for certain players,WHY? just because you read it on some shit site. You also say we are the only team to have been weakened, the only players to go so far are the ones that did not play last season or would not play this season, none of our top players are leaving, believe me Craig we have everything in place to move upwards,we are getting stronger, have faith bonny lad,if your not happy then go and spout your negativity somewhere else

  75. 75
    paulmag says:

the Mildge I know what you mean. Thats why i posted an earlier comment to go on the nufc website and see how happy and united the squad are. Its certainly not all doom and gloom like some people think. Reference to white water rafting. I defy anyone to look at those photos and not be cheered

  76. 76
    Sharpy17 says:

ST – by the same token, you dont know that we didn’t, you also don’t know that it’s as difficult as we seem to be making it. Other clubs are signing players and haven’t – simple. It’s got fuck all to do with paper talk or silos fucking computer games that I have never owned or played!!
This is an open forum mate and I’m not moaning, I’m voicing my concerns. My opinion does not shadow yours and that’s fine but that doesn’t make them ridiculous or moaning, particularly when others either agree or can at least see where I’m coming from.

  77. 77
    Big Dave says:

Paulmag thats one player mate that Sloppy chops probably convinced to stay, but generally if a player is not happy and made it public it normally only ends one way

The Mildge Lovens Guthrie and Best all played last year as for Smith and Forster they mightn’t have played but it doesn’t me that the squad isn’t weakened

  78. 78
    sidekick says:

    JJ@66

Well done – 3 out of 3 correct.

Also, we will not buy Debuchy to strengthen the defence, he will be played as RM.

Like I’ve said several times over the last 6 weeks , Jonas will be played as a full back this year with Pardew currently deciding whether Jonas or Santon for RB or LB . Who were the full backs against Monaco?

  79. 79
    paulmag says:

Big Dave hope your right. It would be great to see Debuchy flying down the wing in Black and White. Also hope young Fergies back soon, i really rate him

  80. 80
    Big Dave says:

Sharpy @ 76 thats one of my pet hates on here is that at times you can get people saying that we’ll be ok and we’ll get the players we need etc etc and that we need to give the club time, but they have no prove that that will happen in most cases they’re just living in hope, but I never see them being abused for their views. But some of the same people will have a go at people ( the neggers etc and all that shit ) that see it a different way from them and don’t see it all rosey

  81. 81
    Big Dave says:

Paulmag Debouchy coming in and Ba going out are the only transfers that I really believe will happen, there may be others but they’re the only 2 that i’m sure off ;-) I have nowt to base it on just gut feelings

  82. 82
    Big Dave says:

Sidekick > Jonas will be played as a full back this year with Pardew currently deciding whether Jonas or Santon for RB or LB . Who were the full backs against Monaco?

I couldnt put up with another season of Simpson going through the motions, back up centre half? On Monday he missed every ball in the air, got turned inside out and when he went to fullback, he either ran the ball out of play or passed to the opposition.
Got to be one of the worst defenders we have ever had.

    Johno Toon says:

I don’t think anyone here knows who.we are in for and how much we have bid or not bid for a player. I do think the club is moving in the right direction. The players who have left will be replaced within the squad by the young players like fergie sammy etc etc. And i think we will get 2 defenders and an attacker in. Who i haven’t got a clue but have faith they will be good players at the right price

  95. 95
    Big Dave says:

Johno the problem is that the player that left were experienced players young Sammi, Vuckic etc have no real footie experience nevermind prem ex and imo will just smoulder away in the reserves waiting to get an odd 5 to 10 mins once in a blue moon, the way that Vuckic has went for the last 4 seasons or more, he hasn’t progressed at all because he needs regular footie :?:
As for the 2 defenders and an attacker I hope they get good players in but tbh I don’t really worry about the price

  96. 96
    Johno Toon says:

Dave if they are good enough they are old enough and I have faith in pardew that he knows if they are good enough. I do care about the price. I don’t want the club to spend 35£ million on a player who is not worth it.

  97. 97
    kimtoon says:

The main issue I have is we should be signing players by now for pre season and that’s not me being a panicky pete ,it’s just common sense. How can it be right that players may come in towards the end or god forbid deadline day and amalgamate into the squad straight away ,that’s a crazy way to do things imo.

  98. 98
    Big Dave says:

Johno I don’t care about the price because I know that Jabba won’t over spend, as for being good enough they’re old enough I have no probs with that but I still think they still need experience of regular footie

Kim I agree with you oh and the lad looks well in his new top ;-)

  103. 103
    Pootle says:

Who in their right mind would want the club to spend £35m on a player who isn’t worth it though?

I would, however, like them to get on with putting a reasonable offer for Debuchy and Douglas (if they indeed are the targets identified by Pardew and the scouts) to get the players in quicker.
That will give Pardew and the coaches longer to work with them in the pre season which will help them gel with the rest of the squad enhancing our chances of a good start to the season.

Yeah. I always find it strange when people say things like “I don’t want the club to spend xxx amount of multi miliions on bad players”

I can’t imagine anyone ever sets out to buy bad players at all. I don’t believe any fan ever wants us to buy bad players.

    I mean £35m??????

All people are asking for is that we hurry up and don’t mess about hugely underbidding as the longer it takes to get the players (that Pardew and the scouts have identified, not the fans, incidentally) into the club, the less time the coaches have to integrate them before the season starts.

  112. 112
    Big Dave says:

    Ice
Pootle I know and your right even Pards said he wanted to get his players in before the Euros, but sure we just have to have faith in Jabba and co as it’s not as if he would let us down

  113. 113
    Moreno says:

Ashley probably sees it all as one big game of poker. He is always bluffing and representing a hand trying to psyche out the opponent.

The Andy Carroll thing could be a inside joke between him Pards and Derrick to mock Liverpool. I would love to have him back for the homecoming aspect but in footballing terms an dressing room dynamics it’s a wrong move and they know it I reckon.

Glad to see us active in the market yet I reckon there may be a couple of aces up the sleeve that we don’t know about

    Sharpy17 says:

Aussie – I think the point that most are trying to make – certainly the point I’m trying to make, is that if you forget all paper talk, all of the player we are supposed to be chasing, all the bids we have allegedly made.
The fact is that we still haven’t signed anyone yet!
Pardew will have known which players would leave this summer and which players he would want in and which positions he’d desperately want strengthening. He’ll have submitted his wish list before the end of the season.

Every team who will be fighting for the top 4 next season have already brought players in who will benefit from pre-season training.
We don’t have any in and don’t appear to be close to having one in, and that’s my biggest gripe.
I’m not too bothered we missed out on LDJ (although I rate him) as long as we get a CF in. I’m not too concerned Jan Vert opted for Spurs, if we were actually ever in for those players in the first place.
I believe we missed out on a CF last summer and a CB in Jan, mainly coz Pards said himself he was disappointed.
I just dont want the same scenario, let’s get the players Pardew wants in nice and early to integrate them. I don’t care who they are or how much they cost, just don’t leave it til the last minute.

  122. 122
    Aussie Magpie Fan says:

Sharpy, I see and hear what your saying mate…. but every transfer deal is different and can not be compared…We are trying to pry Debuchy from Lille, who obviously don’t want to sell him, so it is not going to be an easy deal…. We have brought in two young fella’s with relative ease but they seem to get forgotten when we talk about not signing anyone.. If a club has no problem with selling a player and the fee is agreed then a deal can be done swiftly…… but I agree, the one issue we do stumble on is paying above our valuations.. However, I really want someone to put their hand up and say they would be happy to pay way more than what they were originally prepared to pay for an item. We all have budget restraints in everyday life to a certain degree, so to say we should just simply pay more is a big call…

  123. 123
    Sharpy17 says:

Aussie – I haven’t forgot about the 2 in, but I wouldn’t say the are first teamers yet and are yet more midfielders when it’s defenders and CFs we mostly need. I understand what you are saying about some signings being difficult as Debuchy is proving to be, but I would have thought at least one would be straight forward. As I say, Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd have all managed … They have money I hear you say – fair enough, Reading, Southampton, Fulham and QPR have all added.
Also though, let’s not forget that we have a Billionaire owner, so we aren’t short of a bob or two, and Pardew has said we have the money to bring in 2-3 without selling.

  124. 124
    Big-Al. says:

Come the start of the season I`m not so worried-any injuries and we`r screwed-come January and half our squad head for the African nations-YES I`ll be worried. We have a tiny squad and have done for years now-our first team can do wonders if kept intact but the top and bottom is we need players in, the good side of our “policy is we no longer buy “the best young prospect from Seychelles” and go after quality which is great but we need cover in most positions rather than trying to make players fit. The 2 lads we`v brought in have been bigged up to hide the fact that we`v signed nobody as yet-prospects are not whwat we`ll need in the back end of the season and during the African cup. We`v got a long and exiting season to look forward to but my concern is that injuries and players other comitements will spoil it for us. Who leads the line come January-Shola? saddly I fear not and Rangers a wast of space,at times he looks good (inbetween visits to local police stations) but cant score goals-get rid!!!.. Gonna be an interesting few weeks but the fact is we need to sign players.. Bring on the new season-good times ahead? Hope so..

    Aussie Magpie Fan says:

it’s funny really…. our recent transfer successes and dealings are the envy of nearly every opposition team and their fans. the press seem to say we have done well and we have a great scouting network….to me, some focus needs to be taken off our short term trials and tribulations in the market place and more faith placed in the powers that be… I think they have done a fecking good job of it up to now… I think we will get the players we need and if not now, in January…

  128. 128
    Tommy Gibb says:

I think it is all a game of brinkmanship, with the acon if ivory coast beat Senegal we only loose tiote in January.Interesting time in our lead up to new season.Still have not made up my mind about carroll ,current talk from dippers they will only sell if price suits ,thats us out of the bidding.Think we only want him back cheap.I still think we will get the players we want ,it is just harder now because our transfer dealings are fully understood.

  129. 129
    Sharpy17 says:

Aussie – I take nothing away from any of those things. You’re right, they have worked some miracles and unearthed some real gems.
I’m not disputing that, and I’m not ‘negging’ on that at all, I’m simply quoting Pardew. He was frustrated not to get his CF last summer and equally frustrated not to get his CB in Jan. I just happen to agree with him, and would not be happy if we start this season short of the players we need. I seriously can’t see how you would be fine with waiting til Jan to bring the players we need in?!
Yes they done brilliant with transfers last summer but if we want to keep up with the likes of Spurs and Arsenal then it can’t be a one off. They have strengthened so far, we haven’t – in fact without Guthrie and Best, we are actually weaker

  130. 130
    Aussie Magpie Fan says:

Sharpy, this may go against popular opinion but I would like to see our young guys get a real go, so I am not to worried about any shortages… If this means we drop a place or two and our young guys develop well, then I see it as a positive… A bit of short term pain for some long term gain if you will…

Aussie non committal articles are the jounro and chrons favourtie; then they tell everyone they told us about it months ago! Ho hum…..

Carroll – Pards confirmed could be a board deal
Debuchy – Nothing from the club
Douglas – Nothing from the club
    Anita – Clearly agent talk

Thats the reality of the situation as we all cling on to ‘sky sources’ or some agent hoping to make a buck…..

Im still confident we will we sign completely random set of players and all we can do is second guess…

Someone mentioned gamerio/erdinc and after PSG signed ibra and lavezzi wonder what there futures look like?

IMO Allen is average at best, Same with Borini and their fans are saying we are going to drop down the league next season fuck me they are in for a shock, Am i the only one who is looking forward to them passing the ball back to the keeper every 2 minutes like swansea, Cant wait to see the reaction when they do that at anfield when they are pushing forward…

Rodgers will be the first bloke sacked next season…. he hasn’t had to deal with big personalities as yet.. poor old AVB found out what that was like last season…

I don’t know Aussie – I think everyone will be so mesmerised by their pretty little passes in and around their own 18 yard box that people will forget their only 2 points above the relegation zone.

This Carroll saga is gonna drag on and on! Think Rodgers has made it clear he is up for sale and that is gonna make anyone intrested in him drop a couple million off their asking price as they know shitpool want rid of him now. Plays into Ashleys hands nicely!
