Ever since he signed for Newcastle on the 6th February 1998, Speed has been a cult hero in Tyneside and was adored by fans not only for his ability on the pitch, but for his overall attitude towards the club was. He would stay behind at training sessions and help out the youngsters and before going home he would sign autographs for everyone waiting, he was very much a crowd pleaser.
Alan Shearer said these words about Speed after his passing last year: “I am proud to have been his friend and will miss him dreadfully.”
Rob Lee also added this about Speed: “He wasn’t just a great player, he was a great person too. He was always great to be around, the life and soul of the party, and a good friend.”
This just outlines the mass of respect that his colleges and fans had for him, it also shows what a great lad he was.
I know it’s a day late, but with not much else being written about it I thought I’d just pen a quick article as a brief reminder for everyone. You’re sadly missed by many people in many parts of the UK and beyond Speedo and we hope Sir Bobby treat you well up there for your birthday.
Rest in peace.
