  1. Yep. Lack of cover in defence, no competition up front and midfield out of form / in wrong positions. Good read Aussie, you should fire a few more in mate 😀

  2. I disagree with Shamrock!

In all seriousness, good article, agree with most of it.

However-and I know we were proper gash vs Reading, but did you think it was the worse performance in a few seasons, in all honesty? I dunno, I honestly could think of a fair few where we were worse-and I don’t just mean the various hammerings we’ve had off Spurs, Fulham and WBA. Although it is annoying now knowing how well we could play and then failing to do it. Before we were just a shit footballing side 😀

  3. Also just a word on Santon-he’s really improved his actual defending and is much less reliant on Jonas these days it seems. Great stuff, if we can just figure out what to do with him in the opposition half/box we’ll have the complete package on our hands..

And all this at 21 , great stuff 😛

  4. Nowts each at City. But that doesnt tell the true story a better reflection of the game would be 3-3

  5. Liked your last article Sham (except the Souness point.. it would be like comparing Hughton,s with his season in the Championship to Sir Bobby’s imo – we’re in a completely different world to the Souness days)

    I think we’re over-complicating things:
    1) Four first teamers (Krul/Simpson/Colo/Tiote) injured.
    2) Two key players performing way below their standards (Cabaye/Cisse)

It’s no surprise we’re not playing well, which other club would be?
I think Pardew’s tactics have been highly questionable this season, however it may be just reflective of how he doesn’t rate our back up defenders much, three defensive mids against Reading suggests he wants the players to grind out a clean sheet and hope for a piece of individual magic. Every interview he seems to have a dig at Ashley about not making defensive signings.

      (Quote)

  6. Anyone else optimistic for the Man Utd game? If we have Colo and Tiote playing I think we can beat them. Evans is likely to be out so they have a youngster, and the severely worsening Ferdinand/Evra in defence.

  7. I think Van Persie is on fire and our movement is not good enough to contain Manure. Obviously would love to see us get something just of it, just not hopeful!

  8. Aussie ,good read and I would agree with most of your points on the players. We should give it a slightly wider view though as in my mind I feel a few players are hacked off over the lack of players in , in particular the areas we needed to strengthen . It’s no secret that Several of our best players came out in the summer expressing the view that we had to hang on to our best players and also add some quality too. Whilst we have indeed kept everyone of note the owner & co have badly let down the squad who worked so hard to get us into 5th and Pards too for that matter. Given all that is it any wonder they might feel a bit deflated by the lack of intent to push on by MA &co. Factor in the long playing time with the Euros too for some players and it may take some time for them to shake off these feelings . Hopefully as injuries improve and the mood lifts we’ll have some better fayre on offer.
I want to see us have a right good go at Man utd on sunday , we are at home and they are piss poor at the back and we should really exploit that with a more adventurous line up imo. HWTL 😀

  9. Personally I think the drop in form is down to the change in training schedules where some players are doing warn up and warm down sessions around the midweek games while other players have to focus there training intensity for the weekend games. The impact I the Europa league isn’t really about the extra games, if say more so it’s about the fragmented nature of our current training patterns.

  10. Right, third time lucky..

Reckon WBA away two years ago, just before Hoots got the sack was our worst. Maybe it stands out because he got the sack the match after, but it was such a bad performance from everyone. Guthrie kicking the ground instead of the ball, feigning injury and then losing it to Odemwingie who made Staylor and Super s(l)ol look like clowns before netting. We were terrible the whole way through and didn’t even deserve the goal we got at the end. At Fulham at least we had a good first half…at Spurs, well, I don’t think we touched the ball enough to rate any of our own players, they just destroyed us 😆

  11. Solano-I’m tired of being optimistic, even though we should be on paper I agree with Sham, VP will trouble us and we’ll probably get hammered 😥

  12. Could it be that us the fans have changed , after last season’s heroics our expectation levels have risen ? lets face it , we are not playing well but picking up points , when that happened last season every one was still happy . It would of been different if we had less injury’s but the fact is their is points on the board and we all know their is more too come from the boys .

      (Quote)

  13. Shamrock ,That’s my only concern RVP 👿 We need to go for it and come out all guns blazing get a couple of early first half goals . RVP will save they’re arses so many times this season it will be like Arsenal MK2. I think Arsenal look a much more rounded team now he’s gone ,they have goals from all over now .

      (Quote)

  14. Axel- I agree with that too. Let’s face it, for a while last season we were playing the best football in the league, the best we’ve played since SBR. It was bloody beautiful stuff, but that combined with our 5th place finish has changed expectations. Now we’re back to the grind…

      (Quote)

  15. I would say one of the worst games I have witnessed was last day of the season V Villa in our relegation season ,absolutely gash ,no heart no desire no guts or fight ,they had it in they’re hands to save us and they just didn’t even try, and as for bloody Duff .

  16. Good read Aussie, thanks for the fresh crack mate.

I think Shamrocks evaluation is right, but I think there are other factors at play as well. I think injuries haven’t helped and all in defence. I think our inactivity in the window hasn’t helped and for some strange reason, Pardew is desperate to play 4-4-2, which is so disjointed for us and doesn’t seem to allow our creative players to play at their most dangerous.
I’m not trying to be unrealistic by wanting us to go out and turn teams over by 3 or 4 goals every week, but what I would like is to see us play with more confidence, look like the better team and win games comfortably, rather than hanging on to a point or win.

Points wise we are we are doing fine, and the great news is we know we can improve. But IMO we do need to get players in in Jan.

  17. Wow man the rich boys and England’s finest Man City are getting absolutely battered at home by a Dortmund team filled with home grown talent from there own academy. Well impressed.

If it wasn’t for Joe Hart it could have been 0-5 to Dortmund… 😯

      (Quote)

  18. @Axel
I fear last time came a season or two too soon for us.
We are much closer to Everton than Spurs, so should look at how there seasons fluctuate both during and between differing seasons.
Yeah a new centre would have helped but nonetheless our squad is some way from being as strong as we’d need it to be to consistently, without question, top 6.
Performances have been shoddy, but it’s been a decent enough start.
Aim should be: 15 home wins
    5 away wins.
Giving 60 points. (obviously 4 wins 3 draws away etc is the same)
But 50 points upwards depending on injuries is understandable given our strength in depth.
Frustrating but again, we are in Everton’s league atm.

      (Quote)

  19. At the toon, the owner has let the players and the manager down by not recruiting in the summer. The injuries, which are part of the game anyway, and the added Europa league games have only exacerbated the situation.

At the same time, the majority of the performances this season have been extremely poor.

      (Quote)

  20. Kim, Arsenal still can’t defend though! I agree the only way to take Manure on is just go for it. Cluj opened them up a few times by just attacking them directly. Lets not forget Rooney either. He loves a goal against us 👿

      (Quote)

  21. mm , there is real pressure on Citeh to do well this year they only just won the PL and the owners ,press and public will be expecting more of the same given all the cash thrown at the team, for them anything less is a backward step now. Christ and we think our expectation levels are high 😆

      (Quote)

  22. SolanosTrumpet, I think we are light years away from “Everton’s league” at the moment 🙁 Have you looked at the league table recently and forgotten the battering they gave us a few weeks back ? Our laborious anti-football will get us absolutely nowhere until Pardew get’s the team back firing on all cylinders again.

      (Quote)

  23. [email protected] ,would have to agree with that ,they are much more fluid at the moment but curiously I think we have the better players when on form.

      (Quote)

  24. Kimtoon-Aye, if we’re going that far back then half of that season would be up there, but that Villa match. Fuck me that was heartless 😥

      (Quote)

  25. [email protected], I really hate Man City because of the whole money situation. I’m watching Dortmund absolutely batter them on there own turf, it really could have been 0-6 on clear cut chances.

I suppose it only goes to show that throwing big money around doesn’t always guarantee success. On the contrary, a manager who tactically knows his stuff, and can motivate his team can achieve quiet a bit.

Man oh man…unbelievable penalty for Man City…how freaking lucky can you get… 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  26. Lightyears away from Everton? Woah now, we’re not Sunderland 😆

I’d take our first 11 over their first, any day of the week. That being said, their squad, their youth, their commitment and attitude are all to be admired and desired right now…

      (Quote)

  27. Now now Newkie…read the full statement mate….. 😉 “I think we are light years away from “Everton’s league” at the moment “… 😉

      (Quote)

  28. Newkie ,The players and manager have said they looked at what we did last season and it inspired them ,it’s just a pity it hasn’t inspired us 🙄

      (Quote)

  29. Newkie – your philosophy confuses me but makes me laugh at the same time. I’ve never know the ‘yes we’re shit, but we’ve been shiter, approach. I get the impression most of us would be raging if we finished 4th bottom this season but I’d imagine you posting something like ‘yeah, but a couple of seasons ago we were relegated’ 😉

MM – I agree we are some distance off Everton at the mo. But I’d agree with Kim, in that I believe we have a slightly stronger squad of players than Everton, when we are playing well and in the right formation. We think we have invested wisely in players, but Everton have been brilliant on a far tighter budget.

      (Quote)

  30. I feared this would be a tough season for Pardew, and it’s proving to be so too so far. Hope he can get things back running smoothly again, cos we’ve been really poor for the majority of games so far this season.

      (Quote)

  31. Sharpy, I tend to agree with you mate, I’m just seriously peeved at the laborious cat and mouse defensive football which we seem to churn out…

      (Quote)

  32. MM – I’m with you mate, I can’t stand the likes of Man City, Chelsea and PSG who get super rich owners and spend crazy money. It’s destroying the game and transfer market and I hate the idea of buying success.
I honesty believe we are doing it the right way, regulating our spending, but where Chelsea spent £20m on one player, we should have spent that much on another 2 or 3.

      (Quote)

  33. Aussie 😯 😯 you can string sentences together and make sense 😕 who did you get to pen this for ye lad 😆 😆
I can’t believe it but I kind of agree with most of that but I still think we’ll disagree on new signings and how it has impacted on our season so far.

      (Quote)

  34. MM – I know what you mean about our defensive performances, and some people have made mention of the 3 defensive midfield players.
To be honest, playing with 3 in midfield last season worked fine, and still could, if played in the right way. For example, if we played with Cabaye/Tiote/Anita across the midfield, all 3 can both defend and provide support in attack.
It would mean that, if we were under pressure then we should be solid and double up for the full backs. But when we are on top in a game, one or two of them can push on and support Benny, Ba and Cisse.
But that’s all down to the mentality of the players, and that comes from the manager and coaching staff.

  35. Munich-Appologies, I didn’t notice the quotation marks 😉

Sharpy-Eh, what gave you that impression? Is this re my comment at 17? 😕

      (Quote)

  36. Newkie – comments from 2 through to 17 (with the exception of 3). With quotes such as:
‘I know we were proper gash v Reading but we’ve played worse in the last few season’.
Its funny coz you’re not wrong but I’ve never known that kind of optimism. 😀

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy-Ah right, I was gunna say if it was about talking about relegation that was just a discussion about our worst matches 😆

That comment was made in relation the the article-where Aussie said it was the worst match he’d seen in a few seasons. I’m just surprised anyone could think that, I know the aussies aren’t a bright bunch, but I’d expect some fellow brits to remember… 😆

It wasn’t so much blind optimism as an interest into how the fans perception of football has been changed by success. Not that i’m having a go at anyone for it, I can understand it.

Anyway-yeah, I like to be positive about my football. If it all turned to shit here then there really would be nothing to look forward too 😆

      (Quote)

  38. Newkie – I think Pardew is slightly fortunate he can draw a positive from ‘team spirit’, and he’s right to a degree. To pick up points when were not playing well, and to come back in games were we are not playing well or are a goal down, then come back and get something from the game is a huge positive. But we are a better team than that, and need to start proving that.

My most annoying games from memory was Fulham last season. To play so well in the first half, then get demolished the way we did in the 2nd really sickened me.
Worse still, from a personal point of view, was WBA the season before (last game of the season). It being one of the few games I got to that season, being 3 up and taking our foot off the pedal the way we did still pisses me off writing about it!! 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  39. Sharpy-Aye, i agree with that completely. In a strange way its nice that we’ve picked up points playing utterly shite because it shows what we can do, with a full compliment of players…just hope that comes along quickly. I know people have gone on about our luck, yes we’ve rode it. But FFS we’ve had enough badluck to last 10 clubs, so it’s about time we bloody reap the rewards of Karma 😉

I know what you mean about those two matches-but because we had such good halves where we played decent stuff I didn’t count them. They were probably more frustrating, but we did at least play some good football. That 3-3 was gash as if we’d won 3-0 it would have been a nice bit of justice to the baggies destroying us on their turf. Instead they came away, essentially, with a win 👿

Still, we paid em back last season, 3-1

  43. Thanks for the feed back everyone 🙂 Even Big Dave managed to give me a back handed compliment  And this was after I stirred him up by saying that I wrote a piece on how well Ashley and Dekka are doing with the club. 😆 😆 I think he said that he was hoping to be at work when the article was posted 😉
Anyway, I think we have a combination of factors that are holding us back. Injury, lethergy and a drawn out transfer window are all certainly playing their part… I hope we get all our ducks in a row soon and start to play some good footy again.. 😉

      (Quote)

  44. Good read Aussie, who knew you could put words together to make sentences 😉
I think it could be a variety of reasons, injuries, players in poor form, possibly players pissed off because of lack of team strengthening, wrong tactics or system by Pards, players positions…though that shouldn’t stop a pro footballer being able to pass a ball 10 yards to a player on the same team, all teams go through ruts in a season, maybe we’re getting ours out the way early?….whatever the reason/reasons, I hope it’s sorted soon, starting with tonight and Manure at the weekend.
    Howay the Lads 😀

      (Quote)

  45. Morning. I pretty much agree with Richie @59.
But feel our biggest problem is constantly playing this hopeless 4-4-2.
The Lads proved last season that they work better in a either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-1-1-2. But AP refuses to go back that way. Why ???
HBA is wasted out on the right, and despite the great effort he is putting in, he will soon get disillusioned. If we don’t start and play to his and the teams strengths, then I can see him, Ba n Cabaye leaving next summer.

      (Quote)

  46. I’m not placing ALL the blame at Pardews door, because of the crazy injury situation at the back.
I also think the lack of signings and general lack of ambition shown by the board, has had a negative impact on certain players.
I wouldn’t blame them for thinking they were signed under false pretenses.
Hopefully we can turn a corner this week.
    Howay the Lads.

  47. Cheers Richie, I think that is the nicest thing you have said to me 🙂 well the first 3 words of the first sentence any way 🙂 🙂
I think Pardz is playing it safe with our formations and is trying to get point in the bank early in the season. If we do bank some hard earnt points I think we will start to see some more expansive football. Maybe……….

      (Quote)

  48. Richie your spot on and I agree that lack of transfers apart from weakening us could have made the players pissed off a bit.
