Can Papiss repeat his wonder strikes?
That is of course the problem with the Europa League, but it’s a problem that will have to be managed if we are try and replicate what we achieved last season.
I’m not talking in terms of the result at Stamford Bridge, although another 2-0 win would be very welcome indeed, but I mean generally. The Europa League can take it’s toll on a squad over the course of a season, but with nine changes made for the match and a whole host of key players left out of the squad altogether I’m hopeful that, at least for now anyway, the impact of trip will be minimal on our squad.
I guess we haven’t got long to find out just how fatigued our squad is but at this early juncture of the season I wouldn’t be overly pleased to hear it as an excuse for an awful performance should one transpire at Stamford Bridge this afternoon. Hopefully that won’t be the case anyway…

Every “big” team we played 4-4-2 beat us last season didn’t they? With the exception of the 4-4-2 win over Manure where we had Shola playing target man (which he can, unlike Ba/Cisse) and where Benny didn’t play on the right, wasn’t it Raylor and then Obertan? We just don’t function with Cisse and Ba in a 4-4-2 and Benny is essentially wasted. Add to that we’ve lost Tiote and our midfield is just getting destroyed

I think he’s scared 4-3-3 would leave us open but I think if we had 3 sitting back deep in midfield then it would be the opposite. I think you should start a game playing you best formation and have a go at the opposition, the Spurs game taught us that. I don’t like going somewhere to ‘keep it tight’. It just never works, and here we are half time 2-0 down.

Well we’ve done better in the second half. Too many players not performing. To get something at Stamford Bridge everyone needs to be on their game, and players like Jonas and Cisse most definitely aren’t!
Cisse’s other attributes have always been average, hence why 4-3-3 where he doesn’t need to pass much suits him so well. He is on poor form though.

Kimtoon – Yes they’ve strengthened, but there is also such a thing as off days. Chelsea had one when we beat them last season with the help of two goals that Cisse will probably never ever score anything like again.
Sometimes things go for you, sometimes they don’t. Tonight we had too many players off their game but it’s not the end of the world. As the commentator says, Chelsea have had over £1 billion spent on them in a decade. They are a quality team, but we still could have scored two or three goals with better finishing.
The decent bit was for that last attacking bit.
Kim-I think it’s a bit about the formation too. Obviously they’ve brought in some great players, I just don’t get why we stick with 4-4-2, surely 4-3-3 got better out of Jonas, Cabaye, Cisse and Benny and probably Santon, and meant we relied less on creating things “down the wings” so Simmos lack of attacking play didn’t matter so much.

Lads I honestly believe we just needed a goal to spark us into life but that wasn’t to be I said I would be happy with a point because I didn’t really expect much else but I am disappointed that we didn’t have the spark because imo Chelski were there for the taking. I’m not to happy that we didn’t have anyone on the bench to come on and change things, even if Campbell was on the bench I would have put him on for Cisse because it was clear he wasn’t having a good day.
I still think Torres dived. There was contact, sure, but minimal, and then he threw himself down while dangling a foot out for more contact. Still, if it had happened to Ba I’d have been pissed if we didn’t get a penalty for it.
We had a few reasonably good chances, but in general I think it wasn’t as good a performance as I’d want to see. It was a fairly poor game all round.

Definitely some positives from that. 2nd half we played well – thought Anita grew into the game – only his first Premier league start against European Champions. He will get better. Passing was also a lot better 2nd half – Cisse looked a bit jaded, Ben Arfa was lively and I think we will collect a lot of points once the Dembas start firing. Both could have scored in the 2nd half.
Still need another striker and CB but this lot have spent £80 million this window and will be right up there challenging for the title IMO. Disappointed we lost be we were by no means mullered. If we play like that I think we can stuff Villa next Saturday
Dave – Exactly. That Cisse header that he fluffed, or that chance he had in the first half, or the one that Ba smashed straight at Cech… If anyone if those went in it’s a different game.
That is my point, we weren’t at our best yet we still caused them problems.
Obviously I can’t suggest that though as I’ll then be saying we played really well or will have my head in the sand

Bris-he did dive but like you said there’s contact and essentially that becomes a foul. Players lose all class and respectability when they do it, but it was a pen imo

Did we ever have “spark” when we were 4-4-2 though? I mean seriously? I know we won matches, but more often than not it was flicks from Bestie/Shola to feed Ba, the odd wonder goal, or scrappy stuff in an opposition box (good old own goal was our second top scorer until Cisse came along

We are still a long way from being a team that doesn’t know what defeat tastes like.
Beardo-I just don’t think 4-4-2 is tight. We’re generally always outnumbered in the middle, and if Tiote is out we’ve probably already lost it. Add in that HBA isn’t a defensive winger like Obertan was when we were winning in 4-4-2 then it just seems pointless.
Unless we kept it the same formation and dropped Ba back more, but I dunno, we just seem to have them both up top.
We came up a better team today and were beat. I thought we did ok. We were not over ran by a club we have had a billion £ invested in them over last 10 years or so. At times we passed the ball well and kept decent possession but would agree we didn’t click up front. I thought Marv done well when he came on.

We got beat by the team that will challenge the Manchester clubs this year. They have spent £80m this window. This is a much better Chelsea team than I have seen in years. No disgrace. Could have done better but early doors.

We were never gonna win that game today IMO, Manure etc. probably wouldn’t have. Forget, its history. Villa at home (they are falling apart) is a game that we could and should win. I just want the players to focus on that now. These are the games that get you the points in the bag.

Jonas couldn’t push their line back as he usually does.
Cisse and Ba were very poor at passing and holding up the ball – hopefully we will see more from them against Villa.
Ryan Taylor and Marveaux did nothing when they came on.
Perch looked like the best player in a Toon shirt when he came on.
That said Chelsea were tough to break down, they took their chances and we squandered two or three great chances.

Dave my point was the opposite. We did Ok against them. They showed enough to show they are a much better outfit than last year. They may not have enough to change the Manchester clubs, but they are class. They have spent well. They should finish third no probs. No disgrace being beaten. We can still do better.

Game changer my arse, we were well beat today by a Chelski side not even at 80%. They could have stepped it up another gear but didn’t have to in the second half. Unfortunately for us, Di Matteo, no Drogba, the alignment of Pluto with the sun; for whatever reason Torres is playing again and he destroyed us in the first half. Anita is still green behind the ears in this league.

I know we will get the piss taken for agreeing with each other but we have to speak the truth how we see things!
I have been jumped on for criticising Cabaye since he arrived. At this point, for anyone who doesn’t know my views on him, I want to clarify he’s a neat tidy player and has the ability to pick out a scintillating pass or two. However, my point has always been that so do most midfielders in the top teams in the premier. But he doesn’t do it often enough and he sits to deep when we already have a cracking defensive midfielder in Tiote.
Now Anita steps in and is clearly a defensive midfielder.
Nothing changed today for Cabaye. He sat deep and did nowt.
Before I get jumped on I want to emphasise I like him but don’t get carried away with the hype that some on here give him.
As I’ve pointed out on many occasions he looks far better when he gets forward. Far more dangerous and capable of scoring.
As for Anita, well he looked out of his depth but as always I will judge him in time. Not now.
As for Chelsea. I wasn’t impressed . They never looked that impressive to me. I’m talking in terms of winning the premier league here.

Premandup-But for me, 4-3-3 (or 4-5-1 as it could be interpreted) is precisely that-more flexible. Just seems to suit the attributes of most of our players better. That being said, perhaps Pards didn’t want to leave Anita alongside Jonas in their usual defensive roles and wanted him alongside Cabaye, a bit more conventional? Just seems that Jonas is a much better defender and could especially track the runs of Mata/Hazard whilst Cabaye could actually supply our forwards, instead of both of them failing to do the opposite.

I would love to see Cazza back at the Toon for the right price but if they have another lined up then so be it.

Kim-Aye he does look sharper. Thing is, Cisse doesn’t really ever look a *sharp player* he’s never looked as comfortable on the ball as Ba has (when they were both on their best forms) he just either takes his chances or he doesn’t.

Just listened to the Pardew interview.
My take on it is that when Pards refers to bringing in a younger player than Carroll , he is referring to a striker . However, that player would appear to be Adam Campbell , being brought into the first team squad.

The fact has said what he has convinces me even more we will up our bid for Cazza.
Just a further point, for all those who say we are strong enough to get in the top 6 this season then today’s performance must ring alarm bells.

The lay striker I want to see here is Andy f**king Carroll. We need to stop going after target men and try to recruit a Pacey striker that runs the channels intelligently. Its what we are lacking. Its easy to defend against the two Demba’s as both play with their back to goal. All the opposition has to do is push the defence up the pitch and pressure us into long balls that are easily mopped up…i.e. What Spurs and Chelsea have done well.

I always dissed people who said cheap players were in Europe who were good enough to grace the top of the premier. However Carr has shown they are there.

Not too worried about the defence. they didn’t create much clear cut. however in three games we have.barely created any clear.cut chances. every one of our goals have been individual moments brilliance. No team work evident.
Anita looked decent for a.debut in the league.
Coloccini is an absolute class act. anticipation is incredible.
The Kid in that case we need FB’s that can do their job on their own and at the min we don’t have them, but I do agree that wingers are there to supply balls and attack etc, but as far as I can see most of the time Pards has Jonas helping out the FB which says to me that he doesn’t have enough faith in the LB doing the job on his own, tis the same with Cabaye who I think is a cracking AMF but seems to be playing as a DMF for 90% of the games even when we have Tiote
Jonas does seem to have lost that bit of pace he used to have, I wasn’t sure whether that was because we told him to bulk up to defend better? Or something? I don’t think he’s unfit as he still does plenty of running, but he does seem to have lost that little burst that you need in a winger….hence why we need to play him as a defensive mid

I’m a fan of Jonas, I just don’t rate him as an attacking winger. To protect Ryan Taylor/Santon, yeah he’s great, and to screen the defence in a tracking/dm role he’s good again but unfortunately other than that all he can do going forward is draw a foul. Considering none of our team can actually take a decent free kick to supply someone in the box, it’s kind of wasted. Sometimes we get a shooting opportunity, but we can’t rely on that.

Rather than have Jonas protecting Santon, I would rather we played a central midfield of Anita, Tiote and Cabaye. This would see one DM drop back into defence when a full back presses forward and still leave the midfield protected.
I would also drop a striker and play Marveaux on the wing. Our team lacks balance and seems like Pardew is putting round pegs in square holes to keep players happy. It is to the detriment of the team.
Newkie maybe Jonas is just fuked with having to comeback and help out the defence, then he makes a few runs forward then the ball is lost so he has to tear back to help out again, our maybe he feels comfortable in his position because there is no one to threaten his spot.
But for me he is one of my fav players.
And I don’t think we need another DMF I think we have enough and I think our team in general have enough defenders and we should try to attack more, ATM we have 4 defenders plus Tiote and Cabaye sitting deep helping the defence, add to that that we have Jonas continually coming back to help out and even Benny’s game is affected because coming back and helping the defence seems to be part of his job too, so that seems to leave the Demba’s up top with no supply because all the other players are coming back to help the defence, and I hate to say it but it’s not really working
Its great saying that Ba can play wing, but disregarding whether or not he wants to play there, he just isn’t that good in that position. He is to cumbersome for that role. Hate to say it, but Johnson would have been perfect for that role
Dave-fucked as in tired? Or fucked as in bored? Well he can’t be tired as the season’s just started. If he’s bored then no offense but he should man up and be a professional, for someone who plays full back for his country he’s certainly been given a more attacking role with us, but imo he just doesn’t cut it. Doesn’t mean I don’t like him as a player mind, he’s one of my favourites. I don’t think we need any more DMs but we should have two, imo, allowing an attacking role for cabaye, demba and, benny as midfield linkups and papiss sitting up top. That’s how we played our best (both entertaining and successful) football last year. Don’t see why we’ve changed that.
We won our 4-4-2 matches with scrappy but determind and very very defensive play, using Ba’s immense conversion rate to our advantage. Sounds ridiculous but if we want to recreate that style of football we may aswell bench demba or cisse and hoof it up to Shola to knock on, because he actually can, and then hope to christ that either cisse or Ba can get to the ridiculous form they were in last year.

ST on Benny that is what he does best and shouldn’t have to worry about continually coming back and defending because no one causes the other team more problems than Benny does, and while he’s not attacking the other team don’t have to worry about him and can hit us even more.
I do think he will eventually get pissed off if he cant go out and do what he does best.

Considering he’s played more than anyone else in the last two seasons (i think) I’m pretty sure he’s only scored two league goals in both, and probably averaged at about 4 assists? Just off the top of my head.
Dave-I can understand tired after extensive running and the like, but the season only just started and imo he does less running with Santon in the side than he did with Raylor-he actually had to do pretty much all of Raylors running. For Santon he just needs to do the tackling

Not too many teams will travel to the bridge this year and pick up points.. They have a good team and will challenge this year.. I thought we were good in patches but we were playing too deep in our own half. We let Chelsea come onto us and with Cisse and Ba up front, we had no one with real pace to catch them on the counter…Our two strikers are deadly in and around the box but really seem ineffective further out.. Here’s hoping we can heap a shit load of pressure on Villa and pick up some points next weekend… It’s not the end of the world, would of liked a point though

It’s not a case of Jonas bashing but just pointing out the reality.
I didn’t just choose him to criticise in my original post, I chose Ba & Cisse for their inability to hold the ball up

Jonas was stodgy for a large part of the season and I disagree, he didnt have a crackin season.
He improved as he got fitter but he seems to be starting slowly like last.
