What price for Andy Carroll?

So another day, and another twist in the protracted saga that is Andy Carroll’s future.

Will he stay at Anfield? Will he leave for pastures new, or indeed not so new? I’m personally not sure, although it seems as though Carroll is only keen on leaving, either temporarily or permanently, is a club can offer European football.

Alan Pardew attracted a lot of criticism from Liverpool fans during the week as he said pretty much what everyone know and stated that Liverpool are going to have to take a hit if they want to offload their misfiring forward. The rights and wrongs of that have been discussed already, but with Liverpool wanting somewhere in the region of £20m I’m just wondering what a realistic price would be for the most expensive Englishman of all time?

Currently Carroll is rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.co.uk which values players on current form. Whether it’s right or wrong is up for debate but I’d personally question it.

Of course it’s all a matter of opinion but I happen to think that Carroll, based on his last 18 months, is worth no more than £10m. You can call potential as much as you like, but he had that at Newcastle and has so far failed to fulfil it at Liverpool so why should it be a consideration now?

I just think there is a premium being put on the price of Andy Carroll’s head by Newcastle fans based on nothing other than the fact he is a Geordie who did well for us for two half seasons – one in the Championship and one in the Premier League. I keep saying this but would people be happy to spend £20m on Kevin Davies who has outscored Carroll in a weaker team? Though not…

End of the day it’s a pointless argument I guess. No fans have any real say as to what goes on during transfer negotiations and we aren’t privvy to information that is flying around boardrooms currently, plus it’s not actually our money which I guess makes it easier to spend.

So, purely theoretical as I don’t believe Carroll will be leaving Liverpool anyway, what value would you put on his head if you were making the decision to sign him or not?

P.S: For any Liverpool fans wondering why this has been written, ask your manager who started all of this!

20+ million pounds is a fair price. That’s what we(LFC) rates him. If you want him you should pay that considering you rate him 35 million pounds not so long ago. We aren’t messing around.

    Andymag says:

I’d say based on his performances for us, England(in the Euros) and towards the end of last season with Liverpool he’s worth just over £12m, but I think the highest we should go for him for would be £15m.

  4. 4
    Mags says:

I would think £10m is a fair price to pay for him. Forgetting the hype of £35m (£5m still owed) you have to offset this with the money received for Torres, so the net cost to Liverpool was £15m.

I cannot see how they can claim to have improved him during his time spent there. Therefore my assessment I think is fair and reasonable.

    David Hinman says:

Very difficult to value Carroll, as you say he’s only had 6 months in a top league playing well and even then he scored less goals than Demba Ba or Papiss Cisse given the same time frame. Personally I think a £10 million price tag sounds about right purely based on performance but although the Liverpool hierarchy could potentially take this blow to their pockets I’m not sure they can to their pride… #biggestflopever?

Why don’t you read what Brendan Rogers has actually said rather than out of context tit bits from scummy red top rags? I remember last season you guys were upset that Harry (deputy dawg) Redknapp came out talking about Demba Ba… but rather hypocritically none of you seem that bothered with Pardew’s comments. Well when Alan (Dave Whelan) Pardew has finished talking, maybe he can wipe his anus and jog on.

    Micky Burns says:

Well a fair price would be about 25- 28 million saying we got him for 35 million 18 month ago but I wouldnt go above 13 million because I’d rather sign Remy for about 15 million. I dont think paying more than 13 million for a player who will start on the bench depending on the fitness of Cisse, Ba & Ben Arfa is very good business. So I think leave him alone and look for another striker for 15 million. We got Cisse for 9.5 so there’s bargins to be had and Remy could fit straight in to an all 3 strike force with Ben Arfa playing slighty behind them or on the wing.

I would say first off, Carol is only worth what who ever wants him is willing to pay.

Paul, I see your living in a fantasy land there mate. You can’t base his current value against a truly over inflated sell price a year and a bit ago. Liverpool got ripped big time, sorry to say that you are dreaming if you think you can get 20m now. If West Ham are willing to offer money that is close to that mark, then more fool them. Liverpool should take the money and cut thier losses..

Paul (2) With respect, I think you should be directing the ‘we are not messing around’ comments to your new manager, after all it is he who has backed your club into a corner with his ‘loan’ comments and making it obvious Carroll was not going to fit into his scheme of things, before having to backtrack.

Also, at the time of AC transfer, I recollect it was Dalglish doing the pushing for the sale and your club had already warned Chelsea that Torres would cost £15m more than whatever fee they had to pay Newcastle for Carroll, which is the reason the transfer fee went so high.

From what I have seen subsequent to his move, Liverpool have done nothing to take Andy forward in his play.

  17. 17
    Mat says:

£35m plus clearly… that was the value you put on him and he has since been benefited from being at a proper club… transition season aside, he will come good this year and if not will be shipped out in January.

    Bill says:

Re: P.S: For any Liverpool fans wondering why this has been written, ask your manager who started all of this!

Our manager did not and I repeat did not start this. It was started by malicious reporters who twisted his statements. His problem was naivety, (something Dalglish didn’t suffer from, he just ignored them), and a trust in people who should never be trusted (the UK press). Your manager should pull his neck in and stop abusing Carroll and Rodgers, his comments are tantamount to tapping up witch carries severe penalties. And if you say he was misquoted by the press, you will only prove my point.

finally Rodgers has said (more than once) that Carroll is not for sale and he doesn’t want to leave, contrary to reports which are just more press lies and he’s not spoken to them at all.

  19. 19
    Colin says:

Is Carroll one of pardew’s players??? have I missed something?? Aussie, find the quotes of Roger’s about Carroll… direct quotes, not hearsay. Crikey, one good season and anyone would think Newcastle are a team of world beaters. You won as much as Manchester United last season you know!

Paul – We didn’t rate him £35m – LFC rated him at £35m!!. As I remember it, LFC came in at £25m then raised it to £30m before finally stumping up £35m. As the buying club, you set the price, as that is what you were willing to pay. We simply saw it as a ridiculous amount of money to turn down!!

As for what I think his current value is, personally I don’t want him back – so sweet FA for me. However, if we are still after him, his value should be relative to his performance. We paid £8-9m for Cisse who was on fire at the end of last season. I know they are different types of CF, but I wouldn’t want us spending more on Carroll than we did for Cisse.

Agreed. Personally I still can’t understand how so many people think we should snap him right up for a paltry 17 mil. 17 MIL! So many better players out there for a cheaper price, or even if they aren’t better they’d certainly be better suited to our brand of football.

Fair price for any buying club would be 10mil. For liverpool, well a fair price is as much as they can get-presumably they want at least 15, to save some embarrassment

  24. 24
    Stuart79 says:

Liverpool are currently valuing Carroll based on what they paid and as they paid way, way over the odds a buying club can not value him based on Liverpool’s scandalous purchase price. Personally I would value him at £10m with a maybe a add on here and there to take it to £12/13m.

However I really don’t see this one happening, can see us buying a striker from Europe instead.

  25. 25

And also people got riled about Redknapp’s comments because he basically made a clause in Ba’s contract (which in theory should have been kept private) public knowledge. From then on he carried that form for the rest of the season and the first half of the next one until his luck and form deserted him.

Quite simply, Liverpool massively overpaid for Andy Carroll. If we want him back, there is no reason we should pay more than his current worth just because his price was so massively inflated.

I would upset if we paid more than 11-12million pounds for Andy Carroll…

If Liverpool want more, that is their perogative, but we would be stupid to pay it. There are far better players out there in the 15mil plus bracket.

The only time Carroll looked effective at Liverpool towards the end of the year was when they hoofed it up to him. When they actually played football he looked very very poor.

He isn’t half the player Cisse is and we paid 10mil for Cisse.

    Colin says:

Aussie, Pardew answered a question asked of him about a Liverpool player. Harry Redknapp answered a question asked of him about a Newcastle player. You can try to rationalise and justify it as much as you want but it is just the same thing. As for Carroll, I think most Liverpool fans, myself included, want Carroll to stay. His form towards the end of the season and in to the Euros was good. He turned the cup final against Chelsea on his own and was unplayable, unfortunately he wasn’t given enough time on the field… which was the story of his season. He arrived injured and took time to gain his fitness and settle in but when he did, he looked great. As for value in football it is all relative. In comparison to Torres, Carroll was great value… compared to Cisse he wasn’t… but all the fees are over inflated anyway.

Mat (26) yes we try to do business in fees up front as much as possible. Ashley didn’t do his due dilligence properly when buying the club and found we were still paying for players we bought years ago when they had already left. Andy says:

A generous £7.5 million for me. He’s a talented but very limited striker who only scores a certain type of goal. He was never worth £35 million but Dalglish had his heart set on him. If Ashley had turned down the £35 mill offer there’s every chance Dalglish would have returned with £40 mill. Simply put, Liverpool wanted him at any cost, and the inflated price tag should have no bearing on any sale to Newcastle.

Bottom line is Ashley and Llambias won’t pay over the odds for him, they’ll only pay what he’s worth. If lfc fans don’t like that then he’s welcome to go to West Ham.

  51. 51
    Sharpy17 says:

Colin – I’m not sure if you saw mate, but the day after Pardew made his comments about how Lpool should deal with the Carroll situation – I’d say 90%+ on this site said he was wrong for making the comments.
The fact is that Rodgers has made a U-turn about how he feels about Carroll. Afew weeks ago he didn’t see him fitting into his team, knowing that would generate interest in the player. However that interest was from clubs wanting to loan him, so you came out and said he wouldn’t be loaned out – but like every player he has a price to be sold (hardly filling the lad with confidence). So we reportedly bid for him, and Lpool have came out saying they would accept less than £20m for him!! – hence West Hams offer of £17m.
It’s all well and good getting arsey with us, but your club have valued him at £15m less than what they paid for him. Rodgers did say that Carroll wasn’t really in his plans – I saw the bloke saying it on SSN for godsake.
You have your valuation and that is fine. This article is asking what we the fans value him at – and I promise you, there wont be a NUFC fan values him at £20m +. So he can either stay with you or bugger off to cockney land, coz we ain’t gonna be as stupid as Lpool with our cash.

Also, I’d be interested to hear a Lpool fans view on Rodgers breaking a written agreement with Swansea not to chase their players for 12mths?!

I also disagree with this assertion that Carroll only suits long-ball footie. For a start, that’s not how he tends to get his goals. For another thing, his value – much like Ba’s in the 2nd half of last season – is in other areas than scoring. At the FA Cup Final, and at the Euros he was at the centre of every attack, putting his weight about and creating space and time for his team.

I think Transfermarkt.co.uk have got it about right: £12-£15m depending on what you include.

Show me anything official from thee club saying they will accept £20m… I can show you some footage of Roger’s saying a lot of rubbish has been talked about Andy Carroll over the last few weeks.

Please could you forward me this copy of the agreement signed with Swansea saying we won’t poach their players?.. as you must have one as you are so convinced about what was written and agreed.

The bottom line is, if it transpires that NUFC sign AC for £20m you would be more than happy with rhe £15 profit and you get your darling boy back. i would feel the same about Torres. some players just fit in better at certain clubs… feel free to enlighten me on what debate I have lost… BTW my bin-dippers response was not directed at you Aussie magpie fan, more a general comment on the generic latched upon viewpoints from certain others…

Colin – Pardew was asked “what do you make of the Carroll situation?” and he answered honestly, he doesnt believe that a club will meet Lpools valuation of Carroll and if they want to draw an end to the circus that surrounds the Carroll situation, they would need to sell him for less. Personally, I’d sooner he just said, nowt to do with me, ask them!. But to suggest his response could be seen as tapping up is ridiculous mate.
However, Redknap was NOT asked, “do you know if Demba Ba has a clause in his contract?”. He spoke completely out of turn about Ba. From memory, Redknap was asked “do you regret not going for Ba?”.
Pardew was being honest, something Redknap can’t rarely be accused of being.

    Sharpy17 says:

Colin – you seem to have a blind loyalty, whereby you fail to acknowledge anything that shows LFC in a bad light in anyway shape or form. I think you are taking what’s being said alittle out of context. Nobody is saying Lpool are actively looking to sell Carroll, but every club have a value for a player and while Lpool may not have released a price list – you would be deluded if you think Lpool have not told interested parties what they expect for Carroll. Rodgers, may not have said I want to sell Carroll but he also hasn’t said I see Carroll as a major part of the squad. He has always said ‘Andy is happy here at Lpool’ he’s never fully backed him.
As for the Swansea agreement, Swansea confirmed it and Rodgers acknowledged it and justified it with the amount they are offering for the player. But if you haven’t seen that – then it obviously didn’t happen

    Colin says:

@kimtoon, I personally would be happy to fork out the £35m we paid for Andy.. even now even after the season he just had. Torres was a fantastic player who broke a number of long standing goal scoring records for Liverpool. Off the pitch he was a poster boy and great advert for the club. I’m not one of these fans who hates him because he left… He said he wanted to win stuff and to be fair he did… he didn’t slag off the club he just told the truth. unfortunately he, like Carroll, went to a club that consistently has senior managerial changes and he suffered like Andy as a result. He was the most exciting player we have had for years and I was gutted when he left. I really like Andy Carroll too and would be gutted if he left… there is something about him that makes me think it is going to come good. Michael Owen on the other hand….. I’ll just not even go there.

  123. 123
    stevep says:

Andy Carroll is worth 8 million max, but West Ham porn barons might pay more
we can forget that Liverpool paid 35 million as they rinsed Chelsea with the Torres fee anyway, if I were a liverpool fan I’d be gutted at the fact Daglish was responsible for some of the worst buys in thier history – Carroll, Adams, Downing, Henderson and to top it all bought a racist diving buck toothed cheat in Suarez (tho at least he can actually play football and was prob worth his fee :) )

Wouldnt have Carroll back personally, he’s gash and should play for Stoke

  124. 124
    Mat says:

Great question kimtoon. AC’s value is only going to go up, wheras Torres’ at 27/8 won’t have a sell on value above £50m ever again… i think a better question would be, would i return to a point before the sales and ‘yes’ I certainly would.

  125. 125
    Newkie says:

Mat-Do you honestly think Carroll’s value will go up?

Fair play, its possible he might hit 35 mil again if he has an amazing season and you lot build your squad around him, but nobody would ever rate him over 35 mil…..agree on torres though.

  126. 126
    Charlie Prince says:

    Newkie@120-

Pienaar was only ever going to go back to Everton. He was stellar there, then sat on the bench at Spurs, then played well again on loan at Everton last year. I think he’s comfortable there, and it was easy for Everton to welcome him back.

  127. 127
    kimtoon says:

Colin@6 I would refer you to the article Highlighted blue 4th down at the start of this article titled ‘ Does pardew have a right to tell Liverpool to cut their losses’ .You will see that most of us were not happy with his comments and maybe you should rethink your “but rather hypocritically none of you seem that bothered with Pardews comments” snipe.

Colin@19 “One good season and you think your world beaters” ,now you are starting to sound like a bitter Mackem . Truth is noone on here thinks that we leave that to the likes of you.By the way when was it you last won the PL exactly ? ;-)

  128. 128
    Newkie says:

Charlie-Wouldn’t have hurt to try though. We should have tried to loan him and even now we could have at least competed. Definitely worth 5mil, even if he has no sell on value.

    Plus he’s a toon fan…we’d have some pull! ;-)

  129. 129
    Andy says:

@Mat, I’d completely disagree with you there m8, Andy’s value is at least as likely to go down as it is to go back up. He doesn’t find his form soon, by this time next year there’d be no question of him being worth anything more than £5 million.

Right now you lot value him at £20 million, in my book a £20 million striker should be getting 15-20 goals a season just to hold onto that price tag. right now what’s keeping his price artificially high is memories of past form (with Newcastle ;-) ) but he can’t trade on that forever.

  130. 130
    Mat says:

COLIN… i know where you’re at with MO, you but can’t ignore what he did for us. true, he’s a mercenary and you’d nver see him alongside robbie and ian on the north american tour ha ha! i think winning the CL the season after he left kinda makes the two parties quits… as for joining MUFC, well… perhaps we should chat about this on an LFC blog ha ha!

i really rate AC, his touch is brilliant, he is commanding and can destroy any central partnership… he has to be kept cos he gives us something no other club has. A very costly sub, but one that could turn games we fail to capitalise on dominance.

Torres should be back at liverpool where he was loved, but with the ‘new’ owners, we could perhaps live up to his own ambitions… it won’t happen until we’re back in the CL and then he’ll be over 30!!! Borinni, Suarez, Ramirez… Gerrard, Allen, Lucas… Could be worse.

  131. 131
    MDS says:

Very funny thread lads…thanks for the laugh:).

I rate Carroll at 10m. I’d maybe go to 12m but have real concerns about how he’d fit into the club both on and off the pitch

  132. 132

Sorry Newkie… to clarify, the value of £15-£20m can only go up… not £35m ha ha…

    gadgified says:

the bindippers are talking as though Pards is as stupid as Dogleash, 35 mill was the joke of last season just behind henderson and downing, we dont need andy carrol and we dont need to be paying more than the 8-10 mill he’s worth.
i almost forgot about charlie (the crab) adam pmsl, lfc is deluded and living off 80′s success, when you win the league, The Premier league as were now in 2012 you can start demanding silly money for average players who helpen you win it.

    Mat says:

Lets not get back on to the bin dippers comments again ha ha! This is not an MUFC site!

  138. 138
    Colin says:

@Kimtoon I think you need to read the blog items above and below and get some context….both on what I was on about and whether or not i am a delusional scouser. We have won the premier league as many times as you guys… none… and are as close to winning it this year as you guys…. so basically not a chance. If Andy and Jose left your club as they thought they had more chance of winning things at Liverpool then that is their opinion… the fact they both won a none bridge shaped trophy is by the by. I read somewhere Andy left as he wanted to live somewhere that he could park his car and it would not get tampered with outside his mates house… but Liverpool outbid Spurs so he was screwed.

  139. 139
    kimtoon says:

On topic , I would say his value is around £12m as he’s English which always increases the price right or wrongly. Would I have him back ,yes as he offers something different . Would I pay 18 or 20m for him ,no, but it’s not my money and mike can do what ever he wishes with his money and that includes walking away from the deal. ;-)

Look can we just accept that last season Dalglish went too far trying to disprove the tight fisted Scotsman tag? He could have just pointed to Berbatov and Veron and the rest at OT but no… he went and spanked the lot to prove a point. Adam’s stats show he had more successful passes to Reina than any other Liverpool player… we could only wish he was crab quality.

  146. 146
    M. says:

5mn + add on. However, since he is English by born & therefore “Home Grown”, EPL clubs ‘ll need him to fill the 25 player quota. Technically, he is as ordinary & skill-less as Emil Heskey, but Heskey had far better work ethics & lifestyle.

I put another 7mn for his biggest asset – his passport. 12mn & add on. I think NUFC had a fair offer of 12mn for that donkey & Rogers would have definitely off loaded him, but it’s just that BR can’t take a 23mn loss for his predecessor’s stupendous stupidity.

  147. 147
    Newkie says:

Mat-Exactly…C Adam was overpriced as well but in comparison with Downing he still looks a decent buy. He just seemed a strange one as he was never going to be a first teamer.

Gadgfield-Not saying he’s a 35 mil player…just that in the circumstances when he was bought it wasn’t that ridiculous a bid as Downing IMO given that he promised so much yet Downing is still very much the same player… ;-)

I have never hidden my dislike of LFC, and that will never change. But I have a new found respect for their fans this week with all the banter on this site.
I love the way it always starts with the ‘my dads bigger than your dad’ crack them ultimately ends ‘ok, they are about the same size’ – ie you have as much chance of success this season as us.
Think the bulk of my dislike comes from the old LFC like Hansen, Lawro and Thompson.

It’s gonna be another interesting season I think

  151. 151
    geordiepat says:

He’s a £12m player. Even if he returns to the form he had (during a short indian summer spell) at nufc he forces the team have to adapt its game – which is basically aerial, despite the argument about his ‘under-appreciated’ touch, pace and movement.

I hope we spend the money on someone who will fit into our new system – not the other way around.

  152. 152
    Colin says:

@Kimtoon, not on here to be a wum… but I do think that there are some very vocal Newcastle fans getting a little carried away… but then I think that can be said for a lot of clubs including Liverpool and I do think there were plenty of fans happy to accept the Pardew/ Redknapp double standards. As for next season I personally don’t see the title going anywhere but either Manchester or Chelsea… which leaves a fight for fourth at best for a group of about 6 teams. As for delusional fans, I’d said Liverpool can’t touch Arsenal for that.

  153. 153
    kimtoon says:

Sharpy@150 I would agree with that

  154. 154
    geordiepat says:

As for Liverpool/nufc rivalry – I hope it is just that, as it always has been pretty friendly between the two clubs. Liverpool are a proper club – proper supporters and always give a good craic when we go to anfield. Last season is one they will want to put behind them, not only the money spent on disappointing transfers, but the Suarez business which was very unsavoury.

As it stands the toon are in a better position at the moment – and should benefit from the consistency coming into this season- plus probably a better first 11 if we’re being honest at the moment.

  155. 155
    kimtoon says:

Colin ,I don’t doubt some Toon fans have double standards re Pards comments but certainly not all and obviously some get carried away on the hype of last season. Me personally when the fixture list comes out I always look at the last 7 games to see how many points we can get incase we are in a relegation battle ;-) , it don’t get any less unexpectant than that . I would love a top 6 finish again or a cup to speak of as it’s been a long long time and a bridge won’t cut it sadly. much as I liked seeing us get it.

  156. 156
    Colin says:

@sharpy… you and me both…. half the problem with Liverpool’s living in the past image comes because we have a load of high profile ex players spouting cr@p on the TV. Hansen, Thompson and Lawro and their Liverpool of old comments…. I wish they would put a sock in it. I always go in to the season with new found hope though… all part and parcel of supporting your team… but looking at our fixtures for the first 8 games… I’ll be wishing for the start of the 2013/14 before this Christmas.

    Sharpy17 says:

Ice – What do reckon our average away support would be? and how many away games are we likely to play this season – as I take it this will include cup and Europa games as well?

If you say 5k travelling fans to 25 away games that would be £125k cost to the club, or an extra quid per fan. As long as the money is kept in the club, it seems fair enough to me like mate.

Newkie – this may sound stupid – but I have a horrible feeling that Chelsea or Man Utd could make a last minute snatch of Ba. Really hope I’m wrong but until that clause expires I’m nervous, despite Bas assurances

Ian Dennis BBC Sports is saying on Twitter that WHU have agreed a 2m loan fee with Liverpool with a view to 17m permanent deal should they not get relegated, if this is true, it makes further mockery of Rodgers recent statements about not allowing him to go out on loan.

  175. 175
    Sharpy17 says:

Ice – no me neither, so it’s probably easy for me to say but if the club have running cost and want to be self sufficient – that £125k could be as many as 5 people’s annual salary, for the sake of an extra quid on an away ticket.

Yeah, Man Utd are in a different galaxy when it comes to sponsorship deals.

    Newkie says:

Sharpy-Aye, that’s why we should have had a pre season in rural Nigeria or something, a good 48 hours away from any airports  :x

Don’t think Chelski would go for him with all the new blood…but Demba is definitely better than Welbeck and more suited than Hernandez and Berbatov…hopefully they’ll just go for Van Persie…. :???:

I think it’s funny how many on here run Carroll down that he’s shit and only worth this and that, but I can’t remember them saying that when he was banging them in for us, or I can’t remember many celebrating when he went to the dippers  personally if he comes back i’d be happy but if he doesn’t I won’t worry too much, but I honestly believe he is a better player than what we seen at Dippers and what I seen of him while he was with us is enough for me.

Ice did you not help form the Heed or was Richie spoofing

Kim ;-) how fickle some fans are  I honestly believe the Lad has regretted it from he signed but there was fuk all he could do about it. But I just find it funny that fans on here are saying how shit etc he is but still Alan Shearer and a few others think he is the future England No 9 and I would tend to think that they know a wee bit more about strikers than the fans on here running him down

  205. 205
    Sharpy17 says:

Newkie – sorry mate, bedtime for boyo again.
My Chelsea concern stems from there interest in Moses. If Wigan want £10m for him, they may think £7m for Ba is a better option.
If Man Utd let Berbatov go for £5m, Ba at £7m wouldn’t be a bad replacement.

  206. 206
    Newkie says:

Sharpy-True…but I just think that as Torres is bang on for centre forward he’s unlikely to want to partner anyone….will Ba want to play out on the left for Chelsea when he could do the same here? Obviously he could get better wages and titles though…but the way he played out on the left for us in the second half should have put them off…hopefully..

He’d be good for manure, but I get the feeling they want Van Persie and to bring the young uns like welbeck and hernandez through, and with Rooney essentally a guaranteed start I’m not sure they’d fancy him…

  208. 208
    Newkie says:

Save-Kinda agree with you I’ve never doubted Carroll’s aerial ability, he’s an absolute monster-and a good player if you decide to build your team around him.

I did say earlier that 35 mil wasn’t actually that bad for liverpool, I think most of us accepted it at the time for the circumstances and we were pissed off we couldn’t reinvest it. Luckily for us it’s worked out a dream so now people are getting a bit over critical of him….but still, I don’t see how anyone could rate him for over 15mil, and I can’t see how he’d ever get into our first team..

  211. 211
    kimtoon says:

Newkie ,do you not think he’d get better quality balls played to him in our set up though . People say it would mean a return to hoofball but I would dispute that . I thought his first touch at the Euros in that game was good and he just needs quality balls played into him something he never got at Liverpool . He’s also great when defending set plays as well imo.

  212. 212
    Big Dave says:

Newkie thats fair enough mate I just don’t get the he’s shit etc and he’s only worth a few mil etc etc. I agree I don’t think he is worth more than £15mil or so but I do think if he got back to his best he would be worth more, and I do believe he would be a main stay of the England team for yrs to come.
Newkie we scored 1 goal I think from corners last season and we let a brave few goals in from set pieces Carroll was a beast at that.

  213. 213
    kimtoon says:

I agree he’s not worth more than £15m but if MA wants to pay more who are we to question him ,after all it’s his money to do what he wants with. I’m not his banker ,wish I was though as would be quite rich I imagine  .

  214. 214
    Big Dave says:

Kim @ 210 100% could you imagine if fat Tugboat got 12 goals feeding of carrolls knock downs how many Cisse would score feeding of him

  215. 215
    Newkie says:

Kimtoon-With how we play currently as in 4-3-3? No imo he’d get worse service, our front three with Ba and Benny on the wings is not built for Carroll imo, even more so if Santon is on the left still because he’ll never/can’t cross either. Marveux can cross but is another who much prefers to cut inside and shoot, Jonas is Jonas and Obertan isn’t a winger either. So even with a 4-4-2, we really don’t have the wingers for him.

Add to that our dead ball delivery from either Cabaye or Raylor just isn’t as good as Bartons was imo. People slag him off all the time nowadays, but when you consider how ineffective we are as a team without him taking our corners and drifted free kicks it makes you take note…

I agree with you in that it wouldn’t neccessarily mean a return to hoofball, but I’d rather play like we do in a 4-3-3 with very little of it, and only use it as a tactic when neccessary.

  216. 216
    CC says:

Steve Wraith and cwarr are piping up  thats me away, Be back on at 1 minute past midnight wednesday morning… ;-)

  217. 217
    Big Dave says:

Kim the other thing is even if we did pay £15mil for him its basically like the Dippers paying us a £20mil loan fee for him

  218. 218
    Newkie says:

Dave- I know, the corner thing is a joke, but I wouldn’t want Carroll on the pitch purely for that kind of danger you know? And to be honest I don’t think he has better attributes, when everything is considered, than Benny, Ba or Cisse,so I don’t know where he’d play…

When you consider Staylor, Bambi, Nolan,Colo all scored from corners in a season where Barton was delivering to now well….We have good headerers in our team, just bad tactics from set pieces imo, and poor delivery.

  219. 219

  223. 223
    Newkie says:

  224. 224
    icedog says:

DAVE i must say on carroll people say he has no touch, well the way he turned our c/b at sjp was something i never saw him do while he was here, then he took the dive ;-) and he showed a couple of nice touches at the euros in the short time he was on,so maybe he is picking things up,but i cannot understand some to go from hero to zero does not wash, but 12/13mil max for me or move on

  225. 225
    Big Dave says:

Newkie im not doubting you but I think a few of them were from Carroll winning the ball and knocking it down cause I can remember a few goal box scrambles, so I was a big admirer of Joey but I don’t think it was just down to him, saying that I think Cabaye delivers a good ball but we have been lacking in good set pieces.
I have said it before I think Carroll would over more than Ba but thats just my opinion

Toonsoldier I don’t know what he said about Heskey ?? but I do know that Shola had the potential but due to injuries etc he never fulfilled that ;-)
But Shearer is not the only one that has said it and im not just basing my opinion on what they said

  226. 226
    Alex says:

    Big dave

Dont get me wrong theres no one better than carroll at what he does but i dont think we play that kind of football any more, there are just better players out there for less money who will suit us more.

  227. 227
    Newkie says:

Dave-No you’re defo right, I mean Carroll definitely had an impact on several of them, I just don’t feel that he is the factor we’re missing on with them-its something the lads need to work on seriously.

Cabaye has decent corners-but he’s often left them for Raylor or Benny to take, which makes you think he’s unsure. Well several of Benny and Raylors have gone straight out, so there’s obviously something wrong. Half the time we seemed to be putting it to the back of the box where willo was waiting, which just seemed kinda pointless.

Carroll was good…and if you take his good form then he was great, but better than Ba when Ba was on form? That lad was on fire, was the talk of Europe and people were actually saying he was the best striker since shearer, or even better than shearer. I think the second half of the season has dampened peoples views on him, but for me he is still absolute quality. He’s a faster, a better dribbler, passer, headerer and more versatile than Cisse as well imo.

  228. 228
    toonsoldier9 says:

dave @224 when heskey made his england debut alongside shearer, i think against argentina, shearer said he was going to be the main man!! lol, yeah shola’s had his injuries, but , he has never been convincing enough!!

Newkie TBH I haven’t heard anyone say he was better than Shearer IMO he isn’t and never will be ;-)

  231. 231
    Newkie says:

Dave-He’s not better than Shearer, but someone has definitely said that and it was on this blog as well, can’t remember who it was mind..he is our best striker since though, and this season will be about him vs cisse hopefully in a friendly way, and I can’t wait

  232. 232

Just saw this: Fat Sam’s West Ham have agreed a deal with LFC, subject to Big Andy’s personal terms, if I understand this correctly…

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/9439684/Liverpool-striker-Andy-Carroll-poised-for-exit-as-West-Ham-agree-2m-loan-fee-with-option-for-17m-switch.html

  233. 233

Maybe personal terms is not the way to put it–more like if Andy’ll go for it…

  234. 234
    Newkie says:

Andy should already know any details though, doesn’t he have the same agent as Nolan and Fat Sam?

  236. 236

Hmm, that’s me reacting too quickly then, probably.

  237. 237

Yeah, it seemed from the article that the ball was in Big Andy’s court and he had to decide if he’d accept it as a personal matter, but that seems to be moot if Big Dave’s correct and some sites are yanking the story.

  265. 265
    Newkie says:

Kinda need Carroll himself to come out and say what he wants, that won’t happen though because no matter who or where he says he wants to go he’ll alienate someone

  266. 266

Yeah, Newkie, he’s got himself in a real spot, but I think it’s clear what he wants in his heart of hearts, but it won’t be allowed by his minders unless their price is met.

  267. 267

I think Carroll is a good player and would welcome him back at the toon, but it wouldn’t phase me if he didn’t come back.

His true value is questionable. He was sold for a hyper-inflated amount – about 20m too much imo – and hasn’t lived up to that value, so now he has to prove his worth again. I think a loan move is the best option for us to gauge what that is.

    JJ says:

No one has ever said Carroll is a bad player. What has been said is that he simply isn’t worth anything above what we supposedly bid for him (13mil).

I still don’t believe he will come to the Toon and he is simply waiting. In the end he will probably be forced to move to West Ham on deadline day, when its made clear the Toon won’t pay over the odds for him.

It seems to be more and more clear despite Rodgers swaying back and forth that he isn’t wanted at Liverpool now.

What concerns me is that is could be damaging for us, as we are currently waiting for Lille (Debuchy), Liverpool (Carroll) and Twente (Douglas) to buckle under pressure…

If none of them budge, we could end up with nobody and not enough time to go for alternate targets. If we do the tables would have turned and the selling club’s will have the upper hand.

Its important we don’t wait and get players in soon.

Debuchy, imminent new offer from Newcastle
    10 THE SPORT | 31.07.12 | 22:00

In the next few hours, the leaders Newcastle need to submit a new offer – revised upwards – in Lille for Mathieu Debuchy. The club was alerted northerner. He expects the fax from Newcastle.

So far, the Magpies were stranded at $ 6 million, including bonuses. This time, President Michel Seydoux expects at least an offer of € 8 million strong, without bonuses.

Seydoux wants at least 8 million without bonus
If it does not get this award, the President of the LOSC could lose patience and cut to the quick by closing the door for the departure of Mathieu Debuchy, which, in turn, absolutely wants to join Newcastle. Remains to see how much the new offer from the English club.

I want debuchy as much as the next fan but as you say, most do underrate simmo. I expect him to be 15/20% better going forward/ on the ball and 5/10% worse defensively (mainly goal line clearances)

  360. 360
    Premandup says:

Looking at the stats etc. Simpson shepherds the player away from goal, whereas Debuchey dives in with the tackle. Both equally effective but Debauchery picks up more cards. Going forward however no comparison. Debauchery much better.

It still amazes me how many half wits on twatter still believe that all people have to do is bid £7m and hes away, If that was the case he have left two months back.

I remember Llambias saying it cost us £6m to sign Ba and we were getting a player on a free from a relegated club who was more famous for a quote from charva pulis than his goal ratio (good as it was for wham/hoffenheim)

What would his entourage want for signing on fees and agent fees now after last season, The chronicle probably werent far off when the said it was worth about £20m overall…

  370. 370
    NorCal Toonfan says:

Could it be that some of the moves that we want to make were waiting for August 1st to come along? Perhaps there was too much uncertainty around Ba’s future to start acquiring players. For instance, if you assume Ba is staying and you spend your wad on defense then suddenly Ba is off, you’re sort of SOL with being able to buy high quality replacement.

If Ba stays, then you don’t need to break the bank on attack and can go ahead and spend on defense as needed.

Or has all of that already been theorized and I am just late to the discussion?

Do you get what I am saying though?

    Kim
Its a massive achievement for our swimmers to get two golds. They overachieve at every Olympics.
Swimming is a sport that gets completely neglected by the ANC government because they don’t see it as a priority sport.
Nearly all our public pools are being left neglected and no money is put into developing new talent. Its all done through hard working private individuals.
All our money goes into football, cricket, basketball, athletics and believe it or not table tennis! Those are our five priority sports and strangely the five we absolutely suck in…
All the sports the government have stayed out of… golf, swimming and to a degree rugby… we have just sky rocketed in.
Just goes to show, politicians know sweet FA about sport and they should stay out of it!

Of those sports I suppose in fairness our cricketers are probably the best in the world, but they just have no BMT. Maybe they need a lesson from our swimmers and golfers. ;-)

  381. 381
    JJ says:

I can’t believe we are still being linked with a big money move for Carroll

The only way he was ever going to come here was on loan.

“Fulham, Southampton, Stoke City, West Ham and Wolves have taken the step of announcing in the last few days that they have been successful in achieving their Category One aim.

Goal.com understands that Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Middlesbrough are the four other newly accredited Category One clubs.”

Newcastle will apparently be category two!

Can you tell me how long ago it was that Man City had an academy graduate push into their first team? Or Chelsea? Also STOKE are rated above our academy?

    What a joke!

  383. 383
    Johno Toon says:

JJ I agree with u about Carroll. Think its too much money for someone who is not better than Ba or Cissie. Would rather the 15 odd million we are supposed to be bidding go on other targets to build stronger squad

  384. 384
    kimtoon says:

JJ@380 ,I think we will continue to be linked to him until he goes to W.Ham or the window shuts tbh. All we can do is try and ignore the stuff being spouted by SSN ,Talkshite and Twatter as best we can .Don’t forget all day yesterday a club’ from abroad ‘ was going to be activating Ba’s clause according to SSN. 389. 389

    Kim,
They have Nolan on 60k/week for five years and if they get Carroll at 80k/week for 8 years all they are doing is signing their administration forms.

Big Sam must be a bit thick too. I can’t see them finishing above 15th this season.

JJ, it beggers belief has noone been looking at Rangers, Portsmouth at all .

    Toon Chicken says:

Rangers and Pompey didn’t happen Kim – they were just scare stories started by Jabba to try and get the fans to buy into his austerity measures, that’s what Big Dave told me anyway.

    Cologne-toon says:

Sorry to appear thick, but what does category 1 and 2 status mean?

  393. 393
    Rodzilla says:

Cologne-toon, there are 4 categories in the ‘Elite Player Performance Plan’ (explained in more detail here):

    http://www.premierleague.com/content/premierleague/en-gb/youth/elite-player-performance-plan/

…basically, the higher up the list you are (Category 1 is highest), the larger the catchment area for NUFC to recruit young players. You earn the status via a point system based on a whole range of criteria.

  394. 394
    Rodzilla says:

    …sort of thing.

I’m sure there’ll be an article up explaining it all before long…

Entertaining headline battle ongoing between Sky Sports and BBC regarding Carroll, BBC came out first with big story that Carroll was named in Liverpools Europa League squad, almost immediately Sky bolloxed that saying he has been left behind, intriguing times!

    Premandup says:

Looking at it from Mike’s point of view. He will happily take A.C. back, the price is irrelevant, merely a measure of how much he’s mugged LFC. £10m would be good.

    kimtoon says:

Didn’t see AC going to the Hammers at all ,not so sure now as £90k a week is a hell of a lot of money and likely to turn his head.

Hi guys. Sorry for the lack of articles. Had nee internet these past two day but it should be sorted later. Hopefully!

    Rodzilla says:

Whichever way you look at it, money was the instigating factor on Carroll leaving NUFC (wages or/and transfer fee).

Whether he was pushed out or left on his own accord, I’m sure these factors won’t have changed in either the Carroll or NUFC camp. I very much doubt he’ll come back here, although I can picture him in a West Ham shirt I think he’ll still be playing for Liverpool come August 18th.

I’m sick of hearing his name, to be honest. And Debuchy’s.

…at least we’ve added to our defence and signed a centre back anyway. Not exactly what I was expecting/hoping, but I suppose it’s better than another player leaving. :???:

    andymag says:

I don’t think our lack of a category 1 status is down to our past of bringing through good players as we’re very good at that, whereas the likes of Stoke ect.. are not so good at that, the problem arises on the social issues, like rehousing and education for the young players, there are many of these sort of categories that have to be passed to obtain a certain category status, we apparently failed the majority of these. :???:

Unforgiveable Toonsy, I think you should send us each a written apology and a new Toons shirt with complimentary season ticket.
