San Lorenzo end pursuit of Coloccini, for now…

Colo stays put for now
Colo stays put for now
After a fortnight of uncertainty one of the most bizarre transfer stories of the January transfer has finally been put to bed.

Fabricio Coloccini will remain at Newcastle United as San Lorenzo have finally admitted defeat in their pursuit of the Argentinian defender.

Now I don’t know if that is it full stop or if that is it until the summer, but at least it allows everyone to move on and concentrate on the job in hand which is Premier League survival. The very last thing we needed was our Captain buggering off in our time of need and it seems that we’ve managed to avoid that particular situation although with San Lorenzo unable to offer any kind of fee and with Coloccini locked into a long-term deal it was, perhaps, the most logical outcome.

In a brief statement on the San Lorenzo website they said the following:

“Finally, after long negotiations, we announce that Fabricio Coloccini will not join the squad of San Lorenzo. It was not possible to release the Newcastle player and therefore the club will look for another alternative.”

It wasn’t possible to release the player as football just doesn’t work like that. Not many players just get released from a deal, especially not players of the importance of Fabricio Coloccini no matter how much his Dad doth protest about it. I’m actually glad we’ve stood our ground on this one.

Tim Vickery, a BBC correspondent for South American football, said earlier in the week that he believed the whole situation to be a publicity stunt following recent Presidential elections at the club. I don’t think he is to far wide of the mark. At least I hope not anyway…

So it’s done and over with for now. The one thing we have to watch for however is the mindset of our Captain. He needs to lead now more than ever and if his head and heart really isn’t in Newcastle then his place in the side must come under scrutiny.

Fortunately I, along with many others, have been watching him in the games against Norwich and Reading and I couldn’t see any adverse reaction and was happy enough with his performances. That was when there was the possibility of an escape route however.

It strengthens our defence knowing we have Colo for the rest of the season, and with Steven Taylor on the verge of a return to the first team and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa we suddenly start to look a lot more solid at the back. I don’t even mind Mike Williamson as fourth-choice cover to be honest.

So, for now anyway, the good news keeps on coming!

  1. Our MDS?! – I’m not sure about that mate 😕

I’ve just been reading what Rip Van Winkles agent has been saying and it sounds like he’s busy either manufacturing a move for his player or a better contract out of Lisbon – either way, I’m sure he’ll get a slice. Can’t believe Lisbon only paid £5.5m for him – don’t see them letting him go if him honest.
Wouldn’t mind the lad Axel has mentioned before Finnbogason I think. Looks a little goal machine and could probably get him for around £5m.

  2. Team Manager Ranking Comment
Man U. A. Ferguson 1 has won everything
Everton D. Moyes 2 fantastic, top 4 manager
Man City R. Mancini 3 decent job, won title
Arsenal A. Wenger 4 based on the past mainly
    Swansea M. Laudrup 5 upcoming
Wigan R. Martinez 6 very good
Tottenham A. Vilas-Boas 7 not sure about this one
    Liverpool B. Rodgers 8 solid, mid-table manager
    Sunderland M. O’Neill 9 solid, mid-table manager
    Stoke T. Pulis 10 solid, mid-table manager
    West Ham S. Allardyce 11 a mid-table manager
Fulham M. Jol 12 looks a bit stale now
West Brom S. Clarke 13 needs more experience
Chelsea R. Benitez 14 adequate, no more
Newcastle A. Pardew 15 adequate, no more
Norwich C. Hughton 16 might be out of his depth in Prem
Aston Villa P. Lambert 17 difficult team to sort out now
Reading B. McDermott 18 might be out of his depth in Prem
QPR H. Rednapp 19 poor with the money he spends
    So’ampton M. Pochettino 20? unknown quatity
Here’s a quick attempt to rank the Prem managers based on how well they do with the money they have. Notice where Pardew ranks. Very dicey position for the long term (8 years?) in my opinion.

  3. B&B – We don’t know if Gouffran will hit the ground running or not, but he will need a chance to bed in a bit which would be required of any striker we brought in.

I’m still not quite sure why there is still so much concern for Cisse and his form. He has scored goals this season despite being played well out of position.

He scored against Everton and was unlucky not to put another one away.

Norwich he had zero service but worked hard for the cause.

Just horrendous luck against Reading, the point is his positioning was excellent and he was in those places he needs to be to score. A Cisse that hadn’t been pushed out wide and forgotten about all season may have put one of them away.

I’m not in the least bit concerned.

If he gets a long term injury we are fooked 😆

If we only played three in defence we could field a 10/11 French team. Mind you from one article I read says that there’s some good up and coming keepers in France.

  5. Why so Wellington? I just did it for a bit of fun. My main point is that I don’t think Pardew is a suitable long-term manager for the club. We should be able to do much better. Being a pal of the owner shouldn’t be a criterion for the job any more than it should be for the managing director. I’m a lot happier with the owner now than I was last week but I still think we need a huge improvement in our management team to really be a consistent top 6 contender. Anyway Ashley is only putting money into the team now because he badly wants that TV money not because of the fans or real love and passion for the club.

  6. Andy your 3 at the back formation looks really good.

If we had it at the start of the season who knows where we’d be now!

  10. Evil – I agree with your summing up of Cisse. I thought he was unlucky against Reading. However, even if he’s out for six weeks with a hamstring for example, we’ve got nobody to turn to. Besides, he needs a good striker to play alongside anyway, but I don’t think Pardew sees it that way.

      (Quote)

  11. G2/Ice – if Sissoko had a medical tomorrow and subsequently signed this week, I think we’d have to go pretty far back to find a more successful transfer week in NUFC history like.
Still need a striker though 😛

  12. Moreno- no need. I’m conviced he has a second family over there consdering how much time he spends scouting the French league… 😉

Earlier today, B&B spoke in the diary room.

“I REFUSE TO SPEAK TO HIM EVER AGAIN COS HE IS BOORISH. HE MISREPRENTED ME TO OUR OTHER BROTHER”.

Big Brother; DO YOU CONSIDER THIS A CHILDISH HISSY FIT.

  14. Few random thoughts

    Strikers.
Still think they will go for Carroll in the Summer as a long term replacement as Shola
so Cisse, Gouffran, Carroll + 1 Who RVW, Danny Graham ?? and when this window or summer?

    Manager
Still think Pardew could be a good long term manager here. However perhaps we are going foreign and looking to bring in a Frenchman eg L. Blanc or somebody I don’t know. However please can I have Marcelo Bielsa please, pretty please.

I think I’m liking the look of this new reality.

      (Quote)

  15. I would say so as well Sharpy. It would be an incredible window for us. Now can Pardew make the best of it and get us up the table? I’ll give him credit if he does. Was never his greatest fan but if he gets us to 12th or so I’ll take my hat off to him. If Cisse were to get injured B&B I think we would have to hope Gouffran could slot in there. Certainly a better bet than Shola.

      (Quote)

  16. Sharpy – I don’t know the continental scene like many on here. I can’t particularly remember Gouffran, but I’m always suspicious of someone billed as a goalscorer who can also play on the wing. I know less about Rip van Winkle.

Will you think its a good window if we get Sissoko, another quality defender, but no striker? Do you think one striker will be enough?

I’m pleased Ashley held his nerve over Pardew.

There’s been a lot of knee jerkers on here lately. 😛

Nerves of steel is required and some simply don’t have it. 😉

      (Quote)

  18. It’s a good comment Troy @98 but what would you do if we take 2 or less points from the next 4 games? Just interested to know your opinion. Would you still be committed to Pardew? I’ve said he would have to go but now we have the players in he should be able to improve us if he is a decent manager.

      (Quote)

  19. Troy,

Knee ****? I wouldn’t say watching absolute dross for almost 20 games in a season knee **** but each to their own. Tip of the iceberg, straw that broke the camels back etc etc for me.

At the end of the day though he has either shown faith in Pardew or thought about a potential payout, no time to get a new manager in, current negotiations with good deals failing because of upheavel. Could be many reasons but yeah ‘holding his nerve’ would also be one you could throw in.

      (Quote)

  20. And 4 new signings would give any team fresh impetus and gear them up. Some will be buoyed by the new blood and ‘ambition’ to stay up and some will fear for their places so it should improve the teams performance.

I won’t be hopping up and down about Pardew even if we go on to win the next couple of games as I won’t put it down to his tactics. At the end of the day he had a large group of players who have been with him a while and he couldn’t get a game out of them so if our fortunes suddenly change will it be his doing or the new factors in the dressing room?

    @Moreno

Many were calling for his head last week.

I still believe he has to be given as much time as possible to turn things round.
I don’t see a decent manager wanting to come to us.

I’ve always maintained that he would have to be sacked if we end up in the bottom 3 with only a handful of games left.
I only say that, cos a new manager, second rate one no doubt, could possibly have a honeymoon period.

I still believe this wont be necessary as we will steer clear of relegation.

Yeah Moreno. I do think there has been a knee **** reaction by many on here.

      (Quote)

  22. It’s a real diliemna I think. This is the manager that took us to 5th last season. I know there are several other factors including lack of support last summer, extra games, and injuries but Pardew knew about the extra games and the continual lack of support in August yet continued to sound off about how well we were going to do. Injuries are part of the game he knows about as well. I think the jury is still out on Pardew but perhaps not for much longer.

  23. Strange that although we only have officially 1 new signing, it feels as if we’ve just welcomed 5 blokes through the door :-)…so much going on…

We need someone to start chipping in with the goals as well pdq. Without goals we aren’t gonna start picking up many points.

Hope the new signings all have relegation clauses in there contracts… 😳

  24. Troy, B&B had you going round in circles last week ;-)…you best not try and wind him up … 😆

  25. B&B – sorry, been putting the boy to bed.
I think a successful window would be Debuchy, MYM, Haidara, Gouffran, Sissoko and a striker – with Colo staying. That for me would be very successful. I know we have lost Ba, Simmo and Xisco will leave in the summer and maybe/hopefully 1 or 2 others. But if you look at the squad if those players come in, then it ain’t too bad like. I’d maybe look at getting Douglas on a free in the summer and perhaps look at the possibility of a Carroll return in the summer, with one or 2 squad players added and we would be looking good I think.

  27. I can’t see a big name coming to us but at the same time, big names don’t necessarily mean success and even nobodies can whip a team into shape…but scouting managers is much tougher than scouting players…if Pardew can get us winning that’s all I care about. Safety, then stability, then success and then perhaps awesome entertainment and constant disappointment can follow that..

Aye, each to their own as I say. I agree with you that it would be very difficult to bring in a first rate manager to drag us out of it. That’s why I question whether Ashley had faith and was showing his nerve or whether he didn’t have much of an option!

At the end of the day, I’ll support Pardew as he is the manager and he has been after players and has got them. The team need all the support they can get at the minute and bickering back and forth won’t do anyone any good! UNITED!

No more excuses now though from Pards, you’ve got your cake, now eat it.

However, he is steadily putting up the funds to put quality players on the pitch without jeopardizing the club, unlike qpr. He doesn’t interfere in the footballing side. His only rider is that he won’t buy players over a certain age and won’t pay over the odds. Why wouldn’t a top manager not want to come and take us into Europe? What is the problem?
