Why does Simmo get such a hard time from NUFC fans?

Hard times and hard lines for Simpson
I think it’s fair to say that the signing of Danny Simpson has been nothing short of a success since he swapped Old Trafford for St James’ Park during our Championship winning season.

Young, cheap, with relatively low wages I’d say Simpson has paid back his outlay ten fold in terms of what he has achieved at United (the REAL United, not the fake one from Manchester).

Yet seemingly this isn’t enough for some fans who see fit to castigate him at every opportunity. Now for sure there are better right-backs out there and arguably it’s a position we should have strengthened during the summer, but some of the headlines I’ve read (including this piece from Ed, which has inspired me to write this) are just pure waffle.

I mean is Vurnon Anita REALLY the best right-back at the club? Sure he seemed to play better at right-back when switched there in the absence of Simpson, but is less than one game really enough to be dishing out such lavish praise, especially when the player he has replaced through injury has been nothing short of outstanding since his arrival from Manchester United?

Danny Simpson has been a key component of our resurgence. He helped us out of the Championship, helped us stay in the Premier League and helped us qualify for Europe via a 5th placed league finish. Admittedly he hasn’t done that without mistake but being truthful you’d be hard pushed to find a player who hasn’t put a foot wrong at some point.

As I alluded to earlier, he’s not the best right-back the world has ever seen and I dare say there are better players out there, but he has rarely let us down when called upon and has been vital for us these past three seasons.

Surely that deserves a bit of respect?

  1. @Andy I might go down to Newcastle instead, or my student’s union might have it on you never know.

Or I could be on a night out so…. depends what I do on Monday!

@Kim cheers mate, I’ll bear that in mind!

Aye, could do. How long would it take to travel in? You should know that NUFC always comes before your social life 😡 . 😉

Trying to defend Simpson you just saying some stupid things. Pretending that the goal was HBA fault, it means that you really don’t know anything in football and tactically.
It is surely not a complete error of Simmo too, but in this occasion his initial place in the pitch is good but after that he must be more reactive when the long ball comes to go and try to block the cross. But Coloccini and especially Staylor was the most Incorrect in this action. they are just marking anyone in the box.
But for me Simmo is a honnest average right back in the league. But I can understand why he exasperates a lot of fans (and me to) is because of this ball control and he misses some simple pass at 3 meters. Furthermore if Benny gives him the ball, I don’t know why his first reflex is to put a long dead ball in the box instead of giving him back the ball. The long balls end with nothing almost all the time and that destroy completely our game. Exceptionnally Ba or Cisse are able to win 3 duals in the box and score from an impossible position. But if he can stop this dead balls and manage to give some good short passes, I think fans will stop slating him

  4. Strumpet – We’re debating the merits of Simmo here.
I don’t find it persuasive to bring Benny into it when your video clip shows some stinking defending by Simmo. I hope your not a real life defence lawyer. Anyway, deflecting the blame onto poor Benny, who was probably doing his best to track back after terrorising their defence by himself, is a bit harsh.
I’ve said earlier that in the spurs game we were lucky that Bale didn’t score from that free header he had when Simmo was caught ball watching.
I agree with Newkie that for some reason Simmo gets unfairly blamed too often, and I tend not to knock him too much. All I’m saying is lets not kid ourselves about him either. If we wanted to improve on our first 11, he’d be the first casualty.

  6. HBA39 – I reckon you’re in love with Benny. 😉 I really like him a lot, but I reckon you’re in love. Would you… you know let him, you know, like the fans would let Colo?

    @Solanostrumpet
“Trying to defend Simpson you just saying some stupid things.” That’s a classic, HBA39. 😆 You’re right about Simmo’s useless high punts in the general direction of the box too.

When I read your posts HBA39 I find I’m speaking a foreign language in my head. What is it? Sounds like Spanish to me.

    @Big Dave

I won’t give Aussie any slack until he’s big enough to admit he had a hissy fit.

For everyone who slated the scousers as being a disgrace over the Hillsboro disaster, including Toonsy, (this is not a vendetta against our blog master but he is often vocal about the scousers and how much he hates them) hang your heads in shame.

I seem to have been alone throughout this issue in supporting the fans over this.

    I’ve been proven right.

Don’t blame the Liverpool fans blame the police of the day!

An utter disgrace by the authorities!

Anyone wish to accept they called it wrong?

    I won’t hold my breath. 😯

  8. B&b – he has wanted as much for a long time. Every argument of his is geared towards supporting the Benny cause. As soon as he transfers away, we’ll hear no more from the bloke. Troy, I dont like the bindippers because they are elitist despite being no better than Spurs, Everton or us in recent years. They need a dose of reality. Re; hillsborough, life On mars springs to mind. Those liars should have their pensions revoked.

  9. Troyer – The establishment has been withholding information for nearly a quarter of a century. How does that happen when families have been searching so long for answers? The police, the politicians, and Kelvin McKenzie are an absolute disgrace.
I note the first thing you make of today’s news, Troyer, is that you’ve been proven right. 😯 I haven’t read the report. Were you mentioned?

    @B&B

I got a mention on News at Ten for the way I defended the good folk of Liverpool on this site whilst the ignorant bigots slated them.

They know who they are, it’s just whether they are big enough to hold their hands up.

I know you don’t like scousers but I don’t recall you blaming them for Hillsboro but many did.

Liverpool is a great football club and held in far bigger esteem than NUFC worldwide. Deservedly so IMO .

They now find themselves in a similar situation as us, fallen from grace and they will have to deal with it.

One of the greatest sights and sounds of football worldwide is the Kop singing NWA with their scarves held high.

    Great club!

    RIP HILLSBORO FALLEN!

  12. As much as I hate Liverpool as a club and a fair share of their fans, I’ve never disrespected them over the Hillsborough affair. Bit before my time anyway, so I don’t really have much of an opinion on it. The police, many politicians and the Sun, along with many other media groups are absolute bastards. No surprise there then.

HBA is a funny lad. I’m still stuck between wondering whether he’s a Frenchie (which would excuse the grammar/spelling) obsessed with the career of Benny and simply follows him from club to club, or whether he’s a Mackem trying to troll us (which would again, explain the poor English) 😉

Zoe-Good luck at Uni. Should be the safest part of Sunderland, can’t imagine many locals know where it is or even knew they had one. Don’t mention you write here though ❗ 😆

(Which looking back is actually in response to you at 117..!)
IS in response to someone (you) blaming Simmo for the Villa goal.
Maybe you should accept that you can’t blame Simpson for every goal at that in that instance there were a lot more culpable players ❓
Seriously, you can say “trying his best to track back” but the evidence is there that he wasn’t. 🙄

I’m sorry to make a massive assumption but I’m guessing you think Santon was better last season than Simpson ❓ If so, in my eyes you lose all credibility as a defenders job first and foremost is to defend. Which Simpson is better than average at.

I might give myself a Troy-esq disclaimer: IF YOU THINK SANTON WAS BETTER THAN SIMPSON IN THE SEASON 2011/2012 THAN I DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR VIEWS ON OUR DEFENCE

    I hate Liverpool
I hate how the media cream themselves over these ‘great European nights’
I hate Gerry and the Pacemakers
I hate how the camera pans the crowd to see them singing
    I hate Anfield
    I hate Steven Gerrard
I hate the banners in the Kop that rattle on about things nearly 50 years old
    I hate Liverpool fans
I hate Liverpool fans who are clearly glory supporters
I hate Phil Thompson, big nosed tw@t
I hate how nothing else matters to the big nosed dismissive tw@t
    I love Hicks and Gillett
I would love them even more if they put Liverpool out of business.
I hate how the world has to stop for Hillsborough, a tragic accident. Yet they shrug off Heysel, caused by themselves, and took them 20 years to apologise for!
I hate the excuse that Benitez has had no money to spend, nearly £300 million is pennies isn’t it? He bought rubbish, deal with it.
    I hate Gerrard
I hate whoever the commentator is on Channel 5! I think it may be Graham Taylor who less than a minute into the game mentioned those “special Europen nights”
    I hate Jamie Carragher, cheat.
I hate Rafa’s pink shirt, it clashes with his red cheeks.
I hate Sammy Lee. He looks like a burns victim.
If I think of anymore I’ll let you know

For me, defensively, the Simmo/Santon comparison is an open and shut case. Simpson is better, it’s backed up in almost every match as well as statistically. Also bearing in mind Santon plays the majority with Jonas (hardest working) and Colo (best defender) as opposed to Simmo who plays with Staylor or Williamson, and then Ben Arfa. I mean come on.

I do like Santon, he’s got great potential to exceed Simpson and he’s an exciting player to watch, far more exciting than Simpson of course. That being said, he’s an inferior defender plain and simple.

  19. To be fair Troy, I think his Hillsborough point is valid. He acknowledges that it was a tragic event, but it was an accident caused by incompetence. Heysel barely registers these days, yet it was caused by direct, nasty actions and arguably altered the shape of many clubs futures. (eg Oxford would have played in Europe)

      (Quote)

  20. @Newkie
Yeah exactly, Santon has the potential to be 10 x the player Simpson is. But especially last season, he’s just been nowhere near as good defensively

It was an accident though ❗
The disgrace is the lies and the covering up of the media/government/police and the accusations leveled against the fans.
To me it was still an accident though. It’s not like the police intentionally caused it.

    @Newkie & Trumpet

No I don’t believe for a second the police intentionally caused the disaster.

However, Toonsy needs to acknowledge his strange hatred for scousers has clouded his judgement over his remarks on Hillsboro.

He’s not the only one but I selected Toonsy cos he openly displays his hatred for all things Liverpool.

I think you’re being harsh on toonsy though. I don’t think he’s saying people shouldn’t remember Hillsborough, just that more thought should be given to Heysel as well?
    I’d agree with that anyway

Only ever has good stuff to say, model pro, celebrates like mad when we score and when we save and he got proper stuck in to that Mclean **** on Derby day 😀 People say he backs off, but he battered that pikey that day 😆

Would be interested to see what he/the club have to say if he does get sold/goes on a free, what he was demanding/if it was over how it was paid and all that malarky..not that either camp would be trustable like 😉

  30. The way I see it is that Simmo does a lot more right than wrong on the park and is a solid defender.. I am happy to have him in the team each week.. He very rarely goes missing when things get tough. Even the best defenders make positional errors and gaffs so it is a bit harsh to single out Simmo all the time. I hope he stays…

How does get ****** suit? 🙂

A tragic accident (which I said in the quote you dug out) is a tragic accident regardless of whether it was police incompetence or a great big meteor falling out of the sky that caused it.

Where did I say that the world SHOULDN’T stop to remember Hillsborough? Shpw me that direct quote as I have zero interest in anything else you’ll try and come out with, Go on, dig it up. What I was saying is that why is there no similar movement for those who tragically died at Heysel as a direct result of the actions of Liverpool fans inside the ground?

Seems they aren’t so quick to remember that.

    Which is my point entirely….
