Game On! Bordeaux v Newcastle

Game On at Bordeaux
Newcastle conclude their Europa League group stage campaign this evening by visiting group leaders Bordeaux.

Only a win for United will be enough to ensure top spot for Alan Pardew and his side and anything else will mean that second place in the group will have to do.

In fairness the important thing is done and that is qualification for both sides. The only issue to decide is who will get the coveted seeded draw which will see the team that grabs first place be able to take advantage of a home game in the second leg of the next round. Naturally that might not be an advantage at all in the end and if you want to progress you need to beat what is in front of you anyway.

The big early team news in the supposed inclusion of Nile Ranger who will start a game for United for the first time in a very long time. His history aside, he has apparently been applying himself in training and doing the basics, such as turning up on time, right. He has a chance and now it’s up to him to take it.

The game is live on ESPN and is also being broadcast by a number of overseas TV channels so picking up a stream should be easy enough. Normal rules apply, those being that if you happen to come across a good stream then please post a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will hopefully be updated in full below as and when it becomes available. I say hopefully as I’ll be on my way to Amsterdam and may be caught in traffic so I’m hoping someone else will be about to keep an eye on things. If not keep an eye on the comments as team news will be posted by someone somewhere.

Howay the lads!

  1. Yalright Aussie…. if it’s gonna cost me street cred then just ignore the “Big Dave” bit….. 😆 😆

  2. I was livid after the Bordeaux result, that’s the final straw as far as I am concerned and my sympathy for Pardew and his staff has just ended.

We have thousands of fans paying thousands of pounds to follow there beloved NUFC and the least they deserve is players putting in the effort.

The bullshit needs to stop now, and Padrew, the coaches and the players need to start earning there money and get this turned around.

I don’t necessarily think that the majority of the fringe players have let Pardew and the club down. I just think they are quite simply not good enough, and you can only expect so much from them. They have all had there chances on numerous occassions and have in the majority of cases failed to deliver.

Pardew must be quite shocked himself at the poor display of some of his fringe players. He’s shown them enough loyalty, him and Ashley’s cash book need to get us moving in the right direction.

I hope Pardew has his targets identified for the new year.

  3. Munich@299 – Eh. Lack of Cabaye is an easier explanation. He only missed four games last season, but has already missed five, and probably played injured in more. We have long-term alternatives (esp. Anita), but they’re still adapting and/or developing.

      (Quote)

  4. Wellington, whereas Cabaye has been missed, I think you’re way off the mark putting all your hopes on Cabaye. 😯

He was also involved in the games at the beginning of the season when we played so poorly.

Anita seems to be improving and played well against a ten man Wigan. We’ll see how well he plays against an 11 man Fulham. At least the bloke puts in the effort, not like a lot of the wasters…

By the way Wellington, I think you got your post wrong… @299 I just cut and pasted a series of stats from another web page which in my opinion made interesting reading.

      (Quote)

  5. Munich@307 (and this time I’m squinting to get the number right 😉 ) – I like Anita and think he’ll be excellent next season.

As for Cabaye’s impact, it’s not down to him pulling a Roy of the Rovers. We’ve lost points for his absence. Getting those scrappy points would have helped morale. (Which is certainly down, even if I don’t agree with you about a crisis.) There have been other key absences as well.

None of that excuses the club, I’m just saying that the manager hasn’t done a terrible job in the circumstances.

  6. Troy @ 244 You say “I thought B&B wanted him sacked now by the comments he made last week, but when I challenged him about it, he told me he had never said such a thing.

I reviewed his posts and to be fair, despite him saying everything but those particular words it did fool me as well.”

Just shows you why it is a good job things are written down. Even when they are, you think I’ve said something else. When you scrutinise you can find no such thing – not even a contradiction!

If you think Ashley is the problem and not Pards, how did Ashley manage to give Pards the wherewithall to get us to fifth?

And why don’t you now stand up and chant Ashley out? You don’t do it any more, do you?

      (Quote)

  7. Troy @ 228 says “I used my behaviour as an example. Not everyone can pull off my antics. It takes a mixture of passion, bottle, arrogance and a touch of stupidity.

However, prior to doing that, I used to sing alone and shout for his sacking. I got many derogatory comments from those around me in the stands. But I regret none of it. I saw he wasn’t good enough and stood by my convictions.”

It’s the touch of stupidity that is the vital missing ingredient for me Troy! 😯 😆

  10. Kim – I think you are forgetting its an away game.
We will most likely go looking for the draw and lose. Again.
I really dont have much confidence in our defense at the moment and Cisse is still firing blanks at the other end.
I’m putting my money on a 0-0 again, because the last time I did that, we won 3-0.
    😕
    We live in hope

    @B&B

    I’ve got a list.

    A list of bloggers who you fooled last time. Everyone below thought you wanted him sacked by the tone of posts you printed;

    Troy
    Mark
    Big Dave
    Toon Chicken
    Trumpet
    Sharpy

You got your list of candidates suitable to replace Pards if he resigns now which is what you wish? 😛

  22. Norwich had some beautifully worked set plays. Perhaps Chris can give our Pards a few pointers? And Bassong looks terrible as well. No wonder we got rid of both. Now we’re flying along aren’t we? With our two clever lads in charge the skies the limit. I’ve given up on predictions though. Got them all wrong yesterday. 😳

Troy – That list surely does trump the fact that you can find no written evidence that I was wanting him sacked. 😯 Is that what you’re saying? 😆 Never a dull moment debating with you, but many an infuriating one. 😈 🙄

Are you going to answer my question as to why you’re not chanting for Ashley’s head, as you think he is to blame? You’ve gone quiet on that one. 😳

As for a replacement for Pardew, I leave those things to others. It’s amazing the good suggestions that people, who are more knowledgeable than me in these matters, come up with. I just happen to think there has got to be more and better options in the world.

You happen to think Pardew is the best we can ever hope for under Ashley. If Ashley is the problem, you should arrange an impromptu meeting with him! 😉 At the very least, you should start the anti-Ashley chants. 😳 Having said that, I’m bored with those chants, and I don’t think they would play well with the vast majority of the fans.

      (Quote)

  24. so some favourable results for us today.
Now we need to take advantage with another 3 points on monday.
That would make us more secure in the mid table.
Surely Pardew can get the Lads fired up and motivated for this one.

      (Quote)

  25. G2-Yeah, the set pieces got me thinking. People say ours have been poor since Carroll left, but its interesting that was basically the same time that Pardew had settled into the side and Chris had gone…Then again, Norwich do have Snodgrass who is a tidy little player.

      (Quote)

  26. We need to start by getting our defending sorted out. If we don’t stop defending like **** schoolboys, we’re going down. Our defending is so consistently pathetic it indicates to me that Pardew hasn’t got the ability to stamp it out. A decent manager would dangle the main culprits by the heels off the Tyne Bridge.

It’s not a case of misfortune, just sheer sloppiness and unprofessionalism. Forget the fact that we cannot keep possession, and consistently look to the long ball (although keeping the ball would go a long way to help): defending, and cutting out the ridiculous errors in particular, is the key. I will be judging Pards at Fulham on this more than anything else.

While I’m on with it, I hold Pards personally responsible for the number of needless freekicks we give away all over the pitch, but particularly those that allow the opposition to launch one into our box.

I cannot believe the praise that Pardew heaps on Shola, who gives away needless freekicks left, right and centre. That is something that can be sorted out by a manager if there is a will. I doubt very much whether Pardew recognises it as a problem. 🙄

    @B&B

The list I provided were all debating with you at one stage or another. We all stated we didn’t believe Pardew should be sacked at the moment in time. Due to the fact you were the only contradicting our opinions we all thought you wanted him sacked now. Almost 20 hrs went by before you announced you didn’t want him sacked now.
We all lost the will to live at that stage! 🙄

There’s certainly many infuriating moments when debating with you, there’s even more confusing moments. You really had us all confused.

You finally admitted you don’t want him sacked but want him to resign. 😯 😯

You should sing a song about him resigning in the morning. 😛

Moving into Ashley. I believe Ashley has learnt many lessons and has steadied the ship.

I also believe Pardew will steady the ship and as I predicted I expect us to finish between 10th and 7th.

Where I differ from you, you predict Pards isn’t good enough and you see him being sacked anytime soon.

As I’ve explained, if I thought there were better people out there, either to own the club or manager willing to work under Ashley then I would be shouting for both of them to go.

In times of austerity, I don’t see anyone offering to take over us and I don’t see any good managers willing to work under Ashley.

Sometimes in life you have to put up with things that aren’t always perfect as there is nothing else to replace them with.

You have stated you want him to resign now and believe we wouldn’t have any problem attracting a top manager with a proven track record.

Yet we haven’t had one suggestion from you? 😛

We have all told you we can’t think of any but then again we don’t want him to resign. For that very reason. 😉

      (Quote)

  31. B+B did you not have high hopes for this season ? as im sure you said your were happy with the club at the start of the season, so a few months in and it’s all changed, is it just Pards ❓

      (Quote)

  32. Just came across this super Pards quote 😆
“We’re not really trying to get players in,” said Pardew, whose side play Greek club Atromitos tonight following a 1-1 draw in Athens in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier. “I’m 100 per cent happy to go with what we’ve got.

I wonder if he is still happy 😀

      (Quote)

  33. Dave – I note Troy cannot concede that he got the wrong end of the stick by not reading what I wrote. He is still wanting to blame me for the fact that he thought I wanted Pards sacked when I never said anything of the sort. He can’t hols his hands up honourably, and doesn’t consider that it might be his reactions to me, and our to and fro, that gave other people the impression I might have been saying something different.

Usually, in the pub, it is that he hasn’t listened and he hears only what he wants to hear in his eagerness to pounce. I’ve always said that, if our conversations were written down, it would show that I have not said what he claims I have. So it has been proved. It really is impossible to keep him in his box in a conversation.

As best I can recall, I wouldn’t say I had high hopes for the season. I remember thinking that Ashley had provided a squad that could do very well. If Pardew had done it once, he could do it again.

I was not particularly worried about the lack of major signings in the summer because I knew we always have the option of buying in January when contracts have run down. I thought Pardew should be given a chance provided we are not in serious danger of relegation.

Unfortunately, the more I see of Pardew, especailly when things aren’t going well, the more I doubt he can take us anywhere. There are so many reasons why I have lost confidence in him. However, I still think, as the man currently in charge, he should be given more time to be fair to him. Who knows, I may be completely wrong and I hope he proves me so.

I strongly predict Pardew will fail sooner rather than later. I really think people underestimate what teh statistics tell us about managers’ durations. When Pardew does fail, he should resign rather than wait to be sacked. That is what Troy asked Souey to do, and Pards should be no different.

To say there are no better options out there is extreme fatalism. Why wouldn’t a top manager want to manage Newcastle United, even with Ashley? Troy keeps on about our difficulty getting a manager last time. But times have moved on. That may have been more to do with Ashley’s attitude at the time and not the lack of willing candidates. To quote Troy above (because not everything he says is stupid), “I believe Ashley has learnt many lessons and has steadied the ship.” I think Ashley’s learning that Pardew is useless, eight year contracts are stupid in football, and we need to spend some lolly in January.

      (Quote)

  34. Dave @ 341 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 That’s what I mean about Pards.

What about this on re-inforcements in the light of injuries. “It’s increased the discussion mode on that” What the %*^$! 😯 😳 How does his muddled mind work? Perhaps Troy could shed some light on that discussion mode? 😉

      (Quote)

  35. B – Why wouldn’t a top manager want to manage Newcastle United, even with Ashley?

Which “top manager” would that be ? Pardew won all the awards going last year.

We’d have to poach someone from another club, and that aint gonna happen. Which “top managers” are available ?

      (Quote)

  36. Munich – We can attract top managers and we can get one as and when they become available. If Ashley’s smart and has learnt a bit, he’ll do plenty of homework, just like he does on his player purchases, and time it right.
You say Pardew won all the awards going last season. He’d be winning them for worst manager this season if there was such an award.

      (Quote)

  37. If Ashley swapped Pardew for Lee Clark tomorrow, how many people would be unhappy? I think they’d be more worried that Ashley chops and changes like the wind and that’s not good for any club.

      (Quote)

  38. B+B I get some of what you say but I honestly can’t see any good manager coming here to not be given what funds are needed to compete in the games we have, The Regime didn’t back Pards in the summer window when we had such a super chance to kick on and Pards is friends of the deadly duo, so if he can’t get funds how’s any other manager going to get backing from them ?
As for 343 I honestly think Pards does go out of his way to protect the Regime with statements like that, but I think he will need to learn quickly that they are making a mug of him and he needs to stop giving us PR **** from them, or he could find a lot of Fans turning on him as a Regime puppet.
Were you surprised at the Chrons poll that 95% of fans backed Pards ❓

      (Quote)

  39. B+B > ” We can attract top managers and we can get one as and when they become available ”
I am not trying to trap you but am really interested in who you could see that would be willing to work for the Regime under their current plan.

      (Quote)

  40. Here is another interestin Pards quote
“This summer was tough.” “I convinced Mike and the board that we needed another year with this team.” “We deserved that after last year. So we kept it all together, some big clubs came in but they are going to have to pay a lot of money for our players. Trust me, we don’t sell anyone cheap.”

So going by that Jabba was wanting to sell only Pards convinced him not to sell ?? so that says to me that The Regime really don’t have any ambitions to grow, but that they would prefer to sell ? and some think that the Regimes running of the club and it’s blueprint are good 👿

      (Quote)

  41. Dave – I see top managers as being the ones who can work on a shoestring anyway, like Brian Clough did at Nottingham Forest. I can’t be on with these managers who keep saying we need to spend to cover up their own failings.

NUFC is one of the top clubs in Europe when it’s doing well. Good managers would walk on hot coals to manage us. I am surprisd our own fans don’t see what a fantastic club this is and what that means to ambitious managers.

I’d like to ask fans how many of other clubs’ squads they would have preferred at NUFC at the start of this season. Man City’s, Man Utd’s, Chelsea’s …etc?

      (Quote)

  42. We don’t need a TOP manager ,we just need an tactically astute manager, someone who would play to individual players strengths and not force a system they can’t play on them. 😉 .That’s supposing we are gonna change managers like. 😉

      (Quote)

  43. BB …yeah, but name me a “top manager” as such.

I wouldn’t be happy with Lee Clark,as he hasn’t proven himself yet. Maybe his time will come, but not yet.

Regarding worst manager awards, fortunately Martin O’Neil would be winning that one … 😆

      (Quote)

  44. B+B well there isn’t much chance of us getting Brian Clough and to use him is a bit ott 😯 as IMO they don’t make them like that anymore because the game has changed so much
I’m not being funny but if I said we needed a better CB or other players I would name a couple of examples of the type of player we should be going for.

But as I said can you name one manager that you could see would be willing to run the Toon with no real backing from the Regime ❓

      (Quote)

  45. 😯 here is another one in the dailyfail and this one has got me baffled

‘We are not actually too far away from that fifth, sixth place – probably the same as we are from the relegation zone.
‘That’s where our season is right now.’

Can someone tell him we are 4 pts of the relegation zone and 9 away from WBA in 5th 🙄 Some of the **** he comes out with amazes me

Absolutely love this blog. It’s been a godsend for me. 😛
    It’s all written down. 😉

You suggest I got the wrong end of the stick and you suggest the list of bloggers also did, but only because of our to & fro debates that give the other readers you meant something different. 😛 wow! You really don’t credit them as well. How do you know they haven’t read your posts?
You were having debates with those as well and they were under the impression you wanted him sacked. We all did. 😯 😯 😯

You really need to look at your style of debating. It loses everybody. 🙄 🙄 🙄

As I’ve said previously, your point of view is illogical. You don’t rate Pardew as a manager. You believe it’s inevitable that he will be sacked sooner rather than later. You want him to resign now. BUT, you want to give him time in case you are wrong. However you also believe that there will be many quality managers with proven track records willing to walk hot coals to manage us.

You still haven’t named one manager despite numerous people asking you for over a week. 🙄

You wonder I refuse to debate anything with you unless its written down.

As I keep saying, you are all over the shop and you still fail to see it. 😆

Wierd thing paint fumes ,I had been painting all week and it always makes me remember my dreams and give me a funny tummy 😆

  56. Munich-I was actually about to say, watching the Scum’s match and the rest of those I’ve seen of him this season, he’s been their best player in almost all of them. Loaning or signing would be nice, but I’d be surprised if Spurs would want to let him go, it’s just that he needs to develop but won’t get a game ahead of Ekotto.

Though personally, I’m not sure what position Santon prefers. We should aim to fill whichever he doesn’t.

  58. Newkie, put the lad in at left back, and let Santone tear up the right wing. We’ll probably end up with the Dutch lad Pieters though, cos he’ll cost nowt at the end of the season…

Though Santone looks good cutting in from the left wing and letting one of those power shots go, I still feel he is better defensively on the right hand side. He often gets caught out defensively at left back, though there is no doubting his attacking abilities..

Poor you Kimtoon, sounds like a nightmare to me that one 🙁

  59. Munich ,your not wrong mate. I could never do hard drugs god only knows what I’d do/dream ,paint fumes are bad enough 😉

  60. Kim 😆 Some cheeky ****** like Richie might bring up metaphorical interpretations of Pards in your garden, but I’m far too classy for that like 😉

Munich-I know what you mean about getting caught out defensively, but I’m not sure whether that’s to do with being on the left rather than the right. I don’t really think its the tackle he struggles in-which is what you might expect from being wrong footed. More that, after his forays forward, he’s slow to track back. Not much of a problem when Jonas is on hand, but as he hasn’t been this season, we’ve been found out quite often on the left. He likes cutting in and shooting, whenever I’ve seen him get forward on the right he looks lost, doesn’t seem to have the confidence to dribble to the byline, and so far his crosses have been average.
