Who has made the best pre-season impression? Plus other random thoughts…

Marveaux ready to make an impact
So with just one game of our pre-season campaign remaining(the final game is tomorrow at Cardiff) I pose the question of who has impressed you the most.

Now I know you generally can’t read too much into things during pre-season as teams look for fitness and tend to rotate players quite often and you rarely face a full strength outfit, or a real top level one for that matter, even though we’ve faced some tough opposition over the last few weeks, but there is most definitely one person who has impressed me during pre-season.

That man is Sylvain Marveaux who now looks (*touches wood*) to have finally found some fitness after a horrid campaign last time out. Having a full pre-season behind him will help him out no end and hopefully his lengthly injury lay-off will actually prove beneficial to himself and the club in the long run. Remember, we could have had him back sooner but it was decided at the time to get him fixed properly as opposed to just patching him up again.

Dare I say it, but Marveaux could be “just like a new signing” which is handy really considering we’ve not actually signed that many players over the summer. His direct running, trickery, pace and vision can be a real asset to us and we’ve seen, albeit only briefly, that he can do it in the Premier League. I’m looking forward to seeing it more often this time round.

I must give honourable mentions to Gael Bigirimana and Romain Amalfitano who have both played well throughout pre-season, especially “Bigi” as he’s known, who looks as though he could do a job now to be honest. Also Mehdi Abeid has looked sharp during his time on the pitch.

In other news I see that Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa have been left out of the France squad by their new coach Didier Deschamps. Great news for Magpies fans! Of course naturally people have been quick to jump on the bandwagon and look for deeper reasons for their exclusion, such as deep-seated problems between Deschamps and Ben Arfa from their days at Marseille together and, apparently, an injury to Yohan Cabaye which isn’t actually an injury at all.

The fact is that it is a meaningless friendly at the start of a new season. I can guarantee there will be more high profile who either aren’t picked or end up dropping out with mysterious knocks. Move along, nothing to see here…

In more other news the draw for the Europa League is made later on today, and it has been confirmed that Newcastle are seeded for the draw. However there could yet be a sting in the tail as there are some decent teams who are unseeded, most notably the likes of Feyenoord and moneybags FC Anzhi Makhachkala. Newcastle will be hoping to avoid them in the draw for sure.

Have a great day all!

Aye it was a disgrace we were bundled out of the door before they finally got their comeuppance the season after.

Now they have the nerve to cram 606 and ssn with the begging bowl out asking for sympathy, They can **** right off not for me. They werent bothered about the running of their club when they were winning the cup or playing in euroe even though deep down they must have known they couldnt never afford players like Diarra, Muntari, Crouch, Campbell, Defoe, Distin, Kranjar and James… 😡 👿

I’m sure Prem will say otherwise. If we ask that £20m is spent on players, Prem will state that’s what fat Fred did and look where it got us.

Spend it wisely and see where it gets us. Basics.

Yep we are certainly having the last laugh now but ill never get over seeing Shearer at villa park after the whistle when them twats should have been docked points well before we’d reached that point.

  6. Ashley surely trusts Pardew and his back up staff with his cash. They have invariably got it right so far with the signings.

We made nowt on the players who run down there contracts or got fired, but that isn’t all down to Pardew…

  7. Well, without even reading the article, or comments, I’ll add my random thought…

I’ve often wondered which musical instrument would win in a one-on-one (nee blades) fight, the piano or the harpsichord. ❓

…now, as you all know I’ve always been a fan of late 18th century German Baroque music, and am also Richard Clayderman’s nephew.

This places me in a difficult situation. 😕

Nepotism aside however, and after sleepless nights of deliberation (not to mention ghostly visitations from Johann Sebastian Bach’s heavies from the other world), I’ve come to the conclusion that the harpsichord would kick **** out of any piano.

…also, I watched Alfie Tanner in 2 or 3 friendlies, and he’s looked sharp as **** from the start. Media Beard looks like this season is his kick-start into the big time, Marveaux is looking like the player I always expected him to be (let’s hope the ****** keeps injury-free!!!!!!), and young Haris seems to be getting a bit of confidence back after a fucking shitty long run of bad luck through injuries.

    …to answer the question quickly… 😆 …

    ….I’d say it’s a toss-up between Media Beard and Alfie Tanner. 😎

  8. Troy for all his faults I often feel sorry for FFS because he always backed his managers with money, but so often the managers weren’t right and wasted the money on very average and sometime dross.
But I have no doubt that he loved the club as much as most fans, and I find it strange that he gets all the stick when in most cases SJH gets away scott free as if FFS made all decisions by himsel

  11. Big D@158 you are right there in certain cases, but FFS wasn’t gambling with his own money, so it was easy for him to hoy the cash about. Agree 100% that he backed some bad managers, but he and his crony’s appointed them in the first place so that lands at his door too. Interestingly enough, where are the old toon managers now…? not too many of them still involved at a higher level ?

SJH started the ball rolling, brought KK back, redeveloped the stadium, then cutely dipped out at exactly the right time.

    Timing is everything unfortunately…

  12. ….just took a quick glimpse at the comments and spotted Dave’s……”Funny how some on here worry about Jabba spending too much of his money, when they have no reason to fear because he won’t leave himsel short”….

…..Dave, that’s exactly it mate, I’ve said it before 😆 😆 ….it’s MENTIL how much our loyal fans take into consideration the financial aspect of the modern game. I think I’m like you with regards to not giving a FUCKING HOOT about how much money the fat **** can save.

He is running NUFC for ****’s sake, an institution. It’s about Geordie Pride. It’s about realising what you’ve got and BUILDING UPON IT!

OK, yeah, I ain’t panicking yet, cos there’s plenty of time, but I will strike Fatty down with FYOOOOORIOOS ANGER (metaphorically) if he doesn’t pull his dirty paw out and spend a minimum of 8 fucking million before the season starts.

I respect the way we (at NUFC) do business, and don’t get **** on, but there comes a point where the ‘jolly barterer’ becomes a ‘fucking ****-taking pain in the ****’.

You need to push the boat out every now and again, and if it means spending a couple of million extra to bring more ammo into his guerrilla force, then surely it makes sense.

As I said, I ain’t worried really, but It’s a tad irksome we ain’t brought any **** in yet.

…and before the happy chappies mention the youngsters, yeah, they’re great – love ’em. But they WILL NOT be able to handle the pressure of playing in a depleted squad amongst their experienced counterparts when the **** hits the fan.

…and it will ‘hit the fan’ unless the fact **** takes his eyes off his shitty shops for a fucking minute. 😯 😆

    Over to you… 😎

  13. MM as I said I know he has his faults but I have always found it strange that he took all the stick while SJH took all the praise, I always remember a couple of things like He asked KK which 1 player in the world would he like and off course KK said Big Al so FFS went and got the ok to go for him. then the board decided that it was time for SBR to go so it was left to FFS to tell him and take the flack for it.
I also know he made a very good crust but im sure Jabba and SD have and will make a good crust outta us, but some of the same people will hammer FFS while they praise Jabba 😕
    Just saying 😀

  15. Rodz @ 162 I agree 100% and IMHO this was the window to push the boat out and give us a real chance of maintaining a top 6 finish and a decent run in Europe, some people on here get on as if we’re asking Jabba to spend £50-60 mil on a couple of £ 20 mil marque signings and a few others, but I haven’t heard anyone ask for crazy money to be spent, but they still go on as if we’re asking for too much. I don’t know any football fans except on here that worry that their club are spending too much 😯

      (Quote)

  16. Troy had a choice, go on holiday to a place he could afford or go to a 5 star hotel in a place he couldn’t – he chose the place he could afford – yet he criticises Ashley for building a self sustaining club? Bizarre and hypocritical!

Tbf we as NUFC supporters know what reckless spending can do to a club and now that we’re financially stable many want to keep it that way, also with the shrewd signings of the recent past many have been lulled into believing that all transfers should be bargain signings, even top class players.

      (Quote)

  24. Andy@171, I get your point mate, but I think the reason some fans get pissed off is we all realise reckless spending is fruitless for the long-term security of a club, but we ain’t expecting “recklessness” of mass proportions, we just want players signed. None of our targets are gona be big boys any more. No more “marquee Marks”.

Personally, I see our competition in the top 7 or 8 just signing players, while we always seem to be quibbling over a million or 2 for a top target.

…yeah, patience is a virtue – but it doesn’t make it any less a pain in the ****.

I think just saying ‘SPORTS DIRECT’ should strengthen my reason for frustration.

I do think Ashley should stump up the extra 1/2 mil to sign debby and get it over with, and the same for a cb presumably, but to say let’s spend 30 mil season on season without letting any players go? Christ, I don’t think even Manure average out at that, and they’re the biggest football team in the world 😯

  34. It was this saturday last year that the season started, and with talk earlier on this thread about what was and what wasn’t said in the past I decided to have a look at what was going on on here just before kick off.

Just for the record, I spent 15 years as an archivist at the Library of NSW. This sort of thing is in my blood. I don’t do it to embarrass anybody – most of you can do that all by yourselves.

On the very same date as this thread, last year, Toonsy posted an article called ‘Who has impressed you most in pre-season’ (queue X-Files music)

I’m not going to review it, but you can find it here if you’re interested (and it is interesting given the names that have cropped up this year).
    https://www.nufcblog.co.uk/2011/08/10/who-has-impressed-you-the-most-in-pre-season-4/

In general, other threads from last pre-season were dominated by our transfer activity – or the lack of a ‘name’ signing, notably a striker; the usual Ashley bitchfest; and rumblings of discontent about needing a full back. With very little imagination, you could swap curent threads and almost get away with it. The words are similar, and they are spoken by the usual suspects

It’s very instructive to revisit the past. Whenever I do I’m reminded of The Who classic ‘Won’t get fooled again’.

  40. I was thinking about the chances of our younger lads getting a good run out this season. I have seem many comments about them not being ready for the pace or physicallity of the pl. I was also watching some AFL – Aussie rules football last night and there are plenty of 19 – 20 year olds playing at the highest level. It is a very physical game and very quick and the younger guys adapt well. The same could be said for rugby.. So I find it hard to accept that a 18 -19 year old is not ready for the pl. If they are good enough play them. Time to give them a go..

Aussie on the kids we have been saying that for yrs especially the yr in the CC, we were all saying that this will be the yr for the younguns to get a chance, but its always the same they don’t get a real chance because imo the prem is to important to worry about bedding in younguns. Yeah I am one of the ones that would like to see younguns get a chance but I now realise why they don’t get much of a chance with us in the prem, thats why im all for them going out on loan for some proper regular footie.

  42. Dave it’s right there a few threads ago in “do we have more squad depth” maybe if you and troy took some time off from noshing on each others every word you could go back in read it.

We OVERACHIEVED last year. we have to adjust our expectations to the squad we actually have. sure we can hope for 4th. But realistic aims is vital.

As many people keep pointing out, the europa league isn’t exactly a golden tickets, we can’t splash the cash as we don’t get much back from it and.there’s simply too big a risk hoping for 5th place.

When did our fans become so bloody delusional. it was one season. if we’d finished 4th last year would we deem.anything less this year a.total failure?!

      (Quote)

  43. Big Dave 🙂 bloody **** stirer… hasn’t been a good olympics that’s for sure….

Loans are a good idea but it needs to be to another pl team, so they can get some real experience. Some players can flatter to deceive in the championship.. We need to have them tested at the highest level. Or give them 20 minutes here and there during games we could be considered winning comfortably 🙂 ( I hope it happens regularly 🙂 🙂 )

I also remember Pards saying in an interview thzt Europe was one of the carrots that he used to get Cabaye etc.
I personally cant see how anyone would be happy enough not finishing in the top six, yeah we’re not one of the top prem clubs but then they finish in the top 4 i’m not asking for that im only asking for top 6 and tbh I don’tthink it’s that much to ask condidering we finished in 5 th and we have had a transfer window to bring in the players we need to maintain or position or maybe even try to push on up and go for a top 4, as we wern’t that far from it last season.

Anything less is a total failure.
