Is Cheik Tiote’s indiscipline a problem we need to work around?

Tiote sees red against Sunderland
I always get the feeling with Cheik Tiote that he is just mere seconds away from disaster, and the Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland yesterday only highlighted that fact.

His sending off will be debated amongst fans for some time yet. Some say it wasn’t that bad and was a yellow at best, some will cite other incidents within the match (namely Seb Larsson’s clavicle kick on Shola Ameobi) that went unpunished whilst others will suggest that the referee pandered to the him crowd and failed to apply any common sense. There is also a portion of fans who believe the right decision was made at the time and that Tiote has nobody but himself to blame.

For me it was probably a harsh card but I can see why he was given it. I understand fully that the whistle had blown for a free-kick to us just prior to the incident and that Tiote was being pulled back after that, but then it just becomes an off the ball incident or, as has been indicated by the FA, violent conduct which carries with it a three game suspension.

None of what happened yesterday matters now It’s been and gone and it seems as though Alan Pardew and his coaching team, none of whom have questioned the red card, seem unlikely to appeal Tiote’s dismissal. Perhaps that is the biggest clue as to whether or not the red card was a worth punishment for the infringement?

However it can’t continue to happen. Cheik Tiote is getting himself a reputation and will be treat accordingly by officials. He will be targeted by opposing teams so if he wants to continue being an important part of our team then he needs to wise up and realise that he can’t go charging round like a bull in a china shop.

The problem is that aggression is part of Cheik Tiote’s game and if you take that out then you may well lose a bit of what Cheik Tiote is all about. All the same it is something that needs curbing as it is going to end up costing us more and more. People will mention Roy Keane, who Manchester United tried to calm down but soon gave up when they realised that by trying to calm him they took away a part of the player, and there are similarities, but for me they end there. Remember Roy Keane had world-class players able to fill the void his madness left behind. We don’t.

It’s not just about red cards though. Tiote has racked up the suspension since he has been at Newcastle United. He averages a yellow card every other game which equates to 19 in the Premier League alone and would be enough to see him miss six games through yellow card suspensions without any further through red card infringements.

Is that acceptable? Is that enough discounting any injuries or participation in mid-season competitions such as the African Cup of Nations, for us to paper over with our squad? Probably now we have Gael Bigirimana, James Perch and Vurnon Anita, but we need all of our purples on the pitch at one time if we want to push on, and Tiote is that category.

He just needs to chill a bit I reckon. Anyone agree?

  1. agree that simpson tends to panic a bit when he has the ball.
imo tho he does back off too much.
Its ok if he backs off then gets a tackle or block in. But you’ll find he backs off and then gets skinned. Thats the problem.
He is good to have on the goal line tho 😆

  2. Willo may be the top clearer if the ball but if you look at those clearances you’ll see that very rarely does it benefit us, 1 in 10 find a Newcastle man the rest either go out when we could’ve released a counter or return to an opposition player and we’re in the same position as before. There is more behind stats than just numbers.

  3. Tiote had Jonas and Cabaye alongside him last season and the 3 of them were outstanding in the 2nd half of the season. However all 3 have started very poorly this season, they need games together but that just isn’t happening this season. Tiote is a good player and is important to our team, he is a leader on the field – but Big Dave is right – he’s none of those things if he’s not completely focused on his game because of a stupid card and suspensions.

As for Ranger – he doesn’t seem to want to listen to anyone – he has absolutely no respect for anyone (including himself) and it’s sad to see. This kid is living off alot of money at the mo, but when he gets the boot and that money runs out, and his mates **** off coz he has nowt to offer them anymore, he’s gonna have some serious regrets.
Football seems to be a very forgiving industry, when you look at how many chances the likes of Bellemy and Barton have had in the past. It seems like you have to go some way the hit your last chance – Ranger seems to be there.
Pardew has said all he needs to do is turn up on time for training – not difficult is it.

Thats the exact midfield I would play

Jonas and Cabaye player either side of Tiote.

Tiote sits in front of the back four while the other two bring the ball forward.

Ben Arfa for me would play in front starting on the right but playing a free role. Simpson doesn’t get forward much so the right side shouldn’t be too exposed.

I’d only play with either Ba or Cisse up front and someone like Fergie providing width on the left.

  5. JJ-Same, I never got the abuse he got for backing off, it’s usually meant that no winger no matter how classy has ever really skinned him and had a free run in at our goal.

He doesn’t look to comfortable on the ball, but he can contribute going forward-it was a good ball that he passed to Benny that resulted in our goal, and he can still overlap and cross, it’s just the dribbling he seems to struggle with..

  6. I thought Jonas was well below form on Sunday.. He really struggled to get into the game. I’m a fan of his and I thought he would have more influence on the game. Even when Tiote was on the par, Jonas was quiet. I thought BA was excellent and ran his **** off 🙂

  7. Jonas Gutierrez has 2 1/2 yrs left on his contract. I cant see him remaining in the 1st team, as a starter at least, with the performances he is putting in so far this season.
Next summer may see him moving on. Thoughts please.
Nowt wrong with his effort or attitude, just dont think he is at PL level any more. Sometimes it feels like we are carrying him.

      (Quote)

  8. Jonas has played poorly in every game he has played on the wing this season.
When he is played as a defensive midfielder in the centre I think he’s done a good job.
He just doesn’t have the pace or delivery to be out wide anymore.

  9. @Beardsley
I have a feeling he took a sizeable pay cut when he signed an extension, and will stay with us until he retires. He likes the club and the city, and think he will accept an increasingly bit part role.
We do need players like this.

  10. @Andy 135
To me it says the opposite: Tiote is an incredible player, and plays in an incredibly important position, but the drop from him to Perch (as solid a shift that Perch puts in) to me just says that we can’t afford to have someone that misses so many games. He can’t be that indispensable as we finished 5th last year.

@Sharpy&JJ But how can you build a team around a guy that consistently misses so much of every season ❓ Third season with us that he won’t have past 26 league appearances.
I would rather try and replace him with someone that doesn’t get as many niggly injuries as it usually takes Tiote a few games to get up to speed after returning from one.

      (Quote)

  11. I don’t think we should really be building the team around Tiote, I’d say it should be built around Benny.Cabs and Tiote are a great match, Ba and Cisse are quality, but we look set to miss out on Ba so it’ll be Cisse up top alone, depending on what we do, the people who we’ll phase out will be willo/staylor (hoping for some sort of successor to Colo) Jonas and Simmo…

      (Quote)

  12. Watching the match again, we should have had a pen for a larson hand ball too ❗ 😆

Seriously hope we never get Atkinson again, the f.a needs to be seriously purged of its goons who appoint these refs, and the refs themselves.

      (Quote)

  13. JJ – sorry mate, had to go collect the boy from nursery, he’s gonna be a king in his nativity play! bit of an improvement on last years snowman!.
I would absolutely go back to that midfield in a heartbeat. Also agree about Jonas, he’s on a left winger. If we play 4-4-2 he has to go with Fergie on the left. But I’d sooner see 4-3-1-2, with Cabaye, Tiote and Jonas and give Benny the freedom to play. It suits the team and the squad IMO.

ST – I’m not suggesting we build a team around him. If he’s missing I think Perch or Anita could fit into that 3 man midfield easily – Raylor as well come to think of it. I was just suggesting that Tiote looked best in that 3 man midfield and we played more fluent, offence football as well.

  14. for me he’s had a bad year (his standards) and players know when there not firing on all cylinders, for me he’s frustrated

he’ll come good but he needs to be controlled like benny needs hugged……

different players different needs but i think pard’s will 10000 percent be speaking with him

      (Quote)

  15. Sharpy-I know they played Brum two seasons ago because my brother in law went there to watch em 😆

I’d say they’re the weakest in our group, but I know nowt about playstyle, other than the fact they were nicer than brum (not hard) when on tv 😉

      (Quote)

  16. Newkie – I’ve realised me confusion – I was thinking of Basel. Although Brugge have one or two half decent players – but I’ll save that for the Brugge article 😉 😀

Ice Pup – I think you’re dead right mate. I think all the transfer talk unsettled him and it seemed to be his name Pardew used when talking about players that may bring a bid they couldn’t refuse. I wonder if that left him thinking the club were trying to sell him as well. You never know what goes on in players heads.

      (Quote)

  17. Evening all ,been busy all day .See we are still all chewing the fat over Tiote . For me if we sold him he would be missed but his shoes could be filled by Perch ,Anita (possibly ,not sure yet as prefer him at RB tbh ) or eventually Bigi 😕 who still needs to step up a little more.Anyway Perch will do o.k .Still think we should of held on to Guthrie tbh.

  18. See the belgian police have said Toon fans that travel without tickets will be arrested ,well thats buggered that one up . Brugge is only a 2 hour drive from where i live i was thinking of going and have a bevvy with other toon fans without tickets .I seriously suggest anyone without not too go the Belgian police are twats .

      (Quote)

  19. Axel @173 ,That’s a harsh line they have taken there ,it’s not like Toon fans have a bad reputation for trouble like.

      (Quote)

  20. Axel @ 173…that seems insane. I can only imagine that happening here. I live north of San Francisco. last night, game 7 of our National League Playoffs (SF Giants vs. St. Louis Cardinals), and bars a plenty showing the game. So, if a Cardinal fan (of which there were many) walked into a bar (or perhaps on the street) wearing their Cardinal hats, tops or jackets…they’d be arrested? If the same rules applied. How is that legal?

      (Quote)

  21. KIMTOON they still hold a grudge against English football fans no matter what team they support , because of what happened at the Hysel all those years ago . I remember when the Euros were here in Holland and Belgium England’s first game was here in Holland if i remember rightly in Eindhoven which is a stone throw away from the Belgian border .The Dutch police praised the English fans and came out and said they hoped all the fans would behave like we did ,our next game was over the border and trouble flared , even the Dutch police came out and said the Belgian police were far too heavy handed and caused the trouble themselves .

  22. Foster is playing out of his skin for Celtic tonight against Barca. Have we missed a trick selling him for 2 or 3 million?

  23. NORCAL it is insane , but then again i doubt you Americans have a hooligan problem at any of your sporting events . That doesn’t seem to be an American thing , here in Europe its still a problem and we Brits are still paying the price for past events while England is now probably the safest country to watch a football game in these days .

      (Quote)

  24. @Axel-Ah right, so it’s okay for their clubs to racially abuse our players, but we aren’t allowed to travel there for a pint, makes perfect sense that like 🙄 That was the dutch mind, not the belgians, but even so it’s a crock of ****.

Could just go along but not in a toon shirt… 😛

      (Quote)

  25. Axel…I think it’s only in the vicinity of the stadium you’ll be arrested without a ticket so you should be ok to have a pint in the town with the toon fans 😉

      (Quote)

  26. RITCHIETOON they are asking if you don’t have a ticket please don’t travel to Brugge , says it all really . We are not welcome . Tossers

      (Quote)

  27. Axel…yeah but the arrest bit is only in the vicinity of the stadium…they can’t stop any body travelling there….they seem a reet happy bunch 🙄 😆

      (Quote)

  28. NEWKIE if i did go , not only would i wear my Toon shirt i would paint me face black and white ,wear a toon baseball cap ,wear a toon scarf and after a few of those Belgian beers find a karoke bar and continually sing the Blaydon races and other toon songs . 👿 😯 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Axel don’t let them tell you what to do, you just go down and get stuck into them ask them do they know who you are, or you could tell them your friends with Cheik Tiote 😆

      (Quote)

  30. Axel…just go mate for the craic, there’s always the chance of spare tickets too once ya get talking to the Geordies…..or the touts but then ya’d prob be in the home end so would have to rub ya face paint off 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  31. BIG DAVE or i take me lass ,who is a dutch police officer or at least lend her pepper spray . 😉 and believe me even Cheik would be no match for her .

      (Quote)

  32. Axel , Hysel was a long time ago, I can’t believe they still hold every english club responsible for that. 😯

      (Quote)

  33. BIG DAVE Apparently their thinking of issuing Tazers as standard issue here ,hope not or i will never dare too tell her too shut up . 😆

      (Quote)

  34. Axel easy solution to that just hand cuff her 😆 she’ll not be able to get the tazer out, and not be able to stop you from frisking her 😆

      (Quote)

  35. “I do have some worries about his discipline,” said Pardew,
So Pards worries about his discipline yet some on here don’t think there’s a problem with Tiote’s discipline 😆

      (Quote)

  36. Discipline is something all people need in all walks of life, not just Tiote. So, for sure, he needs to tighten up his discipline.

But it’s a difficult position he’s in. Curbing his enthusiasm may make him hesitant in the tackle, and if you are hesitant in the tackle you are likely to get hurt. And he’d be far less effective.

I think it is good that he has that aggression, and yes it would be ideal if he only ever chose the right tackle to make (just as it would be ideal that every shot on target went in) but reality is never the way we want it.

He’s an imperfect human being, pfft, so what? It’s not as if that’s unusual. And surely he can’t be held responsible for **** refereeing.

  37. I like it when the Aussies get on and stir up the whole thing again, easy for me this time though, I agree with ya Bris!

Axel-Go for it fella! I’m sure its just the local influence, from what I understand Bruge is meant to be a propper nice and quaintish kinda town (Yeah, i’ve watched In Bruges 😉 ) so no doubt they get up in arms when the football fans storm into town and ruin their evenings, but ah well, they need to get used to it. The Brits go all over Europe pissing off locals so it’s only fair they take their share 😀

  39. Vegas, don’t try and romanticise Titote’s agressive nature on the park 😉 the man is a beast, end of….. 😆

      (Quote)

  40. Perhaps we should teach him to be polite. ‘Excuse me, sir, may I tackle you, please, Mr Rooney? No? Well there’s a good chap, go ahead and have a shot. Mr Krul, would you mind getting out of the way of that football, you might hurt your hand. That’s the way, my friends. It’s not about winning; it’s enough just to be a good sport.’

      (Quote)

  41. Vegas @ 200 😆 So we are not all gods children then? 😉 ….sorry that is a debate for another time
Not sure how the polite angle would work tho mate…. it would be more like this.
“Sorry old boy, it was rather a bad challenge, is ones leg broken?” 😕
“I think so Mr Tiote” 😥
“Jolly good, lets be having you back on your feet then” 😎

      (Quote)

  42. Sorry, mate, I’m an atheist. The best I can do is say we’re all Gaia’s animals 😀

And Tiote is a furry misunderstood lap dog.

      (Quote)

  43. Having watched with interest Tiotes’ return to first team action this year. It was no surprise that he got his marching orders. It seemed pretty obvious to me that he’s been roaring around the pitch far to aggressively and can only have highlighted to match officials that he appeared to be pushing his red card ‘envelope’. It wasn’t the worst tackle I’ve seen him make, it was late and high, but it was the sum total of what had gone before, both in the derby match and the previous ones he’s played in.
We can’t afford to have a player on the books who goes missing due to suspension and injury as much as Cheick does. He’s a combative player and a much needed shield for our sometime vulnerable defence. His goal against the Gunners will always make him a firm favourite of mine, I’d like him to wise up, improve his decision making, his timing and play hard but fair.
If he doesn’t? then the Toon may not be able to accommodate such a reckless luxury bit part player who warns the bench more than the hearts of the fans

      (Quote)

  44. Vegas, me too mate 😉 We came from the apes….. I will use the cro-magnon form of Richietoon as my evidence to back my case 😆

  45. Well we are going to miss Tiote for 3 games now but we have 3 that can play that position Anita ,Perch and Bigi wonder wich one Pardew will pick i hope Perch the lads best position is DM and he has improved a lot since he joined us . The thing then is i any of them play out of their skins and really impresses where does that leave Tiote ? in that situation i could see the club cashing in on him in January .

      (Quote)

  46. Its a must for tiote to sort his card record out!! He is missing about 9 games a season because of his sending offs plus he frequently gets injured so basically hes only playin near enough half a season! Hes a big loss when we dont have him in the team but he really does need to calm the cards down! I think mr perch will do a fantastic job in center midfield with yohan in the next few prem games!

      (Quote)

  47. Looking forward to the match tomorra night! I think our next 2 europa league games are 4-6 points which will defo put us in a great positon to qualify for next round! Who will we bring in tomorra night? My team would be

    ———–elliot
    Simpson taylor wilo ferguson
    Marveaux bigi tiote obertan
    ——-cisse shola

      (Quote)

  48. Army – yeah mate, I’d defo start Shola on Thurs, felt sorry for him at the w.end and he needs a chance to show what he could have done. Also given Tiote a chance to redeem himself.
I’d swap Oba and Marv over and personally I’d go with Saylor and Colo coz they need match fitness or maybe Saylor and Tav, but I think Willo needs a rest. Alternatively put Tav left back and push Fergie LW to focus on getting balls in the box for Cisse and Shola, saying as Fergie has been provider for Cisse goals so far this season.
I’d like to see Campbell replace Shola when he tires and would be great to see Abied feathered some stage as well.

      (Quote)

  49. Sorry for commenting so late .A question if Tiote deserved a red for high studs, what happened with Larrson who tried to perform CPR on Shola ❓ But we still have Biggi and Perchinio who has improved big style

      (Quote)

  50. Personally, I don’t think it was a sending off at all. The ref was clearly biased but it’s happened and , sadly, there is nothing we can do about it.

Tiote’s main problem is being targeted by ref’s, who will be looking for any rash challenge or what they deem as rash and some will use the inconsistent rule of “dangerous play.”

If we take out Tiote’s fighting in your face spirit out of him, we may as well sell him because his game would be effectively nullified.

Let’s call Tiote a required liability. We know that each game is a finger nail biter when he goes in full steam, yet we also know just how effective he can be in snuffing out any dangerous midfield he’s up against.

The only possible change Tiote could make to his game is to never go into a tackle of 60/40 in the oppo’s favour if there is no major threat.

How he can define that in the heat of a midfield battle, I don’t rightly know because it would mean he has to evaluate a potential tackle before he dares make it, which would kill off at least 50% of his game.
