Newcastle v Manchester City – Premier League match preview

The proper United v City
Newcastle take on reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at St James’ Park tomorrow lunchtime, with both clubs hopeful of bouncing back from defeat in their last game.

The home side lost 2-1 at Fulham on Monday night whilst Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City lost the Manchester derby to Manchester United.

While both sides are undoubtedly looking for a win, the three point reward would come in very handy for differing reasons. Newcastle need to pull an unlikely result out of the bag in attempt to pull away from the relegation spots whilst Manchester City will be looking for the three points to keep them in touch with their arch-rivals from the other side of Manchester at the top of the table.

Newcastle:

Hatem Ben Arfa made a scoring return at Craven Cottage on Monday after missing the previous four games with a hamstring problem. Unfortunately it would appear that he aggravated the injury against Fulham and is now doubtful for the visit of City tomorrow.

Also sidelined are Yohan Cabaye, Steven Taylor, Dan Gosling, Haris Vuckic and Ryan Taylor although Gabriel Obertan is edging closer towards being available once again*.

Manchester City:

Vincent Kompany is unlikely to play after being give only a “2% chance” of making the game by Roberto Mancini. Gareth Barry is suspended while former Magpie James Milner misses out with a hamstring injury. Also sidelined are Micah Rochards, Jack Rodwell and Aleksandar Kolarov.

Previously…

It’s been seven years since we last beat Manchester City. That win came back in September 2005 courtesy of a single goal by Michael Owen. Since that victory we’ve managed just two draws in eleven games against the Citizens.

At St James’ Park we have the upper hand in terms of historical meetings. There have been 82 games played in all competition at St James’ Park and Newcastle have won 50 of them. Manchester City have won on 15 occasions with 17 draws making up the numbers over the years. Our biggest ever home victory over City came back in October 1983, with United running out 5-0 winners on that occasion.

Overall, home and away in all competitions, United have the upper hand but it’s much closer. Of 165 meetings between the two sides, Newcastle have won 70, Manchester City have won 57 matches with the other 38 ending in a draw.

Match stats and facts…

Newcastle are poor in the month of December. We’ve lost 41 matches played in this month, more than any other Premier League team in the entire history of the competition.

It’s been 61 games since Newcastle have turned a half-time deficit into a full-time victory.

Newcastle are ten point worse off than we were at the same stage last season.

On a smaller scale but along the same lines, City are yet to win in December.

Mancini’s men have kept clean sheets in their last three away matches. They have never kept four away clean sheets in a row. Ever.

City have not lost back-to-back Premier League matches for over two years.

Final thought…

This is one of those games where expectations of a result amongst the fan base remain low. With Newcastle on such a dire run of form and City full of strength the conception is that we’ll get turned over at St James’ Park tomorrow.

Maybe we will, maybe we won’t, but I’m not expecting anything other than defeat. Obviously I’d like us to give it a go and get the three points but the way we’ve been playing I just can’t see it. Stranger things have happened though…

Howay the lads!

  1. I have to be honest, I see a cricket score tomorrow like – and not to us.
Our back 4 have struggled against little pacey CFs this season and if Mancini plays Tevez and Aguero, Silva and Nasri – we are seriously ‘F’ed!!
Yaya tore us apart last season as well and I think it’s his last game before the ACoNs, so he’ll probably want to sign off with a big performance.
Fortunately I’m at work tomorrow or I’d be watch this one from behind the sofa.

  2. A very tough fixture in our current form. I don’t really listen to Pardew anymore. It sounds pathetic. Now he says we’re not a long ball team (I guess I must have listened). Bollocks Alan the stats don’t lie. Willo has to hoof the ball any time he feels any pressure whatsoever. Teams know that now. A little pressure on Willo and they almost always get the ball back. We don’t have decent hold up men now either. Cisse almost never controls a long pass. He wants the ball around the box from a short pass, not from 50 yards away. Simpson retreats and gives wingers miles of space and is often out of position when the ball comes down the other wing. I think he doesn’t trust Willo to do his job but it pushes him too close to the centre of the field. We will continue to be in deep trouble if we don’t replace those two in January. Things have to be sorted out with Ba and Cisse as well.

  3. Re: Stats don’t lie.

That only don’t lie when you want to believe them. No stats tell the full story 😉

  4. Stats can be misused I agree toonsy but surely anyone can see we resort to the long pass from the back especially from Willo far too much, And Jonas has been invisible in midfield for large parts of many games. Tiote has to cover too much ground and when pressed he makes mistakes with his passes. The confidence seems to have completely disappeared from the side. I wish I had the answers but I think we will have to suffer for the most part until January and then it is “hold your breath, will Ashley spend?” all over again. What a way to run a club. 😥

  5. I would be overjoyed with a draw. I just can’t see it. Tevez and Aguero running at Willo and Simpson? Sounds like a horror show to me. Colo will be over-worked trying to cover for Willo and if Santon tries to push up it will make us even more vulnerable to the counter-attack. We need a workhorse to help Tiote out in midfield and some clever holdup play from the forwards but will we get it? I hope so.

      (Quote)

  6. I also wish instead of aiming every set play at williamson from corners and free kicks wish they would use williamson to block the keeper instead might be more productive for us

      (Quote)

  7. G2 ime not hoping much from this game mate but one thing for sure if we sit back against this team we will get well thumped imo, really dont see a way round this one 🙁

      (Quote)

  8. ICEDOG
i think newcastle will sit back, said summer time you could not play collo and williamson in an attacking high line, cause simply with that tactic against pace you likey to get beat by a larger margin cause i could out run them 2 meself even at 47 lol 🙁

      (Quote)

  9. I’m really not looking forward to this game I can sense a bit of a hiding coming our way and this could be it 😳 or we could maybe give them a run for their money 😆 😆 😆
    Ice you have mail 😉

      (Quote)

  10. G2 – I agree that Colo is generally over worked when he’s alongside Willo, and I think Colo is a good player. But against quick tricky CFs he’s been getting shown up this season mate, with or without Willo. He was turned inside out by Suarez before getting himself sent off and wasn’t close to Jerome for Stokes 2nd.
Willo will be he usual liable self tomorrow I’m sure, but against the likes of Tevez, Aguero, Nasri and Silva, I think Colo will be chasing the shadows Willo will be chasing.

      (Quote)

  11. SHARPY17
you missed collo was partly to blame for fulhams 1st goal also will admit tiote was partly to blame also but a good defender would of took the ball the man and the turf with him in that situation

      (Quote)

  12. or was it the 2nd goal but collo was at fault for both there goals so no dont agree that hes a good defender hes far off being a good defender now should of cashed in on him summer time

      (Quote)

  13. TAE – yeah I’d agree with that mate. I’m just expecting a bit of a Willo bashing Tom again, and whilst I agree he isn’t good enough, he can’t be blamed for all of our defensive frailties this season. To suggest that Colo has been poor just coz he’s been paired with Willo is letting him off the hook way too lightly from what I’ve seen like.

      (Quote)

  14. TAE – you sneeked another post in there you little tinker. It looks like I’m agreeing about your suggestion of selling him in the summer – I don’t with that bit. I still think he’s an asset to our team and was emmense against the scum.
He’s not the player he was last season, and he now needs a quality strong defender alongside him, so THEY can cover him. Similar to how Carvalho was with Terry at Chelsea.

      (Quote)

  15. dos any1 here think tiote might be being read and has been sussed out,if you watch him close he always trys to go right with a spin and come away with the ball on the left side

      (Quote)

  16. TAE @ 16 are you talking about his famous pirouette he does a dozen times every game ❓

    Sharpy @ 14 I can’t believe your agreeing to shipping Colo out 😯 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  17. Dave – you gotta watch that TAE mind, he’s a reet . Can’t turn ya back for 2 minutes! 😉

TAE/Dave – I post this question on the last blog but think everyone moved onto this one, or ignored it so ill try again 😐
The papers have written Chelsea are sniffing round Tiote again

      (Quote)

  18. Sharpy that doesn’t look like a question it just looks like you saying the papers have written Chelsea are sniffing round Tiote again ❓ ❓

      (Quote)

  19. 😆 😆 😆 Sharpy would I flog him ? yes I would for good money because IMO he doesn’t represent good value for money for us cause we need a player that will play most games and with him he is injuried quite a bit and misses a fair few games due to ill discipline or we are walking on egg shells with him so that he doesn’t pick up more cards so that he doesn’t miss more games, although he has looked a different player over the last month or so after he came back from his last 3 game ban 😥

      (Quote)

  20. Dave – sorry mate, no idea what happened there – probably TAE which his Jedi mind tricks again 😕
It was meant to read, if we could get Sissoko in, who you be overly bothered if Tiote left, and how much would you say he’s worth now?

      (Quote)

  21. sorry have to disagree about Colo.
He is a vastly experienced CB, who reads the game brilliantly. He is a good tackler and defends well when an oponent is running at him with the ball. The only problem he has is with the long aerial ball over the top, which he struggles with. Willo is never there to help him out with these, but can be seen following the ball from a distance.
Willo is the main problem with our defence imo. He is, how should I put this. ❓ ****.
Simmo isn’t the best, and cant cross his legs, but when he sticks to defending does enough to get the job done.
Another problem with our defence, is that we are using our full backs as wingers, because our wingers are gash. But no one is covering for them when they go forward, leaving gaping great holes.
Santon and Jonas is typical of this. We urge Santon to get forward, but Jonas has his thumb up his **** and isnt covering behind him.
Its all down to **** poor coaching imo, and I think the players know it.
Pardew has been rumbled by his own players, and I think they aren’t happy with him.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see transfer requests going in soon.
    😯
Just my opinion of the day.

      (Quote)

  22. I also think we will be getting royally humped tomorrow.
    I can hear the ‘Boo’s’ already. 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  23. I was saying the other day that Tiote is getting like Parker with all his spins and turns.
Also he looks for the back pass more often than the thru ball.
I’m sick of the ball going back to krul.
I’ve seen us go from taking a corner and getting the ball back to Krul in 3 passes. 😯
    slick n all.

      (Quote)

  24. I would be surprised if Tiote was valued at any more than £8M. (in the real world ❗ ) so if Chelski offered anything like the afformentioned £15M, then I would hope jabba the **** would snap their hands off.
Dekka would try and hold out for £20M tho. (we dont know how nasty he can be.) and the deal would fall thru.
    Fucking clown.

      (Quote)

  25. BB have to agree with you about Colo. He is the best CB we’ve had for many a season. Many people were saying so last season and even at the beginning of this one but are off the bandwagon now. Willo is too slow to cover for Colo on high balls over their heads yet Colo clears for Willo many times a game and actually passes the ball on the ground to his team mates to boot. He has poise and vision but can’t stop everything. He is a little short to play against tall forwards but otherwise excellent. If we sell him and keep Willo I will know we are truly a lost cause. Bring in a big competent CB to partner Colo and see what happens. Our defense will be much better. Bring in a RB and a winger who can cross and we will actually have an attack (other than Ben Arfa when he is used there) on the right side. Bring in a forward with good ball control who can also pass and we will have a Prem quality attack. Expensive but absolutely essential.

      (Quote)

  26. Boots – I’m not saying that Colo is *****, but he is flawed, and those flaws have been exposed more this season. He didn’t read anything Suarez was doing and we all seen how good his tackling was against him, should have been a pen and he got sent off. He also didn’t read Jerome running past him for Stokes 2nd goal. He seems to struggle with pace. He’s a very good player who isn’t playing well at the mo, and it’s being highlighted more by Willos incompetence IMO.

      (Quote)

  27. The owner and MD have continued to fool themselves about the quality of our team probably with some help from Pardew (doing this really keeps the spending down doesn’t it Ashley?). Now they should see that talk of us having excellent quality on the bench is bollocks. We have a few youngsters who aren’t ready, a couple who are always injured and an older player who needs to pack it in (Shola). We have no useful depth at striker, and a struggling midfield. We have a relatively poor defensive 4 thanks mainly to Willo and Simpson. I’m having suspicions that Pardew isn’t great either. We have never come from behind to win with him as manager. Never! We have no set piece goals this season. Zero! We have completely unimaginative set pieces aimed mainly at Willo who is absolutely hopeless at doing anything with them. There are so many weak links right now that we couldn’t moor a dinghy.

      (Quote)

  28. G2@32, Amen to that, outside of Benny and Ba’s goals we have **** all to cheer about ,oh and some good stops from Krul too. There are too many not putting a shift in at the moment and a few who don’t belong at PL level as well. Add in a couple who are passed there best and it’s a recipe for disaster. 👿

      (Quote)

  29. BB. Yep. All of it. Our game play makes no sense, does not fitbthe typemof player we have. I’m no expert but I know hoof ball when I see it. No excuse for that with the continental blood we have sewn into our team, it’s as if they have landed these players by accident and have absolyy no clue how to set them out.

If he really has denied that we are currently a hoof ball team then he needs to go because words fail me.

Re: Colo. maybe he’s not world class but he’s the best we have had in a long, long time. It’s up to the manager and director to recruit somebody who can compliment his game.

Re: Colo. maybe he’s not world class but he’s the best we have had in a long, long time.       (Quote)

  31. Spot on Kimtoon and Shamrock. It’s not pretty but it has to be said. Ashley and Llambias are their own worst enemies and have made us a shambolic team with some help from Pardew. How do those 8 year contracts look now? Will Ashley really stand by Pardew if we get relegated or enter the last couple months of the season near the drop zone? Don’t count on it. He will bail and bring in another flunky who will take a low wage to try to revitalize his career. Bargain bin mentality. Bargain bin hires. Bargain bin league position.

  32. BB@35 ,The worst is yet to come ,starting tommorow I fear .I’m really concerned about our survival right now ,if we go down and unless things change drastically I think we will ,there is no way imo we can bounce back up like befor imo. 🙁

      (Quote)

  33. @36, I dontvreally understand the Boumsong reference. We need a good defence. Colo is a good defender. We cant have it all, we wont get any better than him considering our status in world football.

I dont give a fook what line our defence plays as long as they are effective. With the right signing next to him and a more technical approach to our midfield play, we would not need a high line so much…the team should be fluid and interchangeae when we are in attack mode, then work like fook chasing balls and closing down when not in possession. We almost had that last season to some extent. Why the free fall to the jurrasic caveman approach to the beautiful game i’ll never know…

  34. Man City have posted losses of £97m for 2011/12 season . The good news though is that it’s £100m better than the £197m losses they posted for the season before.
I’m not trying to **** them off before our game tomorrow, but with spends like that and they finish bottom of the CL group?!.
It’s frightening the difference in money between us and them like.

      (Quote)

  35. If it’s not a horror show tomorrow I will be happy and relieved but it won’t change anything contrary to what Pardew is saying. He is in a horrible spot now. Look at Arsenal who are 7th. They are promising Wenger plenty of money to improve the team in January. I think he will turn that team around again as usual and at least push hard for a Champions League spot again. What about us? Are we going to turn it around and move up into the top half of the table even? I very much doubt it now. I felt strongly that we were going to slide down this season but nothing like this! A combination of factors have contributed but Pardew has been very disappointing as well. I was never a big supporter of his and was shocked when we finished fifth last season. I’m not shocked that we are lower down the table this season but never expected to be in danger of relegation. For me this is Ashley’s last chance to set things right. Bring in several good players in January then wait a month to see what Pardew does with them. Pardew should only be sacked if we look clearly to be in danger of relegation but if he is sacked bring in a good manager with decent credentials and support him properly Ashley or get out!

  36. The only thing I can see happening is a nightmare on Elm street. 😐 It will probably be 0-2 after the first 10 minutes again.

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy
I can guarantee you that in their group Dortmund had a spend of around a third of City’s and Ajax were probably running on a profit (don’t know exact figures). Bottom line we’re still getting a thrashing tomorrow, cus Pards can’t play his team properly, Tiote will give away fouls/miss-pass in stupid positions and Willo won’t be able to turn 180 degrees before Aguero has run past him and slotted it into the net. HWTL 🙄 🙁 That’s right synical, realistic Andymag has returned, he killed positive, “I’m sure he’ll sign” , “Of course Cissé can bang in more than 15 goals a season” , “we can beat anyone” Andymag.

      (Quote)

  38. Bring in 1 player ice? Unbelievable at this point. If we were sitting 8th in the table with 23 points I would still say it’s not enough. It had better be a CB in that case. Pardew also said if we sell 1 we will bring in 2. That suggests to me he knows we are in danger of losing 1 or more of our best players. I’m going to turn completely grey at this rate. How are you managing mate?

      (Quote)

Stuffing, turkey and the roast potatoes 😕 🙁 , losing tomorrow will be the Yorkshire puddings gone 😥 .

  40. I’d distanced myself from the PL and Newcastle because I was becoming too upset at how **** we were doing and the teams that I hate are doing reasonably well. So I’ve been focussing on the Bundesliga and Dortmund for the last couple of months. In my honest opinion a more interesting league and incredibly underrated.

      (Quote)

  41. Andymag what do you think our main problem is? We’ve been discussing it almost non-stop this season but it would be good to get another fresh opinion. I still think the problems really began at the top with an unwillingness by the owner and MD to admit we weren’t deep enough. It all went downhill from there.

      (Quote)

  42. To be totally honest I’m just not looking forward to this game at all. The only reason I’m going is because I’m getting pissed before with my mate. Something tells me ill need to be pissed to watch it.

I just cannot see our defence not being absolutely pummelled tomorrow. If I was Pardew I’d just send them out to attack and just go for it.

      (Quote)

  43. Bloody horrible state to be in after last season! Now we dread facing good teams at home. Ridiculous but look at the results so far. Pardew says the team is working hard but I have to question that in some cases. Why does Jonas look like he has put 10 pounds on around his waist? He doesn’t look skinny and hungry anymore. What’s behind the loss in form of Tiote and Cisse? What can we do to take some points before January? Other than QPR it looks grim. Unless I see a big change tomorrow I will dread the rest of the 2012 games.

The slump has come down to many things
    1. Lack of investment in the summer leaving us short (we have quantity just not enough quality, this should’ve been addressed)
    2. Pardew’s tactics in insisting that we play Hoofball to two players who couldn’t out jump a toddler, being passed to by players that couldn’t hit water falling out of a boat)
    3. Injuries/tiredness with too many games in quick succession taking its tole, we experienced more than our fair share of injuries (this problem could’ve/should’ve been solved in the summer with signings)
    4. Disinterest and lack of confidence is being felt by the majority of the squad with many failing to live up to the standards set last season (with the exception of Santon and the new lads)
These factors all contribute to us being **** this season.

      (Quote)

  45. Well it’s not all doom and gloom for Jabba . Just been reading the money pullout in the Mirror and it’s lead story is -ASHLEY ‘NETS £39M BONUS’ tycoon in line for rich reward. Apparently he could get that in 2018 under a new bonus scheme. It’s a bit long winded but it’s in todays mirror page68 if anyone has it. I won’t put a link up as I always **** it up as Dave will testify 😆 .

  48. That’s a good summary Andymag @56. It points out all the same problems most of us have seen growing in the club since the summer. It things go bad early in the game tomorrow the boos might start to come out early. If we give them a good game from the start there will be no problem along those lines. It’s up to the lads to come out with fire in their bellies. Get stuck in right from the start lads!

  53. Look I know we have lost 5 in 6 but we must accept this is a defeat too. It may be heavy too but I know even if we so far replicated last season this was a game as a fan i would write off. So it is no surprise and will not count against Alan Pardew.

      (Quote)

  54. Micheal @67 ,Whilst what you say is true ,it will count against Pards if we don’t at least put up a fight and he employs dodgy tactics /late or wrong subs imo.

      (Quote)

  55. Sharpy17@41…..that happened cos Mancini got out manouvered by the tactics of the opposing managers. Dortmund battered City twice because they played a fast hard running game.

Just the same as Pardew is now struggling to get the team performing because clubs have sussed us out and are playing tactics which stifle us.

    On the earlier posts…

I don’t necessarily think long balls are a bad thing, in fact when you cannot defend against it then it’s pretty effective, the ball just needs to be delivered at the right time, with accuracy to the right player… Demba scored a cracker against Man U last year, flick on by Shola, in the net. Stoke out-done us with the same tactic a few weeks ago. however, none of our central strikers can handle the long ball to there heads, they are not strong enough to play that way, and that Pardew continues with this tactic is quite poor really. At the same time, for the defenders it is an easy way out, and gets the ball forward quickly and away from the danger zone. I think if the defenders had confidence in the midfielders, and vice versa, this long ball game would be cut out automatically… That’s also the reason for Tiote’s pirhouettes, he doesn’t want to give the ball away cheaply, so holds onto the ball until the right pas becomes available. The players need to be available to accept the pass, and Tiote needs to have the confidence to pass the ball to him. At the same time Tiote seems to have played a lot more loose passes this season.

Regarding Collo, he is not without blame in my opinion, there is no doubting he is a excellent footballing defender, but when a centre forward gets in his face then he will really struggle. His ability to defend headers is also suspect imo.

There are so many factors contributing to a poor season in my opinion… and we need to get it sorted out quickly. The fans are turning on Pardew now, and it’s nothing to do with being fickle or delusional after last seasons excellent top half finish. We all know that perhaps we overachieved last season, but the fall off this season is shocking.

  56. Andymag@51….. welcome to the real world matey 😉

Last week I watched the FC Bayern Dortmund game live, absolutely immense… Dortmund are brilliant and play a fantastic style of football which is great to watch.
