Game On! Newcastle v Stoke

Game On at St James'
Game On at St James’
After the football results yesterday it has become much clearer what a result would do for either team this afternoon at St James’ Park.

Alan Pardew and Tony Pulis will prep their respective sides knowing that a win could potentially see either side in with a shout of finishing the weekend sat in the top half of the table.

To be more precise, a lot depends on how many goals each team is beaten by. Fulham currently occupy tenth place but don’t play this weekend so it’s their spot up for grabs. To move into tenth all Stoke need to do is draw today, which would see us move above Sunderland, but for United to make some real headway in the league then we need to beat Stoke by two goals which will be enough to propel us into 11th. Yes it is technically possible for us to make tenth today but we’d need to win by six clear goals so it’s unlikely.

So results covered, what about the game today? Well a good place to start if you haven’t already done so is by clicking here and reading our match preview. It’s packed full of injury news, fitness worries, recent form tips, a history of games between the two sides and some fun facts and stats for your delectation.

The match is once again not on the telly box here in the UK, but it is being broadcast overseas so streams may be available for those who can’t attend the game. If you do find a good stream then please feel free to share it by leaving a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

As ever team news will be published below, in full, as and when I can get my hands on it. I dare say that whilst I’m updating it somebody will have posted it in the ‘comments’ section anyway but it will be featured at the bottom of this article for sure.

Which means it’s nearly time for kick-off in what is yet another must win game for United against a team occupying the same kind of league position we find ourselves in. It’s a chance to move up the league, and it’s a chance we simply have to take!

Howay the lads!

  1. Superb three points for us have to say marv was brilliant when he came on 😆 (B&B must be loving that)

Roll on anhzi who lost 2-0 to the bottom side on the weekend…not sure if thats a good thing or not!

  2. Sidekick,

If we get into the quarter finals of the Europa and we pick up a win against Wigan.

Then 100 per cent of our focus should be on the Europa League. That’s my opinion.
I’d be resting players for Premier League games if need be.

  6. JJ; I agree. A win against Wigan would leave us needing only 1or 2 points with eight games to go.
    Even Shearer would manage that.
If we did rest 2 or 3 players for Europa I would still expect us to finish with 42-45 points.

  7. Well, I am pleased to be right in my prediction months ago that we wouldn’t be relegated and that Pards would turn it around, my faith never wavered for a moment…. 😀

I like where this leaves Stoke as well, seemingly no longer that robust physical side, they’re really quite pathetic and the penaly aside made about two chances. 20 Million splashed on Kenny Win and Peter “the daddylonglegs” Crouch put our Jan purchases in perspective. Would be nice to see them back down below, think Villa will be safe to be honest. Mackems though… 😆

Agree with JJ-Throw the first team at Anzhi and assuming we get through and win the next PL match it should be our priority. Outside of staying in the league and 5th/6th position for Europe, the league matters little. Some “spending money”-we won’t need bragging rights when we unleash Shola on the mackems again anyway

  8. In the next game we play Wigan and Villa play QPR, so bottom teams are going to get points again. It’s wierd how there is a group of 5 teams all on 33 points. I think it should be our ambition to end up at the top of that group of teams, certainly on current form we are getting more points than them. We play Fulham at home soon so could use that game to get above them and Stoke, West Ham and Norwich are all on poor form. So I think a 10th place finish in the league is realistic target and we should be all guns blazing in Europe now.
