What has changed? – Papiss Cisse

Cisse in the spotlight
Well he burst onto the scene and set the Premier League alight ten months ago, scoring a veritable plethora of cracking goals.

Even half chances were duly converted with aplomb as the ball rattled the back of the net a total of 13 times.

There seemed to be no stopping Newcastle’s new number nine and the new season ahead held plenty of promise for the Senegalese hit man. Newcastle fans were also salivating at the thought of more of the same from Papiss Cisse at the start 2012/13 season but unfortunately, and disappointingly, we have yet to see the striker find his range and as yet he failed to find the back of a Premier League net so far this season.

Plenty has been already been written about Cisse’s lack of goal scoring form but I thought I would like to put my spin on things and see if it stirs up some debate.

So to date we are yet to see many goals other than a one against Manchester United in the League Cup and a nice finish (offside?) against Bordeaux. There has been plenty of talk about him lacking confidence, not getting along with his striking partner Demba Ba and the inability of the two Senegalese strikers to play effectively together. His lack of goals could stem from a combination of these things but I think that there may be other issues at play.

During a game, if I notice a player is not getting into the game as they should, I immediately look to see what they are doing off the ball. I look to see if they are moving into space and presenting an option or working hard to help out their team mates. So with this in mind, the past four or five games I have been watching Cisse closely, hoping like everyone else that he comes good and crashes the ball into the back of the net. This of course has not happened but I have seen something in his play that may have changed from last season.

Wonder strikes aside, the one thing that really stood out for me with Cisse’ was his movement into space in and around defenders. His movement off the ball was sensational and more often than not he found space where there seemed to be none. His headed goal against Liverpool is a classic example of this. He drifted nicely behind the defenders while they were ball watching and finished it off in style. He seemed single minded in the task of putting himself in the best possible position to score.

Compare that to this season and I am seeing very few of these types of runs and Cisse seems content to stand between defenders if a cross comes in and hope that one of them will not deal with the ball as he should. A factor in all this may be the poor football we have played but the form of Ba has cast a bad light on Cisse’s goal drought. As an example, the first goal Demba Ba put away against Reading was the type of run that Cisse was producing last season. It really makes me question where this type of movement has gone from Cisse’s game. He seems to be playing with his back to goal more often than not and to me, it is simply not his thing.

I am not doubting that his confidence has dropped and that the delivery of the ball to him has been poor more often than not, but I think that this attacking part of his game has fallen by the wayside to a certain extent.

This is just what I have noticed this season with Cisse and his general play. I don’t think for a second that he is not putting the effort in and that is not really on trial here. I really think he is a cracking player and the goals will come, I just hope it is sooner rather than later.

  2. Maybe his movement is something that Carver and Pards has changed in the training sessions, maybe Pardew wants him to play the target-man role.
    AMF on last article

  3. think you got it spot on,ba and cisse just cant seem to team up together as a duo effectively.and being a striker then we all see how they play on confidence, and his is at rock bottom.the norwich penalty should have been the bottom of barrell, but havent seen much improvement since like i was hoping.maybe time to unlease king shola up top with ba for the derby, they seem to pair up superbly and we all know that this is the game for king shola to fire

  4. Ice 🙂 there may be something going on, you would think they would be tearing it up though. It’s almost like Cisse doesn’t know where to put himself when BA is playing in the middle. Although Cisse was average against Everton and BA was on the bench?

  5. Maybe it’s just a case of human nature. A lot of people when joining a new company, club, organisation or whatever…knock their c**t in to make an impression. After a while people get comfortable and their performance naturally drops. Up to the management to keep them constantly on their toes and 100% motivated. he obviously has the ability.

  6. I seem to remember interviews with each of the Demba’s. I remember Cisse saying that he wanted to work on his link up play more, and that Ba said that in order to score more, he needed to make more incisive forward runs. Unfortunately, their strengths lie in what they were already good at.

I said it yesterday, and I’ll say it again. Cisse should not start tomorrow because he offers nothing when he’s not scoring and we can’t carry him anymore. Shola or someone else should start in the attack over him and Cisse can prove himself by scoring off the bench.

I know people have been saying that he needs confidence, and be supported with starts, but the same could be said of other players like Marveaux, but he is having to prove himself from the bench. Until players start showing that they are ready to offer something this year, we cannot continue to carry them

  8. Nice blog aus
i think the drought this season looks worse than it is. during he first few games he was fasting. might be wrong but many other leagues start later don’t they? and they aren’t as fast paced as the prem. so it could be he just couldn’t adapt to fit fasting round intense training/playing regime.
That may also be why ba has started better this season, he’s worked out a way to manage Ramadan with the start of the prem season.

  10. I think it’s a couple of things, the formation, the way the team are actually playing (not as good as last year when he joined) his confidence and how he is playing himself-which hasn’t been great. Also think it may be like Moreno says, not that I’m saying he’s lazy, just that he hasn’t seemed to have the same buzz about him as he had last season.

I still think they could work but we’ll need new players/different system..

  11. Anyone see SSN when they were talking about tomorrow’s game? Jeff was talking about Taylor’s comments on stamp collectors and shitty mackem players 😀 .
I reckon that Pardew won’t bench Cissé as he’s our most expensive signing in recent years and went ahead with pard’s say so, meaning he looks bad if his expensive signing is on the bench.

  12. Aussie tell the Lass that was another good article 😉 she really has got the hang of this writing malarky 😀 .
On Cisse he is no different than anyother striker in that they all go through droughts but we need to keep playing him so that he can get the goal to get him back to the way he was.
I think dropping him would be a bad move and could knock him back even more, he needs to know that Pards has faith in him, I don’t think it’s helping that Ba is playing the role that he should have.

DAVE aussie says his mrs costs a fortune in shoes being chairman can we have a whip-round for him ime sure we can raise two pound fifty so he can get her a couple of pair of flip-flops one pair for during the week and a pair for sundays 😀 😀

  14. Ice I think she deserves flip flops for keeping us entertained 😉 but I think she deserves a gold medal for sticking with Aussie as it must be hard work having to listen to him all the time 😀
As for Big Al I wouldn’t expect him to think anything else, I can’t believe people are wanting him benched 😯 how is he supposed to end his drought on the bench making it harder for him to get up and firing on all cylinders

That’s what they said on SS. Just gives O’Neil an opportunity to rile his team up, laminate it and put it on a wall in the changing.

  19. Aussie – a very fair and well balanced article mate.
I tend to agree with the opinion that there are issues between Ba and Cisse. I get the impression that Cisse may not like Bas ego and the fact he doesn’t seem to support his Country folk the way Cisse seems to. May be wrong with that, but they don’t seem to be chums.
I don’t think Cisse works well in a 4-4-2 formation and seemed to thrive on Bennys and Bas movement and creativity last season.
I always feel like 4-4-2 makes us look a very average with very little offensive clue. But as a 4-3-3 or similar, we seem so much more dangerous with the likes of Benny and Cabaye freed up to focus more on attacking.

God it’s proper squeaky bottom time now like!. I absolutely hate Sunderland, and the very thought of a lost makes me feel sick man 😆
He’s my line up for Tom:

    ————– Krul ————
    Simmo – Saylor – Colo – Santy
    ——— Tiote — Perch ——–
    —Benny – Cabaye – Ba —-
    ————- Cisse ———-

Tiote, Perch and Cabs boss the midfield and get it up to Benny, Ba and Cisse quick to turn Bramble inside out.

    I don’t care how it’s acheived – just feckin win boys ……… HWTLs!!!!! 😛 😛 😛

  21. All of the team have been off there game this season (due to not having a steddy 11) we need to keep the ball and play with a little bit of swag like last season. Cisse is a goal scorer, so lasts start giving him more chances and watch him fly, come on NUFC
