Can Papiss repeat his wonder strikes?

Game two of the new Premier League season takes place this evening as we venture to London to face Chelsea less than 48 hours after playing in the searing Athens heat.

That is of course the problem with the Europa League, but it’s a problem that will have to be managed if we are try and replicate what we achieved last season.

I’m not talking in terms of the result at Stamford Bridge, although another 2-0 win would be very welcome indeed, but I mean generally. The Europa League can take it’s toll on a squad over the course of a season, but with nine changes made for the match and a whole host of key players left out of the squad altogether I’m hopeful that, at least for now anyway, the impact of trip will be minimal on our squad.

I guess we haven’t got long to find out just how fatigued our squad is but at this early juncture of the season I wouldn’t be overly pleased to hear it as an excuse for an awful performance should one transpire at Stamford Bridge this afternoon. Hopefully that won’t be the case anyway…

Enough waffle. Team news, as ever will be published below as and when it becomes available, and if you happen to stumble upon any streams of the match then please feel free to accidentally post a link to it in the comments section below.

Let’s do this.

Howay the lads!

Chelsea: Petr Cech; Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, David Luiz, Ashley Cole; John Obi Mikel, Raul Meireles; Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Ryan Bertrand; Fernando Torres

Subs: Ross Turnbull, Michael Essien, Oriol Romeu, Frank Lampard, Ramires, Oscar, Daniel Sturridge

Newcastle: Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Davide Santon; Hatem Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye, Vurnon Anita, Jonas Gutierrez; Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse

Subs: Steve Harper, Mike Williamson, James Perch, Sylvain Marveaux, Romain Amalfitano, Gabriel Obertan, Ryan Taylor.

What is Chelsea’s Bertrand like? Will it be Mikel & Meireles vs. Anita & Cabaye in the middle?

Bertrands a left back playing on the left wing, Probably to counter HBA

  10. 10

Is it me or have Chelsea been very leaky defensively over the last several games? Hopefully, Luiz does one of his “play station” routines and leaves Ba & Cisse to destroy them…

  11. 11

Thanks, CC. So maybe HBA goes roaming in a free role?

Well, Villa looking good for the drop. Aweful side these days. Feel sorry for Our Shay mind, after thecareer he has had it would be a shame for it to end with a poor side being shat out of the Prem. On the flipside, couldn’t happen to a nicer club!

Looking forward to seeing what Anita is about, unfortunately going to niss the 2nd half – work calls. Shocking :???:

  105. 105
    Beardsleys Boots says:

    4 mins extra

  106. 106
    toonsy says:

MM @ 96 – It’s because Chelsea are playing five in midfield against our four. The one striker is irrelevant to our midfield….

How was that a high foot by Cisse?

  107. 107
    Munich Mag says:

Yalreet Toonsy…good to see you visiting mate…

  113. 113
    Munich Mag says:

Just don’t get why we’re 4-4-2 again. I don’t care if Ba doesn’t like being out on the left, he needs to deal with it.

    Beardsleys Boots says:

someone spoke too soon

  121. 121
    toonsy says:

  123. 123
    kimtoon says:

    Cabs injured

  124. 124
    Munich Mag says:

I think both of our full backs have been battered today. Santone hasn’t put a tackle in all game, left looking stupid there again for the second goal..

  125. 125
    Beardsleys Boots says:

    Cabaye fucked

  126. 126
    Big Dave says:

Toonsy it aint over tell the fat lady sings

  127. 127
    Munich Mag says:

    Toonsy@120, I thought that too mate… :???:

  128. 128
    HBA39 says:

Our only chance is to give the ball to Benny more often and in a good position. And when we play in 4-4-2 its too difficult.
And CIsse and Ba are completely out of form, Anita is lost so the score is logic

  129. 129
    kimtoon says:

Dont like 442 , need to change it.

  130. 130
    Beardsleys Boots says:

  133. 133
    CC says:

Why are we playing 4-4-2 again its far too open, Get Ba on the left

  134. 134
    DanishToon says:

we are missing Tiote so much in this game.

Sorry boys but Chelsea are a much better side and i think there is nothing positive at all.
We need signings, we need pace, and we need more options on the left side because guti cant go forward.

Hope to see something completely different for secoond half.

    HWTL

  135. 135
    DJG says:

Can’t really argue with that, baptism of fire for Anita, he has done well but hope he hasn’t been signed to fill Tiote’s boots! The sad thing id Chelsea haven’t even played well. Can tell they are back to being title challengers this season and so they should the money he has spent.

  136. 136
    Newkie says:

Every “big” team we played 4-4-2 beat us last season didn’t they? With the exception of the 4-4-2 win over Manure where we had Shola playing target man (which he can, unlike Ba/Cisse) and where Benny didn’t play on the right, wasn’t it Raylor and then Obertan? We just don’t function with Cisse and Ba in a 4-4-2 and Benny is essentially wasted. Add to that we’ve lost Tiote and our midfield is just getting destroyed :???:

  137. 137
    Keep The Faith says:

Early goal second half and we’ll turn it around. Or we’ll get gubbed 5-0.

  138. 138
    Big Dave says:

I expect Pards to change the 4-4-2 in 2nd half

  139. 139
    DJG says:

I think he’s scared 4-3-3 would leave us open but I think if we had 3 sitting back deep in midfield then it would be the opposite. I think you should start a game playing you best formation and have a go at the opposition, the Spurs game taught us that. I don’t like going somewhere to ‘keep it tight’. It just never works, and here we are half time 2-0 down.

  140. 140
    Newkie says:

Half want us to just get destroyed so Ashley realises we’re wafer thin :???:

  141. 141
    Stuart79 says:

When are the board going to realise to move to the next level we need a centre half and a right back? Jeez! We’re playing with the same defence that played in the championship!!

Pardew has every right to be fcking fuming at the way they board have handled this window. Believed their own press too much.

What happens when you have success in th transfer market an get renowned for it? Selling clubs cotton on and reliae the player they have must be decent if NUFC are in for him and up the price

  142. 142
    DanishToon says:

    keep the faith

    agree….

  143. 143
    Munich Mag says:

I can tell you the half time change now…. Raylor for Santone…

  144. 144
    Beardsleys Boots says:

Santon needs replacing with Raylor imo.
He hasn’t got 1 tackle in yet. piss poor

  145. 145
    Beardsleys Boots says:

plus we need Raylor for his set plays and long throws.

  146. 146
    Premandup says:

4-4-2 is Ok to start with but need to change to 4-2-3-1 as soon as we can see it’s not working

  147. 147
    Beardsleys Boots says:

    no changes

  148. 148
    Newkie says:

Sorry Beardsley, unfortunately Santon is a really good dribbler and can run down the flanks and therefore is a quality defender ;-)

Ah well, we’re 50/1 now on bet365 so put the mortgage on it

  149. 149
    HBA39 says:

Simpson has really a problem with some simple pass in the ground

  150. 150
    Beardsleys Boots says:

  151. 151
    M says:

  152. 152
    HBA39 says:

  155. 155

wow man, we lost the ball there and there was just a HUGE gap in our centre mid…

  156. 156
    HBA39 says:

He is really the best player in the pitch,

  157. 157
    kimtoon says:

  158. 158
    HBA39 says:

  159. 159
    HBA39 says:

  160. 160
    Munich Mag says:

Howay Pardew make the change man. Obertan on, Cisse off, HBA pushed 20 metres further forward. HBA is being stifled sitting on top of Simmo…

  161. 161
    Beardsleys Boots says:

    wtf this is awful

  162. 162
    Munich Mag says:

Sorry like, but Simmo has absolutely nothing to add going forward.

  163. 163
    Big Dave says:

A few real sloppy balls are breaking down our attacks

  164. 164

  169. 169
    Munich Mag says:

Deary me wtf is going on with cabayes corners :?:

  171. 171

  172. 172

  173. 173
    Munich Mag says:

Typical toon, stutter, stutter, pass the ball backwards, stutter stutter…

  174. 174
    kimtoon says:

442 has to go ,don’t care how much it upsets Ba. We are losing anyway so nowt to lose by changing it.

  175. 175
    Beardsleys Boots says:

yes at last Raylor coming on

  176. 176

  195. 195
    toonsy says:

Well we’ve done better in the second half. Too many players not performing. To get something at Stamford Bridge everyone needs to be on their game, and players like Jonas and Cisse most definitely aren’t!

  196. 196
    Newkie says:

Cisse’s other attributes have always been average, hence why 4-3-3 where he doesn’t need to pass much suits him so well. He is on poor form though.

  197. 197
    Beardsleys Boots says:

agree MM, considering Roaman Abram has spent more than £1Bn on players since taking over, they are really just average.

No I don’t think we’ve played as well as we can, only an idiot would suggest that. What I don’t get is by me saying “there have been positives” translates into “I think we’ve played spiffing”

    Care to explain that one?

  242. 242
    Big Dave says:

we have just been real sloppy our passing has been off, but I honestly think if we had of got a goal we would have had the left we needed .

  243. 243
    brisvegas says:

Toonsy @ 231 I’m with you, mate. It hasn’t been all bad this half. In fact I’d say we’ve been the team this half. The worst thing is that it’s been a bit slow.

well any way thats got that one out the way. Bring on the makems

  252. 252
    toonsy says:

Kimtoon – Yes they’ve strengthened, but there is also such a thing as off days. Chelsea had one when we beat them last season with the help of two goals that Cisse will probably never ever score anything like again.

Sometimes things go for you, sometimes they don’t. Tonight we had too many players off their game but it’s not the end of the world. As the commentator says, Chelsea have had over £1 billion spent on them in a decade. They are a quality team, but we still could have scored two or three goals with better finishing.

  253. 253
    Newkie says:

The decent bit was for that last attacking bit.

Kim-I think it’s a bit about the formation too. Obviously they’ve brought in some great players, I just don’t get why we stick with 4-4-2, surely 4-3-3 got better out of Jonas, Cabaye, Cisse and Benny and probably Santon, and meant we relied less on creating things “down the wings” so Simmos lack of attacking play didn’t matter so much.

Meh :???: Just hope it’s not all to keep Ba happy like.

“No good burying ya head in the sand.”

Who is doing that like? Have you not seen the three or four times where I’ve said we’ve not been great and too many players have been shit?

If you took your head out your arse and read things properly you might have seen that rather than trying to assume things your own way…

  257. 257
    DanishToon says:

i am sorry but no spark and poor poor performance..
The team is not in form at all.

    Really think something is wrong..
The players didnt fight half of what they did last season.

Pardew also seems to be frustrated and out of control
yelling at Benny “pass. “pass”! But benny just kept trippin around and hold the ball way too much.

But i have faith.. Still early days.

  258. 258
    Big Dave says:

Lads I honestly believe we just needed a goal to spark us into life but that wasn’t to be I said I would be happy with a point because I didn’t really expect much else but I am disappointed that we didn’t have the spark because imo Chelski were there for the taking. I’m not to happy that we didn’t have anyone on the bench to come on and change things, even if Campbell was on the bench I would have put him on for Cisse because it was clear he wasn’t having a good day.

  259. 259
    brisvegas says:

I still think Torres dived. There was contact, sure, but minimal, and then he threw himself down while dangling a foot out for more contact. Still, if it had happened to Ba I’d have been pissed if we didn’t get a penalty for it.

We had a few reasonably good chances, but in general I think it wasn’t as good a performance as I’d want to see. It was a fairly poor game all round.

  260. 260
    icedog says:

TOONSY you back to cause bother like

  261. 261
    3hourswasted says:

Definitely some positives from that. 2nd half we played well – thought Anita grew into the game – only his first Premier league start against European Champions. He will get better. Passing was also a lot better 2nd half – Cisse looked a bit jaded, Ben Arfa was lively and I think we will collect a lot of points once the Dembas start firing. Both could have scored in the 2nd half.
Still need another striker and CB but this lot have spent £80 million this window and will be right up there challenging for the title IMO. Disappointed we lost be we were by no means mullered. If we play like that I think we can stuff Villa next Saturday

  262. 262
    toonsy says:

Dave – Exactly. That Cisse header that he fluffed, or that chance he had in the first half, or the one that Ba smashed straight at Cech… If anyone if those went in it’s a different game.

That is my point, we weren’t at our best yet we still caused them problems.

Obviously I can’t suggest that though as I’ll then be saying we played really well or will have my head in the sand :???:

Just playing devil advocate but does anyone think that the players would get a bit of a lift if we signed a couple of decent players :?: :?:

  267. 267
    Newkie says:

Bris-he did dive but like you said there’s contact and essentially that becomes a foul. Players lose all class and respectability when they do it, but it was a pen imo :???: Staying on your feet is no reward, esp when Torres would have missed a normal shot anyway

  268. 268
    Beardsleys Boots says:

have to agree, its not good having no striker on the bench.

    mark says:

never mind, we looked good in spells, perhaps a little tired. Our forwards seemed to be off the pace a little, but chelsea just edged it with classier football.

  280. 280
    Newkie says:

Did we ever have “spark” when we were 4-4-2 though? I mean seriously? I know we won matches, but more often than not it was flicks from Bestie/Shola to feed Ba, the odd wonder goal, or scrappy stuff in an opposition box (good old own goal was our second top scorer until Cisse came along ;-) )

Just think we were so much better with that 4-3-3, our players weren’t all terrible but the majority didn’t do well, in part cause they had a bad game certainly but some are shackled by the formation…imo.

Beardo-I just don’t think 4-4-2 is tight. We’re generally always outnumbered in the middle, and if Tiote is out we’ve probably already lost it. Add in that HBA isn’t a defensive winger like Obertan was when we were winning in 4-4-2 then it just seems pointless.

Unless we kept it the same formation and dropped Ba back more, but I dunno, we just seem to have them both up top.

  288. 288
    Johno Toon says:

We came up a better team today and were beat. I thought we did ok. We were not over ran by a club we have had a billion £ invested in them over last 10 years or so. I agree 100% with Troy’s view on the game.

    Cabaye looking really jaded.

Anita looked shell shocked – though Torres’ dive into the foul was dirt.

Jonas couldn’t push their line back as he usually does.

Cisse and Ba were very poor at passing and holding up the ball – hopefully we will see more from them against Villa.

Ryan Taylor and Marveaux did nothing when they came on.

Perch looked like the best player in a Toon shirt when he came on.

That said Chelsea were tough to break down, they took their chances and we squandered two or three great chances.

  297. 297
    Big Dave says:

Prem @ 289 sorry but I don’t think Chelski played that well so I don’t really see the point :?: it would be different if they completely out classed us but they didn’t so on the day they didn’t look like a team that will challenge for the top, and IMHO were there for the taking if we had that cutting edge .

Dave my point was the opposite. We did Ok against them. They showed enough to show they are a much better outfit than last year. Game changer my arse, we were well beat today by a Chelski side not even at 80%. They could have stepped it up another gear but didn’t have to in the second half. Unfortunately for us, Di Matteo, no Drogba, the alignment of Pluto with the sun; for whatever reason Torres is playing again and he destroyed us in the first half. Anita is still green behind the ears in this league.

HBA the difference with Cisse is that we don’t have another striker to take his place ;-) to play in Pards preferred away line up of 4-4-2.

I don’t feel that bad because I didn’t expect to win but I do think that if we had off upped our game we could have got something out of the game, and I do think a goal would have gave us that lift and spark we needed ;-) and yeah they have spent well Hazard looks like a star.

    @BD

I know we will get the piss taken for agreeing with each other but we have to speak the truth how we see things!

I have been jumped on for criticising Cabaye since he arrived. At this point, for anyone who doesn’t know my views on him, I want to clarify he’s a neat tidy player and has the ability to pick out a scintillating pass or two. However, my point has always been that so do most midfielders in the top teams in the premier. But he doesn’t do it often enough and he sits to deep when we already have a cracking defensive midfielder in Tiote.
Now Anita steps in and is clearly a defensive midfielder.

Nothing changed today for Cabaye. He sat deep and did nowt.

Before I get jumped on I want to emphasise I like him but don’t get carried away with the hype that some on here give him.

As I’ve pointed out on many occasions he looks far better when he gets forward. Far more dangerous and capable of scoring.

As for Anita, well he looked out of his depth but as always I will judge him in time. Not now.

As for Chelsea. I wasn’t impressed . They never looked that impressive to me. I’m talking in terms of winning the premier league here.

Finally, @DJG I used to go out with a Kimberly Clark!
It didnt work out and I flushed her down the toilet!

Kimberley if you are out there, are you now living at Prudhoe like the lads are saying?

Newkie@252 , spot on that 442 ain’t working ,for what ever reason ,last week we were far better once we changed ,but Pards obviously had a reason for not switching and I still trust in him. ;-)

  327. 327
    Premandup says:

Doubt it Newbie. More likely 4-4-2 gives 2 banks of 4 when defending and 2 strikers up front. Great if we are Ok in the midfield. When out numbered we need Ba and Jonas to drop back to make 4-2-3-1. ATM We seem to be waiting till half time for AP to autherise the change. We need to be more flexible.

Right, just listened to Pards post match interview and when asked if Carroll was coming back he said ” no I don’t think so ,we are looking at maybe a younger player to come in ” he wouldn’t be drawn on what position it might be and not even sure if anyone would be in for defo. The link is up on newsnow if you want to hear it lads. 333. 333
    kimtoon says:

Newkie @325 ,yeah I keep thinking back to that quote of Pards where he said Ba will be up front 90% of the time. actually at the moment he looks more sharp than Papiss does.Didn’t Ba get a slow start then start flying last year ,maybe that’s gonna happen with Cisse. :???:

  334. 334
    Newkie says:

Premandup-But for me, 4-3-3 (or 4-5-1 as it could be interpreted) is precisely that-more flexible. Just seems to suit the attributes of most of our players better. That being said, perhaps Pards didn’t want to leave Anita alongside Jonas in their usual defensive roles and wanted him alongside Cabaye, a bit more conventional? Just seems that Jonas is a much better defender and could especially track the runs of Mata/Hazard whilst Cabaye could actually supply our forwards, instead of both of them failing to do the opposite.

I would love to see Cazza back at the Toon for the right price but if they have another lined up then so be it.

If we don’t get Cazza I’m sure he will then be referred to as Judas by many again. ;-)

  337. 337
    Newkie says:

Kim-Aye he does look sharper. Thing is, Cisse doesn’t really ever look a *sharp player* he’s never looked as comfortable on the ball as Ba has (when they were both on their best forms) he just either takes his chances or he doesn’t.

Hopefully its the same for both though…

  338. 338
    Premandup says:

Not disagreeing Newbie. For me it’s tactics not promises. Agree two defensive midfield with Cabaye in front is where we play our best.

  339. 339
    Axel says:

Well if that performance does not kick Ashley into action and get him too sign at least 1 quick strong CB then we are fooked . Colo for the first game since we came back up struggled and our defence was never in control , have too say they were not helped by either the midfield in front of them or a piss poor ref . Still it was chelsea on their home patch ,you know the team that conquered Europe last season beating the might of Barca on the way to the final . Upwards and onwards ,hope we give the greeks a right good hammering mid week to get the confidence back in the team .

The fact has said what he has convinces me even more we will up our bid for Cazza.

Just a further point, for all those who say we are strong enough to get in the top 6 this season then today’s performance must ring alarm bells.

Not that I don’t expect us not to trounce teams with the same starting 11 but to endure the season with the euro games on top then I suggest you may be wrong.

Today was a hard lesson but we must use it to realise that we are one dimensional.

The lay striker I want to see here is Andy f**king Carroll. We need to stop going after target men and try to recruit a Pacey striker that runs the channels intelligently. Its what we are lacking. Its easy to defend against the two Demba’s as both play with their back to goal. All the opposition has to do is push the defence up the pitch and pressure us into long balls that are easily mopped up…i.e. What Spurs and Chelsea have done well.

I’m not saying you are wrong as he could well be telling the truth. My thoughts are though, if you wanted to play the mind games, bearing in mind we have bid £12m already and I’m sure they never went in with their highest offer at the start, we are going to say we have eyes on other players.

There is no doubt that Cazza will be fully aware of the situation as talks go on behind closed doors all the time.

I don’t know, I’m not a scout, but there has to be options out there. The more target men we get, the more likely 442 remains. Pardew needs to address this and fast as we are not progressing with this formation.

Also, can someone remind me what wingers are for? The way people rate Jonas you would think their primary function is to protect the full back. Its lame. We need wingers who cause the opposition problems.

I always dissed people who said cheap players were in Europe who were good enough to grace the top of the premier. However Carr has shown they are there.

But, they haven’t identified a striker all window.

I hope you are right and they have a player in mind but I’m not convinced.

As far as Jonas goes, he looks slow and overweight and has done for a season IMO.

Off to bed but will pick up any reply tomoz.

Hba need to be set free. only player looked capable of producing something today. sorry ba/cisse we can’t play with two up front. marv in please.

Not too worried about the defence. they didn’t create much clear cut. however in three games we have.barely created any clear.cut chances. every one of our goals have been individual moments brilliance. No team work evident.
Anita looked decent for a.debut in the league.
Coloccini is an absolute class act. anticipation is incredible.

  374. 374
    Big Dave says:

The Kid in that case we need FB’s that can do their job on their own and at the min we don’t have them, but I do agree that wingers are there to supply balls and attack etc, but as far as I can see most of the time Pards has Jonas helping out the FB which says to me that he doesn’t have enough faith in the LB doing the job on his own, tis the same with Cabaye who I think is a cracking AMF but seems to be playing as a DMF for 90% of the games even when we have Tiote

  375. 375
    Newkie says:

Jonas does seem to have lost that bit of pace he used to have, I wasn’t sure whether that was because we told him to bulk up to defend better? Or something? I don’t think he’s unfit as he still does plenty of running, but he does seem to have lost that little burst that you need in a winger….hence why we need to play him as a defensive mid

  376. 376
    kimtoon says:

What’s with all the Jonas bashing ,he always gives 100% and wins loads of free kicks. :???:

  377. 377
    kimtoon says:

Dave ,spot on that was gonna be my next point. ;-)

  378. 378
    Newkie says:

I’m a fan of Jonas, I just don’t rate him as an attacking winger. To protect Ryan Taylor/Santon, yeah he’s great, and to screen the defence in a tracking/dm role he’s good again but unfortunately other than that all he can do going forward is draw a foul. Considering none of our team can actually take a decent free kick to supply someone in the box, it’s kind of wasted. Sometimes we get a shooting opportunity, but we can’t rely on that.

  379. 379
    The Kid says:

    Solanostrumpet

Couldn’t agree with your last post more.

    Big Dave

Rather than have Jonas protecting Santon, I would rather we played a central midfield of Anita, Tiote and Cabaye. This would see one DM drop back into defence when a full back presses forward and still leave the midfield protected.

I would also drop a striker and play Marveaux on the wing. Our team lacks balance and seems like Pardew is putting round pegs in square holes to keep players happy. It is to the detriment of the team.

  380. 380
    Big Dave says:

Newkie maybe Jonas is just fuked with having to comeback and help out the defence, then he makes a few runs forward then the ball is lost so he has to tear back to help out again, our maybe he feels comfortable in his position because there is no one to threaten his spot.
But for me he is one of my fav players.
And I don’t think we need another DMF I think we have enough and I think our team in general have enough defenders and we should try to attack more, ATM we have 4 defenders plus Tiote and Cabaye sitting deep helping the defence, add to that that we have Jonas continually coming back to help out and even Benny’s game is affected because coming back and helping the defence seems to be part of his job too, so that seems to leave the Demba’s up top with no supply because all the other players are coming back to help the defence, and I hate to say it but it’s not really working

  381. 381
    The Kid says:

Its great saying that Ba can play wing, but disregarding whether or not he wants to play there, he just isn’t that good in that position. He is to cumbersome for that role. Hate to say it, but Johnson would have been perfect for that role

  382. 382
    Newkie says:

Dave-fucked as in tired? Or fucked as in bored? Well he can’t be tired as the season’s just started. If he’s bored then no offense but he should man up and be a professional, for someone who plays full back for his country he’s certainly been given a more attacking role with us, but imo he just doesn’t cut it. Doesn’t mean I don’t like him as a player mind, he’s one of my favourites. I don’t think we need any more DMs but we should have two, imo, allowing an attacking role for cabaye, demba and, benny as midfield linkups and papiss sitting up top. That’s how we played our best (both entertaining and successful) football last year. Don’t see why we’ve changed that.

We won our 4-4-2 matches with scrappy but determind and very very defensive play, using Ba’s immense conversion rate to our advantage. Sounds ridiculous but if we want to recreate that style of football we may aswell bench demba or cisse and hoof it up to Shola to knock on, because he actually can, and then hope to christ that either cisse or Ba can get to the ridiculous form they were in last year.

  383. 383
    Big Dave says:

Newkie I understand your point but I think if Jonas’s job was to just be a proper winger he would be better at it.
The Kid I agree because as it is now Cabaye is wasted because as a DMF he is no better than Perch but as an AMF he is top quality, as I see it Tiotes job is as a DMF that should sit infront of the back 4 to help them out, and the others should be helping attack and try to score goals. on the dropping a striker thats a problem too because Pards has told Ba that he will play as a CF which imo he shouldn’t have .

ST on Benny that is what he does best and shouldn’t have to worry about continually coming back and defending because no one causes the other team more problems than Benny does, and while he’s not attacking the other team don’t have to worry about him and can hit us even more.
I do think he will eventually get pissed off if he cant go out and do what he does best.

The Kid-I know what you’re saying, he’s not your traditional winger but imo he can play in a 4-3-3. Essentially he did in the second half agaisnt spurs, looked good and scored a fabulous goal. Fair enough last year he looked off the pace out there but imo he was just out of form/unlucky/cisse was just unbelievable. He’s worth giving a shot there again, he did score most of his goals for wham on the left. Would have liked Johnson though, and that’s exactly what i was saying before, pacey wing forward rather than an out and out CF, but meh.

    Newkie says:

Dave-Imo Jonas’job was to be a winger when we had enrique, possibly the best left back in the league, certainly one of them-including defensively. He rarely offered anything then, even though I liked him, so I just don’t think he has it in him to offer enough threat. Compare him to benny. Enough said really.

    Big Dave says:

Newkie fuked as in tired and the fact that he has to baby sit the FB yeah I know he plays at FB for the Argies but he is a winger

  387. 387
    Newkie says:

Considering he’s played more than anyone else in the last two seasons (i think) I’m pretty sure he’s only scored two league goals in both, and probably averaged at about 4 assists? Just off the top of my head.

  388. 388
    Newkie says:

Dave-I can understand tired after extensive running and the like, but the season only just started and imo he does less running with Santon in the side than he did with Raylor-he actually had to do pretty much all of Raylors running. For Santon he just needs to do the tackling ;-)

Disappointing result but not a disaster really :???: Not too many teams will travel to the bridge this year and pick up points.. They have a good team and will challenge this year.. I thought we were good in patches but we were playing too deep in our own half. We let Chelsea come onto us and with Cisse and Ba up front, we had no one with real pace to catch them on the counter…Our two strikers are deadly in and around the box but really seem ineffective further out.. Here’s hoping we can heap a shit load of pressure on Villa and pick up some points next weekend… It’s not the end of the world, would of liked a point though

    @Kimtoon

It’s not a case of Jonas bashing but just pointing out the reality.

I didn’t just choose him to criticise in my original post, I chose Ba & Cisse for their inability to hold the ball up
    .
Cabaye and Anita for being lightweight in the middle and Jonas for sitting too deep. He seems to have bulked up and looked sluggish.

He looks like he could lose half a stone.

  431. 431
    mark says:

lol troy u said that Jonas looked fat last season and he went on to have a cracking season  hopefully youre a good omen.

You’ll not see Jonas bursting forward due to him plying his trade as a covering wingback, hopefully at home this will change.

but in saying that, I’d like to see Jonas replaced and Marv released to play as a proper winger at home to Aston Villa. Benny replacing Ba or Cisse. Barfa defo needs to be further up the pitch, that kid could walk the ball into the net.

    @Mark

Are you sure you’ve read the disclaimer as you are one of the those I put it up for. ;-)

Jonas was stodgy for a large part of the season and I disagree, he didnt have a crackin season.

He improved as he got fitter but he seems to be starting slowly like last.
