Game On! Fulham v Newcastle

Game On at Craven Cottage
Another Monday night and another Premier League game involving Newcastle United being broadcast around the world takes place this evening, but will the result be in the same direction as the last one?

That last one being a rather comfortable 3-0 victory over ten man Wigan Athletic at St James’ Park a week ago. It perhaps wouldn’t have been as comfortable as the scoreline suggested had the visitors had a full compliment of players, but a win is a win and it’s points on the board we so badly need.

The win last week was annoying though as we failed to move up any places in the table. It’s valued all the same, but to win a game and not move up the table feels as though you are running on a treadmill, trying to go the right way but ultimately not going anywhere. Tonight though at least a victory would move us up one place leapfrogging Fulham in the process but it will be a tough ask as detailed in my match preview which you can view by clicking the blue text.

The good news in that preview is the potential return of a number of key players such as Davide Santon, Demba Ba and Cheik Tiote, who were all left at home for the trip to Bordeaux midweek, along with a potential return to action for Hatem Ben Arfa who has missed the last few games with a hamstring strain. Of course the only way we’ll find out who is fit is by looking at the official team news which will be added in below as and when it becomes available.

As mentioned at the very top, we are being broadcast globally this evening so hopefully there will be streams available for those who aren’t fortunate enough to be at Craven Cottage this evening, for those outside of the UK or for those inside the UK who don’t have access to Sky TV. Normal rules apply with regard to posting links for fellow NUFC fans.

Which just about wraps this up really as I don’t need to add much more. Needless to say I’m hoping for a committed performance from the start this time and I’d also quite like to see Damien Duff not turn into Superman just because he is playing us. A result would be nice also…

Howay the lads!

  1. Summary – Far too many players just not good enough at the basics,

Srtikers have no compatibility with each other,

Mid Field just continually give the ball away.

Manager does not have a clue, would not give him a penny to spend.

Prospects – its going to be a long hard slog to get out of a relegation battle, its time for Ashley to bite the bullet.

  2. The performance was good , the effort was excellent but a lack of quality at the back was yet again their for all too see . We need a Ryan Shawcross type too help Collo out in the middle and Debuchy instead of Simpson .

      (Quote)

  3. At least there was some effort there. In fact I’d say that’s about the best they’ve played all season. A draw would have been a fair result. There’s just no killer punch up front.

      (Quote)

  4. Well we have to hope for something from QPR as citeh is a write off befor it’s happened looking at our defence.

      (Quote)

  5. Overall I’m heartened. We’ve been improving in recent weeks and if we keep going like that results will come. I’m less worried now than I have been all season.

  7. Kimtoon

Sidwell was allowed to be a menace as that idiot, Mason, was allowing every niggly foul to go unpunished. Sidwell must have committed about 7 or 8 of these.

  8. Kim @ 156 forget it.
QPR will get their first 3 points against us GUARRANTEED
Redknap will be made out to be the messiah blah blah blah.
In truth tho its us, we are fucking ****. end of.

      (Quote)

  9. I thought Anita was our best player today. He is really looking the part. Getting used to the pace of this league and did really well against the high pressure/intensity of Fulham. He coped better than Tiote to be honest.

      (Quote)

  10. Toonsy, not been nasty about it, but think you should take the blinkers off, Fulham had not scored for 5 hours, against us they scored 2.

We have only won one of our last 10 games, how many of those were really against what we might call top teams, 2 I think.

Games to come Man City, Arsenal, Man Utd, can you see a win in any of those, at the end of Xmas we could well be in the mire -hope not.

Yeh may be a gloomy comment but factual and the outcome a probability

      (Quote)

  11. Toonsy @ 158 – what have you seen that has given you so much hope?
Tiote is **** jonas is a joke our defence is **** our strikers are **** and Pardew hasn’t got a clue.
    Magic.

      (Quote)

  12. Toonsy – so is that a hard and fast rule like?
Even at 70% fitness the bloke had more influence on the game than the likes of Jonas. I’m sorry like but when you’re loosing a game, you don’t take your most influential players off and put a striker on who just doesn’t score goals.
Personally I’d have give him another 10mins to see if he could have made something happen for a second.
Pardew hasn’t got a fucking clue man!, and the man said it himself, loose tonight and we are in a relegation battle!.

      (Quote)

  13. Well, I didn’t expect anything so I’m not surprised. Jonas had his best game for us tonight I thought. Our strikers need to do more to get on the end of the chances we make, nobody seems to want to attack the ball as they should, they just stand around about 6-8 yards out when we’ve sent the ball wide.

      (Quote)

  14. Man city will destroy us and tear us a new one.
Young Anita must wonder wtf he has come to.
I feel so sorry for him. The only player who knows how to pass and move. Keeping the ball on the ground too.
why do we keep punting the ball in the box in the air, when we NEVER win any headers. Utter tosh tactic. But we never vary it.

      (Quote)

  15. Yes our defence is **** and our strikers don’t gel together BUT there was a team spirit out there tonight a real desire just little end result again. That gives me hope Pards subs and tactics however are another matter. 🙄

      (Quote)

  16. Given the way Shola played against Bordeaux to put him on the bench ahead of Ranger is a laugh. And how come Jonas is still starting? I am beginning reluctantly to think that Pardew wouldn’t recognise a footballer if it bit him on the ****.

      (Quote)

  17. A good effort tonight but not enough. Ben Arfa was brilliant at times. It looked to me as though Tiote had an injury but the giveaway to Berbatov in the first half was horrendous. They probably should have scored at least 3 with the chances they had. Colo had an excellent game and even pushed forward and had 2 of our best chances. Still a worrying run of games ahead and probably not too many points in store for us. Cisse just doesn’t provide enough in the 4-4-2 formation. He looks lost most of the time. Krul was tremendous in goal but where are the points going to come from? Still very worried about the coming games.

      (Quote)

  18. I think not having a Suarez/Tevez/Defoe type striker is a problem. Ba and Cisse aren’t the answer. But Anita is getting better. I’d like to see him and Cabaye together – there’d be a bit of energy there.

It’s not as gloomy as some are suggesting, but it’s going to be a struggle, if some decent spark isn’t brought in in January.

Whoa, Pirates v Chiefs on telly. South African football. Haven’t seen that before.

      (Quote)

  19. @169 for me, marv should have been given the nod over jonas… i feel the same as everyone else… he’s a headless chicken who doesn’t know how to cross, shoot, etc. total and utter *****.

      (Quote)

  20. Football is a funny old game and be honest, who thought we would be like this last season? I did. God Fulham are hopeless at the moment, we had to get something there and they couldn’t. How is Jonas getting picked? The guy is finished, he wasn’t the greatest to start with but now he has lost his pace and his stamina, I don’t care if people say otherwise about the stamina thing, quite frankly they’re wrong. All he does is drop to the ground to win a free kick, Shearer used to do that all the time in his mid-thirties because he couldn’t get past anybody, the guy is finished, he was lucky not to get a card when he threw himself to the ground with no contact from their player. When he crosses the ball it’s straight at the keeper or to no-one. Williamson and Simpson have no confidence at all on the ball at this level and giving possession away cheaply is unacceptable. I can’t believe they think Williamson is good enough and Collo and S.Taylor are the only 2 ‘purples’ we are allowed. Steven Taylor is injured half the time and has been for years now. We should be enjoying the Mackem’s struggles but we can’t because we are nearly as bad. 🙁

      (Quote)

  21. so 3 points from last 6 games.
    west ham nowt
    swansea nowt
    southampton nowt
    stoke nowt
    wigan win
    fulham nowt
    fucking hillarious

      (Quote)

  22. Have to agree with those that say Anita is steadily improving. I liked the look of him when he arrived but was worried about his slight build. He will get pushed around by the stronger midfields in the league now and then but definitely worth giving him a go. Shola was hopeless other than to give up free kicks. He has lost all form again. Just not consistent enough and getting too old. Why did we extend his contract? Lots of question marks this season and Pardew has few answers so far.

      (Quote)

  23. The problem is even if It will be good to preserve Benny, why not Marveaux at his place? Why Shola? we already have 2 guys upfront very useless, why add another one even more useless?
Pardew needs to understand its better to have Marveaux as left or right winger than CIsse or Ba.
Put one of them in the bench and if the other guy just change him by the other you let on the bench.
Jonas is just a joke at the moment cannot control a ball, doesn’t help defensively….
I prefer to not speak about williamson a guy who ball at his feet is even worse that a non professional player.
At for me Santon in the left is a problem, prefer to put him on the right, we are the only club in the league with a left back who is right footed. He just cannot cross, even if he is good and i like him as a player

      (Quote)

  24. We’ve had 1 win in 6 games!! 3 points from a possible 18 and people are talking positively and are encouraged by what they are seeing?!
Am I missing something here or does out scoring the opposition still win games?!, playing abit better than last time means nowt man.

      (Quote)

  25. To add to the Jonas debate he definitely looks overweight to me. He has lost a step or more. Is he taking training seriously now or has he retired in his own mind to enjoy the remainder of his contract? Definitely should be out of the starting lineup and forced to earn his way back in. I would rather see Marveaux in there becuase he still has pace and will only improve with playing time. Not sure what is going to happen with Tiote either. His focus seems to be shot this season.

      (Quote)

  26. You’re kidding yourself if you think we didn’t deserve to lose that. Absolutely kidding yourself.

I’ve said time after time on this blog that we need to get shirt tight at the back in the centre and stop giving away needless free kicks at the edge of our box! It is the manager’s responsibility to ram this home. 😈

      (Quote)

  27. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew: “It’s a really soft second goal. Soft defensively on the free-kick and you can’t do that as this level. We had the game by the scruff of the neck at that point. We played some of the best attacking play of the season, really, but we still come away with nothing. In the second half we were terrific, other than two or three moments.”

Pardew on his team’s away form: “We’ve conceded poor goals at crucial times and away from home it’s costly. I genuinely believe we’ve been unlucky at times. I thought there was a lot right with our team tonight, good balance.”

      (Quote)

  28. Pardew – “at home we are a threat to any team – trust me”
    wtf ?????
    prepare for more humiliation
    good night

      (Quote)

  29. Good comments HBA39 @179. Santon could have a huge impact if we could put him on the right behind Ben Arfa but who would we play at left back? We just don’t have anyone which makes our right side with Willo and Simpson horribly weak. Stop pushing Willo up the field for corners Pardew he is absolutely hopeless at heading in the attacking zone. Leave him back and make a new plan for corners. Colo’s header was about the best effort we’ve had all season! Unbelievably poor set pieces on average. Surely this can be practised over and over until it improves? What are the coaches doing?

      (Quote)

  30. BLACKLEY & BROWNLIE
Jonas got found out at international level at the world cup. Maradona said he was the first 3 players on the team sheet. Then he turned up and they realised he was no where near the level of the other players and he hasn’t been back since. A player that doesn’t really have a position (certainly not a left winger in my opinion) is never going to be good enough at the highest level. Enrique made him look better than he is IMO and we should have got rid of him after Enrique left. What is he on a 3 year contract or something? I dread to think. 😕

  32. Pardew more and more seems to be in a fantasy land to me. If we don’t beat QPR by at least 2 or 3 goals and we lose the rest of our games in December Pardew will have a very difficult time of it. If we had an owner with plums we wouldn’t be in this mess right now. Pardew is being backed into a corner by our play and not reacting well at all. Delusional talk from him isn’t going to help.

      (Quote)

  33. About time some harsh words were said like because they are unacceptably poor atm. I don’t get these people that have to be ‘fans’ all the time and have a ray of sunlight coming out of their backside all the time.

  34. BTW that was our best performance of the season………
    ………and we still lost.
    suck it up fellas.
Time for Dekka and Jabba to smell the coffee.
this club’s on the move, and it isn’t UP.

      (Quote)

  35. Yes Jonas just had his contract extended to 2015 DJG @187. Together with the extension of Shola’s contract it shows the true brilliance of Llambias in action. What an MD we have there! Clubs must be lining up to try and steal him from us.

      (Quote)

  36. Is it possible to send a copy of this blog to Pardew,

If those are his comments in #184 then, then he is definitely ready for the funny farm, a non existent strike force, a left wing that cannot cross the ball, and as for my favourite player well Shola you capped another fine performance tonight by doing nowt – but there again you are fully paid up member of the ‘Pardew is great club’. Three articles quoting Shola in tonights Chronicle -a reporters dream, now how about trying it on pitch, football is your day job.

      (Quote)

  37. My big concern is that Pardew could be handed £50m in Jan to spend, but if he keeps getting it wrong the way he is it won’t solve our problems.
The blokes loyalty to Jonas is just beyond a joke now like, and he has now played Shola and Cisse on the right of an attacking midfield three – neither worked. Yet he just refuses to move Ba from up front. It doesn’t make sense!, it does not work man.
Ive said in the past that sacking Pardew would be the wrong thing to do, but if he keeps making the same mistakes then he needs to go man!.

      (Quote)

  38. @193 might not be able to send a copy of this blog, but somehow, we need them to hear us out. we don’t like what we see and things need to change quick and fast before it’s too late. time and time again we see what is wrong with this team and we’re never heard. sick and tired of this *****.

  39. would be pointless there are no pictures and the useless kunt cant read.
He would have to get carver to read it out loud for him.
    👿 😆

      (Quote)

  40. Sharpy dont let Troy hear you calling for Pardews head.
He’ll be on to you, and he wont let go.
    Even tho you are right.

      (Quote)

  41. Sharpy totally agree, Jonas’s lip service to Pardew and Pardew’s loyalty to Jonas has gone beyond the realms of plausibility and into the realms of being a complete joke now. In fact it’s getting beyond a joke and to the point where other players will cause unrest.

      (Quote)

  42. Boots – I think Troy also wants Pardew out, but doesn’t believe there is anyone better than Pardew who’d be prepared to work under Ashley and his band of half wits. At least that was the impression I got the other day, and to be honest I agreed with it. But seeing Jonas in there again tonight and his refusal to move Ba from up front to try something different in attack is just hugely naive and tactically inept.

Toonsy – regarding Benny ALWAYS coming off coz he’s just come back from injury. So had Santon, Ba and Jonas!. Yet Jonas – who was garage in comparison, and had only returned to training yesterday (if reports were correct) played the full game 😕 – kinda pisses on your theory I’d have thought mate.

      (Quote)

  43. BB@197. Well I notice non of them have made an appearance tonight, would get laughed out of court mate. Tonight proved that thinks are NOT good enough and we are NOT okay. We have got to get a good hiding off the better teams now. Man C, Man U, Arsenal still to come in December 😳

      (Quote)

  44. What price QPR and Harry get their first win of the season against us? In fact I think I’ll put money on it. They haven’t even been that bad the games I’ve seen.

      (Quote)

  45. Can’t deal with another week of “Pardew out” shouts. It’s just nonsense. Sure if Martinez or someone could come then that would be brilliant.. IF. Pardew has been ***** this year, but come on man… Joe Kinnear 😯 Shivers down my spine.

      (Quote)

  46. Pardew criticised Benny for not being up to it. He wasn’t faultless by any means, but he was still our best player by far. He very nearly pulled Pards out of the ***** yet again, and that’s the thanks he gets. Benny’s brilliance has made up for our poor team play all too often pardew. Same goes for Krul. Not one mention from Pards about the outstanding stops from Krul. All he can say is that we played some of the best attacking play of the season and were triffic! 👿

      (Quote)

  47. When Derby were relagated a while back with, what was it – 9 pts? the only team they beat was Newcastle. It wouldn’t surprise me if QPR won.

      (Quote)

  48. Strumpo – What you on about, nonsense? Its nonsense to say you don’t want Pardew out and then in the same post say, but it would be brilliant if Martinez or someone could come! As for Joe Kinnear. Forget f*&^**^ Joe Kinnear. That is never going to happen! Where do you get that from? 🙄

      (Quote)

  49. bb, has the time come to for pardew out? im getting close now, his subs were pathetic. Let alone starting jonas again, really do feel sorry for ben arfa.

      (Quote)

  50. Bris – hadn’t Tiote just come back from a ‘strain’?.

ST – sorry to put you thro another week of it, but people go on about lack of investment and that’s right to a degree. But Lpool gave Dogleash millions to spend and because he was clueless, it didn’t improve them at all – probs the opposite. I’m not suggesting Pardew will get as much as Kenny, but he certainly seems as clueless at the moment.

B&B – did Pardew say that of Benny tonight?

      (Quote)

  51. Expected to pick up a point here, but never mind. We’re in the mid-table now, and we’ll finish there, too.

      (Quote)

  52. WELLINGTON
You reckon we’ll finish mid table the way things are going? We are still a win or 3 draws away from 20 points and half way to safety, it’s nearly Christmas. Have you seen the fixture list between now and Jan?

      (Quote)

  53. DJG@211 – I’m expecting a win against QPR and reinforcements in January. Is that so far-fetched?

      (Quote)

  54. @B&B
    Are you joking?
Erm, how about the last time we were in a similar situation.
    @Sharpy
Not denying he looks clueless. Just 99% sure we couldn’t/wouldn’t do better. Performances are at least showing some desire now. We just need to pray that we beat QPR and keep our heads above water until Jan and then see some reinforcements.

      (Quote)

  55. ST – not denying the players are starting to do there bit mate, but when Pards is getting it so wrong with the initial selection and then again with the subs. Can you imagine how disheartened the players would have been seeing Shola coming on for our most creative outlet tonight. Then with 5mins to go, Bigi and Marv are introduced – really what is the point in that FFS?!
The players can work hard and do their bit but if they are being misled it won’t save us.

      (Quote)

  56. I didn’t watch the match as is a 4am match for me. 😕

Did Jonas play as winger again?? In my opinion he should be station in midfield than out wide player.

Always sad to see newcastle lose, but i gonna trust pardew one last time and hope that genuinely there are really new players coming in by Jan.

      (Quote)

  57. Wellington – it’s not far fetched to think we could beat QPR and sign 1 or 2 players in Jan, but If you think that beating QPR and signing a couple of players is going to change our season around and result in us bagging enough points to finish mid table – then yeah, I think it’s fair to fair fetched.
It’s also not too far fetched to think that we could also loose a couple of players in Jan either mate, Ba and Simpson being highly possible.

      (Quote)

  58. Have always said it Pardew is illogical. Cisse out wide? What attributes does he have to play there? Marv played well against Wigan why not have him there?

He subs HBA I assume to keep him fresh for City? We had a greater probability of getting something from this game than we have getting anything against city.

He says he feels we have been very unlucky this season, that’s it right there. His tactic is luck. Where are his players Marv, Amalfitano his purchases. Instead he is relying on a Hughton purchase.

He should take a leaf out of Hughton’s book. Have a game plan not just select the same players and hope for the best.

Poor, very poor from him. 4 wins in 16 games.

      (Quote)

  59. Dave, in case you missed it on previous thread that had been long superceded when posted:

Talk in last week for a select few box owners; about 100 fans in all.

Pardew went absolutely ballistic, spat the dummy out, swore, and refused to answer any more questions after someone had the temerity to say that long term contracts breed complacency, the team and manager appear to be complacent, and to ask Llambias whether there is any get out clause in Pardew’s contract. Good on Pardew for showing so much passion! The pressure’s getting to him though!

Llambias confirmed there were absolutely no get out clauses and the future success of the club is down to long term stability.

HBA and Ba love NUFC and are extremely happy here. If they stay, it will be because the fans show so much apreciation for them. Llambias praised Ba because he negotiates such a tough contract and it is by no means certain that NUFC can meet his demands in January.

HBA was impressed beyond belief that Llambias and Ashley visited him in hospital in France after his operation in Manchester went wrong.

They intend to appoint a new PR man from the US after Xmas. It’s not Beckham. They said the communication with the fans had got out of hand when Mort was here and Mike and Mort would meet the fans in pubs. It all turned sour.

Llambias re-itterated that they would not pay over the odds for players. They were delighted to get Anita. It was a difficult task to prise such a player away from a club like Ajax. It took an enormous amount of time and effort as many such transfers do. The fans under-estimate the size of the task.

My mate was very impressed with what he heard from the regime, which was entirely reasonable in his opinion.

      (Quote)

  60. Strumpo – Kinnear’s had f*&^ health issues man. And the regime wouldn’t be so stupid twice. They brought Kinnear in like they changed the name of the ground. So when they brought their real man in, people would be thankful! He could have appointed him after Hoots if he had wanted to but didn’t! They still put it out as a scare tactic!

      (Quote)

  61. Sharpy @ 209: Obviously the severity of the strain is a factor and what you strain is too. Hamstring and groin strains are awful and they hang around for a long time and keep coming back if you don’t look after them. Little tweaks and strains happen all the time.

I have no doubt that HBA came off as protection against exacerbating his injury. Why Shola came on instead of somebody else I leave for you guys to argue/complain about. I’d have preferred Marveaux but I can see why Shola came on – he often wins headers.

The manager is always on a hiding to nothing when his team loses – and is a tactical genius when it comes off. Pardew is often criticised for being too defensive, well, today he had 3 centre forwards and the team pushed on for a fair bit of the 2nd half and he still gets stick. It’s far far easier to manage a game with hindsight.

      (Quote)

  62. Interesting 244 system we played today. 😯 Although Cisse isn’t a midfielder 😉

Average player positions are such an eye-opener at times.

      (Quote)

  63. My sentiments were pretty much summed up by Michael 12 @217

Cisse out wide? Surely there are better options.
Shola on for Ben Arfa??? Surely Marv had to come on? In fact I can’t understand why Marv didn’t come on for Jonas when we switched to 4-4-2 because Jonas was pathetic all night.
He broke down every offensive attack with a poor pass, or he twists and falls on his **** occassionally winning a set piece which we are **** at anyway!

Anyway, we at least played slightly better football, but so many silly mistakes too.
I lost count of the amount of times Tiote gave possession away in the first half. I guess he needs more game time. But for me Cabaye is the far safer and better option as a holding midfielder.

After slating him previously I thought Simpson was outstanding on the night.
Covered for Willo on several occasions and put in some superb crosses that never found anyone because we always only had one player to aim for in the box. We need midfielders pushing up in support!

Krul was excellent on the night. Then Ben Arfa and Simpson was our next best player. Thought Anita did well too.

What the fudge Shola is still doing playing in the Premier League is just a plain and simple joke. Both he and Willo ooze Div One in ability.

      (Quote)

  64. As for the “looked better” ****…

Last year it was, “we didn’t play well but we won – thats a sign of a good team”.

This year its “we played well but we were unlucky to lose, or we played poorly and got thumped”… – surely thats the sign of a team in disarray.

      (Quote)

  65. It sounds terrible but the second Ben Arfa came off for Shola, I knew the game was lost…
Sammi doesn’t give me any more confidence. I don’t want anymore Ameobi’s near the first team squad at NUFC.

      (Quote)

  66. tiote needs dropping with willo both total liabilities. Marv should of started for the inactive Jonas (although he got forward a bit more)

More points dropped thru Tiote’s papness. I doubt we’d get 8mil for him now
