Are Liverpool really after Ben Arfa?

Liverpool interest in Ben Arfa
Liverpool interest in Ben Arfa
Many Newcastle fans were happy to see the January transfer window slam shut at the end of last month.

We enjoyed a successful window, doing some shrewd business and retained the services of our ‘big players’ including the want away captain. By Newcastle’s standards this was an incredible transfer window, certainly the most successful in recent years.

The transfer window slammed shut a week ago, but despite clubs being unable to do any more business until the summer it hasn’t stopped the press from reporting what deals could happen at the end of the season. After all it is speculation that sells newspapers.

The Independent and The Mail have reported that Liverpool are considering a swoop for Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa. Both papers have suggested that former Magpie Andy Carroll could be used as a sweetener to push the potential deal through. This certainly wouldn’t be the first time that Liverpool took an interest in one of our star players, The Merseyside club lured Jose Enrique and Carroll from Newcastle. They have also been credited with interest in Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez in past windows.

Alan Pardew has stated before that he would be interested in bringing Andy Carroll back to Tyneside one day. Newcastle allegedly attempted to bring Carroll back in the summer, but the bid failed and the player ended up at West Ham on loan. Pardew is clearly an admirer of Carroll, but would he even consider a swap deal including arguably our best flair player? Personally I don’t.

The articles speak about Ben Arfa’s future being ‘uncertain’, I’m sure Hatem’s recent interview in France in which the player stated it would be a dream to play for his boyhood club PSG has maybe given the press something to exaggerate. Ben Arfa merely spoke of his love for PSG, but admittedly spoke of how he wants Newcastle to show a bit of ambition.

I certainly hope the latest transfer window has demonstrated a bit of ambition, which hopefully the club can build on over the summer. I feel if we can keep this group together and make some solid additions we could really push on, and Hatem Ben Arfa is certainly a big part of that vision. I will take these rumours with a pinch of salt. Liverpool is a bit of a sideways step as this stage, surely?

What do you guys think?.

  1. Do you really think he would go to Liverpool???

If he leaves Newcastle, and I say “IF” he would only go to a big club in the champions league like PSG.

Remember, Ben Arfa is regarded as one of the best French players so will always atract interest.

However, Can’t see the french connection breaking up after 1/2 a season.

  3. I think it’s just the papers shit-stirring again and using his chat about PSG to stir things up to be honest.

If he is to go I think better sides than Liverpool will be in for him.

And as for the Carroll swap, well πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

  4. Nice one Mark….. We won’t sell Benny! This is just like the time we stood firm against the mountains of money on offer and chose not sell Carroll 😯 πŸ˜•

  5. Next few months will be interesting to see if Ashley & Co have had a change of heart and are interested in having success on the pitch, or if the recent acquisitions really were all above staving off relegation and losing the big pot of premier league money. This current squad with one or two well timed additions over the next year or so, could really go on to achieve something big but it all depends on Ashley and where his real ambitions lie!

  6. I have one eye on the PL meeting today. They are voting to bring in rules like the UEFA FFP but for the Premier League. It’s looking at wage restrictions and stuff like that. Needs 14 votes to be accepted.

At the moment Arsenal and Chelsea are known to be for it. I guess we will be also along with other sensible sides like West Brom and Tottenham and so on.

Only Manchester City are known to oppose it.

  7. “mountains of money on offer and chose not sell Carroll”….Take your point AMF but the regime have been shown to be correct in the decision to sell Carroll….the 35m has financed almost a whole new team!

  9. Mark good read, but I think it’s just a case of the papers adding 2 + 2 and coming up with 5 there would be better clubs than liverpool keen to get him but tbh I don’t think he’ll be going after the club has showed the ambition that he and other players were wanting them to show.

  11. We’ve just got to accept that football is a transient business and players have allegiance to only themselves and their wallets [who hasn’t?] But so long as outgoings are replaced by equally good or better players…who cares? I don’t think HBA would want a move at the moment because there’s something new happening here, but as with the rest of them [Cabaye in particular] their heads will be turned by lack of ambition and success….it’s really a simple as that, and as I said in a previous post it’s all down to Ashley now!

      (Quote)

  12. To start with i think the paper is full of shite

But I wont say it is not a possible move. Liverpool could probably afford him and he would probably go for the money. Liverpool are also one of the biggest clubs on the planet (even if they have been pretty poor in the last few years).

I would like him to stay with Newcastle for as long Ameobi has been here πŸ˜€ or at least out of the BPL to PSG or someone bigger than that.

He has said he wants to move onto bigger and better things than Newcastle. Lets just hope we get a shit load of money when he does go.

  13. It would be interesting to know just what exactly the purple players at the club are on because they must know that the likes of Ashley Cole et al are on 200 grand a week etc….They’ve probably taken decent pay rises coming here from France, but the little green eyed monsters won’t take long to turn their feet itchy

  14. Santi, Liverpool with out Champions League football can not afford to throw too much cash mate… they have a big cash income via their popularity but their current wages are chewing most of that up.. They are not the finacial force you would think.. go online and check their finacials, they make interesting reading.

I have read anywhere between Β£65k & Β£80k for Colo.
I also notice that when someone comes here and does well they are rewarded with a new longterm contract. My guess is that new players eg Gouffran are offered more than they had in France eg Β£25-Β£30k and if they establish themselves they go up to Β£50k-Β£60k. More than that if they need to be kept against competing bids.

  16. Don’t shoot me if this is wrong as I am trusting the online source πŸ™‚

    Liverpool 2012 – income 188m – wages – 134m – loss is 2.8m for the year which is good.
    Newcastle 2012 – income 88.4m – wages – 53.6m – 13.3m profit – very good πŸ™‚

The profit to us and the small loss to Liverpool are more than likely due to player movments I am guessing πŸ™‚

      (Quote)

  17. Aussie probably right there. If the FFP rules say must keep within say 75% wages to income then we would be Β£12m within budget whereas Liverpool would be Β£7m within budget. their budget well over double ours.

How about: Suarez to Newcastle. Suarez is desperate to prove he is not a racist after … blah blah blah … and a move to Newcastle, with their French connection … blah blah blah … and Newcastle are need of a new striker since Ba … blah blah.

  28. LOL Stuart they haven’t won the league in 20 years true but when was the last time we won the league or a trophy? They won the champions league in 2005, FA Cup in 2006 and the league cup in 2012.

Liverpool are a far bigger club than us. Their trophies prove it.

Makes us look deluded and bitter when we say they are not a big club anymore.

He’s since retracted and said he’s very happy at the Toon. I believe him. He’ll be going nowhere in the summer and I bet he can’t wait to get in among the new boys. Neither can I!

It’s also no surprise that the article came from the Guardian and the Indie. They’ve been nudging close to the Mail for years. Shame really.

Just have a re read of my comment. I am pretty sure, no I am absolutely 100% sure I didn’t say Liverpool aren’t a big club. I said they hadn’t won the league for more than 20 years and once you get to that stage you’re no different to any club that hasn’t won the league for a long time.

My point is that Liverpool have lost the right to class themselves as a far superior club to every other club – you cannot continue to live off past glories. I believe, looking at the squads (currently), not current league position that a player would have a better chance of winning something at NUFC than LFC.

The only reason a player should choose Liverpool now is for money, not for success…

  37. I would argue that Raylors injury has cost us a lot this season. Last year his versatility and fight helped us. This year the squaddies have not performed, except for Perch.

  38. Ice, surely one we missed out on was Rem? The other might be de Jong from Ajax. We’re now being linked with him for the summer by some

  39. @Stuart

Past glories lol they won a trophie last season. Does that not count? They are in the top 5 most supported clubs in the world and will always be able to attract great players. They still win trophies with their worst squad for years. Relevant get past the first rounds with our best squad in years.

I agree on paper our first team looks better than theirs.

      (Quote)

  40. MDS aye mate one could have been remy owlheed has said they will make more signings in the summer as they dont want a repeat of this year, thats sale talk to me i see a striker and centre half coming in and thats it first team wise, would be happy to have more like but doubt it πŸ˜‰

  41. Liverpool are according to Deloitte the 9th biggest club in the world, we are 20th. Their revenues are twice ours. They are a much bigger club than us.

They are also a lot more successful.

However we have our niche and our strengths, eg stadium etc, are capable of moving up above several European clubs over the next few years.

      (Quote)

  42. some quotes from the Llambias int –

“He (Demba Ba) went out of the club his way, and we have replaced him.”

β€œNext year we will have more depth and we will have a better foundation. Then we can go for everything, then it’s different.”

β€œWe have to explore other markets (than France), though, which we do. We are still going to other markets.”

“did we make a mistake in the summer? I think we did.”

β€œWe missed out on two others (winter targets) by the way .The other two would have been on top of the five we brought in.”

β€œThis club’s finances are strong and we have a very strong owner behind it. So we can bring it (targeted players) forward sometimes if we need to.”

  45. As far as I know, Benny said a lot more than just moving to PSG. When asked about moving to clubs he said he would consider moves to Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal I believe?

      (Quote)

  46. Can’t hold much against him if he goes to a top club-on form I reckon he could get in the Real Madrid side so he is better than us, that’s just the truth.

Going to Liverpool would be a bit of a joke though, nee chance of ever winning a league title in his career, token hope of FA/Europa/Carling Cup glory.

      (Quote)

  47. Good read Mark . I can’t see Benny going to Liverpool ,be surprised if they ever did business with us again after the Carroll rip off. Didn’t they say anyone but Newcastle when they were looking to loan out/offload AC πŸ˜‰ . If they think they can swap him for Benny they are in la la land imo. It is possible he’ll go in the summer but if it’s anywhere imo it’s gonna be PSG or if it’s PL then I would guess Arsenal may come in for him as Wenger is a known admirer and they may be able to offer CL footie too. Would be sad to see him go as you’re HBA’s don’t come along too often .

[email protected] ,I agree Raylor has been missed this season ,his set play would of yielded a better goal return for sure.

Birmingham won that bloody trophy the year before! I am talking about league titles not a poxy cups. I am sure HBA won’t go to Liverpool just to win the League cup…

The question is, why would HBA go there?

      (Quote)

  49. Ice @ 47 – Well with the squad the way it is we need to get rid of someone before we can get a striker and a defender in. We have 24 names registered so if nobody goes we can only have one more in there πŸ˜‰

I don’t think Tiote will go. He’s been shite all season (surely nobody can argue that?) to be honest and hasn’t been up to much for at least 18 months. Nobody would pay the money Ashley would want. I think Colo will be off though.

      (Quote)

  50. Tbh I just equate it to if I was playing for PSG and said it was my dream to play for the Toon. Just obvious really, boyhood clubs are why you love the game, course you’d want to play for the club you support.

      (Quote)

  51. Off topic. I think we have real problem if Colo leaves this summer. and we decide to give Cabye the caption armband (then Benny will not be happy as he is been with the club longer). ideally i want Staylor to get the armband but he spends more time on the treatment table than the field.
Hmm so other option is Jonaz but he aint good enough. Tiote? not sure.
So we need Colo… give him time off in May if we get 40+points by then and try to sort it out within 6months.

      (Quote)

  52. I can’t see him going to Liverpool… But there are reasons for him to go there. They are 1 of the most famous and best supported teams in the world and they are more high profile than we are. Playing for them could enhance his reputation which could lead to other things….

I personally don’t think he will leave this summer though.
