Can Cisse help us off to a flyer?

Newcastle open their season against what could be described as our main rivals in in terms of league position this season in the form of Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle now have to compete with the likes of big spenders like Spurs and Liverpool if they are going to be able to replicate last season’s fifth place finish which landed the Magpies a place in Europe for the first time since the 06/07 season.

Lots of things have changed since then for United, new owners, six managers and a completely new squad and also a relegation to the Championship followed by a subsequent promotion back to the Preier League at the first time of asking.

Since Newcastle were relegated things have been looking up and last season was definitely a high point as we managed to finish above Liverpool and Chelsea and were even in the hunt for a Champions League qualifying position on the final day of the season. This shows just how much progress has been made and brings me back to my original question.

Will the Spurs match shape our season?

If Newcastle fail to beat Spurs it could just mean a bad day at the office for Newcastle or Spurs were just too good, but either way now expectations are high at Newcastle the fans may be expecting to compete with the likes of Spurs and especially in front of a home crowd Newcastle should be looking to grab all three points against Andre Villas-Boas.

A good start to the season proves to be a good thing, take a look at last year’s season when Newcastle went 11 league matches without getting beat which set the tone for the rest of the season and ultimately played a big part in us getting a place in Europe.

It feels odd asking whether one game will shape our season with so much football still to play, but getting off to a great start would be just the tonic and to do it against a team that we should be looking to compete with in terms of league position should give the lads an extra confidence boost and will perhaps shpw the rest of the league that last season wasn’t just a one off.

What do you think?

Very confident of at least a draw, watched the Cisse Vs Chelski highlights again earlier, Shola provided the assist for the wondergoal there. Another like that today please :)

I don’t think it will shape our season. Most probably a draw today, avoiding defeat is a must, and that will Pardew’s tactic too.

Good one, Connor. If we went the first 11 of this season unbeaten we’d be doing well.

The biggest concern is which Toon team turn up today, not the side who got cuffed against Cardiff hopefully …. :|

I feel we have more than enough quality in the midfield and up front to give anyone a game. Defensively, for some stupid reason, I’m not convinced. At the end of the day, we should defend throughout the whole team, and it stands to reason that the defence has a theoretically easier day when the midfield snuff everything out further up the field… come on down Anita and Tiote…

    Howay the lads … 1-1 or 2-1 toon today…

Whatever the result it won’t shape our season , although it’s always good to get a win first game of the season . Our season will be shaped by the first 10 games and what happens before the transfer window slams shut .One thing though , lets not expect the same sort of run we had in the opening 11 games of last season ,we start with 2 games against teams that will be in the mix for top 4 come the end of the campaign . Its going to be hard but as it now stands with the addition of Anita we are stronger than we were last season .

Curious to see what Andre Villas-Boas has up his sleeve tactically. Also looking forward to our big lads up front getting stuck into the Spurs central defence…

A slightly different perspective from a Spurs supporter. We have an interesting time ahead too. Newcastle sound like due to some injuries they might not be firing at all cylinders. However Spurs also have Parker out, Modric all but gone and a team in a period of transition. We haven’t seen what changes AVB has begun, we are short of firepower up front and for AVB’s tactics to work we will need to upgrade our Goalkeeper.
I think both sides supporters are secretly hoping the known weaknesses do not add up to a defeat. Whatever happens I expect the result on Feb 9th will more truly reflect how improved the teams are (or not). Hope for a good clean game and good luck to us all.

    Krul
    Simpson – Colo – Tayls – Santon
    HBA – Tiote – Anita – Guti
    Shola – Cisse

My prediction for the starting line-up, possibly Gosling on the right if HBA is unfit, looks solid enough for a draw at least :)

ColinSC welcome big man. You are onto something there, although I think Spurs are more in transition than ourselves, and that perhaps the injured or missing players may hurt you somewhat more, as I expect our “injured” players to make the starting line up.

Either way, what a splendid opening game for both clubs, a full house well pumped up, full of expectation for the new season, hopefully good weather, and a rip-roaring game at SJP, I just wish I could be there… :|

I don’t think it really shapes our season as such…I mean, we played arsenal first last year in a rather stale game, with Barton still on the field (up to his unusal antics) and nothing could have been further from what our season would end up being soo…draw would be a decent result mind

As i’ve said before he is a real down to earth guy with a lot of talent but hasn’t let it get to his head, my wee Lad would play on the Xbox with him and he sent him a couple of msg after the milk cup and Adam always takes the time to reply to him, so I would love to see him making it ;-)
