Game on! Reading vs Newcastle United

Today Newcastle make the long trip daan Saaath to take on newly promoted Reading who are currently languishing at the foot of the Premier League table.

There should be a positive mentality going into the announcement that Pardew and Co have committed themselves to the clubs long term future by signing 8 YEAR deals – a move which was a apparently decided on the roulette table. Pards was reported as saying he is devastated it didn’t land on 36 instead, although no official reports have confirmed this and it’s extremely likely I may have just made it up in the pub.

We will also be buoyed by Papiss getting on the scoresheet again to compliment the in-form Demba Ba…who you just can’t see being dropped for this one as he was a few weeks ago, which definitely seemed to give him a bit more fire in his belly

As regular readers will be aware, I haven’t ever written the match thread so sorry if you were expecting the fantastic quality you are used to from this site and have instead stumbled across my inane ramblings. I only tend to write when I am wanting a whinge and that’s something I am pleased to say hasn’t happened been for a long time. I was mildly disgruntled at the lack of transfer activity and this is something most fans will feel as we go into this one missing Simpson and Ryan Taylor meaning someone, somewhere will be playing out of their preferred position.

We are also missing Captain Colossus after he suffered a setback, Tim Krul is still absent and Yohan Cabaye has a mouth infection so we will have to wait on him. It will be interesting to see who gets the nod if Cabs doesn’t make it….a lot of fans have been calling for Bigi so do we give him a start against bottom of the league and see what he can do or do we go with Tiote and Anita? Personally I would drop Cabaye fit or not to give him a kick up the backside…

Fortunately, we do have Perchinio whose preferred position is just being on the field…you wouldn’t see him throw his teddies out the pram even if you asked the lad to grab some gloves and get between the sticks, it’s a shame we can’t clone that boy…legend.

I hope you all enjoy the match, I will be slaving away at work but will update the team news as soon as I see it come up.

The bookies tend to think we are great value for an away win today…let’s hope they are right and we can see a Double Demba scoresheet! Howay the Lads!

Newcastle XI: Harper, Perch, Williamson, S Taylor, Santon – Ben Arfa, Bigirimana, Tiote, Gutierrez – Ba, Cisse
Subs: Elliot, Tavernier, Ferguson, Anita, Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi

Reading XI: McCarthy; Cummings, Mariappa, Gorkss, Shorey; Kebe, Karacan, Leigertwood, McAnuff (c); Hunt, Pogrebnyak.
Subs: Taylor, Pearce, Guthrie, McCleary, Robson-Kanu, Le Fondre, Roberts

  1. Sooooo now we are 3 points worse off than we were at the same stage last season, which isn’t too bad, but then last season we also went and took 13 points out of the next 15…anyone see us doing that on current form ?
Points wise it ain’t the end of the world, but feck me do we need to start performing soon, Howay Pards and players, start performing as we know you can. KTF

  2. Aussie sorry me old wombat but you can blame lack of signing because having someone push you for your starting spot is well known to make the players up their game. And there is some players that really do need to up there game.
I also believe that the lack of signing’s and ambition shown by the club sends a bad signal to the players that have ambition to continually get better. But sure aslong as your happy to watch us trying to tread water or fall away why worry 😆

  3. ANd a quick remark on Harper, it concerns Krul to. Why they always take 30 seconds to hoof the ball, instead of playing quickly sometimes and trying to be dangerous with counter attack.

      (Quote)

  4. HBA I agree at times they take for ever to release the ball, sometimes I think they’re waiting for the other team to get back in position. But I have seen Harper release it quicker than Krul.

  5. “The only way the two Dembas can work effectivly together is if we have good wingers delivering crosses or Benny plays behind them ,as it is it isn’t working ”

Exactly Kim, wingers that can get to the byline and get a good cross in.. Papiss and Demba would go goal crazy. That and Ben Arfa in midfield alongside Tiote.

      (Quote)

  6. Personally I still think the Dembas could work in a

    4-3-1-2.

Two holding mids, Cabaye slightly advanced, Benny free to roam behind the strikers and the two Dembas running the channels.

Said that was our ideal formation from the start-IMO it’s only a clean bill of health that pards is waiting on as he didn’t want to throw certain players-Anita, Bigi, Perch in at the deep end in their initial matches etc.

Also I know people are saying our first goal came out of nothing, but personally I thought it was a great lofted ball from Tiote. You can say it was hoof and hope but if you watch it it clearly isn’t. Willo intercepts the ball, passes to Tiote. Tiote looks up, see’s Ba’s run and plays it through to him. Granted it was an unbelieveable finish-however I remember Cabaye supplying a very similar ball-to Ba against Norwich, which Ba did brilliantly with and scored-and people raved about Cabaye’s pass.

Imo, Tiote deserves a bit of credit, because it was perfectly weighted if you ask me.

      (Quote)

  7. Newkie @457 Dead right , Tiotes pass was perfection ,that and Ba’s goal was our only real highlight ,but he defo knew where he wanted it to go ,it defo wasn’t a hoof and hope.

  8. JJ > Young Fergie looks promising on the left ,but what to do about the right ,I don’t want Benny stuck out on the wing he needs to be in the middle .Jonas also needs to stick to dmf where he does a good job for us .

  9. Well, I don’t blame Pardew for playing players out of position.
I don’t blame our players for not putting in good enough performances.
I do, however blame FATTY FUCKING TIGHT-ARSE for not spending enough money in the transfer window.
I’s plain for all to see we’re short in defence. This has a domino effect on the rest of the team. If we’re short in one area the rest of the side suffers by being shifted about to fill gaps in the squad.

If we’d bough a quality CB and FB in the transfer window I very much doubt I’d not be whinging on about shite performances now.

Biggest problem at NUFC is Fatboy’s reluctance to build on success by investing appropriate amounts into the first team.

My opinion. Sure others will disagree. Could I give a fuck? No.

      (Quote)

  10. NEWKIE @457………….457 😯

I think that was the best pass I have ever seen from Tiote. That one pass and that one goal. 🙂

      (Quote)

  11. How about and it’s just a suggestion so don’t all jump on me like. If peiters looks fit and good we go in for him and put him at LB and move Santon to RW as he started off as a rightsided attacker at Inter until he got moved to FB. He’s got pace a plenty maybe it could be the soloution ,thoughts? . RB is sorted Simmo or Anita just leaves a CB or 2.

  12. KIMTOON

Every time we are linked with Pieters he always seems to be injured. It’s happened more than once, or to be a coincidence.

      (Quote)

  13. Aussie ,We were so lucky yesterday it was only a wonder save from Harps in the last couple of mins from Mcleary that kept us in the game ,what with the handball too we were very lucky imo.

      (Quote)

  14. Yes it could work because Santon cuts inside onto his right foot a lot. I would rather we got someone like Baines but that ain’t gonna happen.

      (Quote)

  15. Ive said it before, and ill have to say it again, 442 with cisse and ba isnt working, we were absolutely pap yesterday and were lucky to get a point against one of the worst teams in the league, and in my opinion we havent played well all season. Also in my opinion Ba and Cisse cant play together in a straight 442, unlike last season when they played together perfectly well in either a 4231 or 433, where Ba occupied a wider role. I know its not all about formations but there is no-one linking our midfield and strikers at the moment, and therefore we are not keeping the ball and not creating any chances and none of our attacking players can get into the game, the only time we ever look like getting forward is when HBA dusts a couple of players. I dont know what Pards is going to do to turn this round, but now that Ba is banging them in its going to be harder to convince him to play wide when he clearly doesnt want to, but whats the point of Ba scoring goals if the teams not winning! Over to you Pards

      (Quote)

  16. Agree Kim, was probably the worst game I have seen since Pardz has been in charge. But……I just can’t buy into the lack of signings as the reason for what is going on… The lack of signings doesn’t cause Benny to not put a foot out and stop the cross that lead to the first goal.. It was the lack of urgency and commitment. I want signings as much as the next fan but I don’t believe in using it as an excuse.. it’s a cop out. We have 11 players on the park.. many of whom are playing well below their best.. .that is where the problem lays imo.

      (Quote)

  17. Kim how about trying Jonas out on the right 😯 thats what I can never get my head round we have Jonas who is right footed winger but we have never tried him there 😥 so if he can hug the left hand touch line but has to come in to use his favoured right foot well why not give him a go on the left then he might be able to whip a cross or 2 in ? he’s can’t be any worse than Oba .

      (Quote)

  18. Aussie as I said earlier but you failed yet again to respond 😉 maybe the players are below par because they know the squad is so thin that they’ll still get playing next week. any pro footballer will tell you they thrive on competition as it keeps them on their toes because if they drop their game someone is there to take their place > So would you agree with that or disagree ??

      (Quote)

  19. Aussie ,could be a few are into their own hype after last season or maybe a bit pissed off we didn’t sign some reinforcements who knows 😕 All I know is we ain’t firing on all cylinders ,look flat and our defence is a mess, and we have two first class forwards getting no service what so ever and one of the best amf players in HBA stuck out on the wing. 🙄 🙁

      (Quote)

  20. Here’s a question. Does anybody think we’ve been missing Simpson? Whoever has played there has been of similar quality, and/or better going forward.

      (Quote)

  21. I read it BD 🙂 I agree with you but I didn’t reply because you didn’t ask a question of me 🙂 🙂
However, we have a full list of players, drop the ones who are not playing well. I’d rather see young Fergie giving it his all rather than Benny’s half arsed performance yesterday. I will add tho, that Benny has been one of our better players this season. My point is, drop them if the aren’t putting in the graft.. it did BA no harm..

      (Quote)

  22. Dave ,yeah I considered that too but Jonas seems to have a flack playing as a winger and was just trying or thinking out load re,Santon really .but sure I love Jonas as you know . 😉

      (Quote)

  23. Kim @ 474 a couple of players namely Krul and Cabaye came out and stated publicily that we needed to keep our best players and add quality players to the team but they have seen us shift a few 1st teamers out and only bring 1 in so im 100% sure that they wouldn’t be pleased.

DJG yeah I think we’re missing Simmo 100% so who has played there that has been consistently as good as or better ??

      (Quote)

  24. BIG DAVE
The way I see it, it doesn’t really matter that Jonas is right footed because he is like a dribbler of the ball and a ball winner. He has good close control and short passes etc. He has side foot technique and he doesn’t really hit long accurate passes very well anyway. Ferguson on the other hand can drop a shoulder and deliver a long range pass.

      (Quote)

  25. Kim some just don’t rate him and that’s their choice but I don’t agree with them I do think he has lost a bit of sparkle lately but then he is playing out of position so how can anyone fairly write him off when we have never seen him in his natural position ❓ I do agree that Santon might be good as a right winger and I wouldn’t be against him getting a go at it

      (Quote)

  26. BIG DAVE
Well for starters Anita looked 100% better than Simpson, Perch I would say has been maybe not as good, Tavenier is young but he looks good there I think and he gets forward and passes well. He defended well considering Taylor and Collo were missing so it was harder than normal for him. I think he should be schooled to replace Simpson as he looks more comfortable on the ball and gets forward more.

      (Quote)

  27. DJG
I haven’t missed Simpson for me he fifth choice behind these in any order you want Anita Tavernier Perch and Raylor

      (Quote)

  28. Dave ,Yeah agree on that,I like to see it in a cup game maybe just to see if it could work really.
Also Re Pards and the England job ,makes you wonder doesn’t it about the 8yr deal ,we know MA likes to make a buck like and there would be a pretty penny in compo there . 😉

      (Quote)

  29. DJG I have seen Jonas deliver some decent long range passes with his right 😉 as for Shane well as I have been saying for over a season he is a good natural LW that can hug the touch line and deliver crosses, but some still want him to be played as a LB 😯

      (Quote)

  30. So if Anita is 100% better why is Perch getting started at RB ahead of him ? I agree Anita is decent at RB but I haven’t seen him consistently doing better at RB to say he is better ❓ As for Perch decent DMF but I would prefer not to see him anywhere near the back 4

TLR if you honestly believe that Simmo is 5th choice behind them I wont even waste my time 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  31. The back four on Thursday should be Anita Tavernier Perch and Santon. We cannot risk Williamson and lets pray nothing goes wrong with Santon

      (Quote)

  32. [email protected] Absolutely spot on. Anita was a must to start yesterday, had me baffled that one.. 🙄

      (Quote)

  33. Toby ,we might need Willo in there as that line up is proper short on height on the right side . Anita though good is 3″ shorter than the injured Simmo andTavs is 31/2 ” shorter than Saylor ,whilst Willo is 3″ taller than Saylor and better placed to deal with crosses. In fairness who ever we put out it’s a patch up now and we should never be in this situation ,it’s beyond a joke now having 3 of your regular back 4 all out. 👿

      (Quote)

  34. I think Bordeaux are quite direct and strong in the air so Williamson needs to get his Willi in gear and not have one of his weak as water nights.

      (Quote)

  35. Did you see when Pardew said Harper had earned his weekly pay and he would buy him some fish and chips on the way home. 🙂 I think he should buy him some longer fingers. 😛

      (Quote)

  36. A little interesting titbit for you all . The top three players total distance travelled for the entire game yesterday .

    Reading >Karacan , Leigertwood ,Shorey.

    Toon> Jonas , Tiote ,Perch.

total distance travelled each team . Reading 54.59 miles

    Toon 52.47 miles

I did say that I thought Jonas was up and down like a goodun all game 😉

  37. Terrible to watch. Sad to see how poorly we played in the first half again. Even some of our quality players are struggling. No cohesion in the team. Ba was a life saver again. The defense is a shambles right now. Are you watching this Llambias? What has happened to Cisse? He looks like he doesn’t know what a football is let alone what to do with it. Very disappointed in his effort but the game definitely got away from us most of the time yesterday. If we play like this against Man U it could be very bad indeed. Hope Collo and Saylor can come back quickly. We have no anchor back there or leadership and it is showing badly.

      (Quote)

  38. Man U will be even harder to play now after being beaten by Spurs. How are we going to put a decent defense on the pitch unless Collo or Saylor or both can play? Perch is not a CB and never will be. That has been shown time and again and mostly against poor sides. He doesn’t play fullback well either. Bring Anita on at RB and pray Tavernier can play CB beside Willo I suppose but it won’t be pretty. This looks like a very difficult patch indeed for Pardew. I hope he’s staring daggers at Llambias every chance he gets. He’s been asking for a CB for 2 years now.

      (Quote)

  39. well maybe its time for Ferguson to start on the Left against Bordeaux with Anita on the right , Anita can cross and is a good passer of the ball . With Pardew telling them get the ball into the box as often as possible . I would then start with Ba and HBA given a free role and hope Cabaye is able too play . One thing the French lads will be fired up for that game and want to show the French national team boss they are good enough to be picked .

      (Quote)

  40. TLR-You’d have a combined central defence of about 6ft 😆

    😉

Anita should be starting RB though. Tav’s not got me confident yet, he got skinned a good few times while he was on and although Benny should have done better as well he needed Tiote to clean up for him.

      (Quote)

  41. [email protected] could agree more regarding Perch. That’s why for the life of me I couldn’t understand Pardew leaving Anita out yesterday. In fact the whole right side would have been stronger with Anita in there. Also as another blogger pointed out earlier, if Anita cannot get in the starting line up in front of Perch and young Bigi then why did we pay big bucks for him ? Pardew big mistake.

Positive is that HBA is available again for europe, negative is that Pardew porobably won’t play him.. 👿

  42. Don’t forget our next league game after Manure is the scum, jeepers what a time to face an in form Fletcher 🙄 👿

      (Quote)

  43. Kim the next few games and what we get from them could be very important to our season, so we need to pray that we can get most of our 1st 11 back, I really don’t have much hope in us picking up much if we don’t have Colo or Saylor as a main man in the back 4

      (Quote)

  44. Dave ,Agree mate and at the risk of sounding like a broken record ,there was plenty of us predicting this was always a possibility should we fail to bring in defensive cover 🙄 .It’s bloody unforgivable really it’s not as if we as a club are flat broke like. It wouldn’t of taken a kings ransom to get someone decent in i’m sure. Lose just one of your back four and it causes disruption but 3 is a disaster ,there is noone can convince me that we have like for like for all four positions ,we clearly don’t ,well not to the standard required anyway.

      (Quote)

  45. Kim there was also plenty saying that we were alright with what we have, and saying that Good etc would step up funny enough I haven’t heard owt about Good from he came here. The only one that looks as if he will play a decent part this yr is Bigi and even at times you can still see he is a bit green but looks good so far. Tav has done ok but I think it’s important that when they do play it’s in with 9 or 10 1st 11 player that way he will feel more comfortable and at ease as he knows he has ones around him that can cover for any small mistakes

      (Quote)

  46. Wonder if Pard’s could convince Ashley to sign a defender up thats out of contract some where . We really have hit the bottom of the barrel and need something out of the blue to happen , surely somewhere their is a decent freebie to be picked up on a short contract untill January .

      (Quote)

  47. Dave ,Exactly 1 or 2 newbies at a time not chucking them in the deep end and shattering confidence.

Axel > I can’t think of any defenders out of contract of note can you. 😕

      (Quote)

  48. KIMTOON no but then again i haven’t looked on the internet their is bound to be a list somewhere 😆 i do know that Drenthe hasnt got a club yet but he is a full back and a bit of a twat apparently .

      (Quote)

  49. Axel > Thing is we need someone who can command the backline well ,whilst Colo / saylor are out ,I don’t think Willo ,Tavs or Perch are suited to that job. We could put Jonas in the back four ,he does it for the Argies and does vocalize plenty to the players ,I saw that first hand yesterday. 😉

      (Quote)

  50. Axel @ 508 the thing that pisses me off is that we get somany people saying how much of a good job Jabba is doing at the club etc etc thats all good that we are being run well on the finance side but if we don’t do it on the pitch we’re fuked because we are a football club after all and its how we do on the pitch that really counts. So I can’t see how anyone can say we are well run now that we’re 1 or 2 players away from a crisis, and the next few games are not easy, and if we don’t pick up many points and start dropping backwards it’s hard to kick on and start and keep climbing.

      (Quote)

  51. Lads-Just a thought about Anita. His wife has just given birth (correct?) So he may well have had a few sleepless nights. I know he’s a professional but there are bigger things than football (apparently, I wouldn’t know)

I just don’t think its something that people should be banging on at Pards about, presumably there was a reason he didn’t play and that, coupled with the fact he’s new to the country and will want to settle his family-could be one of them 😉

      (Quote)

  52. Kim-Aye, you can hear Jonas shout “Davide” in plenty of matches in TV so if you were close up that wouldn’t surprise me 😆

      (Quote)

  53. Disappointing result but worse performance. Only thing id say is we r only 3 points off 4th and we have come no where near producing our top form. Challenge is for Pards is to get the players into top form and getting a few more wins. I have every faith he will.
We have ran the risk in not getting a cb in and unless we get Colo back fit i think we will struggle at the back.
