Debuchy deal could still happen

With our league rivals like Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham all strengthening their squads this summer, I think it should be time that we kept up with the pack and added some new faces to our squad.

Our only significant signing has been Vurnon Anita from Ajax and some might say Romain Amalfitano but I see him as more of a squad player who won’t really break into the first team this season.

We have also brought in some good young prospects in the shape of Curtis Good and Gael Bigirimana who are no doubt great prospects for the future, especially Bigirimana who has already put in some eye catching performances in pre-season, but they are hardly for the now either are they?

Other than Anita I cannot see any of our signings putting enough pressure on the first team which will create a little friendly competition which is key to having a successful squad. Also the loss of key squad players like Danny Guthrie and Leon Best have created holes in the squad and areas on the pitch in which we have no backup if a first team player were to get injured or suspended.

This makes me think of the teams around us who have added key first team members to their squads, for example Eden Hazard, Oscar and Marin have been added by Chelsea. Unlike Newcastle everyone of these signings is capable of getting into the first team ahead of other players in the team like Lampard, Essien and Ramires. This creates the competition for squad places which will result in the performances from the players competing for positions improving.

This is why I feel Newcastle need to make new additions as players like Yohan Cabaye, Cheik Tiote, Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse know that they have no competition in the squad therefore don’t have to put in consistently good performances to get in the first team every week and this is what could stop Newcastle from following up our terrific season last season and challenging with the best in the league.

We have all heard the rumoured signings we could be making. I’m still optimistic that Mathieu Debuchy will sign before transfer window shut on Septemeber 1st, strictly because he has made his ambitions clear to Lille that he wants to leave the club and come to Newcastle, it is only the President of Lille holding back the deal as he is demanding what we deem as too much money for the defender. I think as the deadline gets closer, the asking price for Debuchy will be lowered because what is the point in having a player at your club who doesn’t want to be there? Plus they’ve already signed a replacement for him so they can leave business until very late in the window to try and extract the best deal for themselves.

Another possible signing would be Andy Carroll who looks like he will be left in the dark at Liverpool as Brendan Rodgers has made it clear Carroll doesn’t feature in his plans. Carroll made it known to West Ham when they approached him that he would only leave Liverpool to return to his boyhood club Newcastle.

Many fans may not want Carroll back but I would welcome the signing as it is very clear he has bags of ability and we simply need more strikers at the club. Alan Pardew has made a bid to bring Carroll back if you believe the press but it looks like Liverpool are holding out to get a big portion of the £35M of what they paid for Carroll back off Newcastle, but we all know Ashley will not be bullied into overpaying for anyone.

It is clear that we need to bring in a few more players before the deadline, question is who will those players be?

Debuchy is possible but may be dependent upon Lille crashing out of the Champions league. They lost the away leg. That would change the finances at Lille.

Douglas has now qualified for Holland through residency and it is his agents holding up the deal. This could therefore drag on til January or even til he is out of contract at the end of the season.

Pieters is still waiting on fitness and may therefore wait to January

Carroll is very much on the cards and could happen sooner than expected given that Brenda wants to bring in new strikers.

What we do know is that we don’t buy unless the deal is right. We were prepared to wait for Cisse and will wait until these are either right or gone.

Connornufc…I think the makkems making two big money signings this week will increase the frustration amongst the toon fans so close to the start of the new season.
However, we have no chance, and more obviously no interest, in competing financially with the likes of Chelsea, Manure and Arsenal. They have all made crazy multi million pound signings in the close season..

The frustrating thing about our lot though, is that we are not crying out for big money signings, just a couple of steady signings to strengthen the side for a hard season ahead. My fear is how this apparent lack of investment will be taken on board by our big hitters …including Pardew…

premandup regarding Douglas, it’s probably a risky move for him to wait all this time for a cloggy passport only to move on to the EPL.
However, I also think that if he does come to the UK he’ll move to Fulham and his cloggy mate Jol…

just dont know whats going to happen at the toon, and dont think the money the scum have spent will have any impact on jabba thoughts,i will say its funny how quick scum signed those players more or less inside a week yet we have been dragging on for weeks in this window which makes me think there are not going to be any,we will get the fairy storey of how they tried to get this one and that one pish

Well Connor ,as you say everyone else seems to be improving their squads with first team quality and it’s very frustrating that we seem to be happy as we are. There are rumours that we are to be busy this week but I can’t see that more than one would come in at this late stage .The logistics of securing more than one signing given the fact we have a late game today and another mid week tell me it ain’t gonna happen. Why would we rush through 2 or 3 now when it could of been done when we wern’t so busy. :???: . Chelsea have also added a further two to those you have mentioned as well. If only one comes in what position is it for, given we need a CB ,FB and FWD some of us are still gonna be unhappy .It was a great effort last year but we have more distractions this year plus teams are gonna be wiser to the Dembas and Benny &co so we need to be able to mix it up with fresh faces imo.Add to the fact we can ill afford any injuries to our best players for any length of time and the need for reinforcements is clear ,see Colo and Tiote a doubt for today as evidence of that. Yes worrying times indeed ,oh well hopefully all worries will be put to bed in the coming week but I won’t hold my breath.

  11. 11
    Stardust says:

Came into the window knowing we needed a CB and RB , if we leave the window without strengthening those positions you have to say it will be an epic fail. Players who give everything on the pitch will be psychologically scarred – if the club won’t help them to achieve when they give everything their allegiance to the club has to be harmed to a greater or lesser degree.

We have never been in such a strong position going into a window – which will make a fail all the harder to take. But there’s still hope – however dim.

  12. 12
    premandup says:

BTW anybody got any updates on the Loic Remy deal. He has not played this season. Is that injury? Because a deal is in the air? Fallen out of favor? Heard that Joey Barton was going to become a new team mate?

    Jon R says:

Icedog – I guess it’s easier to get deals done when you’re prepared to pay stupid money for average players ;-) It still took them months to get the Fletcher one over the line though.

Don’t agree that everyone else is improving their squads. Arsenal have sold their two best players and have simply re-spent that money. Spurs have replaced their manager with a little boy and have sold Modric. Liverpool are all over the place.

Would be disappointed if we don’t get 2 in this week though. I still think we will.

I think that the most important signing will be Debuchy :-)

    icedog says:

JON R,i am not saying we should go and spend silly money, but what ime saying is we had a good chance to move forward,of the teams that were in the top six in the PL at the end of the season five have spent 30mil plus on new players to try and move on we have spent 3mil net is that moveing forward ????

  16. 16
    premandup says:

Ice given that our squad is significantly stronger than this time last year I would argue that we have moved forward. Arsenal & Spurs have not in my opinion, whereas Chelsea and Everton Have.

  17. 17
    Big Dave says:

I think Jabba and the club will have made a massive mistake if they don’t stregthen the squad in the areas that were badly needed. As even Stardy says we badly needed a CB and FB but if you sell your 2 backup striker the surely it must be obvious that we need to bring in a decent Striker, because if we have an injury we will be screwed, and if the Dembas go to ACON we’ll be well and truely screwed if we have to count on Strolla scoring the goals to keep us in the race for the top 6.
And there lies a bigger problem in that our top players will be well pissed off if we don’t make Europe because of the Club’s lack of ambition.

  18. 18
    Munich Mag says:

icedog@15, I wouldn’t even term it moving forward, perhaps even just consolidating our position. Everyone knows that we need more strength in depth, but our lot will do it there way, however that may be… This will be a tough season for everyone, players and fans alike. The expectations of the fans, and the players have been raised, it would be a tragic missed opportunity if the club didn’t follow all the hard work up by backing the manager and players.

Fletcher 12 million, Johnson 10 million. How can Fletcher be worth more than Johnson ? Somebody needs to explain that one to me…

Icedog – you moan that our net spend is £3m, but Arsenal’s and Spurs’ net spends are negative. Yet somehow they are showing more ambition? They have lost their best assets. How are they strengthened? I don’t understand.

I bet if you’d have asked any Arsenal fan whether they would have kept RVP and Song and spent nowt, or sold them both and replaced them as they have done, they would have rather have kept them.

Not saying I am satisfied with how things have gone for us up to now either. But i’m still confident we will get 2 players in, in which case I will be very happy.

  25. 25
    SolanosTrumpet says:

    @Ice
To be fair mate you can’t judge our spending by net value and not other teams. You have to use the same measurement for each team – so Arsenal effectively £0, and Tottenham not much either.

I’m most worried about Everton tbh, Spurs have a stronger all round squad than us (being able to let people like Dawson and Bassong go!), so I think finishing higher than them will be a challenge.
    Same goes for Arsenal.
And i think we’ve actually got closer to these two teams this window based on the players they’ve lost.

and yeah more worried about Everton than Liverpool. They have made great strides on us this window.

Not signing a CB would be utterly irresponsible and there’s nothing that can be said to justify it. Not signing a striker is a risky gamble.

  26. 26
    SolanosTrumpet says:

I think signing Sahin nudges Carroll a bit closer to the door.
It means they’ll probably be playing 1 main striker so if they bring someone in then I think he’ll be allowed out.
Whereas if they were playing 2 strikers they might have wanted 4 and kept Carroll even if they brought someone in.

  27. 27
  28. 28
    SolanosTrumpet says:

Also while Adam Johnson is a terrific player imo, I am glad we stayed away and think Sunderland should have as well.
It’s just throwing away money for the sake of it.
They needed someone guaranteed to score goals, Fletcher and Saha “might” but aren’t reliable. They need a CM and they need some quality in defence.
They have McClean and Larsson already, it is a position that has been unnecessarily splashed on when they have greater problems.
I’d be just as livid with the board if they signed Debuchy but didn’t address our actual needs of a CB and maybe a Striker.

  29. 29
    Munich Mag says:

Regarding incoming transfers, maybe our lot are waiting for the “big clubs” to splash the cash, before we move in and sweep up with last minute cheaper deals ?

  30. 30
    spyro says:

Sooner the window shuts the better..

We have be linked with everyone from A-Z this summer, from Affelay to Zaha with all letters in between covered some more than others.. Debuchy, Douglas , De Jong

Given past transfers and the success with those last year, we all knew getting new faces in was going to be tough and have been proved right.

Our policy is we pay “Our Price” not what agents or clubs demand and imo its important we stick to that becuase we value for example Debuchy at £6m but pay the £8 mil or whatever figure the papers print next.
Then you can be sure Twente hold out for £7 mil for Douglas and not the reported £4 or £5 mil we value him at + whatever the agents decide they need on top in order to secure their clients best interests.

So then transfer policy is out of the window and every time we go in for a player we get held to ransom.

When window closes our squad is exactly how it is today fine … there is more than enough quality in there to compete with cover for few injuries.
we have some top quality kids – if they are good enough play them

Yes we have Europe this year but the fitness levels and bankrolls all players have ..They are more than capable of playing 2 games a week for at least the first few months of seasons before complaining of burn out.

So it could be we are working on January targets.

With the shite down road spending a few quid yesterday of course a few of ours are going to question why havent we spent at least that.

We havent needed too..our quality is already here and they have spent to appease the apes (apologies to apes everywhere)that wasted their giros on seasons tickets this year

    Still no need for panic

  31. 31
    Munich Mag says:

SolanosTrumpet, regarding a back up striker, I think you’re right, we need someone in for sure. It’s a pity that both Ameobi’s are injured, for differing reasons. Was looking forward to seeing whether Sammi has it in him to make a breakthrough this season. Hopefully he’ll be back soon.

I thought we really struggled midweek to creat chances for our striker. I can see it being a problem with our strongest 11 too. Thank goodness we have 2 or 3 players who can score goals out of nothing. It doesn’t however mean that it has to be our main tactic.

  32. 32
    Munich Mag says:

Spyro@30 …hats off for your optimism mate. I think the performance in midweek of some of our seasoned pro’s left me somewhat disappointed, hence my negativity..

Not enough depth up front or defence for sure.

    Munich Mag says:

Take Cabaye and Ben Arfa out of our team and we’re struggling to create. Of course the majority of clubs now know that and will play against the toon accordingly. At the end of the day there are absolutely no easy games in the EPL…

    icedog says:

i will over the moon if we get a c/d and f/b in,i also think everton will have a good season, pleased we kept away from johnson at 10 mil he is a canny player at times but very lazy at times and sure his wages will be quite high, but still think if no one comes in we have missed a trick here, even pardew said himself last season ;; mike wants to know when we are going to get a c/b in,what a load of cobblers hes the man with the purse strings ffs

  37. 37
    Robert says:

Carroll needs to sort his move out sooner than later or he will end up like a lot of players at Man City etc who dont play regular and lose their form and fitness.
Shaun Wright Philips and Obertan come to mind on this score, its allright sitting on the bench collecting big wages but how do they pick the pace and intensity up again? and I think this also showed with some of our players on Thursday.
Same goes for Adam Johnson, great player when he signed for City and a match winner, but is he the same player now after being bit part for 2 seasons, we will see.
I heard Alan Brazil saying that Carroll wasnt risked last Thursday as he was being protected for an imminent move away from Anfield and if he is not in the squad tomorrow, I can see him in black and white shirt again next week.

  38. 38
    stephen1971 says:

i think we have moved forward from last season and to make the next step will need to be a huge step, theres a lot of clubs spending funny money above us , so for us to spend £3m and have anita , bigi, good and ama is quality business on our part, i,d rather see them using young campbell then going out to buy a big name striker, the lad looks class and could be a big boost for us as he plays with no fear and has pace to burn, i think debuchy would be a good move though as it would,nt just strengthen the team but would also be a massive boost for cabaye too

    wolfie says:

Possibly a commanding centre back could be deemed more a priority than anything in reality.
Yeah a striker would be nice and Andy Carroll would be an obvious scoop but we have to be careful we don’t buy in players who aren’t prepared to play in a rotating system, which they would have to, because that can create a lot of disgruntlement especially as we haven’t won anything of note to make them accept the reasons for being a bit part.

It works at Man Utd and Man City because those players are hunting trophies on all fronts and paying astronomical wages…we aren’t, yet we aren’t paying peanuts either but it can be regarded as peanuts to big named players, so we have to be careful we don’t fall back into that category as it breeds greed throughout eventually and is detrimental to the whole ethics that has been created at this club.

I’m pleased to say that Ashley and Llambias know what they’re doing and won;t be mugged off by price or wage demands, so in that respect, we are in good hands.

With the emergence of Campbell and a return to fitness of both Ameobi’s i think we could be ok in the striker department untill January , if we could just get Debuchy and another CB in this week it will be a good transfer window but without another 2 defenders we are going to struggle . Williamson imo is just not good enough so that leaves us with only Colo ,Taylor (injury prone?) perch as senior CB’s

  46. 46
    Big Dave says:

Stephen I would love to see young Campbell stepping up, but I think it’s far to early for him and a massive ask to expect him to cover for the Demba’s if/when they go to the ACON, I said before that I hope the fans don’t start to put too much pressure on him, and I think it’s starting to happen.

But Anita and Bigi looked tidy in middle , Perch decent and was pleased to see Campbell getting a run out so was still positives to take from it and while it wasnt to the standard we are becoming accustomed to..it was job done onto Chelsea.

Dave, I am as happy as anyone about how things are going yet we punched above our weight last season and will be expected to do so again this season. The lack of investment shows the lack of ambition. They have a week to rectify this and they still may do but let’s be honest, failure to secure a centre back when we have needed one for a couple of years now is pathetic. Leaving it this late pushes prices up if anything do it doesn’t even make good business sense.

The priority is to clear the debt. The makems spend half their tv rights money on bringing in 2 players which are better than anything else they have at the minute and we’ll no doubt use ours for some floodlights at Benton

  58. 58
    Munich Mag says:

Moreno when it all comes down to it at the end of the day, the “ambitious” clubs (and clubs owned by the big money men / sheiks etc) realise that the big money is in the Champions League. To get into the Champions League is extremely difficult, and at the end of the day, perhaps only 2 places may be up for grabs anyway (due mainly to the spending power and attraction of the “top clubs” Man Utd and Man City).
That leaves Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham battering out out for the last 2 places. Really we are way ahead of the form that we even are sniffing around the top 6. However, we punched above our weight last year, and still made it into europe. The bummer is that the fans appetite has been whetted, and we need to recognise which type of owner we have. He isn’t going to go for quick fixes. However, that doesn’t mean that the fans won’t be getting frustrated, cos we haven’t been splashing the cash.

The toon are traditionally a team which kick around 6 – 10th position, with an occasional power surge which gets us to the pinnacle of the EPL. We seem to be now on a bit of a power surge, we’ll see how the owners and the management team take us the next step. The term “consolidation” springs to mind…

  62. 62
    Axel says:

MUNICH MAG agree m8 Ranger could have been a very good player and it was sheer stupidity to give him a 5 year deal when even then everyone knew he was a knob heed . As for punching above our weight last season i have too disagree ,we deserved 5th we played good football and when you look at our squad we have as good a team as any apart from the 2 Manchesters and Chelsea ,i see both Arsenal and Spurs falling out of the top six this term . Its now up too Ashley though he has a week to put his hand in his pocket ,pull out his wallet and get 2 defenders in .Still think 5-6this on this season

They always seem to slip under the radar untill late in the season .We are all talking about them now because of their brilliant win over Manure last week ,but I think Fellani is a big player for them as is the Jellyman when fit ,much will depend on those two staying injury free. Same can be said for us with a few key players but Istill think we have an overall better squad .

Robert@37 ,I wouldn’t be too sure on Carroll coming back ,word on the Liverpool site is Villa preparing a £17m bid, that’s one team I would hate to see land him.

Ice@39 ,They are utterly ,utterly clueless.

    CC says:

Everton are a consistant solid team and never get the credit for their achievements on a small budget. Their downfall will probably be similar to us, They have an good first 11 and a few decent back up players but a few injuries/suspensions and they are relying on young lads.

    Axel says:

DUBTOON unless he was saving him for the game today , if Tiote is injured he might very well be on the Bench today with starts for Cabaye and Anita . Being one of the young kids Pardew maybe thought it was too much too take him and use him today . He must be nearer the first team than Bigi , Ama and maybe even Gosling .

  102. 102

Routers gets a standing O coming off for Swansea today.

The way the Swans are playing…seems like Rodgers took a step back in his career

  104. 104
    Munich Mag says:

Axel I think while imo they are completely different types and perhaps it is unfair to compare them, Bigi is way further ahead in his development than Abeid. Bigi is much more versatile, covers more space, and has a wider range to his passing than Abeid. Would love to see them both come good though.

  105. 105

And I think Big Dave was making a point about Routers vs. Obertan yesterday…

  106. 106
    kimtoon says:

Moreno@103 Agree, but had Buck stayed would they be this good? not imo. For all his pretty passing game last season they had no penetration really it was all passing in circles and back to back line.

  107. 107
    Axel says:

Yeah MUNICH it would be fantastic too see them both break through , the thing is if Tiote is injured then Abied is a more defensive minded player too replace him . I am sure Pardew said last season he saw Abied as Tiote’s stand in when injured, suspended or on international duty .

  108. 108
    chris says:

we need some major signings before we get left behind we have no real pace to hit teams on the counter attack were are the goals coming from if any thing happens to the our to mane strikers theres no one that has goals in them to win us games a goal scoring midfielder quick striker and powerfull cb who is good in the air a rb who is sollid at defending

“For all his pretty passing game last season they had no penetration really it was all passing in circles and back to back line.”

Aye i was thinking that watching it, They looked so much sharper in and around the edge of the opposition box. Cant wait to see the reaction at anfield when they are losing and carry on playing daft one twos with the goalkeeper…

  110. 110
    Moreno says:

    DJG says:

Having started the season I have changed my opinion that we need a CB and I now think if we get in one player before the 1st of September it has to be a striker. We will not be able to cope with just the two Dembas and Shola (who is rarely fit these days like it or not Shola lovers). The fact that Cisse had to travel to Greece and play 75mins on Thursday and will have to travel to London and probably start less than 48 hours later is pushing it to the limit. We have let Best and Lovenkrands go over the summer and haven’t replaced and both would have probably played barring injuries.

    Munich Mag says:

Batty, after the initial disappointment of the game perhaps being called off, I would prefer to play Chelsea on a proper surface. There’s nowt worse than the specatacle of the ball holding up in puddles and stuff… and also the danger of serious injury.

Feel sorry for a couple of my mates who have flown in from abroad specially for the game. Who would expect Newcastle and Sunderland games both being waterlogged and postponed on the same day. I wish I had of put a fiver on that one… ;-)
