San Lorenzo end pursuit of Coloccini, for now…

Colo stays put for now
Colo stays put for now
After a fortnight of uncertainty one of the most bizarre transfer stories of the January transfer has finally been put to bed.

Fabricio Coloccini will remain at Newcastle United as San Lorenzo have finally admitted defeat in their pursuit of the Argentinian defender.

Now I don’t know if that is it full stop or if that is it until the summer, but at least it allows everyone to move on and concentrate on the job in hand which is Premier League survival. The very last thing we needed was our Captain buggering off in our time of need and it seems that we’ve managed to avoid that particular situation although with San Lorenzo unable to offer any kind of fee and with Coloccini locked into a long-term deal it was, perhaps, the most logical outcome.

In a brief statement on the San Lorenzo website they said the following:

“Finally, after long negotiations, we announce that Fabricio Coloccini will not join the squad of San Lorenzo. It was not possible to release the Newcastle player and therefore the club will look for another alternative.”

It wasn’t possible to release the player as football just doesn’t work like that. Not many players just get released from a deal, especially not players of the importance of Fabricio Coloccini no matter how much his Dad doth protest about it. I’m actually glad we’ve stood our ground on this one.

Tim Vickery, a BBC correspondent for South American football, said earlier in the week that he believed the whole situation to be a publicity stunt following recent Presidential elections at the club. I don’t think he is to far wide of the mark. At least I hope not anyway…

So it’s done and over with for now. The one thing we have to watch for however is the mindset of our Captain. He needs to lead now more than ever and if his head and heart really isn’t in Newcastle then his place in the side must come under scrutiny.

Fortunately I, along with many others, have been watching him in the games against Norwich and Reading and I couldn’t see any adverse reaction and was happy enough with his performances. That was when there was the possibility of an escape route however.

It strengthens our defence knowing we have Colo for the rest of the season, and with Steven Taylor on the verge of a return to the first team and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa we suddenly start to look a lot more solid at the back. I don’t even mind Mike Williamson as fourth-choice cover to be honest.

So, for now anyway, the good news keeps on coming!

  1. Nice one Toonsy 😉 . You can’t expect someone of his calibre to be released from a club that’s currently struggling, ludicrous. 😕

  2. You can expect it. If you’re San Lorenzo 😉

I don’t know how much of it was just publicity though? I used to listen to Tim Vickery all the time on World Football Phone In and a lot of these South American clubs’ Presidential candidates claim ludicrous things just to assume power. Maybe the fact his Dad also works there was his way of getting in with the new bosses? I dunno…

  4. Toonsy ,quick off the mark ,might of been a better turn of phrase there 😆 😉

Good news on Colo and agree that whilst his form has been a bit iffy this season it’s not helped with Wilo alongside and Santoon going walkies . Truth be told he must be relishing being next to Mbiwa ,if that’s not an incentive to stay ,I don’t know what is. I can’t say he’s not been putting the effort in cause he has. Just angry that he brought this **** on the club at this time that’s all.

Good, and good riddance to them. Bloody pointless exercise 😕

Colo did look alright in those two matches-assuming he helps bed in the new lads (sounds like he’s had enough practice recently) then we should be set for some decent performances and more importantly, results…

  6. UTD111 – I think we’ll now find out how “deep” his problems and how much desire he had to leave, if at all. Does he request some time away which would suggest something still isn’t right? Does he not do anything and keeps on playing which suggests maybe things have been blown out of proportion perhaps?

  7. If we had just let him go even for a knock down fee imagine the precedent that would set! Colo may have personal issues to sort out but now this nonsense is over he needs to settle down and get us out of our mess. I’m sure if his family problems warranted it he would be allowed to go back to Argentine for a few days between games or during international breaks. Hopefully he will continue to be focused on the pitch whatever his problems

  9. Maybe all Argies have homesickness at some point in their lives, remember tevez? 😆 Just let him go golfing for a month and a half in buenos aires in June/July 😀

  10. that means we can sell Mbiwa to arsenal for a tidy profit 😀 🙄
cant wait to see Mbiwa & Colo 2gether with Saylor on the bench.

    Willo,,, see ya later…

If we’d let him go, the footballing world would lose all respect for us, players would be less willing to join and many current players would want out.

  12. We shall see, still not convinced until Newcastle confirm Colo is staying. This could well be SL trying to put further pressure on Colo.
Hopefully Colo stays til the summer though, then if he still wants away we replace him with a younger, pacey CB. Been very disappointed with Colo and this whole situation to be honest. Cabaye or Krul for Captain next season for me I think.

Anyway, I know we look likely to get Gouffran, but I’d like to see another in.
Is there any truth in this Rip Van Winkel story or not, if so how much?
If not, I think Celtic want around £8m for Hooper or Graham for around £5m I’d think.

I’ve thought it was this all along….

I’m not overly concerned with this effecting collo’s play. If anything, he’s played the best he has all season during the last couple of weeks while this story was brewing

Me neither. Other than River Platte and Boca Juniors I don’t think i could name another Argie club.

  15. No truth in the Winklepicker story according to Caulkin and Ryder anyway.

Andy – At €50 a pop Amsterdam is far too expensive. A colleague told me it was €50 for 15 minutes anyway.

    Extortionate Toonsy 😯 😉 , try Thailand then 😐
    MDS
Was Corinthians argentine? Know that Tevez was linked with them. Newell’s young/old(cant remember which) boys is an Argie team that Messi supported (read his bio, was gunna sign for them but they could afford his medical programme).

      (Quote)

  18. Andy – what’s the craic there then, have we been chasing this lad for a while or has his agent just made him available?.
I’d be amazed if Ashley parted with another £10-12m having brought these 3 boys in like.
Heard of Rip but haven’t seen much of him to be honest. Hooper looked mustard last night again, but I’m not sure if we’ve ever been linked with him

Guess that’s why they pulled out, by the time they got him over to sort out a contract and medical it’d probably be too late.

  21. one big conspiracy theory?????

colo was actually never planning on leaving…him along with one or two other names.. HBA for example decided that a panic button needed to be pushed in order to make the fat controller **** his pants and show some well overdue money for top draw players instead of gambles…. who knows but its a nice thought that old poker face has been played a blinder by his own team.. i quite like the idea of that.

      (Quote)

  22. A central defense of Colo and Mbiwa should be the strongest we’ve had by far since Ashley took over. Looking forward to seeing us allow far fewer goals. Krul must be over the moon as well. As for attack, it would be prudent to get another striker now rather than wait for the summer. Even with Ben Arfa back we need a real alternative to Cisse in case he continues to struggle. I think Gouffran will offer a lot on the wing but we need that second central striker.

      (Quote)

  23. Toonsy
Your obviously not as committed as I am then 😆 . Could be that the colo thing is publicity too, don’t know how though.
    Sharpy
Heard something about him wanting too leave, apparently around £11m will get him. I think that’s reasonable for someone of his ability at his age.

      (Quote)

  24. As with others I have been thinking about our next 3 games. If we lose all three, or get just a draw with Villa will Pardew still have support as manager? For me it gets very dicey at that point if Ashley has anyone reasonable at all in mind. Surely he must sometimes think of a French manager? There are a couple available. To have 21 or 22 points after 26 games would be devastating unless we see a dramatic improvement in play for me. And after the 3 games (Villa, Chelsea, Spurs) we have Southampton at home, another crucial game. A draw or loss in that one would leave us in dire straits with only 11 games remaining. I’m a lot more optimistic with these incoming but Pardew has several big tests ahead of him.

  30. Andymag@40 I don’t think so. According to physio room he’s not due back until Feb. 21. Mark @41 Gouffran can play striker but our wing play has been so poor I would think we’ll see him there. Very worried about Cisse’s form as I’m sure Pardew is as well. I’m not sure I see Ashley spending much more than he already has though.

      (Quote)

  31. Andy – wouldn’t disagree with you mate, but I know a fat cockney who might 😉
It would be great to get another striker in though. As much as I like Hooper and Graham, I’m not sure they are in Ba’s league whereas RVW may well be. We shall see, but I have to say that I’m grateful and pleased the board have got these lads in.

As for Colo, see out the season then get someone like Simon Kjaer or Sakho in the summer in to replace Colo, either of those boys alongside MYM would make a hell of a partnership IMO

      (Quote)

  32. I guess I’ve actually turned it into a next 4 game discussion. If we came out of the next 4 games with 1 or 2 points would anyone think Pardew would survive with such an improvement in the side on paper at least? My guess is no he won’t survive. That would probably mean a clearout of several coaches as well but 22 or 23 points after 27 games would be a horrible position to be in. I think Ashley has shown he still has faith in Ashley with the current spending but that faith will need to be repaid sooner rather than later.

      (Quote)

  33. Come on lads, don’t make me beg! 😆 If we took 1 or 2 points from the next 4 games what do you think will happen with Pardew? I’m saying he’ll be out. On the other hand if we took 6-8 points everyone would be happy, we’d be moving up the table and Pardew could draw a huge breath of relief.

      (Quote)

  34. I’m begging you lasses as well Kimtoon. What do you think Pards chances are given the possibilities I mentioned? Come on lass give us your opinion. 😉 And 15 minutes wouldn’t be nearly enough for some of us by the way. 😆

      (Quote)

  35. G2 – 1 or 2 points out of 12 and he’ll be out IMO. We need two quality strikers through the door to stand a decent chance of staying up. If Shola has to play, we’re doomed. If Cisse gets injured, we’re doomed. 😯

      (Quote)

  36. G2 – I’m just wondering what this sudden rush to sign players is. is it because they know Pardew is on his last legs and signing players with no manager wouod be harder?

      (Quote)

  37. Toonsy &G2 ,my thought was the oposite .I thought by signing so many with Pards here it showed they are backing him 😕 A new guy wouldn’t have any choice if he comes in in 4 or 5 games time like. G2 ,I think they are really reluctant to sack him and we’d have to be totally up **** creak for them to do that ,hence the newbies rushed in .

      (Quote)

  38. It’s definitely an open question toonsy and B&B. I think 2 points or less from the next 12 and he’s gone but that would require the owner to think ahead and not bring in some dross like Joe Kinnear. Would any decent manager come to us if we were in that state? Only someone with a huge amount of confidence I would think. I hate to say it but didn’t Curbishley come in and save one of Pardew’s previous teams at the end of a season? I still think there is some chance we might see Curbishley in before the end of this season. 😐

      (Quote)

  39. You could very well be right but where will the supporters be if we take 2 points or less from the next 4 games Kimtoon? Surely the pressure will continue to mount on Pardew from both the owner and the supporters and then anything might happen with Ashley in there.

Honestly I think they are just in panic mode and rightfully so. You are taking a bigger risk with every match you play without stregthening. Might as well get them in now so they can play as many matches as possible.

  41. Make no mistake we still have a battle on our hands but with the arrival of Mbiwa and Gouffran and hopefully Sissoko and also Debuchy already plus the promising haidara the existing players have nowt to drop the lip about anymore. We do still need a forward imo but it’s a good start. The players should take heart from what’s happened over the last 2 days or so and really kick on now ,I will be really disappointed if they don’t .

      (Quote)

  42. The rush is that Pardew, like all **** managers who can’t fix things on the training ground, shout for new players when they hit a slide like this that they can’t halt. We can’t afford to drop out of this league, and the window shuts very soon.

Our defence has been our big problem this season, so I welcome the new signings. However, our top priority, having lost Ba, is two top quality goalscorers. Goals win games, and we need to win games. We got our priorities wrong in the summer, and we’re in danger of doing so again with all this talk of more defenders, midfielders and wingers.

      (Quote)

  43. Toonsy – don’t you think it’s just a realisation that they should have done this in the summer, and better to spend £15-20m now to secure around £90m on EPL survival next season.
Plus there’s also the fact that, he’s likely to make a profit on all the players he’s signed so far as well like.

    Bingo!

  46. Great news Ice!

It’s not that I have a great memeory but you were really talking him up awhile back and looked him up and liked what I read. I’ve followed him a bit since then. Would be an excellant signing IMO

      (Quote)

  47. SHARPY they say that they have signed, press conf t/morrow,also saying MDS now saying medical for him t/morrow,looking good IMO,more so when the lad has said in the past that he wants to go to the toon

      (Quote)

  48. Evil – I’d say two, one if we could be sure that Cisse will get his act together and stay injury free. We couldn’t be. Benny’s not going to get the number of goals we need.

I’m surprised there’s not more concern that we haven’t even got one replacement for Ba through the door yet. The quality we need means a massive outlay. I don’t know whether we’ve been so happy with what we’ve got so far that we might have lost sight of it. I know there’s talk of Gouffran but I’m not sure he can do that job.
