No new incomings, maybe – Pardew

Pardew has been let down, like the rest of us.
So I see that Alan Pardew has today said that we might be done in terms of incoming players today.

That isn’t exactly great news is it?

I’ve been keeping my council throughout the window, acutely aware that the club are very capable of throwing the odd curveball when it comes to transfers dealings, which is why I’ve been pretty much silent on the whole transfer window malarkey as I like to form a judgement of the whole window AFTER the event as opposed to flitting between opinions throughout the window and as each day passes.

I’ve known since day one that qualification for the Europa League wouldn’t have a significant effect on our transfer dealings. Put simply, the money doesn’t really justify splashing out sums that deviate from the transfer policy that, until recently, has been lauded by fans of NUFC, fans of other clubs, journalists and ex-professionals alike.

However I have to say that should Alan Pardew’s words of doom turn out to be true (remember the APP – or Anti Pardew Police – are quick to point out the he is a liar) then I’ll be fuming.

First off, let’s hear what Pardew has exactly said:

“We’re watching the market,” Pardew told assorted journalists in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Atromitos tomorrow evening.

He added: “We know the one’s we’re watching. If there’s any movement on them, we may trigger ourselves. But the targets we have seem secure at their clubs.”

Now I’ll be quick to point out that Pardew has said things once or twice that haven’t come about previously.I remember when we weren’t selling Andy Carroll, then BOOM. Much like I remember no new incoming striker last January, until Papiss Cisse rolled into town a few days later.

It’s not over until it’s over if course, but if that is to be it then I feel sorry for Pardew, his coaching staff, and the players. All of them combined last season to propel us to fifth place in the table through a combination of hard work, graft, skill and togetherness.

The reward they’ve been given from the owner and his band of blubbers is shocking. After all that there has been no support whatsoever from above which makes you winder what the point is.

Now I, like the vast majority, am not expecting cash to be splashed here, there and everywhere, but I think we’ve gone to far the other way in this transfer window. If you crunch the numbers you’ll find our net spend is somewhere in the region of £3m, which is better than it has been for a while, but it’s still painfully low.

Still, as mentioned previously, there is time for additions to be made although it must be said that Pardew’s words are resonating about as soundly as a wet fart currently…

  2. I think Spurs have done a cracking bit of business selling Modric for around £30m and signing Dembele for £15m. Dembele is a better all round midfielder in my opinion plus it leaves them with £15m to buy themselves either the French goalkeeper or a centre forward.
    Very smart business.

Why can i say it because successful teams are based on stability not masses of new signings , so for me the most important thing was keeping what we have intact.

So far we have done that and until that changes neither will my opinions and as i said earlier no-one has strengthened significantly enough from last year.not to say we cant be up there come May

As for Europa we have a squad that granted may not be able to rest all its top players each game thats no different from lot of clubs.

But where as you feel some of our youngsters arnt good enough yet i disagree and think some are going to push their way into contention very soon and play a big part in our season.

We playing in Europe so we moving forward , we have a stronger squad than end of last year ..still moving forward

Still see us come May up there in mix for European places so consolidation of Europa League for a 2nd season will still see us moving forward
Just maybe not as quickly as you would like

But im not prepared to condemn or write us off after 3 games

  10. Backup Striker option: Jozy Altidore! Scored 15 goals for AZ Alkmaar last season, has scored 4 goals in their first four games this season, 22 years old, 6’1″, strong & young, still developing…

  11. SPYRO while i agree with you about stability and keeping our best players ,i dont agree with that no body has strengthened significantly . These last couple of days spurs with Adebayour and Dembele have added quality too their creative attacking ranks and Everton seem too have added some quality as well .Those 2 teams will be in the mix for Europe come the seasons end .

  12. spyro yr spot on.loads of signings doesnt mean success.look at liverpool last season.keeping the same team is what we want.look what they done last year with only 1 season together.we can only get better.cisse full season ahead and anita.takes time to build the right team

  14. I really had hoped for a CB AND MAYBE a striker , just don’t understand how they don’t see the urgent need for a decent CB with Saylor so injury prone.

  15. FANS Altidore is not technically good enough for the premiership , he has a first touch like a bull in a china shop , where he is now is his limit , Toivonen from PSV on the other hand has every sort of skill needed for the premiership but would need to be calmed down ,he is as off his heed as his Swedish international team mate Zlatan Ibrahimovich .

  16. We are incomparable to Spurs and Liverpool as their revenues are much higher than ours.
Everton are on our level. The last 4 seasons in a row they have made a profit in the transfer window.
So the big question is whether we would be happy to follow that method ❓
A lot of people seem to think we should both be keeping our big players and adding to them to show ambition. but which clubs in the league do that ❓
People mention how “even the mackems” are spending more than us, but conveniently ignore that it took them nearly two years to spend much of the Bent money and a year to spend the Henderson money.
They had one striker (Bendtner?!) for much of last year.
Also conveniently brushed aside is that teams like Arsenal and Tottenham have both also made profits this window.

No CB a disgrace. But our transfer policy is still a winner.

  18. Spyro/Dale – nobody is taking about loads of signings tho 😕 !!, simply saying strengthen were we are weak. Nobody wants to sell any of the players we have already and sign loads of new ones. Surely adding 2-3 players in the areas required – ie LB, CB and CF makes sense, doesn’t it?

  19. 15 mil for dembelle 😯 i bet guthrie has a better season than him.hes good but come on 15 mil.spuds wasting money like liverpool with torres money burning a hole in their pocket.all these teams will be fooked in 1 year or 2 with fair play rules 😛

  24. Dale – the problem that you have with that argument tho mate is that Debuchy, Douglas and LDJ (being the striker we were linked with) 😳
We just didn’t/wouldn’t meet the valuation Lille and Twente placed on the players 👿
Re Cisse, no I wouldn’t swap him for any of the other players mention. But we walked away from the Cisse deal and nearly lost him – again because we refused to meet the asking price. It was only because Frieburg bought another striker and wanted to offload Cisse and offered him to us that we eventually landed him. Cisse was a huge slice of luck, make no mistake mate.
Pardew wanted a CB in Jan and was chasing Tomkins when Frieburg rang – we were no longer chasing Cisse at that point, hence why it all went through so quick – coz they couldn’t believe their luck.

  25. Rhodes going to Blackburn for 8 million 😯 thats stupid money for that league .Ok the lads a goal scorer and i would of liked us to of took a chance on him ,but thats too much for a player from league 1 .

      (Quote)

  26. Axel
From what people had written, (could be wrong). The lad Rhodes IS a natural goalscorer…….but in league 1. He was nowhere near being a premier league striker though apparently, hence why no-one will spend the dosh. I hope he does well at Blackburn mind, especially after the luck they have had with Best. 😳

Mirror claiming Carroll ditched by #lfc and now considering future. Still think that’s the one to watch.

      (Quote)

  28. @Sharpy
don’t think they wanted rid of him like
they signed a replacement so reluctantly let him go

Agree with the premise that if went all the way back to last summer and Frieberg said 15Mill for Cisse I would still snap their hands off.
If we are signing players with a view to them having a sell on value surely we can budge a bit and just offset the profit we’ll possibly make on them in the future.
Only issue is where to draw the line.

  29. Can’t believe Carroll would go to West Ham ,not after saying he wants Euro footie like, Sounds like Pool desperate to get shot now they know we are out of the running.

  31. Seems Spurs are close to tying up Moutinho too.

Teams we were competing with continue to strengthen whilst we twiddle our thumbs.

Such a disappointing window that has developed the way I feared it would. We were unable to get rid of the likes of Simpson, Ranger and perhaps a big player so barely any funds were released. Utterly ridiculous.

Times like this I wonder where the merchandise, gate receipts and TV money goes?

  34. ST – the thing is tho, we should be looking at signings that will improve our squad – not ones that will make us the most profit.
The only people who have ever really made money in the world of football is the players, so if profit is what Ashley is looking for, he’s in the wrong game.

If Frieburg did not want to get rid of Cisse, why did they sell him to us then?! 😕

      (Quote)

  35. TV money was something like £45million this year. Yet we can only get £3-4million for players. I’m sorry I just don’t buy it.

This window is seemingly telling us all we need to know about life under MA. He has no intention to put any money into the club and is clearly paying off his loan with the TV money etc.

…Look at what people are clinging on to now, signing Andy Carroll on a loan to buy deal. A player that most can see no longer fits our style of play, unless we plan to revert back to lumping it long. Why?! Why do we need him? We don’t and to me it is nothing but a distraction. We aren’t chasing anybody imo.

I’m all for paying a fair price, but at what point does it just become an excuse to offer significantly less than what teams want in a bid to make it look like we are trying?

It just never adds up. Offer £9million for De Jong as we know Twente wanted £11, offer £4million for Debuchy as we know Lille wanted £6 etc…Before ending up with either a cheaper alternative, loan, or nobody at all. That’s not how a team with ambition operates. That’s not how a team with actual goals operates.

If the window closes and we don’t get a few through the door it will prove once and for all we are going nowhere under this regime.

  36. I will wait to see what happens by Friday night but after the season we had last year to not try and improve the team further beyond Anita is ridiculous.

  37. No there isnt much choice really, but if there was, who would rather have Walcott than Carol? Just thinking he can play on the wing or up front without a problem and would fit just fine into 433.

Of course probs get neither, just a thought though
