Have Wonga wandered into a storm?

What does this have to do with Newcastle?
With the ink still drying on the four year sponsorship deal between Newcastle United and “digital finance company” (PR spin) Wonga, the reaction has been varied to say the least.

However most of the ire has not been directed at the club, at least not in terms of football anyway, and instead we have a lot of people jumping on some form of moral bandwagon regarding what a business should and shouldn’t do.

They see Wonga, and presumably other such companies, as nothing more than parasitic loan sharks intent on causing misery and preying on the financially weak. Not too dissimilar to what banks do really, and they’ve not exactly been the choirboys of the financial world have they? Perhaps the values are different, but the principle is the same.

I’m no great fan of companies such as Wonga so I don’t use them. I’m lucky enough that I’ve never had to consider using them and I hope things stay like that. However not everyone uses them because they have to as a means of last resort which seems to be glossed over in all of this. There are after all some people who just can’t wait to have that TV, or those that use it responsibly.

Anyway, I’m not here to preach. People will use then when they need/have to and that is why they are still here. I’m just wondering whether Wonga bitten off more than they can chew when it comes to this particular deal?

The decision to change the name back to St James’ Park was a wise one that has softened some of the blow although I remain sceptical as to why they’ve done that. Perhaps it was thrown in to the deal? Who really knows other those involved?

What I have been shocked at though, more than anything, is the reaction from the press. I knew some people wouldn’t like dealing with Wonga, but why have the press got such a bee in their bonnet about it all of a sudden? I don’t remember so much coverage when they agreed a deal with Hearts or Blackpool?

No we have reporters speaking to financial wizards and religious clerics and asserting the fact that a company such as Wonga, that charges interest, is against Sharia Law and that somehow out Muslim stars such as Cheik Tiote, Hatem Ben Arfa, Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba may well refuse to wear the shirt. Incidentally I assume Virgin Money, which also charges interest by the way, is above Sharia Law?

It’s even been mentioned that former West Ham and Tottenham striker Frederic Kanoute refused to wear a shirt at his club at the time, Sevilla, because the sponsor was gambling firm “888” which goes against his beliefs. Incidentally his protest didn’t last long as you can see by the picture although he was excused from their publicity campaigns.

It doesn’t end there though. We have MP’s commenting on it and even suggestions that the league may step in to stop it, which would be interesting to say the least and would open up a whole new can of worms. If they ban one, then how about the rest, like the gambling companies for example? How about alcohol companies whilst we’re at it?

Those shouting loudest about this are the ones that haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory previously and I find it quite ironic that some have chosen to get the soapbox out for this one. It’s a name on a shirt at the end of the day, not a reason to get all moral. It’s business, and business is a cut throat world.

But if getting moral is your bag then just remember we haven’t had much luck with sponsors and you may well get some joy when you read through the list of companies we’ve been associated with over the years that no longer exist. Greenalls was bought out by Scottish & Newcastle and took over the sponsorship. Neither exist anymore. NTL, Northern Rock etc etc…

Have Wonga miscalculated their maths with this one?

  1. I hope that’s not the case Andymag 😀 There must be some concern from Pardew and his staff about this surely. It’s not that we get injuries to players as all teams do, it just seems to be the same names coming up over and over again. That seems a bad sign to me. Some of these players like Vuckic and Gosling have had their progress set back for years now and you never get that time back. I just think both may need to move on.

  2. Big Dave @69

Biggest shower of **** I’ve ever heard you talk mate.

” the people that use them arn’t all the scum of the earth lazy bastads that just want something for nowt, and shouldn’t borrow what they can’t afford, I know you didn’t say that but it comes across like that.”

I said nothing of the sort and implied nothing of the sort. In fact I said I myself have used sites like this.
My point is that generally the only complications that arise, are if you DON’T pay back the loan in time as initially agree. If you use companies like this, you have to be responsible and take it upon yourself to make sure you understand all the conditions. Especially if you don’t pay it back on time as agreed.

My other point is. Don’t get all ethical about this and ignore all the rest of the companies in this world that are just as bad if not worse.

Please read and understand correctly what I wrote before making up and putting absurd words in my mouth to back a poor debate. 😆

Anyways, I’m off to poker night. If I lose I’m going to sue the companies selling these poker chips. I mean, they only promote illegal gambling and some of my friends really shouldn’t be there because they can’t afford to risk the R100 the buy-in costs 😉

  4. Big Dave – 😆 😆 😆 It looks like you’ve put as many words into JJs mouth as youve put big macs in ya own 😆 😆

I can’t believe Vuckic is so badly injured yet again!. I really wanted to see him being tried more as a CF than an AMF, but I don’t see him staying fit long enough for us to really see his full potential. Same goes for Gosling, which obviously makes our already small squad, that bit small.

  5. SHARPY aye we have a problem players are a bit fitness prone, one of the things that got my goat about not signing at least a c/b in the window as we know taylor is fitness prone too,its a long time since he done a full season 🙁

      (Quote)

  6. Ice – sorry mate, the boys bedtime. Yeah I know mate, I don’t want to keep harping on about the lack of signings but when you think that it’s looking likely Pardew could be using Xisco – a player who hasn’t featured for us in four of his five year contract, it kinda suggests that things haven’t really been thought out very well like.

How’s tricks anyway mate – you still enjoying your freedom? 🙂

      (Quote)

  7. SHARPY she only been gone 2 days and ive nearly got housemaids knee already 🙂 ,i cannot make my mind up if pardew is a yes man over signings or just accepting the way it is at sjp now 🙁

      (Quote)

  8. Ice – 😆 Yeah you strike me as the modern day Cinderella like 😯

I’m the same though mate, it really puzzles me why the board would sign Carr and Pardew up on such long deals and then seemingly not back them in the transfer windows?!. It was clear from what Pardew was saying last Jan that he wanted a CB back then, but the board only gave him money for Cisse. Then in the summer, again the money didn’t seem to be there for Pardew to land his transfer targets.
I know our pockets aren’t the deepest in the league, but with a 5th place finish, I would have thought we could have spent a bit more than 3 and a bit million like.

  9. Well we are heading to Brazil for next pre season because Lambiass wants to promote NUFC as a global product , is the guy completely devoid of all reality and common sense . If he wants to promote the club as a global product should he not be targeting countries so as China , India and maybe the middle east were there is mass population and countries were football still needs promoted ? Brazil the country that produced the most exciting football and the greats such as Pele , Zico , Romario and the current superstars , wont be that excited about a club that has won now’t for 40 odd years. Surely entering a pre season competion in a country where football needs developing would put us more in the spot light and we would create more interest for ourselves within that region . Just a thought

      (Quote)

  10. AXEL a good thought too imo,but we are talking owlheed he knows as much about footy as i do about selling sand to arabs.nowt

      (Quote)

  11. Well I’m with Dave as I have seen the misery these firms inflict on folk . I know people can search out advice and what have you but that don’t pay your utility bill. So yes you end up loaning often knowing you have to find an extra what have you on top what you borrowed, but the thing is people do it in the hope they can settle the debt in full on time.In reality many can’t because their wages arn’t gonna be any more this month than they were the last 😉 but panic sets in and they roll the debt over and so it goes on with more and more interest. I remember when my daughter was very small and me and the ex were both working ,low pay in both cases and we never took a holiday ,never had a night out or fancy clothes or owt but under thatchers goverment and the poll tax and wopping interest rates on the mortgage we really struggled. We cut back on everything possible but still it was tight as hell ,I sold ,pawned so much stuff you wouldn’t believe it and I’m certain had the likes of Wonga been around I would of fallen prey as you get so desperate . I feel so sad for people that have to turn to their type for help. Yes there are lots of other business doing awful stuff but it’s Wonga we are talking about not them. On the flip side it is ranking me that the media is kicking up a shitstorm for us going with them yet never batted an eyelid when the went with Hearts and Blackpool 👿 .

      (Quote)

  12. I doubt Owlheed is planning on going to Brazil to teach them about football – maybe it’s because they are one of the fastest growing countries on earth and there is an opportunity to tap into that. The Toon are a Premier League Club and the Premier league is massive world wide and watched by millions in S America. Fantastic exposure in a football daft country.

      (Quote)

  13. Axel – he isn’t looking to promote football though, he’s looking to promote NUFC. The point you make is hugely valid though, Brazil have produced some real quality players in the past and still are today. So maybe that’s the thinking behind it, to go out there and make afew alliances with youth development centres over there and tap into some talented young South American players.
Man Utd are doing it at the moment. I watched the final of the Milk Cup this year, NUFC young uns v Brazillian young uns and it seemed that their most talented played were already on Man Utds books.
I may be miles wide of the mark of course, but if not and we end up with players like Oscar and Neymar coming through OUR ranks, it could be the best pre-season tour we have ever arranged. 😉

      (Quote)

  14. Aye Sharpy I think that’s about right. People underestimate the draw of the Premier League even in countries that are football daft like Brazil. The Premier League is the place to play if you want to make it big and the top Brazilian players all gravitate to Europe. Getting the Toon noticed in Brazil would be massively more important than in India, China or USA for example where football is less developed. Their economy is growing massively and it can do no harm the Toon at all.

      (Quote)

  15. I wouldn’t mind a few young talented Brazilians on the books ,but how does it work with permits and all that stuff. ❓

  19. 3HW@93, Thanks, just had a quick look through and I did know about appearances for your country and all that but that’s not gonna apply to a young player ,that’s what I can’t make sense of like. 😕

  20. Kim – I fully understand were your coming from and I was fortunate not to have experienced Thatchers Britian, but surely your plight would have been down to a disgraceful government rather than a loan company?!. I mean to say that you were struggling so badly because of decisions the government was making rather than loan sharks or loan companies seeking you out. The other point I would take from your post is that, as difficult as you found it, you did it, you got by. The difference is that people then were skint!, it’s amazing how many self claimed skint persons smoke or drink or have the latest IPhone in the pocket. I’m not suggesting everyone, but I do wonder how many people are truly hard up.

      (Quote)

  21. Sharpy ,fair points and yeah the goverment was at the root of it ,I was just making the point that had there been a Wonga back then I may of been tempted like. It’s also true to say we now live in a “I want it now generation” but I still think there is also extreme poverty in this country .In the last 6 months there have been these food bank collectors at Asda and other supermarkets I have used .They give you a mini shopping list and ask you if you would be kind enough to buy just a couple of items from the list and place it in one of their trollies ,they then take it back to a food bank where people in need of food can collect some. I always get a few things if they ask but even under the witches goverment I can’t remember food banks being needed., it’s very sad that a country like GB has people that poorly off imo.

      (Quote)

  22. Kim – re permits, yeah that’s the only reason I doubted my reasoning. Again, could be wrong but I think if the players are signed as kids and come through the academies then it isn’t an issue, but I think I might just be making that up as I go along like 😳 😀

      (Quote)

  23. I’m not going to criticise the brazil trip before its even been made. I’ve banged on about attempting to break new markets-Brazil is surprising but also a good choice, America/Korea have been tapped on quite a bit…who knows, maybe Carr can get us some links down there and find us a Santiago Munez or two (yes I know he was mexican, but you get me right?)

    😆

      (Quote)

  24. Kim-What pisses me off about food is the amount that is just wasted. Some is wasted in the household, but so much is thrown out of supermarkets because its against policy to give it away for free and whatever. **** that, nowt wrong with food that’s about to/just gone past its display date, I’ll eat that 😉 😉

  25. Newkie, Yeah it’s my big bug barer that too . Having worked for gateway many moons ago the stuff flung out on a saturday night (we closed sundays) was criminal. I used to buy loads of veg cheap at 5pm from the greengrocery dept cause I was staff yet homeless shelters were never allowed to have it 🙁 .Likewise we were allowed to buy dented tins cheap too .I lost count of how many tins of salmon I accidently dropped 😉 .

      (Quote)

  26. Kim – I wouldn’t disagree that some parts of the country suffer poverty and small pockets suffer extreme poverty – but I would be amazed if Wonga was responsible like. Anyway, I have rattled on enough now …
I’m off to bed now, sleep well all 😉

Again, nowhere did I say anyone needed to ‘get a life’.

All these companies exploit people but at the end of the day, we need to take responsibility for things like debt on ourselves.
We get ourselves in these predicaments.

At the end of the day, people need to take responsibility for their own actions.

Ice…I see what you’re saying ref’ the far east but maybe the clubs view is that the likes of Man Ure and Liverpool have that place sewn up so they’re gonna attack a relatively “untapped” market for Prem clubs. Brasil has a fecking huge population and it may give the chance to forge a partnership with a club or 2 in regards to signing some promising young uns 😉

      (Quote)

  41. http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/9980575._/

    So only eleven purples eh…

    1 Krul, 2 Colocini, 3 Saylor, 4 Santon, 5 Anita, 6 Tiote, 7 Cabaye, 8 Jonas, 9 Ben Arfa, 10 Cisse, 11 Ba.

So those are our purples… Which basically means we won’t invest any largish figure in another player unless we sell one of them, because according to Dereck, we can’t afford more than 11 purples.
I guess “purples” puts them in a specific wage bracket then (30k-60k).

    1 Harper, 2 Willo, 3 Perch, 4 Simpson, 5 Raylor, 6 Bigi, 7 Gosling, 8 Marveaux, 9 Romain Amalfitano, 10 Shola, 11 Obertan

Those would be the blokes to “make the squad bigger”

    3 Elliot, 2 Good, 3 Streete, 4 Tavanier, 5 Dummett, 6 Abied, 8 Inman, 9 Sammeobi, 10 Campbell, 11 Haris Vučkić

All very good in theory apart from the fact that Willo and Perch simply arn’t good enough together as centre half back up and we desperately need a quality first choice fullback.

That’s all most fans have asked for. Two players that shouldn’t cost much more than 10mil in total. 😐 😕

    ******!

      (Quote)

  47. JJ & Georgio

Given our turnover which is considerably less than say Spurs or Arsenal, and that we are trying to ensure that our squad wages to turnover ratio is prudent, I doubt that it is fees that is the major problem, but wages. The idea that we have quotas for grades of players is novel, but not unreasonable. Hopefully we can offload some overpaid wasters and free up some space. Also if revenues increase hopefully we be able to afford 18 A grade purple .fo the starting 11 and bench. It’s hardly a surprise that we ain’t there yet.

      (Quote)

  48. Xisco and Harper are certainly on “purple” wages so was Smith until the summer yet they hardly got a kick between them last season and the club seemed to just about get by. The year before we had them and fat sol kicking their heels and managed to get by. Marveaux must be on pretty hefty wages as well after we apparantly offered him more than liverpool (confirmed by them)

Dont believe a word he says, Weve probably got a couple of players lined up already when hes telling the press we arent after anyone in january… 🙄

      (Quote)

  49. CC – that’s the problem. We don’t believe a word he says.
Prem – nice try. Explain to me why a club with our revenues and definite lack of necessary signings can’t afford at least 16 first team players. If as Derek says we can’t afford more than 11 then it’s a recipe for disaster. Is that what a 5th place finish brings?

      (Quote)

  50. I’m not privey to the accounts and hence not making definitive statements. But clubs with much higher turnover than hours eg Liverpool only have a handful of top paid players to cover their starting 11. Even the big 3 keep it to no more than 2 per position. We appear to have maybe 13 and could possibly afford 1 or 2 more. And yes it would have been nice to have them by now. What do you base your idea that we ought to be able to afford 16 on ?

      (Quote)

  51. Prem – It’s a very simple idea – some of your ‘purples ‘ will get injured and miss games. Teams fielding less than 6 purples will be in trouble.

      (Quote)

  52. Don’t disagree that’s what we want. Question is can we afford it. Last set of figures gave income about £80m with squad ratio of about 70% say £50m +. If a purple costs £50kpw +bonuses that’s £3m pa. So 16 purple cost £48m that’s not a lot for the rest of the squad. My guess would be that we would be needing an income of well over £100m pa to afford that. The Wonga deal should help.

      (Quote)

  53. I have to say, I think this is a load of **** to be honest. I mean, if we had signed Debuchy he would have been a ‘purple’, and would Douglas and De Jong more than likely.
If we can only afford so many ‘purples’ – what was the point of chasing these players?!

If this is all true, then we are putting SO many restrictions on who we can actually buy, that there will be no players that fits the bloody bill!!!

      (Quote)

  54. I agree with that whole purple thing in principle.
    Few drawbacks though:
    1) Anita was signed as a centre mid, where we already have purples, so in reality we only have 10 purples, with right back slot still open.
    2) I don’t doubt Steven Taylor’s talent, but you need at least half a solid season to be considered “purple” and he has never had that.
    3) The gap between our “purples” and our reserves in some positions is just way too high. I wasn’t asking for a new centre back to be first team like some, however 3rd choice needs to be a better standard than Willo really. Fine with him 4th choice though.
    4) Two of our purples can’t seem to play together. But as they’re “purples” we are forcing them into the team anyway. Wouldn’t mind selling Ba/Cisse, replacing with a winger/forward purple and an up and coming squad striker.

      (Quote)

  55. I thought HBA would be like players like Nani, unstoppable on his day, but go through many average spells. Since establishing himself in the first team at the start of the year he’s been incredibly consistent, maybe our most consistent performer ❓ (After Capn Colo)
All signings should be made with a view to forming the team around HBA. If he’d been given game time and found this form a year ago I doubt we would have signed Cisse.

      (Quote)

  56. ST – agreed, and I think Benny probably would have been that ‘on his day’ type player had Pardew let him get away with it last season.
I think for all we questioned Pardews treatment of Benny last season, it has definately worked because not only does he have that consistency, he also looks to be really enjoying his club football as well.
It also says alot about the maturity of Benny, when that has been questioned alot aswell.

  59. SOLANOSTRUMPET i wonder if Anita was signed as a CM though , yeah he played their for Ajax but he started as a LB and has played a fair number of games as a LB before he joined up with us . I have a feeling Pardew was always looking at him to fill the LB/RB spots when needed .
On the purple player thing is Xisco a purple player having been brought in on 50 grand a week ? the sooner we can get rid of him the better ,that would free up a fair wad too bring in a purple defender .
