Rumour has it that Newcastle are looking to tie up a deal for a pair of Dutch internationals from Ajax in the shape of van der Wiel and another name that has become familiar to us over the summer – Vurnon Anita. A fee of £10million has been mentioned although I personally feel it will cost us more if we want to secure the pair.
Of course we’ve heard the lines that we’ve moved onto other targets before only to see our original target turn up at St James’ Park a bit further down the line, but with time running out in the transfer window and the season fast approaching the need for reinforcements couldn’t be greater. We need a breakthrough and we need it soon.
It’s almost reached the point where I’ve been pretty much ignoring all rumours and steering clear of the web as I’m pretty much resigned to nothing happening in the transfer market, and if it does it will be a pleasant surprise. I’ve just used this latest rumour to have a bit of a whinge more than anything if truth be told.
By now we’re all aware of the transfer policy and I, for one, am not surprised that qualifying for the Europa League has signalled no change in direction from the board. Why would it? The money on offer is, realistically, hardly worth bothering with in fairness.
However there is the fact that we need to strengthen to remain competitive at the top end of the Premier League table. I don’t think we’re in as bad a state as some are making out as some of our younger players and other new signings have looked as though they could play a part for us this season, but there is still room for improvement.
As for Vurnon Anita and Gregory van der Wiel… I doubt it very much…

Well aren’t you a glass half-full Toonsy! Haha
If the rumours that Pardew has fallen out with the board then I suggest we haven’t anyone lined up.
No one knows what’s going on to be fair, whether it be transfer rumours or a boardroom split.
Believe nowt til it happens.
Im expecting a late offer to come in for one or more of our players, right near the deadline to tempt Mikey.
Can you imagine if we had £40m from revenue streams, £5m already made on players and then a fat cheque for Cheike.
I must consult my sources.
I live in Newcastle and have heard strong rumours that Pardew is close to leaving the club
Latest rumour on Liverpool site is Cabs and Ba plus £2m for Carroll if they don’t get a striker and Cabs and £10m if they do
,and they call us delusional
.
Still no signings yet then
Don’t know much about Van Der Weil but someone on a previous thread was saying he has a tendancy to hide and isn’t that good a player
Likewise Anita is an unknown quantity to me also .
Two Dutch internationals would do me. It would still leave us short a player or two but it’s the minimum I’d accept.
Alan R@4 , I really hope that’s not true or all our good work will go down the pan. This is probably the crap that Alan Brazil was sprouting last night ,which has been rubbished by Dekka via nufc twitter last night.
vegas@6 ,My main problem with them two mentioned is nither is a CB which I think is our main priority .
Need a CB ASAP – Saylors steady at best – gash at worst.
Nowt wrong with Saylor ,him and Colo best pairing in Prem 1st half of the season befor his injury ,the stats prove it and all the pundits were raving about them so he/they must of been something right,
Agree, Kim (and Stardust). A CB would be good.
Stardy that record is stuck again, why would you want a CB sure you think highly of Willo or have you changed your mind after last season ? Come on Stardy don’t be shy
As for players coming in i’ll believe it when I see it, yeah Jabba could surprise us and get a few players in , but it wont surprise me to see him gambling on trying to do it with what we have, Toonsy the Europa mightn’t be worth much in money terms but it gets us in that window, and it gets Jabba’s SD out there so I just can’t believe that he wouldn’t make the most out of it.
Kim mate… Do you not think it strange how we keep going in with really silly low bids which we know won’t be accepted. I’ve said it before and say it again, the club spent their budget in January on cisse.. Something does not seem right this summer mate and I also heard Alan Brazil, but I heard about Pardew last week…. He’s not happy mate…
Dave – Willo was decent in the Championship but as the team and standard has improved he is showing his inexperience – he makes me worry every time he has the ball.
Saylors still gash though
BIG DAVE fucks black cats
BIG DAVE is a complete and utter monkey
BIG DAVE has penguin breath
Just heard off pards (uncle) debuchy(6m) and rondon(10m) are having a medical sometime today.
News just in cabaye off to man u for 17m
More news newcastle have just brought in moussa sissoko as a replacement for 8.5m
news in the toon have sold sissoko to chelski foor 14m, what good buisness, millions made in minutes.
Big Dave, Stardy must have the same stuck record as you with Jabba not spending money
YES, craig gardner in as replace for sissoko for 2m
I’m not sure that the team is seriously under strength. If reinforcements can’t be found at the right price this window, then there’ll be later opportunities.
Toonclarke/ aka toonpig have you anything to add to the debate or are you just going to get on like a kid ? Until you get blocked again ? The choice is yours
So what’s the point of that sequence of posts, Toonclark? Is there a point or are you just a dickhead?
Pardz is a hard nut and so is Ashley. If they have an argument they are not going to go sulking off into their respective bedrooms and threaten to never come out again.. Pardz is man enough to dish out and take a verbal stoush without throwing in the towel.. nothing to worry about, if it happened at all
i am a dickhead, but i will stop if you watch this
http://youtu.be/OYa5aQb3YGE and http://youtu.be/x6BikQ3QQaM
Bris yeah he’s just a knobhead that has been banned several times. I keep giving him a chance to grow up and add to the debate but as usual he lets himsel down. But he has been warned
Aussie there is a fair few on here that have the same opinion off Jabba and there is evidence to back it up, so what are we to do ignore it
Big Dave – yes, until the window closes. If we get no players through the door then I will be joining the chorus mate.. Until then I will keep a lid on the anger and frustration levels.
what’s with all the saylor bashing like?
This is Newcastle; we’re not happy unless we are moaning about something.
Sure we could go with what we have, but only in regard to midfield and forwards.
If we dont bring in some defensive help, just a couple of injuries will leave us uncompetitive and looking at both elimination from European competition and a chance of once again achieving a spot in europe.
This would result in lost revenue and the fact Ashley would miss out on a slew of games that would give Sports Direct access to a larger European audience for his freebie advertising brand name.
Ya gotta spend money to make money and aint that what Ashleys about
(not the spending part)
I’ve lost all hope for this transfer window tbh, the targets are 2 very good ones to have and I’d love to see them both in black and white but personally I am tired now…. Qualifying for europe, finishing high in the league as well as other gains of cash we should be not playing the haggle game as much as we are, Lille were asking for 2m more euro and this was too much to ask for a world class full back with a promising future? Now that we have Anita and Van der Wiel on our target I’m expecting nothing out of it, I check everyday for all transfers since I am a big football fan in general as well as a huge newcastle fan but it’s just not looking good at all. I had high hopes for this but I should have known better it is Newcastle after all isnt it? We take the long road around EVERYTHING and if there is an easy route we will avoid that like the plague.
please take your head of the oven there Brian
Have a little faith mate, its not that bad
Aussie thats a cracker mate, so by the same token should the fans saying that Jabba will spend what is needed just keep a lid on it and say nowt until the window closes
or is it just the ones that question Jabba spending whats needed
fuk it would be very quiet on here then going by that logic
I could well believe that Pardew is as frustrated with the lack of signings as us fans. But this crack about Pardew considering leaving I just don’t buy.
That said, this is the toon so I wouldn’t be overly surprised if next week we signed Debuchy, Carroll and Douglas .., and Pardew left, coz that’s how mad our club can be at times.
Rumours again, but I’ve read that we could get VDW for around £3m as he only had a year left on contract. If that’s the case, he’d be a good purchase as I think he’s a bit of a troubled soul at the moment, like Benny was when he came, but I think Pardew could work his magic and get the best out the lad again.
As for Anita, don’t know enough about the lad but seems expensive.
I still like pieters but don’t know about his fitness, but he’d be cover for LB and CB which I think would be better for us.
All will become clear in the fullness of time though.
No Dave not at all… but if you worked or dealt with someone who was constantly negative all the time ( even with good reason) would you find them tiring to be around??. I’m not saying we should be sugar coating anything, it just takes too much energy to be feckin angry all the time.. Most of the crew on here know each others views, why is it hard for you to actually wait and see what happens before slaging Jabba off all the time??
Brian – understand the frustrations and we would obviously all love to see some new lads in the B&W shirt, particularly as we do need strengthening in certain areas (CB and FB in particular).
However – “we should be not playing the haggle game as much as we are”; yes we should, any good businessman plays the haggling game to get the best deal possible.
“Lille were asking for 2m more euro and this was too much to ask for a world class full back with a promising future” – I think the problem was that it started with asking for 2m and then when we agreed it would get higher and higher – when does one stop being taken for a mug? Bear in mind the Debuchy deal was for one fullback – Barca and the likes can afford to pay large sums for full backs but anything from £8 mil onwards for a team with our current finances is a hefty price to pay.
I would say be patient and see what comes by the end of the transfer window – remember last season we bagged one of our biggest and best signings in Cisse in January! Personally I would like to see our youth provide the ‘squad depth’ this year and be used perhaps more than last year – it is a risk but could pay off in the years to come.
Alan @13 ,well I hope your wrong ,it would be a major spanner in the works if he goes.
Just popped on to see if we signed anyone
should of known better
.Right off out again ,cya.
I would be happy with Van Der Wiel in if we can’t get Dubuchy. It may be worth waiting though. Apparently they offered him for £6m when the Debuchy bid failed. He has one season left on his contract and won’t renew. Maybe it’s worth waiting to Jan and putting them in a position where they have to accept less or lose him for nothing! Of course this is if Carr and Pardew even rate him, they seem to be after Anita.
Aussie just so that you know even if Jabba bought 3 or 4 top players I will still be on his case, maybe you can forgive and forget the way he treated our legends, fans, the singing section, put us through the SD @ SJP shite then decided to re name the ground and cover it with SD banners every where.

But I won’t because it’s not just about him bringing a few players in to buy my loyalty, and if that is tiring for you well im sorry you feel that way but I do have an avatar so it’s pretty easy to scroll past mine and not read it if it annoys you.
Do you not think I find it tiring reading some of the crap on here about how we’ll still be strong enough without new players brought in and how Jabba has saved our club etc etc, it fuking pisses me off and sometime I will question people on it but I don’t tell them to give it a rest because its tiring because everyone on here is entitiled to have their own opinion without having to conform to a certain view.
As I said it’s simple to scroll past certain bloggers post if it annoys you that much, I know I do it sometimes.
Reet back to do a bit catch you’s tonight.
I’m frustrated that we haven’t signed anyone yet, but I do believe we will sign players in this window. It may not be the 3 that we hoped for but I see at least 2 coming in.
I think we just need a signing to settle everyone down – including myself!
Big Dave, have I ever told you to give a rest mate? ? My original comment was more about the pot calling the kettle black with you and Stardy.. We have had a few debates on here in the past and all though we have disagreed, I have never told you or any one that they should ‘shut up’ in regards to having an opinion (except Troy, whom I reserve special judgement for
) So I think you are getting the wrong end of the stick here….
If I were Romain Amalfitano, or even Gael Bigirimana or Curtis Good, I would be getting a little sick of hearing “we haven’t signed anyone”.
To be honest Ive forgiven Ashley for his past mistakes on the basis that he’s made us stable both on the pitch and financially.
Wellington has it at 25. Stop bloody worrying!
Toonsy, I’d argue against your statement of, “the fact that we need to strengthen to remain competitive at the top end of the Premier League table”. I don’t think that’s a fact at all. It’s an opinion; possibly even a probability – but who’s to say we can’t do at least as well this term as last with the people we’ve already got?
I’m really not that bothered about more recruitment. I’d be happy to see some bodies in, but I think the management have thoroughly earned our trust that they’ll strengthen only if they can get the right player on the right deal. Likewise, they’ll only sell if it’s a Carroll job: so much that they can do much better with the dosh.
We’ll be fine.
There he goes again – that Wellington gadgie talking that sense stuff all over the place. Won’t last 5 minutes on here, like.
DJG – the problem I have with that and other suggestions I’ve heard about waiting on Debuchy til nearer the end of the window in a hope that Lille will buckle – is what if they dont?!
The problem with that plan is that there is nothing stopping other clubs doing the same. Clubs that can offer the players bigger wages and who are prepared to pay agent fees.
If we want the player and feel they can improve our squad – just pay the money and get them in rather than risk loosing them to other clubs.
Not fussed on Van Der Wiel…he’s worse than Simmo, maybe even Raylor
Enough with the player-bashing already! Simmo, Raylor, Saylor and Willo were part of the squad that got us back into Europe in 2 seasons from relegation! I think they deserve better than their own fans taking pot-shots at them on blogs!
Rant over. Peace out.
Just to confirm, I actually think Simmo is a good full back, and Raylor a decent squaddie who at full back is entirely reliant on Jonas for cover but otherwise decent.
If we want to progress though, I see no point in signing someone worse than both of them, despite his age and potential.
‘Raylor a decent squaddie who at full back is entirely reliant on Jonas for cover’
Every full-back in the world is reliant on cover from the wing and DM (and CB when they go forward). Enrique and Jonas were on the same wavelength as well. The point is that the team has a fluid dynamic and no-one is ever left two-on-one. During the period that Raylor and Jonas played left wing we didn’t lose 11 competetive games in a row. This is a comment that baffles me as no fullback on the planet can survive without some sort of cover, although I acknowledge that Raylor needs more, but you could argue Santon needs Jonas just as much IMO.
DJG-I know every full back has to have help from somewhere on the pitch, my point is that Raylor was far more reliant on Jonas than say Simmo was on Obertan, or for that case many other full backs in the premiership. The fact that Jonas was MOTM for a number of those first 11 games and then began to tire tells its own story surely? He couldn’t continuously do Raylor’s running for him in every match, and it would be damn right foolish to expect him to.
Santon needs him because he goes missing and his positioning is still off. Raylor needs him because he can’t keep up with a tricycle.
Whumpie bang on.
That’s why if we got a young CB & striker I would be happy with our squad. The players that got us into Europe deserve a crack of the whip. Would be dangerous without a CB/striker but Debuchy/Anita etc = a luxury.
Where are these “£40 million revenue stream” noises coming from?
Even discounting relegation we were heavily losing money each year. 5th highest wages in the league for a midtable team. So if Ashley is recouping a percentage of his loan each year then that’s fair enough. If i sunk in a loan somewhere I’d probably expect it back to.
Don’t understand the fear that players will be sold last minute. We are basing it on one scenario, that obscene amount of money for a wantaway Andy Carroll.
Today backs are expected to get forward and forwards to track back. Its a team game but in a perfect world it would work out 50/50.If a player is in constant need of help hes not good enough simple. There is a need for players to spend a lot of game time together so squad players will never be perfect but I think ours have done a sterling job.

————————————
Very true, unfortunatley…
Nutmag: got to disagree (if only for banter’s sake)
“If a player is in constant need of help hes not good enough simple.”
I’d argue, with Raylor as the perfect example, that if we get the results, it’s good enough. Without Raylor we’d have missed out on some vital goals (“Over the wall” ring any bells?) and points. I’m sure Pardeiu knews exactly what he’s doing when he plays Raylor, and everyone knows how they need to adjust to make way for his place on the field. He’s still our best taker of free kicks and throw-ins, and isn’t shy of putting in some killer crosses. If it means Jonas can’t get forward as much to have all that, so be it – against certain opposition.
Stoke, for a start.
Wow ,womens boxing ,brilliant stuff ,another gold in the bag
and one for Ireland too
.
Some good stuff in the women’s boxing. Women’s footie was looking great – till we lost to Canada.
Still – with a Toon manager; the Canucks were alwasys going to be a bit good…
Did anyone else read about how he refused to have his team play in red and white stripes at SJP, so had them play that match in black and white? Totally got the crowd behind his team. Genius.
Whumpie ,yeah saw that ,great stuff
Yeah, Canada managed to beat France with three shots on target compared to 27 or some nonesense
Supporting the canadians anyway, they play the best football (altho they were shite against france) Obviously having a geordie manager means they play the beautiful game as it should be
Damnit I missed the match
Hope Japan beat the USA tonight.
@Aussie
Big Dave is the gentleman of this blog.
Im his wing man so you owe him and me an apology . !
Anyone else think we’re just waiting for Douglas to be in Holland long enough to be a national before we take him?
AndrewT – I think that too but wonder why we can’t sign him but wait to register him until after he gets his citizenship – similar to a free transfer before their contract expiries with their current club. The only thing I can think about that is it may cause problems when he applies for it, as in the Dutch authorities may not grant it knowing it’s his intention to leave for England as soon as he has it
Andrew T@66-
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that’s what we’re doing with Douglas. He wouldn’t be my first choice CB, because his skill set seems to be the same as Saylor and Williamson, at least in style. I also think we could possibly be waiting for Pieters to be healthy enough to pass a medical, but who knows. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we had zero transfer activity before the window closes, or if we brought in 4 or 5 players and sent out 2 or 3 others. I just hope we end the summer with one more quality CB than we have right now, at the very least, and hopefully a fullback and a striker. And although some people feel that the midfield is already overcrowded, I think an Anita-type player would be nice, as well, to provide a strong defensive with Tiote plus the back four, allowing a fluid front four to attack without worry.
Interesting thoughts on Douglas. Its curious that we haven’t been strongly linked with a cab in awhile despite an obvious need
strong defensive *base*
Sharpy17@68-
It’s possible that we do have a fee agreed, and they’re just waiting to announce it. It would be nice to have him in now to settle in, but waiting a bit is better than no CB at all.
^^^ CB ^^^^
But again, even if we get Douglas, it seems like we’re leaving ourselves awfully thin if Coloccini gets hurt. A tandem of Douglas and Saylor would be dynamite against a team like Stoke or Norwich, but some of the better-passing teams would pick them apart. Ideally, it would be nice to pick up a CB who’s comfortable passing out of the back and can play either LB or RB in a pinch.
Charlie – I know nowt about citizenships to be honest so I may be wrong. But all the talk of Douglas has died down, for us and for other interested parties coz I think Fulham and another club were reportedly interested. I think Douglas will be our rushed through transfer in the last week of the window. Twente have already bought a CB to replace him in Jan so expect to loose him … fingerscrossed anyway.
On a similar note, all the Remy chat has quietened down as well?!
I remain hopeful, and like I said earlier, would be great to get someone in soon just to settle everyone down.
If we passed Ba and Marv through medicals then surely we can pass pieters through one
Honestly, at this point, I’ll be excited if we get anyone in at any position that can at least battle for a spot in the starting XI. The only be position that we absolutely NEED to fill, in my opinion, is CB, so I’ll be disappointed if we don’t have 4th PL-quality CB when the window closes.
On the Raylor debate, does anyone else think he would be a good player to put in the central defensive mid pairing?
He has vision for a pass, has SOME defensive ability, and his lack of pace isn’t as big a deal in the middle
Newkie@75-
You’d think so. I’m kind of hoping Pieters is a bit like Cisse, in the sense that we’ve had our eye on him for a while, and are just waiting for the right time.
Sharply,
Remy been left out of his sides European clash tonight… Definately seemsoon his way out.
I can see a club like QPR going for him…
JJ – do you reckon we’ve walked away from Remy like?
I think Carroll is out of our price bracket and I don’t know who else we’d go for upfront.
I’m completely lost with who’s rumour and how’s a genuine target now like
Reet whats been happening where is that Aussie one
I think Remy is out of our price bracket too.
If they are worth 15mil, we offer 11 mil… If they are worth 8mil, we offer 5.5mil…
It’s all good until the selling team doesn’t need to sell or has other interested partues
I think we were just looking at Remy in case Ba left. Him or Carroll won’t be happening now, I would think. Our priority is in defense now. The attack is awesome and enough quality to back it up
I think Remy is out of our price bracket too.
If they are worth 15mil, we offer 11 mil… If they are worth 8mil, we offer 5.5mil…
It’s all good until the selling team doesn’t need to sell or has other interested parties… Then we just don’t buy anyone.
Great financial strategy, not so great for us fans who want us to push on to the next level.
Bollocks with this who we are going to sign mullarkey. Who’s gonna replace Pardew ? Johnny Carver can hold the fort for a while…
And really, unless Senegal manages to beat Ivory Coast to get into the tournament proper, we’re not too thin up there. It would be nice to replace Best/Lovenkrands with at least a young striker with room to grow, though, especially if we’re going to play two up top sometimes.
Sharpy ,West Ham had a deal in place for Douglas but he failed to agree personal terms apparently.
As for Remy ,the dippers reckon they are in for him now.
Carroll will move in the last two days of the window that’s my feeling. It might be to us it might not.
Picking on Whumpie comments re Simpson it is about evolving the team. Ought of our first choice eleven last season he is the weakest and you must always be looking to improve IMO
I think Carroll is defo off like as they left him out tonights euro game again. God only knows where he’s gonna end up, but they need to get shot if Buck ain’t gonna play him much.
TLR I agree you should always be looking to improve, if we bring a CB in he should be as good or at least give our 1st choice a run for their money, as in all walks of life you need someone to keep you on your toes. some of our team know they can drop their performance and won’t get dropped because we don’t have strong enough back up to take their place
JJ – that’s my frustration as well, are you feeling like we won’t sign anyone this window?
Charlie – I understand what your saying, but it’s one hell of a risk to hope Senegal got knocked out and if they don’t, we have squat up front to see us over the ACoN period (IMO). Shola would be the only one with experience and he’s only good for 20 mins – 30 tops.
MM –
nah, ya miles off buddy, you missed the little laughter man off ya comment buddy, coz in the words of a tennis legend ‘you can not be serious!’
Charlie Prince-We have a young striker ready to hit the first team. Adam Campbell, he’s only 15, but he had a blinder of a season and won the same award as Tevez and some others last year, he can carry us through Jan if Senegal get through
OVER 9000 TIMES BIG DAVE HAS KISSED HIS MOTHERS NIPPLES!!!
If Senegal do go through then we pack the midfield with the quality that we do have, maybe put Shola on until his various injuries take their toll, then just play Benny up front with vuckic behind him or something….I would like to see what Benny could do against the majority of the PL’s Cbs (Slow, big bastards)
Might be entertaining?
More than likely someone would just break his leg again mind.
TOONSUPERSAIYAN / toonclarke/ toonpig you are a real fuking bore now and you were given a chance to act like a grown up but you failed.
Sharpy@91-
Don’t get me wrong, I would definitely like to see striker come in. I guess I’m not really sure what my point is, other than CB is our biggest hole, and it’s pretty much a dead heat for striker and fullback for second. I guess it’s easier to hide a fullback, though, so that would push striker ahead on the priority list.
Striker would be nice but we can rotate around it….and unless we go out and buy Berbatov or any other unrealistic player I really doubt we can improve on our front 2/3, we have some awesome strikers.
As for defence…first teamers are actually needed, at both CB and one full back position…
Newkie@92-
If Campbell is somehow ready to make an impact this year, that would be tremendous. If we do get into a bind during ACoN, I wonder if Obertan will be given a shot at striker? His pace could pose problems, and it’s not like we’d miss his crossing from the wing all that much. I think the other option is something like you said, with Vuckic and/or Benny playing up top. You would just worry about their positioning. It can be disorienting for a regular midfield player to have to play on the defense’s shoulder.
We could always put Ranger up front, as it is he’s getting money for nothing.
Aye Charlie, I was taking the piss with that post a bit, no doubt Ashley is excited by a future asset but really its too early to tell. Although by the looks of things the kid has the talent, and perhaps more importantly, he seems to have the attitude….he’s only 17 so I guess there’s a very slim chance he could get a match, we did play Airey two seasons ago after bring in Shefki so you never know.
Think Obertan as a striker, or maybe in a forward three would be interested, he’d be able to run at the goal and it would be a little bit more straightforward- maybe instictive (which would be good for him) rather than him playing out wide, beating someone, but then not being sure whether to cut in, shoot, cross, get to the byline, blah blah.
His pace and his skills might just cause enough problems and give us some free kicks/opposition cards. Cabaye and Ba aren’t a bad pairing to take our Fkicks, and Raylor obvs if he was on.
Kimtoon-Aye, we seriously need to sort out what we’re doing with that twat, excuse my french
Newkie ,I have a few suggestions but not suitable to put into print I’m afraid
.
Newkie@100-
That’s sort of what I was thinking with Obertan. He seems to be lacking in decision-making, not in athletic ability, or even skill. It’d be nice to play some combination of Marveaux, Benny and Jonas out wide in 4-4-2 formations, switching flanks depending on whether we want crosses or cut-ins. Obertan could play in a front 2 or front 3, depending on the formation. I’m not saying he’d be great, but it might be worth a look when the inevitable injuries/suspensions/international games hit.
Charlie – Obertan has pace and would be problem but last season couldn’t hit a barn door. Vukic would be my choice with Marv left of him and Benny right.
Campbell is showing great promise, as is hooper but are still a season or 2 off first team yet IMO.
I’d like to see someone like Rhodes or Konate. I know Konate is also Senegalese but I don’t imagine all 3 would be selected … at least I’d hope not like
Kim I don’t think Ranger is in Pards plans, I know what your saying about playing him because he’s picking up a good wedge, but if he is fuking about or not putting a full shift in at training, then what message would that send out if we did play him ? that would be like rewarding him for being a twat
but I could be wrong and maybe he is sorting his shit out, but I think the fact he hasn’t been seen or heard of tells its own story
Lads I see what you’s are getting at about trying Obatan out as a striker but would you’s be happy enough making do with players playing out of their natural position just because we don’t have enough players to cover
we got shot of 2 strikers this window so is it too much to ask that we get at least 1 decent striker in.
Sharpy@104-
I was thinking Rhodes had already gone somewhere, but I guess not. I don’t know whether Carr rates him, but he’s definitely the type of player we could use – young, proven in the lower leagues, wouldn’t mind sitting behind Ba and Cisse most of the time, but able to do some damage when he’s called on.
Big Dave@105-
No, it’s definitely not too much to ask, I would love for us to get another striker. I guess I’m just preparing for the worst and trying to come up with contingency plans. With Europa League this year, we should really have 4 quality strikers on the roster.
Kim – I agree, infact I’m amazed that Ranger hasn’t gone already
It’s bizarre that as good as our front 2 are we also have Ranger and Xisco clogging the squad up.
I take no importance away from CB, but I think a striker is equally as important. At best a CB could keep you a clean sheet = best result 0-0 draw. A striker could score you that all important winning goal = 3 points. At present we have 3 CBs with others who could provide temp cover. But we only have 2 players who you would think could score 10-15 plus goals a season.
So personally, a CF and CB would please my more than a FB
Sharpy ,yeah I would agree with that ,we can cope with just Simmo ,he does o.k imo, though I know he has his detractors.A striker and CB are vital for our continuing growth.
Rhodes is off to Blackburn according to the Mirror for £6m
Kim – agreed. I think between Simmo, Raylor and Tav (who has really impressed me) we have enough to cover until Jan if we have to. If we signed someone like Pieters or Yanga who could play CB but also has the ability to play FB then that would be perfect scenerio – with a CF as well of course.
In regards to Obertan, did he not play as a striker as a youngster? Or at least want to? I mean, I know most lads do want to play as a striker, but if he feels more comfortable there why not let him? There’s loads of players, Ben Arfa included, that see themselves as forwards but are forced out onto the wing, often for physicality or practicality as the teams wingers are shite.
Worth a punt anyway. As for Vuckic, what even is his position? I’m not sure he or anyone knows…
Yorkshire has more golds than Australia. Brilliant.
I remember the Aussies used to go on about New South Wales having more than British teams combined in rubbishy commonwealth games.
Owz at?!
Kim – I’d be hijacking that move as well. £4-5m plus Ranger for Rhodes would do nicely
Sharpy, thing about comparing CBs and CFs…well, a bad CB could cost you 3 goals, a bad CF? Well, I guess they might be invisible, but you could still get by with a draw. It’s purely from what perspective you look at it, and it doesn’t really matter tbh.
Plus a CB could score a goal and win you a match, Staylor style
Newkie – I know what your saying which is why I’d put them as equal need. What I meant was, and I know this is hyperthetical but £8m for Debuchy or £5-6m for Rhodes, I’d sooner we took Rhodes to be honest because I dont see anyone in our current squad scoring more than 10 goals next season other than Ba and Cisse, and that could be a huge problem where I don’t think RB would be as much
Sharpy-Thing is though, there have to be two centre backs, its almost universal across the world of football really. The only exceptions are those that play three and no full backs, not 1 centre back, and for me that makes it a priority. I know what you mean about Debuchy-right back isn’t such a big deal but centre back certainly is as we lose so much when Colo is injured.
As for Ba and Cisse, they’re both capable of scoring 20 goals, perhaps not together in one season, but if their partnership blossoms then who knows? We can also rotate it so that only one of them plays but they get all the service, and that’s where it differs from a CB. Theoretically it would be possible to do the whole season just by rotating Cisse and Ba and subbing one on for the other, unlikely obviously and there’s the Acon, and one of them would be pissed off, but it would be doable.
I also think we need to look at scoring more from all over the pitch, strikers can only do so much. Another reason why I’d like a goal scoring CB who could cover for taylor, but a more attacking full back like Deb could also help out.
Woke up this morning and still no signings, I will end up agreeing with Big Dave if this keeps up
Only one post from Troy that I can see
that lad must be seething, I don’t think I have ever seen him so pissed off
So we are seeded for europa play off.
And Anzi is unseeded.
Hopefully we dont get them. Liverpool gets them.
Saw that AOD. A few other big names too. Feyenoord, rapid Vienna, dinamo(s) as well as relatively big teams from Sweden and the likes. Maybe a rematch with partizan or ole gunnars molde. Hopefully Someone like hearts where the toon army can invade at short notice. Plenty of time for trips to the continent in the group stages
@Dub I seriously don’t think I could handle a rematch with Partizan.
Imagine how different the last decade could’ve been if we’d won that penalty shootout.
Woo hoo hoo hoo.
I love Aussie and his double cover ups. I had him hitting the roof yedderday (yes, yedderday).
Aussie, don’t take the banter so seriously fella.
I have noticed you never use any original material. You are metamorphising into Troyster.
Come on fella. Apologise to me and Dave for always calling the truth.
Oswaldo man, try the backwards fishing…..
