To put things in perspective the average turnover for a supermarket is £150mpa twice what we do. We don’t turnover what a big sports direct store does.

  2. Any other players from the Netherlands you would like to see come to us Axel? I know you’ve probably said before but just want a clear picture of what’s out there right now. I think we’ve done France to death. What happened to the story we were going to increase scouting in South America as well? Other clubs have done well over there. Or Mexico which is also a very good market. I just don’t hear any names coming out when we really need someone now.

  3. Yeah I hate those imports like Cisse who takes ages to adjust and take a season to bed in 😯

And lampard in on 200k? Seriously Craig 😯

  4. I think part of the turnover problem is our owner continues to think too small Premandup. We were onto something last season with a fifth place finish, but we’ve let it all slip away again. How can new supporters get excited about a club that goes from 5th to 16th in one season? It’s asking a lot. Man U fans get upset if they slip 1 place. Liverpool fans aren’t happy with mid table. Are we supposed to be content with 16th? I’m really directing this question to Ashley.

      (Quote)

  5. GeordieTwo whilst I agree in principle a quick look at the swiss ramble site shows that MU have financial muscle only matched by Chelsea and City. Whereas Liverpool are between Arsenal & Spurs. So for MU to come 4th is failure. For Liverpool to come 7th is failure.

We are in a position where our underlying finances are close to a lot of clubs, Villa Fulham etc. So whilst achieving 5th is a massive achievement dropping to 12th is not such a major **** up.

  6. In terms of us being a “joke” of a club I think that has been a label placed on us for a long time. I can remember The Guardian and other papers referring to us as Jongleurs and taking the **** long before Ashley- around the time of Bramble, Boumsong and Souness. Let’s not forget that FFS made us a laughing stock countless times too.

Ashley has just made it worse (Joe Kinnear being the worst example).

Any club that hasn’t won a trophy for over 58 years is a joke regardless of who’s in charge.

Until we show some ambition and win something we will be a joke of a club to a lot of people.

      (Quote)

  7. But do you think we’ll actually finish 12th Premandup? I have serious doubts. We’re digging ourselves a pretty big hole right now. We’re 5 points out of 12th. That doesn’t seem a lot but on average we get 1 win and 1 draw per month this season. To make up 5 points on teams that are already playing better than us will be a real challenge. I think we are more likely to finish 14th or lower. Is 14th place acceptable for the club with the third biggest ground in the country? For that matter is 12th? Surely we have to be competing for a top 10 finish every season as our own management have said many times to even begin to think we are successful? And surely we have to start winning the odd cup game especially against lower division opponents? Again, I’m having a go at Ashley, not you Premandup as I think the article is excellent.

  8. GEORDIETWO the players i would go for in our current situation would be .
Bruno Martins Indie a central defender from Feyenoord but currently being used as LB is young 19 i think but already has caps for Holland .
Finbogasson a goal machine playing for Heerenveen is 21 and a finnish international .Has imo the strength ,pace and skill to do a job in the premiership more a Carroll type than a Ba type
Maher again young but very skillful midfielder in the Cabaye mould playing for AZ Alkmaar .

The attendances will drop off again if they don’t invest this window.

Lets not forget, we got as low as 39k at times a few seasons back.

  10. I think Dougal is just playing it safe.
Doesn’t fancy getting relegated with us, but neither does he back his own abilities to keep us up.
His loss I say and our gain. I never rated him anyway.
    As for Lampard…. 😆 😆 😆
would just be another Owen imo. Dont even go there.
I would however be prepared to push the boat out for Lescott of citeh.
on loan for the rest of the season with an option to purchase if we survive the drop.
This lad has experience of PL knows how to battle for points and is, imo a very good CB.

  11. We’re always looking for another player to solve our problems. Other clubs with far less financial clout seem to do okay. I call the likes of perch and willo but they’ll go to smaller clubs eventually and come back and beat us. I think the likes of the Caldwell brothers, and Aaron Hughes, even Titus could have done us a decent job over the last two or three years, but they went the big money signings that we seem to crave and demand. It’s the long term stability that this sort of player can offer that we don’t value.

      (Quote)

  12. Thanks for that Axel. I’m having a look. Agree with Troy, the attendance will start to drop. Disappointment in the club is through the roof again as it should be. When are we going to learn? Why didn’t we spend in the summer? Because Ash/Llam were over-confident fools. Pardew isn’t much better but we’re stuck with all of them for the time being. I fear the rest of this window is going to be as painful to watch as most of our games this season. How pathetic. The manager can’t find a way to allow 2 excellent goal scorers to play at the same club? The owner doesn’t know when to spend? What is this a football club or a comedy routine?

      (Quote)

  13. Troy I agree with that, but also the season ticket renewals will plummet come march.
I have already admitted I am seriously thinking twice about mine.
I have heard similar rumblings from others in the Gallowgate end too.
There will be plenty cash turnstiles on the go, so I might just take a chance. 😯 🙁

  14. Interesting read Prem I wonder if we could maybe make more money if we let other companies adbertise around the ground instead of having the place covered from top to bottom with tacky sports direct signs covering every available space, as im sure there is money to be made that way, considering all other teams do it.
As im sure there would be big companies crying out for that type of exposure, as i’m sure they would know that S D have done well out of it ?
Cause lets face it we would make more money out of that than hawking around twitter and facebook looking someone to sponsorthe matchday ball and changing rooms. So if Jabba wants to keep all the prime advertising spots for him and SD well then we will never make money and he’s the one to blame

  15. Just read that apparantly Remy missed his toon meeting coz he wanted a lie in instead – so pleased we didn’t get that dingbat like!

Shamrock – I’ve been suggesting Puncheon for weeks now mate. He’s out of contract at the end of the season so we could probs get him for about £2m, well worth that money IMO.

Prem – it’s a very good article mate and well researched, but I’m afraid I disagree with the lot!. Not your points, but the clubs whole ‘purple’ players plan. It’s a stupid plan and a bit pretentious IMO. Personally, I couldn’t give a ***** how many international players we have in our squad, and what if they aren’t selected for internationals?!, do they then stop being ‘purple’.
I’m not sure where Everton sit in the revenue to wages table but I’d far sooner see us follow their model. Everton don’t seem to sign ‘names’ or players based on international experience, they simply buy players who are better than the ones they already have. Think about it, how much competition did they face when they signed Lescott, Phil Jag, Distin, Baines, Pinear, Fellani or Jelly man – certainly none from us that I remember, yet anyone of them could likely walk into our first team (I know Lescott isn’t there anymore by the way). The point I’m trying to make is that some fans turn there noses up at some players we are linked with. I read some people saying that Danny Graham isn’t good enough to be a toon player – well why not if he scores goals?!.
I wonder how many toon fans would have said “Michu for £2m – what kinda of ambition is that?!, never even heard of him!!”
I’m sure most of us would love to go back to the KK days of signing marquee players but ultimately it does guarantee success and generally skints ya. Yet teams like Everton and Stoke have grafters bought for less and probably paid less too. I’d happily see players like Puncheon or Matt Phillips or Danny Graham or Gary Hooper coming to the toon, rather than constantly looking abroad. I reckon we could get 3 of those 4 players for the £9m suggested for De Jong. There’s 3 players that would improve our squad considerably as opposed to 1 ‘purple’ player.

      (Quote)

  16. Spot on Big Dave @90. Another reason to hate this owner as if we needed one. The man just has no concern at all for the club in the way we do. He has no football nous whatsoever. He will continure to have us sitting around 15th place all season then laugh all the way to the bank as he collects the new TV money. The pauper billionaire strikes again.

      (Quote)

  17. I’m hearing Norwich have bid £5M for Graham
    We couldn’t afford that much.
He would be a good squad player for us, imo

      (Quote)

  18. 91, I certainly think we would do well signing a few of the lads you have listed. I still think we need to look abroad at the same time though. We just dont produce technical players in Britain. The work ethic of those players you listed will carry us a long way, but if we stuck solely to that type – we would consistently finish mid table like Stoke. You need the foreign flair to push on, however too many of them and they seem to lack the fight for a relegation battle like the locals do. It’s just about finding that happy medium…

Everton are a good example, but Pienaar, Arteta, Jellyman, fellaini were all foreign buys. They just found that happy medium.

      (Quote)

  19. Well thought out comment Sharpy @91. We do need to bring in some hard working lesser known players. This whole idea that every player must be a star from another club isn’t going to work. We won’t pay the wages anyway. We do need to step out for a CB however. I favour Lescott on loan as well. He is very solid and much less of a risk than a player from another league. Surely we have to act soon as we are so slow with our incoming. The Reading game could be a real shocker for the owner if we were to lose it. His apparent determination not to do anything might disappear quickly.

      (Quote)

  20. And we probably couldn’t afford Graham’s wage either BB @94. Do you think he would mind playing for us for free for a few seasons? Derek seems to think it’s not too much to ask to get to play for your home club. Personally I think all our players should have to strap a Sports Direct hoarding to their backs while they play. It’s not too much to ask for our beloved owner is it?

      (Quote)

  21. BB@93 looks o.k but another african ,don’t wanna be losing half the team every time the ACON is on 🙄

Here’s another -Lazar Markovic 18yr old at Partizan Belgrade ,plays as 2nd striker. Read on a rumour site we are in for him ,very quick apparently ,12 goals in 41 games 🙄

      (Quote)

  22. Shamrock – I’m not saying only English players or only grafters for the team, I agree we need players like Benny and Cabaye as well. What I mean is – take Axels post for example, how many of the players he’s mentioned have you heard of?, I know I’ve heard of none!. I hadn’t heard of Michu before this season either. But some fans see ambitions as how much we spend on players.
“This board lacks ambitions coz it would never spend £20-30m in a transfer window”. But for me, ambition is improving your squad regardless of how much you spend. Personally, I’d happily be a mid table Stoke for a couple of seasons, as Everton and Spurs did. Get a stability to build upon so prospective signings know what they are coming to, coz at the moment if I was approached by NUFC I’m not sure I’d bloody sign!.

      (Quote)

  23. “It was a little strange as we had obviously put a lot of work in and made the club an offer that was accepted, a good offer.” “We made a fantastic offer to the player and then he didn’t arrive. This club is on a financial footing that is strong, but we’re still not going to pay silly money.”
Quote from Pardew. Thanks for clearing that up Alan. So the offer was so fantastic that he signed for QPR instead. What do we actually think our wage offer was? I’m saying 40K per week based on statements they offered him about twice as much as us. Is 40K a week realistic for a player of his quality in the january window? I doubt it very much. If we aren’t going to pay competitive wages then let’s get on with signing a few less well known players who are still skilled. Isn’t that what Carr is supposed to be so brilliant at? If so why go after Remy in the first place? Go for one of these hidden gems we’re always talking about. Or is it possible that we haven’t got a clue who to try for now?

      (Quote)

  24. How strong will our financial footing be if we go down? Will Pardew still be around bragging about how clever we are? I doubt it. Will Llambias still be around to destroy our hopes for the club? If Ashley is still the owner I think we can count on it.

      (Quote)

  25. To be fair, GeordieTwo, I didn’t see many other clubs rushing in with £80k per week. Given that he supposedly agreed a deal in principle with us too, whatever we offered would clearly have been enough if QPR hadn’t gone mental.

I’ll blame the Regime for a lot, but I’m on their side with Remy.

      (Quote)

  26. I think everyone who says QPR overpaid for Remy is correct. BLIP @101 you’re right mate but what I’m try to say is why bother going in for such expensive players? We have seen Harry do this before and several other clubs as well. We may as well go for targets we can actually bring in. All the fuss and bother about Remy and where are we? No further ahead and less time to bring someone else in. I think this may be the last time we bid on such a well known player. Surely we’ve learned our lesson. But still I ask where are those hidden gems we need now? What striker is really on our list next and why haven’t we bid for him yet? If we make no further serious bids for a forward I will be shocked and horrified for our chances in the league.

      (Quote)

  27. Yeah can’t blame the club for the Remy ordeal. Fair’s fair. That said, I’d like to know what a ‘fantastic offer’ actually means. Heard it used a lot by Pards when deals have gone sour. Sharp agree mate. As long as they have a good work ethic and technical ability I dont give a **** who they are, how much they cost or how old they are for that matter. As long as they improve our squad for the right reasons – i.e swerve the mercenaries.

      (Quote)

  28. GEORDIETWO @ 100 I would say if they offered him £40k a week thats maybe why he wanted a lie in, if that is the type of money we are offering then I think we are destined to be bottom half strugglers, as there is noway we’ll be consistent top 8 as Lambastad says if that the type of money on offer.

  31. I agree Big Dave but it’s water under the bridge now. What is our plan to make sure we stay up? I think that’s the main thing most of us want to know. I love source craic. 😛

I’m gonna get pilloried for it but I’ve been reliably informed cisse got injured in training this morning and won’t play against reading. We’ve supposedly signed a player and there will be a press conference monday to announce it 😯

Take it as you like. But I’m gonna take my neck off the line and say, I don’t believe sources anymore!! 🙄

I’m only the messenger from a person who knows Beardo and he stated this today.

      (Quote)

  34. Am I really reading folk suggesting £40k is a **** offer for a player who is out of form, only played about twice for OM this season and was hardly in great demand?!. If he had proved to be the player he has the ability to be then we could have increased his wage as we had with Tiote.
Harry was twisting about Boswingas commitment based on his salary, he may have a similar twist about Mr Remy and the salary he’s got him on if he couldn’t be arsed to even meet Arry last week or get out of bed to meet our reps.
But let’s be right £40k is a bloody good starting salary, particularly if they added bonuses to that. It also gives them room to negotiate improved contracts should the player either deserve it or have his head turned.

      (Quote)

  35. Read the link Kimtoon. Yes that average wage at over 22K a week is very high but there is so much money pouring into the Prem now I’m not really surprised. Once that big TV money comes in next season it will be an even bigger problem especially for clubs like us. We have a tremendous ground, fantastic supporters but a clueless owner/MD who won’t really allow us to thrive. It’s not the fact that he wants to keep spending under control, that’s a good idea in the long run. It’s the fact he and Llambias are clueless about football. Look at some of their signings. Kinnear for God’s sake! I’m surprised we didn’t end up with Souness again. We show no consistency in the transfer market either. All over the place. Really only a few excellent signings in 5 years and Ba is already gone! Tiote has been poor this season as well. Is that why Twente let him go so cheaply? Hindsight is 20/20 but surely any club that hires Joe Kinnear has a problem at the top.

      (Quote)

  36. Sharpy I am not saying I wanted Remy or not but only a year ago he was a £20+ mil player that was talked of as being the new Henry ok he has went through a bad season but do you really think £40 k is going to get you top quality players ?

That’s all Beardo has allegedly said.

I’ll be more hopeful about the signing if Cisse is announced injured tomorrow or Saturday.

    I’m as sceptical as you.

      (Quote)

  44. isnt that why we go to France etc. I thought this was obvious.

Tiote, Cabaye and even Barfa would of been on the 20-25k mark if that.. so to come here for 28-35mil is a great career move for them.

But we all know if a top 16 team 😛 comes knocking, there’s a massive chance we’ll sell and the player will leave for more money.

    This is how we operate.

  45. Troy @ 119 I agree 100% but I don’t think Remy is a potential top player I think he already is a top player. As I said I am not saying Remy was the answer but I do think there was a good chance that a change of scenery might have been what Remy needed, in the way that Benny needed the same.

    @ Dave

Im sure Remy will be similar to Ba & Cisse.

I’m sure they only came to us with a similar offer.

It’s keeping hold of them when they demand more is the problem with us.

      (Quote)

  47. Dave – yeah I do actually, to begin with anyway and then if they show their worth it can be improved. As for Remy being worth £20m last season?! – surely he’s only worth what someone will pay for him?. Carroll was £35m and Torres £50m – how much they worth now?
I understand what your saying regarding the top players in the top 4-6 teams mate, but we aren’t one of those teams I’m afraid to say.
Do we know that we offered Remy £40k a week like?

      (Quote)

  48. As for the staying to have a lie in where did this story originate from ? From what I can gather was that Pards and Lambastad met Remy in London on sunday then arranged for him to come down to the Toon on tues only by that time Sloppy chops had got in on the act, so why didn’t they get him down 1st thing monday morning and get it sewn up instead of dilly dallying as fuking usual

      (Quote)

  49. Cheers Prem.

That would suggest to me that maybe we should be looking at the type of players they are signing and doing things, rather than the likes of Lpool and Spurs. I’d be interested to know who was paid what in there team and how many players are paid between £40-80k

      (Quote)

  50. Sharpy @ 126 well 90% of the reports were that he got double the money from QPR and he is getting £80ish k so that would suggest he was offered roughly £40k ❓ As for Carroll I don’t think you can compare him with Remy Carroll had a season in the CCC and half a season in the Prem, but Loic Remy has been doing it for a few seasons

      (Quote)

  51. Dave, it was interesting to read Benny’s interview. He made the same point – said we should have got the deal done sooner. It’s probably because our negotiating team are smart arses who thought they could try and squeeze a few more penny’s out of the deal… 🙄

      (Quote)

  52. If Remy is a genuine £80k per week standard player, he would have had loads of top teams sniffing around him at the price he was sold for.

      (Quote)

  53. Sham IMO if they had of showed a bit of urgency they could have had it sowed up, especially considering we are in a bit of a hurry to get the players in, or does the Regime not think we are in desperate need with time running out 😯

      (Quote)

  54. Dave I know, as a top PL striker we should have paid Ba the going rate long before Chelski came sniffing around.

      (Quote)

  55. Maybe what we should have done is cut Remys phone lines and kept him under lock and key with a guard on the door til the ****** signed a contract 💡 😆 The shitbag stayed in bed instead of turning up for our meeting. He also declined a meeting with the bloke he has just signed for – for double the money!!.
This wasn’t us not moving fast enough, this was Remy showing his colours. If Cabs and Deb are tweeting saying he’s going to be good for the club that would have suggested either Pards or Remy himself had spoken with them.

Troy – not to buy into the rumours, but I’m sure someone posted earlier that Sissoko was deciding on us or the Scum today – it’s a possibility.

      (Quote)

  56. Dave @134, no I think the board feel they are supreme beings who hold all the strings when it comes to negotiating transfers. No rush at all with them.

  57. I think we tried to sign Remy as much to get Cisse going as for his goals. To be honest I would have preferred to pay Ba a wage he was worth and let Cisse go in the summer. Ba has 3 goals in 3 games now for Chelsea. He will score a bunch for them this season. Still not sure Cisse will for us. Are we sure we’re on the right track Ashley? It certainly doesn’t look like it. Unless your standard of success for the season is 16th place, a -12 goal difference, lack of scoring, and lack of defence.

They should have been made to compete for the same spot, and still we should have bought in a third striker. I would prefer to let Shola go than Cisse.
How we could just let Ba leave so easily simply beggars belief. We should have paid him proper cash and been done with it. For that we would have a top class striker tied up for the next 5 years. A real bargain in my eyes. That would have freed up precious time to bring in a top CB when everyone else was still looking for a striker.
    Now look where we are.

Why would any player come to us for far less money? Or why should any player stay with us for far less money? If I ran a garage and said to you I’ll pay you 30K a year and you should accept it because you grew up around here and another bloke offered you 50K a week to work elsewhere what would you say?

  64. We have Shola who is past it and Xisco and Ranger who never made it in the first place as backup strikers now. Wow that really fills me with confidence. I am so impressed with our ability to bring in promising young strikers. About the same amount of ability we’ve shown in bringing in CB’s. But of course we’ve spent 5 years bringing in about 20 amazing midfielders so we should be fine. Let’s see now: Vuckic, injured (as usual), Gosling, injured (as usual), Amalfitano, looks very average, Abeid, hopeless, Inman, who knows we never saw him play. I realize we have a few decent midfielders but what on earth were they thinking?
