Just some quick highlights of the 2-0 defeat suffered at Stamford Bridge yesterday evening for you all to review.

All in all I’m not overly bothered about the loss. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like us losing, but sometimes you just have to accept defeat. We were no great shakes and too many players had off days, especially our strikers who could have bagged two or three goals on another night with the chances they had.

Three points from two games against Tottenham and Chelsea isn’t something to worry about in my book, and I honestly can’t believe some of the melodrama I’ve see from NUFC fans since the match last night. These are two teams, one of which would be playing Champions League football had it not been for the other one actually winning the competition.

Oh well, onwards and upwards…

  1. Pards for the first is showing weakness. We have a group of players perfectly suited to 451 / 433 – yet he keeps 442 for the benefit of one player – Ba.

Let’s hope he moves to change that quickly.

  3. I realt dont like it when we play 442. I think a 4312 like italy played in the euros would suit us. Especially if we get debuchy in since that formation requires offensively good fullbacks.

  4. does any one think felani from everton would be a good asset with a 10 mill bid plus they can have gosling back or offer simpson as part of a deal

      (Quote)

  5. Chris we would have no chance of getting Fellani for 10 million , it would cost double and Everton would not sell to us and Fellani would be looking for a club with a chance of winning the League and playing CL .

  6. Last season great finish was down to the unbeaten run we had at the start of the season. Now I fear that without a similar start this season we are going to fall back into Normality. i.e a mid table finish.

Certainly Pardew yesterday played a very generic game. There was no identifiable tactical direction. Just seemed a bit get it the Ba or Cisse and hope they have an answer.

  7. big dave get debuchy to replace simmo what do u think us going in for nani season loan not wanted at manure is he better than the wingers we have at the moment its worth ago and think chelski would let us have sturridge on loan what do u think

  8. Stardust – I think you right mate, and Ba proved against Spurs that he can still score cutting in off the left. I didn’t see the game live but some of the highlights made it look like Ba and Cisse were getting in each others way a bit as well .. did anyone else pick up on that watch it live or is the highlights being a bit unfair?
The reality is that Chelsea yesterday was alot different to the Chelsea we beat last season. I still think that they are a Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure away from Man City like but a very powerful attacking force. I think they are going to have a bit of a Vindaloo season – ‘were gonna score one more than you’ mentality, coz I see them conceding goals.

We need to focus on our game, I think we can give Cisse a rest on Thursday and still make it thru. Our board need to get their finger our this week and get the players in we need.
I’m not even prepared to consider us loosing any of our stars – if we do, the board are taking a huge step backwards and (whilst I doubt they care) will loose any fans who have softened on the way they operate – oh, and we can forget top 4-6 as well.

  9. Spuds and Chelsea first games…

    6 points – incredible
    4 points – very good
    3 points – good
    2 points – ok
    1 point – not great
    0 points – bad

We have got three points from two very difficult games.

We havnt been fluent but I’ve seen enough to be fairly positive…

Those thinking we will sign Carroll… you are all insane. We will get Debuchy or Douglas at most… Maybe a young striker we not heard of…

      (Quote)

  10. All Im saying is don’t get your hopes up, because their is more chance of one of our players leaving at this point than their is of us bringing anyone in…

    Chris,
We won’t sign anyone on loan, and especially not those you mentioned…

      (Quote)

  11. axel fair comment do u think we would be better off going for a rb that is a solid defender that doesont loose his man instead of geting debuchi because of his attacking why not get a solid rb and a right sided winger who has pace and noes were the goal is play benny behind the striker in a no 10 role

  12. Anyone else been watching Stoke v Arsenal , i think we are as good as Arsenal and dodged a bullet not buying Gervinho

      (Quote)

  13. We all knew we were short of players due to those that have left and have not been replaced, and also the positions we need to strengthen in, but here we go again, into the last week and running the risk of being left with our trousers around our ankles again.
If we had sorted out new fullbacks and a decent centre half, I could accept that we have to wheel and deal a bit with Cabaye/Carroll/Tiote in the last week, but leaving nearly all the business until the last minute is pure insanity.

      (Quote)

  14. Not a lot of positives, I didn’t expect us to win but Chelsea breezed it. They don’t take teams to the cleaners under Di Matteo, they take the lead and then they control the game, and they did exactly that. Benny looked sharp and Colo obviously did well, felt everyone else should have done better, the only player who should be tired is Cisse. Hopefully it was just one of those days, but I still don’t get why we didn’t even try and change it up considering how easy it was for Chelsea.

      (Quote)

  15. Sorry, Anita in there as well. He was unlucky with the pen, thought he did well considering he played on thursday and it was his first league game.

      (Quote)

  16. Axel; I’m watching the game and Arsenal will be lucky to finish in the top 8 this season with their current squad.
I am so happy that we did not sign Gervinho last year.

Vertonghen at Spurs hasn’t impressed me either.

  17. I don’t understand why people want Carroll back, i think most fans agree that we should be playing 4231(433) . So where does Carroll fit into that?

If we are going to keep playing 442 longball then yeah get him 🙄

      (Quote)

  18. I agree, I don’t see Arsenal making top 4 on what I have seen so far .To be fair not many teams get much joy away to stoke ,that’s why our win there last season was so good and none of the top four managed that either. We need to concentrate on beating the teams around us as most the top guys are out of sight anyway. If we can take a big scalp along the way then brilliant . We were not fluid enough /quick enough yesterday but did improve in the second half , though I thought Chelsea sat back a little as well. I’m expecting a big improvement v Villa next week who look a poor side at the moment and Everton look very good ,so that’s gonna be a test too.

  19. We missed Tiote as well. He would have at least taken control of the midfield a bit better and offered more protection to the defense, which could have prevented the penalty but we were outclassed and out played and I don’t have a problem with that. What was perhaps worrying was how little goal attempts we had. Despite a few chances for Ba and Cisse there weren’t many clear cut chances. The set pieces were poor and like has been mentioned too many players had an off day. Cabaye taking poor corners etc. With Tiote missing and Cabaye looking travel weary we didn’t control the game enough. I think Cabaye just had a poor game and I don’t agree with what others have said about him not doing enough. he has been fantastic in other games.

  20. Matt. I think we’ll see 442 a lot as for what ever reason Pards rates it ,I do seem to remember it worked a treat against Manure 😀 .But I agree it’s not my favorote formation but may work on certain occasions.

      (Quote)

  21. Matt @ 19 yesterday was a prime example, it was clear as day that Cisse just wasn’t cutting it and if we had Carroll to bring on he would have caused them tonnes of problems.
I really don’t believe that Carroll = hoof ball I think he offers more than that, but thats just my opinion.

Chris @ 8 “get Debuchy” ?? I thought thats what we were supposed to have been trying to do 😕 and I don’t think Chelski would loan us Sturridge even though I don’t think it would work anyway

      (Quote)

  22. Beaten a good team and lost to a good team.. fair start to the season.. there is no real need to dismantle our team and formations to look for an answer to our loss. We have a good team but even good teams will be beaten. I will say one thing tho, I believe our players paid Chelsea too much respect, particularly in the first half…

      (Quote)

  23. If we go off what has been shown so far you would tip Swansea to win the league. 🙂 It will start to even out but the way Everton are playing is a cause for concern to clubs like Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and ourselves. If the Manchester clubs and Chelsea get the top 3 spots, there are a lot of clubs chasing that final champs league spot.

      (Quote)

  24. AMF thats right, I think Pardew said something like, ‘looking at the first two fixtures, you would have been pleased with 2 points, so 3 is a good result. If we beat Atromitos and Villa then I would say it has been a successful start to the season.

      (Quote)

  25. Dave @ 23 I agree mate i think Carroll is a great player and does offer alot more but i don’t think he fits into a 433 with the players we have. Would people start Carroll ahead of Cisse for example or put Cisse on the left and drop Ba altogether, I think £ 12 – 15 million is alot of someone to sit on the bench if not and i really don’t think Andy would want to come here unless he was a week in week out starter.

All that assuming we actually play 433 i agree Kim @ 22 it does work sometimes , i just think Ben Arfa is wasted out on the right in a 442 all his best runs come through the middle of the pitch i find. He is our most talented player and can cause the most problems for other teams look at Mata and Hazard for Chelsea yesterday with what they did to us.

      (Quote)

  26. Also im not trying to be negative with my comments i think we have started out well. We beat spurs who will be right around the top 5 and lost away to chelsea which along with the manchester clubs away are the most difficult games of the season i reckon . I just think with the players we have 433 would suit us more 😀

Swans are playing way better than Newcastle at the moment and if Laudrup keep the team in a winning stream/flow then they will challenge everyone…

We are struggling to keep the ball going when we attack.
Our defence is ok, but we are no thread going forward.

Pardew seems to have lost his balls tactic wise

  28. Read a great interview with Joe Hart in the sunday mirror today .He has nothing but praise for Andy Carroll and that he gets angry when people refer to him as a northen thug, He says he is far from it and actually quite a gent and he’s introduced him to many family members. He also sings his praises as a footballer. It’s worth a read and shows that even if some fans don’t rate his ability other pros do.

  32. Didn’t make a post yesterday just took a step back and read the Game On thread as posts came in. A lot from the neggies but there were some possies fighting back. To the neggies all I can say is remember where we were at the end of the 2009 season. We had two great chances probably the best two of the game in open play with the Cisse header and Ba toe poke but didn’t take either of them which would have made an interesting contest. How much Chelsea eased off we dont know.
If we had drawn the first two games and obviously remained unbeaten some punters would be well happy with two points. The fact is we have three points which is an very good return. Wins are what matter draw every game in the premier league and you are in the relegation mix.

      (Quote)

  33. If I was Carroll and I was below Borini in the pecking order I would be worried. Borini just looks not up to the speed of the premier league IMO. I think that is a clear indication that Rogers does not want Carroll. Also if I was Enrique I would be worried if I couldn’t get into that defense. It’s got to be the worst Liverpool defense I have ever seen. Man City should be taking advantage better.

  34. Allen has been a really good signing for them though, and I’ve always thought Shelvey looks a good prospect. Gerrard is finished, he is just playing like a water carrier now. 🙂

  35. Hard to believe it’s the same Liverpool who got cuffed last week by West Brom and Hearts midweek, funny old game ,I thought Citeh would slaughter them, just goes to show you can’t bank on anything in this league.

  36. Ice @48 ,The level of claptrap in the papers this window has been by far the worst I can remember . 🙄 .

  37. It seems like Rodgers does not like any of Dalglish’s big money signings apart from Suarez . Carroll ,Downing ,Henderson and Enrique all on the bench ,how much did that lot all cost . 🙄

  38. Axel ,I actually rather dislike Buck ,not sure why really ,he just comes across as a bit of a ******** to me .

  39. Ice – I know it’s going back a couple of articles but I forgot to give a double 😯 😯 about your post re Lpool loan of Sahin.
Yet another example that their wallet is bigger than there brains!!

I think people may have had slightly unrealistic expectation about yesterday’s game because of what happened last season. I not too disheartened by it, I mean were not going to go all season unbeaten and Chelsea away would be an acceptable loss. No disrespect to them but I’d be more disappointed if it was someone like Wigan or Southampton. It wasn’t a hiding and we kept going til the end. 2 wins in the next 2 will get us back on track.

Re signings. If we go back in for Debuchy I think well probs get him this time. Douglas is a toss of a coin I think and the younger striker I’m hoping will be Jordan Rhodes coz I could really see him and Campbell striking a deadly partnership…. We shall see ….

      (Quote)

  40. I just can’t believe how poor Man City have been though. I think its a bit like our game where we gave Chelsea more respect than we probably should have.

      (Quote)

  41. City need to man up here ,very sloppy today ,I think they thought they just had to turn up like. 🙄 😳

      (Quote)

  42. KIMTOON i think it does not help him when the press bigged him up last season but i think his man management needs worked on .Lets face it he hammered Carroll in the press and has only back tracked because he probably got a bollocking from his american boss . I will give him 6 months before the bindippers turn on him .

      (Quote)

  43. Axel, if Liverpool turn Citeh over today that’s a canny way to start winning the fans over.

Having said that, I still don’t like the guy in charge at Liverpool, don’t know why…cannot put my finger on it..

      (Quote)

  44. Just shows like… Our name means nowt to Man City and they just turned up and trounced us. They go to Anfield and look like a rabbit in the headlights. There is still that fear factor at Anfield somehow.

      (Quote)

  45. DJG of course their is a fear factor at Anfield , come on would you like playing their knowing your changing room is being burgled and all your stuff is being knicked. 😆

      (Quote)

  46. AXEL, What pisses me off is his attitude re the Carroll fee, he acts like we mugged him personally when he wasn’t even at the club at the time of purchase. He conveiniently forgets that Pool offered the fee we never demanded it . Then to compound it when discussing potential loan deals for Carroll he says no and Certainly not to NEWCASTLE ,like we are beneath him or something . I mean how disrespectfull about another club does he want to be .End of the day we did nowt wrong but accept a crazy OFFER which Pool would of also done all day long. As for our loan bid that was on the back of comments I heard him make regarding AC, something he’s happy to forget and now backtrack on.The blokes a lightweight who thinks he’s better than he is imo.

    AND 2.2 now TEVEZ 😆 , that’s better 😉

      (Quote)

  47. KIMTOON apparently the crowd roared him onto the field ,that alone makes it impossible for Rodgers to sell him without that lot hanging him high .

      (Quote)

  48. Liverpools defence is better at attacking than defending 😯 , that’s why they put 11 men behind the ball when they’re shitting it.

      (Quote)

  49. Axel ,they are desperate for him to do well to be fair to them ,if only to get a better price for him. 😉

      (Quote)

  50. When Liverpool pass it around and counter with pace they are a good side to watch but they are restricted to only a few spells per game like that now and they look shakey at the back under very little pressure. They are strong at home but I think they will struggle to get into the top 5 this season. Also they kind of depend on Suarez and if he gets injured or something they are not the same side.

      (Quote)

  51. Tell ye what Liverpool done ok and only because of Skrtel’s rush of blood they would have had 3pts, I wouldn’t write them of for a top 6 finish 😕
