Game On! Chelsea v Newcastle – No Tiote, Anita starts

Can Papiss repeat his wonder strikes?
Game two of the new Premier League season takes place this evening as we venture to London to face Chelsea less than 48 hours after playing in the searing Athens heat.

That is of course the problem with the Europa League, but it’s a problem that will have to be managed if we are try and replicate what we achieved last season.

I’m not talking in terms of the result at Stamford Bridge, although another 2-0 win would be very welcome indeed, but I mean generally. The Europa League can take it’s toll on a squad over the course of a season, but with nine changes made for the match and a whole host of key players left out of the squad altogether I’m hopeful that, at least for now anyway, the impact of trip will be minimal on our squad.

I guess we haven’t got long to find out just how fatigued our squad is but at this early juncture of the season I wouldn’t be overly pleased to hear it as an excuse for an awful performance should one transpire at Stamford Bridge this afternoon. Hopefully that won’t be the case anyway…

Enough waffle. Team news, as ever will be published below as and when it becomes available, and if you happen to stumble upon any streams of the match then please feel free to accidentally post a link to it in the comments section below.

Let’s do this.

Howay the lads!

  1. I’m a fan of Jonas, I just don’t rate him as an attacking winger. To protect Ryan Taylor/Santon, yeah he’s great, and to screen the defence in a tracking/dm role he’s good again but unfortunately other than that all he can do going forward is draw a foul. Considering none of our team can actually take a decent free kick to supply someone in the box, it’s kind of wasted. Sometimes we get a shooting opportunity, but we can’t rely on that.

Couldn’t agree with your last post more.

    Big Dave

Rather than have Jonas protecting Santon, I would rather we played a central midfield of Anita, Tiote and Cabaye. This would see one DM drop back into defence when a full back presses forward and still leave the midfield protected.

I would also drop a striker and play Marveaux on the wing. Our team lacks balance and seems like Pardew is putting round pegs in square holes to keep players happy. It is to the detriment of the team.

  3. Newkie maybe Jonas is just fuked with having to comeback and help out the defence, then he makes a few runs forward then the ball is lost so he has to tear back to help out again, our maybe he feels comfortable in his position because there is no one to threaten his spot.
But for me he is one of my fav players.
And I don’t think we need another DMF I think we have enough and I think our team in general have enough defenders and we should try to attack more, ATM we have 4 defenders plus Tiote and Cabaye sitting deep helping the defence, add to that that we have Jonas continually coming back to help out and even Benny’s game is affected because coming back and helping the defence seems to be part of his job too, so that seems to leave the Demba’s up top with no supply because all the other players are coming back to help the defence, and I hate to say it but it’s not really working 😆 😆

  4. Its great saying that Ba can play wing, but disregarding whether or not he wants to play there, he just isn’t that good in that position. He is to cumbersome for that role. Hate to say it, but Johnson would have been perfect for that role

  5. Dave-****** as in tired? Or ****** as in bored? Well he can’t be tired as the season’s just started. If he’s bored then no offense but he should man up and be a professional, for someone who plays full back for his country he’s certainly been given a more attacking role with us, but imo he just doesn’t cut it. Doesn’t mean I don’t like him as a player mind, he’s one of my favourites. I don’t think we need any more DMs but we should have two, imo, allowing an attacking role for cabaye, demba and, benny as midfield linkups and papiss sitting up top. That’s how we played our best (both entertaining and successful) football last year. Don’t see why we’ve changed that.

We won our 4-4-2 matches with scrappy but determind and very very defensive play, using Ba’s immense conversion rate to our advantage. Sounds ridiculous but if we want to recreate that style of football we may aswell bench demba or cisse and hoof it up to Shola to knock on, because he actually can, and then hope to christ that either cisse or Ba can get to the ridiculous form they were in last year.

  6. Newkie I understand your point but I think if Jonas’s job was to just be a proper winger he would be better at it.
The Kid I agree because as it is now Cabaye is wasted because as a DMF he is no better than Perch but as an AMF he is top quality, as I see it Tiotes job is as a DMF that should sit infront of the back 4 to help them out, and the others should be helping attack and try to score goals. on the dropping a striker thats a problem too because Pards has told Ba that he will play as a CF which imo he shouldn’t have .

ST on Benny that is what he does best and shouldn’t have to worry about continually coming back and defending because no one causes the other team more problems than Benny does, and while he’s not attacking the other team don’t have to worry about him and can hit us even more.
I do think he will eventually get pissed off if he cant go out and do what he does best.

  7. The Kid-I know what you’re saying, he’s not your traditional winger but imo he can play in a 4-3-3. Essentially he did in the second half agaisnt spurs, looked good and scored a fabulous goal. Fair enough last year he looked off the pace out there but imo he was just out of form/unlucky/cisse was just unbelievable. He’s worth giving a shot there again, he did score most of his goals for wham on the left. Would have liked Johnson though, and that’s exactly what i was saying before, pacey wing forward rather than an out and out CF, but meh.

  8. Dave-Imo Jonas’job was to be a winger when we had enrique, possibly the best left back in the league, certainly one of them-including defensively. He rarely offered anything then, even though I liked him, so I just don’t think he has it in him to offer enough threat. Compare him to benny. Enough said really.

  9. Considering he’s played more than anyone else in the last two seasons (i think) I’m pretty sure he’s only scored two league goals in both, and probably averaged at about 4 assists? Just off the top of my head.

  10. Dave-I can understand tired after extensive running and the like, but the season only just started and imo he does less running with Santon in the side than he did with Raylor-he actually had to do pretty much all of Raylors running. For Santon he just needs to do the tackling 😉

by the way i agree with your da about chelsea not even being @ 80% – they took an easy ride in the 2nd half without a doubt.

  18. Disappointing result but not a disaster really 😕 Not too many teams will travel to the bridge this year and pick up points.. They have a good team and will challenge this year.. I thought we were good in patches but we were playing too deep in our own half. We let Chelsea come onto us and with Cisse and Ba up front, we had no one with real pace to catch them on the counter…Our two strikers are deadly in and around the box but really seem ineffective further out.. Here’s hoping we can heap a **** load of pressure on Villa and pick up some points next weekend… It’s not the end of the world, would of liked a point though

    @Kimtoon

It’s not a case of Jonas bashing but just pointing out the reality.

I didn’t just choose him to criticise in my original post, I chose Ba & Cisse for their inability to hold the ball up
    .
Cabaye and Anita for being lightweight in the middle and Jonas for sitting too deep. He seems to have bulked up and looked sluggish.

He looks like he could lose half a stone.

  27. lol troy u said that Jonas looked fat last season and he went on to have a cracking season 😀 hopefully youre a good omen.

You’ll not see Jonas bursting forward due to him plying his trade as a covering wingback, hopefully at home this will change.

but in saying that, I’d like to see Jonas replaced and Marv released to play as a proper winger at home to Aston Villa. Benny replacing Ba or Cisse. Barfa defo needs to be further up the pitch, that kid could walk the ball into the net.

    @Mark

Are you sure you’ve read the disclaimer as you are one of the those I put it up for. 😉

Jonas was stodgy for a large part of the season and I disagree, he didnt have a crackin season.

He improved as he got fitter but he seems to be starting slowly like last.
