Bore draw! Norwich 0-0 Newcastle

No winners at Carrow Road
No winners at Carrow Road
Two poor sides played out an abysmal 0-0 draw at Carrow Road yesterday afternoon, although from a Newcastle United perspective it has to be viewed as a point gained.

That’s not a reflection on the game itself as both sides struggled to present any real goal threat but is instead more of a reflection on our form which has seen us fail to pick up points on far too many occasions this season.

Another couple of positive points were the fact that we kept a clean sheet – just the third of the season by my reckoning although that could be wrong – plus there was the reintroduction of Yohan Cabaye and a solid yet unspectacular debut from his pal Mathieu Debuchy. I’d also be tempted to say fair play to Fabricio Coloccini who put in a professional performance despite the speculation regarding his ongoing future at NUFC.

Newcastle did start brightly and put some early pressure on Norwich but the hosts soon woke up and matched the away side. It was Gabriel Obertan who had the first chance of the match in the 17th minute although Mark Bunn was equal to his snapshot and parried the ball away. Further chances for Papiss Cisse and Obertan again followed although neither were of any real danger to the Norwich goal.

At the other end Norwich didn’t really create much. Tim Krul had to be on hand to smother one through ball and James Perch tracked back excellently to take the ball off Wes Hoolahan’s toes just as the Norwich winger was about to pull the trigger eight yards out from goal.

As you can see, not a lot to write about in the first-half as Anthony Taylor blew for half-time ensuring the two sides went in at 0-0.

There were to be no changes for the start of the second-half as both sides remained unchanged although that did change ten minutes into the second period when Yohan Cabaye returned from injury at the expense of Gabriel Obertan. You know goalmouth action at both ends is scarce when you have to write a paragraph about a substitution!

Fabricio Coloccini and Sylvain Marveaux both had efforts for United although neither really threatened whilst at the other end Russell Martin struck the outside of Tim Krul’s post with a long-range effort and the Dutchman had to be on hand to smother Anthony Pilkington’s strike after the Norwich wideman danced into the United penalty area.

The best chance of the game cam in stoppage time as Norwich crossed deep into the box for Grant Holt to head back across goal nearly finding Pilkington at the back post although he was unable to direct his header on target.

Not a classic by any stretch of the imagination and you can see that both sides lack confidence. For a defence that has been leaking goals all season the clean sheet will do wonders for confidence and a point gained away from home in this league and in our situation is a good point in my eyes.

Next up we welcome Reading to St James’ Park next weekend in what is a must win game for both sides in fairness. It is a traditional “six-pointer” in pretty much every sense and Newcastle simply have to come out on top in that one!

Howay the lads!

Lets not mention that word tonight Kim. With all this talk of Remy signing I’ve hopped off the reality train and started dreaming again. πŸ˜† it was getting far to crowded on there anyway I think Dave might need even more carriages.

  3. I see they have Alderweireld all but signed on Ed’s blog. πŸ™„

Don’t get me wrong I would love to see him at Newcastle but they don’t half get sucked in by the itk’s on that blog πŸ˜†

  4. Oblong – I hadn’t boarded the reality train but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to being stood on the platform considering buying a ticket like.
I said the other day and I’m sticking to it, the board have til the end of this window to prove to me that they give a shit and want to not only save us but move us on as well. Debuchy was a good start and Remy would be a great follow up, but they can’t stop there – they must dig that bit deeper again get 1 or 2 CBs depending on the Colo situation.
Thinking about it, if they can convince Colo to stay to the end of the season then that would be as good as a new signing I think. I say that coz I think we need him to get out of this, we need someone who knows the club and knows what’s going on. 2 new CBs at this stage of the season may take too long to settle and gel with the rest of the defence/team.

  5. Imo, there maybe a reason as to why we have moved for remy so suddenly, we didn’t seem in a rush about it when qpr were in for him.

Perhaps the board have approached redknapp to replace pardew, and that was a codition of his. He was after him when he was at spurs too.
Seems strange we didn’t make a move last week.

  6. If we get Remy that would be a great piece of business but a CB is absolutely essential. Why this unwillingness from the club to go after good central defenders? It is a real weakness which hasn’t been dealt with for years now.

  7. Floydy @81 ,Bloody hell ,there’s a thought 😯 That would be a right turn up, but it won’t happen cause-A ,he likes to be southern based and -B, he won’t get the cash to spend that he always seems to want.

  8. I think Collo will stay until the summer to be honest. Your right though we are in a relegation fight if we like it or not and we need Collo to help us get out of it.

I do think we will bring in a CB during this window but I think it will be as back up/competition for Taylor (Williamson upgrade) and not as a replacement for Collo just yet.

Any idea who it might be?

  9. G2 ,it really is wierd isn’t it ., It’s like a mental block with them ,they just don’t seem to think it’s priority at all .They must have a ton of faith in Willo and the fitness of Saylor πŸ™„ 😳

  10. Oblong ,I do think it may be Tomkins but would hope someone with more pace if colo goes as Tomkins is no Colo.

  11. Also ,defo don’t think we should pay the Β£10m price they have apparently put on his head ,that’s got to be a joke. πŸ˜‰

  12. Our current position is probably making Ashley very nervous Floydy. As Kimtoon says Harry won’t come to us. He already turned us down once and he likes to spend a lot. We probably had to commit for Remy because of other club’s interest and our poor scoring record. Let’s hope it comes through but that it’s only a start.

      (Quote)

  13. @Kimtoon it would be an amazing signing but I’m not holding my breath….. Tomkins or similar might be closer to the truth.

      (Quote)

  14. Aye Kimtoon it’s totally bizarre. Anyone can see Saylor is always going to have fitness problems the way he plays. He hasn’t had a complete season yet for us I don’t think. And Colo is getting older and clearly will want to be away soon. Surely we need someone about 25 or 26 to come in and lead the defence. There are CB’s out there as we all know.

      (Quote)

  15. I don’t see Tomkins as a leader at the back. And I don’t see paying anything like 10M pounds for him. That’s madness and we won’t do it. At most he should be 4M or we look elsewhere. Even 4M is a risk but at least he has Prem experience.

      (Quote)

  16. Well I for one will be pleased if Remy does sign I know he hasn’t been the best this season but maybe the change will do him good, but the most important for me is the CB’s as Remy is just replacing Ba, Debuchy is replacing Simmo so for me thats 2 1st team players replacing 2.
Sharpy don’t leave it too late as we are booking up quickly πŸ˜€ πŸ˜‰

  17. Dave ,I’m alright I’ve got my frequent traveler ticket, complete with misery guts discount . If our fellow bloggers can produce a glass half empty perhaps you can give them half price tickets . πŸ˜‰

      (Quote)

  18. Did some people not say on here that Debuchy can’t defend like Simpson and will just be good at going forward. Oh dear that was a load of poo poo wasn’t it. 😳 πŸ™‚

      (Quote)

  19. Remy will be a good boost for the Reading game – centre back next!

I notice they’re rioting Big Dave round you again? What you been doing to kick this off?

      (Quote)

  20. @ DJG

I bet Debuchy can’t run backwards as quickly as Simpson. I’ve never known a defender back off as quick as old Simmo. In fact he is the only person I know that runs quicker backwards than he does forwards πŸ˜†

  21. If Remy does come in I could see us using the 4-3-3 formation to much greater effect. I would try:
    Krul
    Debuchy Saylor Colo Santon
    Marveaux Cabaye Anita
    Ben Arfa Cisse Remy
Not a bad starting 11 and formation. We ideally could use a bigger stronger CMF but that would require a change to 4-1-2-3 or 4-3-1-2 home and away. Surely that 11 can score goals and keep a few out as well. Santon would have to sit back and defend more. Lots of creativity in attack though. Would love to see it.

  22. Stu it’s been fuking crazy here atm, you do know what its over don’t you ❓

On Simmo I like the lad and I know he’s not the best in the Prem and is a decent RB but it’s not his fault that we have only just got someone of equal or better ability, add to that that he rarely gets injuried, so I for one would like to see him stay as back up but I think thats very unlikely

      (Quote)

  23. Kim – I totally agree with you, I think Tomkins will be Williamson replacement. I think a Β£4m bid should get him and if not bollocks it. I’d go for Grant Hanley or Scott Dann instead. If I was a gambling man tho I think Tomkin will be a toon player before long. He’s only 23 so he’s a good age and I think (like Remy) he’s better than what we’ve see of late, and I do think if played regularly he’ll be heaps better than Williamson and less injury prone than Saylor.
I hope Colo agrees to stay and see us clear of danger, I think he owes us at least that as captain. I’d be trying hard for someone like Sakho after that, young promising player who we can guarantee first team football that will see them gain international recognition and build a Β£15-20m buy out clause into his contact so if a bigger club wants he we aren’t stopping him from moving on but we would be covered.

Dave – I’d say save me a seat but I reckon by the time I’d be ready to board it wil be standing room only, or a seat on the roof like the trains out in India πŸ˜†

  24. good, hopefully the agonising wait us fans normally suffer with Ashley and Co will persuade S Lorenzo to look elsewhere…

“Meanwhile, Argentinian club San Lorenzo admit they are growing impatient in their efforts to sign wantaway Toon captain Fabricio Coloccini.

The Argentina international, 30, wants to return to South America for personal reasons, but San Lorenzo president Matias Lammens said: β€˜Time is running out for the signing.

β€˜When you go for a class A defender, the timings are a bit different, but if in the next week we don’t have a response then we will have to go for another option.’

  25. Aye Dave I kna. Personally think its a joke that the union flag isn’t flying – after all it is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland!

      (Quote)

  26. Kim because the nationalist dominated Belfast city council don’t want to have anything to do with the British in Belfast or Northern Ireland, so they decided it was time for it to go. but they like the British pound and have nowt against that

      (Quote)

  27. Ah right I see Dave . What do you think will happen next ,do you think it will get resolved ?. Must be awful seeing that rioting again ,scary stuff.

      (Quote)

  28. Kim I don’t know how it will be resolved as I can’t see the nationalist backing down and the government wont let them down as they need them onside, it’s a total fuking joke the British Government, they tell us that we have to set down and share with republican sinn fein even though they have the blood of thousands of british citizen on there hands. I can honestly see the bullets being brought out again πŸ‘Ώ
    Reet im away this time,
