What a Liberty!

Calamity strikes

I honestly think that when it comes to football results I’m one of the most measured guys out there.

Not in terms of guessing or predicting or anything like that as I’m awful at that. However I rarely get carried away with a win and almost never get down about a defeat providing the performance is good enough.

Until now that is. The 1-0 defeat to Swansea has left me feeling pretty peeved if I’m being honest. You may have noticed that I didn’t bother with a match report after the game such was/is my feeling of anger about the game. What I don’t get, and what I’ve been trying to piece together since Saturday, is why this defeat in particular has annoyed me so much.

Do I dislike Swansea? No I actually quite like them and have nothing against them unlike a Liverpool or Sunderland for example. Do I dislike their manager? Players? Fans? Not especially. I sometimes think a lot of praise is given for little reason but generally they deserve it, play nice football, keep themselves to themselves (unlike a Harry Redknapp for comparison purposes) and just get on with it.

Was I annoyed with our performance? Not really. I thought we played well and equalled the pass masters of the Premier League and had a fair share of the chances. Tactics? Again no real issues here. Player performance? Nope, all clear here also.

So what has left me feeling so let down about the Liberty?

I think it’s the realisation that we’re still in the relegation mix. Results and performances have improved no end and we most definitely deserved something from the Liberty Stadium, but ultimately we got nothing which doesn’t help us in the short term.

I keep hearing that we have a squad to challenge in Europe AND secure safety, but league tables don’t lie after this amount of games and we’re still in the danger zone. Games are running out and we need points on the board pretty quickly.

We should know more than most that you’re never too good to go down!

  1. Fergie would be getting torn apart by some on here if he was our manager, fancy not bringing shrek on until they were losing, he should be more “proactive” rather than “reactive” 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  2. Richie, the way things are sitting at the moment it looks like Fergie has made a mistake. I mean Man Utd have a huge lead in the league, there’s no reason to rest Rooney.

  3. MM…Aye, and fancy making a sub with only 5 minutes left too 😉 😆
loved seeing his reaction to the sending off…priceless

  4. Moreno – Juve are my 2nd club. First team I ever saw play live at about 5 or 6 yr old. My uncle worked inTurin and we went out to visit him and he got us tickets. What an atmosphere and ironically Michael Laudrup was alongside the best player I ever saw – Michel Platini.
Fancy my dad and uncle taking me to see a team in black and white when they are both mackems.
Mind NUFC were nee Juventus back then like 😆

  5. Rio just went right up to the refs face and sarcasticly clapped him 😆 God don’t you love a good loser ,he’ll be on twitter later you wait.

      (Quote)

  6. Kim…Aye 😆 great manager like but I just can’t stand him at all 👿

Sharpy… I’d loved to have gone to Juventus’ stadium, the old one is no more though 🙁 mind I haven’t done bad, I’ve done the Bernabeu, Camp Nou, Stade Velodrome, San Siro and Bloomfield Road

      (Quote)

  7. Kim – Rio is a *****, went and shook the blokes hand straight after that. God I love seeing Fergie ****** off 😆
I think Real Madrid would have won anyway but well never know now – oh well, get over it you Manc tossers 😛

  8. What a run for Mourinho, 2 wins against Barca and a win at Old Trafford and the Camp Nou in 2 weeks 🙂 Humble chap he is too, not like old red nose the silly old twit. Fancy leaving Rooney and Valencia on the bench until so late in the game 🙄

      (Quote)

  9. 😆 got to love Roy Keane, how many Reds are shouting at their TVs at him right now 😆
Cracking goal by Modric as well to be fair

      (Quote)

  10. Ritchie – I can’t remember too much about it to be honest, can’t even remember who they were playing, but the Italian fans were mental and Platini was class.

Here I see our game is on ITV4 at 4.30pm on Thursday neet 😯

      (Quote)

  11. Well it was entertaining to watch and it’ll keep me going until our game on thursday . What time is our kick off by the way?.

      (Quote)

  12. Fergie used his resources as best as could be. Madrid are simply superior in many depts. We have seen two managers think hard about the game Fergie the hardest and did a great job.

The Barcalona Keeper was magic. Really kept them from what united do week in week out in the league getting goals when it matters.

Pardew could learn about effective subs and strategy from these two which is missing from his game. Fergie plotted a totally different game from the first leg and so nearly worked but for the red card.

Impressive watching these guys. It’s like chess. Pardew only knows English draughts and even that he is not fully clued in.

      (Quote)

  13. Ritchie – he’s a total bellend now, and he’s also a constant reminder of how old I’m getting that I was round to see him play 😥

Kim – I’m one of those sidekick people , now all I need to see is a way of not being at work til 8 bloody bells 👿

      (Quote)

  14. DAVE just watched the match and caught up on comments,i see the queen of spain has been digging holes again,i suppose once you have been in the pioneer corp you cannot get out the habit 😀 😀,or maybe hes got that CJD from eating owr much beef 😆

  15. i just wish a better coach for nufc. because great team today with a genius top pure class and need massive confident for magie. but the pardew tactic and coaching are very very poor. 🙁 shame….realy…perhaps in futur pards will be better. … 😕 why not ❓ we can hope…
    have a nice evening….

  17. fergie will pack in next season imo as Mourinho, will be m/city manager next season that will fk him right off 😀

      (Quote)

  18. YEEEEEEESSSSS GET IN!

Over the moon about that like, incredible goals, was a sending off too. Man Utd lost to the better team, despite what the modest Jose said. Handled the press conference superbly.

      (Quote)

  19. Re: the sending off..2 points.

    1) Look at where the contact was on the Madrid player then look how high he has leapt. Head height studs, putting the player in danger. Just because he jumped it doesn’t look as bad.

    2) Roy Keane said it was a sending off. He knows a thing or 2 about bad challenges and he is Man Utd through and through. Just because he wasn’t ‘looking’ at the player and there may have been no intention doesn’t mean you can have studs that high

      (Quote)

  20. Ice – do you see Jose at Man U next season mate?, reckon there could be a chance with his modest reaction tonight and Ronaldos reaction to his goal – may just be reading too much into that tho

      (Quote)

  21. Moreno/Ice-Mourinho is keeping his options open, being humble to Fergie in case he decides to step down and crown him successor 😀

Probably doing it to fire his troops up though, they were pretty average-although I’d say they deserved the win.

      (Quote)

  22. Also being an avid Madrid fan I always partake in two of the same debates with people over and over. First being, who is the best, Ronaldo or Messi and the other being who is the better manager, Ferguson or Mourinho.

There have been 15 previous meetings between the two managers – Mourinho has won seven, Ferguson has won three and there have been five draws.

      (Quote)

  23. I’m not worried yet, this kind of thing can happen against a decent side away from home, even when we’re playing comparability better. It’s not as if they battered us and they have hammered a lot of teams at home especially this season. We have games coming up against Stoke (not doing well) Wigan (beatable) and Fulham at home (beatable) even Man City are not the force they were last season and a shock point/win shouldn’t be impossible.

  24. Did anyone else read the article asking questions to the American Anzi supporter? Was a really good read and found out a lot about the club, doesn’t sound like your typical Russian club except for the violence and billionaire owner 😕 , sounds like the rest of Russia hates them and I’m not sure if I read it wrong but seems like Dagestan is more of the Muslim sector so I doubt there will be much racist stuff going on.

  25. SHARPY@105 its could happen mate now that GILL is going fergie would move upstairs, but my money is on m/city,defo not chelsea as their fans think

  26. Newkie,

That press conference was one of his best tactics of the night. He didn’t need to gloat in front of the british press or put down the man he said was the ‘Godfather’ of English football, he won and had the humility and wisdom to not bite. He endeared himself no end tonight with little wrds agreeing with Ferguson during the game, his walk off prior to the whistle and his press conference. Top class performance from Jose once again to prove why he is the best manager in the world

      (Quote)

  27. My dad is so pro-British team doing well in Europe that he is so biased. Unless it is NUFC, Bayern or Dortmund I am neutral when watching a match, unless its Liverpool then whoever they are against I want them to win. 😈

      (Quote)

  28. ime pleased the game is on itv4,but not happy with the pitch asto is bad for getting injurys and we dont need that at this stage

      (Quote)

  29. I’m not worried at all. 10 games, 10 points and we are sound.
QPR still have fr to much to do in my opinion and despite Villa & Reading picking up, they still have to get a solid 6 points against zero for us to even get themselves in line with us. Just can’t see it happening. Yes they are all looking like they have a bit of spirit and fight again – but we do too. If we were still looking lost and lacking effort I’d be worried – but we are not. We look hungry and look like we are working for it, so all will be well come the end of he season. 😀

      (Quote)

  30. Moreno-I canne argue with that. Sir Bobby gave him the best upbringing a manager can have. Ferguson can grab his horde of trophies and shove them up his saggy ****, I could have managed Manchester United better tonight, starting with playing Rooney and leaving that joker welbeck out of it  Seriously, welbeck and Nani?…

      (Quote)

  31. Ice
I fancy Chelsea to go after Jurgen Klopp, arguably the best young manager around at the moment, and he seems like a genuinely nice guy too, which would be a nice change.

      (Quote)

  32. Ice-Yup, bit worried about Benny on astro, I know he got injured on one of those stupid pitches in the states the pre season before last, although I think that was from a bad challenge.

Still, by the sounds of things Pards says he’ll get 20 min, which could mean he’ll get 5…

      (Quote)

  33. Newkie – you snooze you loose bonnylad 😉

Ice – I don’t think Jose will go to Chelsea at all. I think you’re right like mate, he’ll be in Manchester one way or the other. The old boy at Munich could be a good call for Chelsea I reckon but I doubt he’s the man the fans want to see there. I think most want Zola or Terry and both would take the club backwards IMO

      (Quote)

  34. Ice
We will be, with his potential (mind he didn’t show it against Swansea) he will probably move to one of the big teams of Europe.

      (Quote)

  35. Andy-Yeah, the 89th minute of the flight back, he’ll let him stretch his legs down the plane. Maybe. 😀

      (Quote)

  36. Reading have Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool & Man City amongst their llast 8 games – others include Southampton, Villa & Reading. They are done for.

Villa have Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea plus relegation rivals QPR, Reading & Wigan. Lots of points to be dropped either themselves or other relegation rivals.

Wigan have an opportuity to pick up a few points I think – but again they play QPR, Wigan & ourselevs as well as games against Arsenal & Spurs,

We have some tough games also – but the key is our 6 point cushion.

I’m going to call it now that the bottom 3 today are still there at the end of the season.

I’m not convinced either of the teams relegated this season wll even make 33,34 points. A couple of wins and we re clear. 😛

      (Quote)

  37. Newkie
He’ll let him go and get the team’s mars bars at the airport when they get back. 😉
Is the team already in Russia cus I don’t remember seeing a team sheet for who went on the plane.

      (Quote)

  38. Shamrock-I think Villa might actually do enough to survive, which would be a shame. Still, just want to focus on us at the minute and hope for 3 points on sunday.

      (Quote)

  39. Nice to see an unbiased European official at Old Trafford. What a bunch of sore losers that lot are if it doesn’t go all their own way eh? If they are complaining about the sending off then how pathetic, yes it was a bit harsh but if you are going around with a high boot, studs out, with total disregard for other players then it is dangerous and you are taking a risk.

      (Quote)

  40. Andy 😛
That’s a good point, haven’t heard anything but I guess they’re flying tomorrow? And it’s in Moscow as well isn’t it, not Anzhi? Be interesting how many of their fans turn up, probably like a 20 hour drive.

      (Quote)

  41. Newkie
It’s probably even longer, train flight or leave near Moscow is how they’d get there, even if they took the train it could take a day or two as I remember reading that in the 2018 WC fans who take the train from one stadium to another will take 2 weeks 😯 . Should’ve been in England 😡 , stupid corrupt FIFA.

      (Quote)

  42. That should say “live near Moscow” mind you I can’t see many of our fans over there, as committed as many of the away group has been. I’ll be a couch supporter for that one 😎 .

      (Quote)

  43. Andy-The ruskis won’t get anywhere on their steam trains, although I was assuming their cars would be in a better condition, their roads probably aren’t 😆

I get the impression anzhi was pretty dirt poor as it was, can’t see many of their fans living in or around Moscow either but there we go. Could well be an a ghostly stadium.

      (Quote)

  44. whether or not it was a legit sending off according to the laws of the game, for me, that shouldn’t be a red card offence. Apparently, u can’t try to kick/control the ball in the air now just in case someone else is challenging for it

Anyway, I dont think it affected the result – manU went into ‘seige mode’ immediately after scoring and were undone by this approach and the ablility of the Madrid players to penetrate it. Passing and working the ball patiently around the box with all opponents in front of them yet creating the opening, with Modric the fulcrum and Higuain’s movement key

      (Quote)

  45. So everyone seems to be doom and gloom around here what are your predictions?

    I think
    Stoke D
    Wigan W
    Citeh L
    Fulham W
    Mackems W
    West Brom L
    Liverpool D
    West Ham D
    QPR W
    Arsenal L

Giving us 45 pts and definitely safe. As others have said I think 37 will be enough to stay up and I can’t believe that we won’t get at least 7 from those fixtures.

      (Quote)

  46. @135

if we go down, i’ll be shocked. As long as we don’t suffer multiple injuries to key players, we should pick up more than enough points. I reckon we’ll end up with 45-50 pts

      (Quote)

  47. SJP…I think we’ll break the 40 points and stay up comfortably.
I don’t see everyone being doom and gloom though?

      (Quote)

  48. @134-Yeah, I wouldn’t have sent him off, but manure can’t blame the loss solely on that, there was a handball in the area that could well have resulted in a pen for madrid, manure sat back too much. Plus, Welbeck should have finished his chance when the goal was wide open and he was about 4 yards out, instead of putting it straight to the keeper. It was in their hands really.

      (Quote)

  49. <<<<<<<<<<< also thinks this team has alot more fight then the team we went down with last time they just run up the white flag in my opion

      (Quote)

  50. Once we have another 2 wins under our belt I’ll feel a lot more comfortable the sooner we get to 36 the better as that just leaves a win and a draw for that magical 40 😉 . This team want’s shooting if they don’t get 3 wins and a draw out the last 10 games.

      (Quote)

  51. Man City only managed 1 against Villa and I would expect us to put in as spirited performance as them. I would like to think we can get wins against 2 of Stoke ,Wigan and Scum . Don’t see us get owt from Pool or Arsenal and WEest Brom and Fulham seem difficult for us too,as for West ham and QPR god only knows as I never saw QPR beating Saints so who knows. No the sooner we get to 36 the happier I’ll be.

      (Quote)

  52. just looked at that nani red card very reckless to say the least, was defo red card for me

      (Quote)

  53. tiote got a yellow card for 1 a bit like that but he did not connect with the player against swansea, and would of been red if he had caught the player with it,but what made me laugh was dude was standing the holding his face like he had been hit by tiote he should of got yellow also for his play acting

      (Quote)

  54. maybe the gust of wind from tiotes attempt to get the ball knocked out a couple of teeth 😯 or something but the replay showed he missed the dude by a good foot 😯

      (Quote)

  55. Kim,

We won’t need to get to the magical 40. 36 will be more than enough. Two wins and we’re safe.

      (Quote)

  56. JJ you really think 36 will be enough mate why/how i think 38 will be enough, and should get them from the three home games

      (Quote)

  57. Full team that travelled
Alnwick, Shola, Anita, Ben Arfa, Bigirimana, Cabaye, Campbell, Elliot, Gosling, Haidara, Marveaux, Obertan, Perch, Santon, Simpson, Sissoko, Steven Taylor, Tiote, Mapou

      (Quote)

  58. I agree Kimtoon on this occasion. Everyone feels positive about the way we are playing at the moment but I still would rather have points in the bag than positives feelings and opinions. While everyone talks so glowingly about 3 wins in our last six we also have 3 defeats in our last six.

I don’t see any easy games till the end.
