Has Captain Colo played his last game for us? And who should succeed the curly-haired one?

Colo's gannin yem...
Colo’s gannin yem…
It’s nice to see that Fabricio Coloccini has been given permission to travel home to Argentina for a bit of treatment on his back.

Apparently our El Capitano has fractured two bones in his back after completing a rather acrobatic overhead kick clearance against Southampton over a week ago.

Colo is being treated by the Argentinian FA so it’s not like he’s gone home on a jolly or anything like that, but whilst he is there I suspect some of those “personal problems” that became apparent during January will be on the agenda. If you recall it was San Lorenzo who wanted him in January, and Colo wanted to go to them, but the fact they couldn’t offer any money for the player proved to be a rather large stumbling block and in the end there was no way out of his fresh new deal with United so he stayed, at least until the summer anyway.

So here he is pictured at a San Lorenzo reserve game, which is unlikely to quell the speculation that he’ll be away in the summer. This image was taken from San Lorenzo’s Twitter account and is no doubt being used as a PR initiative by them, but it doesn’t bode well for the longer term future of Fabricio Coloccini and United.

To be honest I don’t really have a problem with it. He supports them apparently, his Dad works there, and just because he’s fractured two bones in his back it doesn’t mean that he has to be strapped to a bed to recover or anything like that. In fact my Brother-in-Law has done much the same and is pretty much free to move about as he likes as long as he wears this bodysuit thing under his clothes which you can hardly notice in fairness.

However if, or when, Colo leaves he will be leaving more than a hole in our defence. He is our current Club Captain so that is a role that will need filling should he pack his bags and head home. Who is the man to fill that role though?

Yohan Cabaye has worn the armband in recent weeks and looks to be at the head of a French invasion which sees many of his compatriots line up along side him each week. Cheik Tiote has also worn the armband on occasion as have Jonas Gutierrez and Steven Taylor. For me Cabaye is the man for the job but who would be your pick to succeed Colo if he does leave in the summer?

  2. As well as Colo, I’ve got a feeling that Willo may have played his last game for us as well. I haven’t seen any reports of him being ill or injured, yet he hasn’t been involved with the team at all recently and doesn’t even appear to have taken part in training on wednesday, having looked at the pictures that were released by the club:

I’m wondering if there’s been a falling out with Pardew after his tactless and disrespectful ‘other guy’ remark a few weeks ago.

As things stand it looks like we’re down to the bare bones again as far as centre backs are concerned. We’ll just need to pray that Mbiwa and Saylor can stay free of injury for the remainder of the season, otherwise we might need to start involving some of the youngsters again. It would probably explain why a few of them – including Curtis Good and Remie Streete – were training with the first team at Benton yesterday.

  3. Michael – With Mbiwa, so far so good. I know its early, but, from what I’ve seen, he could be the best of the lot if he stays as long as Colo.

  4. B&B…Agree about Woodgate, the lad was class but just wasn’t fit enough and I loved auld Pheeleep Albear but he was better going forward than he was at defending(not that he was bad at that either).Legend

      (Quote)

  5. MIchael Conway – yeah I remember both mate, saw them play many a time, and both were very good defenders. But, I agree with B&B , people always remember the best bits. Albert is remembered more for his goal against Man U (5-0) than his defending and Woody was injured too often. If we’re talking defending – it’s Colo for me like.

ST – yes mate, we absolutely need to replace players like Oba and Willo – even if we have no Euro cup games next season. The Brighton game was evidence of that this season, when Oba in particular was gash!. We need all players contributing when called upon. I get that they are back up players and aren’t going to be of equal standard to the ‘purple’ players. But if we (the club) didn’t believe Routledge was good enough back up, then Obertan definately isn’t. Is Willo that much better than someone like say Ramage.
These players shouldn’t just be for cup games either though mate. Oba is only about 23 and should be desperate to play every single game.
It’s nowt personal towards them, I just don’t think they are good enough to help progress our club.

  6. Pardew says Shola is a warrior for Newcastle. If he’s considered a warrior then I’m a worrier.

      (Quote)

  7. B&B/Michael – Also agree about MYM, think he will only get better with experience but looks very good.

Ritchie – spot on regarding Albert and better going forward, and that the blokes a legend, but he was nee killer Kilcline mate 😆

  8. Won’t be in the Europa next season?? 😯 …neggers 👿 😆

    ChrisG…Aye, it’s a bit of a strange one that 😕

  9. Sharpy…. 😆 good old Killer, he was what was needed at the time, did a job for us.

      (Quote)

  10. Chris G – do you think that Pardews ‘other guy’ comment was simply a mind fart moment and he just forgot his name?. Pardew is never normally that tactless – even when speaking about the likes of Ranger who didn’t deserve the lickings of a dog!. I agree if he meant it the way it was said it was very tactless and disrespectful – but I would also say out of character for Pardew.

      (Quote)

  11. Ritchie – he kept us from the drop into the old 3rd division mate. Doesn’t bare thinking about .
He’s a top bloke as well though. Met him a couple of times at these OAP 5 a side tournaments they used to have at the Arena in Newcastle. He was mobbed by fans old enough to remember him and loved it.
Wasn’t he KK first ever signing?

      (Quote)

  12. Sharpy…Aye I think he was the first signing….I didn’t realise you were old enough to play in the OAP tournaments, you learn something new every day 😉 😆

  13. Colo’s been poor this season. We look better without him and Mbwia looks a great prospect.

      (Quote)

  14. Sharpy, Williamson: the most competent 4th choice defender we’ve ever had. discuss.
Just look at the teams our sort of level though, the drop in quality from first team to back up is on the whole – huge. we all know roughly our strongest XI, we can’t expect a player that would be almost on a par with our first team quality to come in and have to wait for two players to get injured to feature. unless we throw money at them, which we won’t. It’s not the back up players we should care about, it’s whether the youth coming through have the potential to oust the first team.

      (Quote)

  15. ST…Although I’m not a “great” Willo fan, I agree, he’s quite willing to take a place on the bench without whingeing about it (seemingly) and I can’t see us getting anyone better as 4th choice unless it was an up and coming youngster maybe.

      (Quote)

  16. @Richie
Yeah that’s exactly the level I’m on. I think, striker aside, it’s probably the same stage we are at with all positions of our team. It’s a good problem to have though, it shows that our starting XI can’t be improved much more and it’s just fine tuning the squad now.
Although I guess recent events and rumoured fall outs make the “seemingly” pretty relevant 😐
I’d be up for selling Willo when Good is ready.

  17. Personally not fussed about Colo for 2 reasons:
    A) we need pace in CB and e doesn’t have it.
B)we need a solid, no nonsense good in the air defender and that’s not Colo.

    Love Taylor aswell personally.

Colo is 31-year old so we would naturally have need z replacement. so happy with Yanga Mbiwa aswell, excellent against Anzhi and Stoke.

Pissed off about tonight been to about 20 matches in last few season and never seen Benny start!! 🙁 🙁

Prediction: I see a draw but hope I’m wrong cos that would send us out!

    Need Cisse to play well.
And Why does Pardew refer to Ameobi as some type of Drogba warrior-style big game player??

    Deluded!!

      (Quote)

  18. Curtis Good may be in contention next year. from all accounts he did well on loan. Though he could probably still use a year in a the Championship before he’s ready. Replacing Collo and finding another striker will need to be the business this summer I reckon

      (Quote)

  19. Voted for Cab after much deliberation. He can be too nasty on the pitch for my taste. However, I’m just not convinced by Saylor. If we had Collo back playing like last year, not convinced he would get a game ahead of M’Baiwa

  21. morning all, travelling up the game for today and looking for any tips on decent parking in the toon?
tried a couple of people through parkatmyhouse.com and had no joy.
free or cheap parking in the centre if poss 😆
    any ideas be much appreciated

  22. Colo has been a goner since the argie scandal 😥

He can and most likely will be replaced but probably in the mould of mirin or someone of that ilk.

One way to ensure that Cabaye stays is that we make him captain.

Anyone else got pre match jitters already

  23. I am a big believer in an english captain but other than taylor who is there?! 😕

  24. RAM your not saying what time you get there?park to the side of rvi hospital in grandstand rd its right on the by-pass two min walk to sjp i park in there but you must get there by about 5pm its free parking after 6pm but you wont get in if you leave it until 6,hope that helps

  25. cheers ICE, well hoping to arrive about 5pm leaving at 1 for a near 200 mile journey and getting off straight after the game.

  26. Rambo…As Ice said @108 or sometimes on Euro nights I’ve parked at Arthur’s Hill clinic(behind the old brewery) or in the streets around there, you may get kids asking to look after the car but I never paid them and never had bother either, check for any poarking signs though as it’s been a while since I parked there. Usually I just used to park near S.Gosforth metro though and get that into town

      (Quote)

  27. RAM thats a good time,so when you come over the tyne bridge follow up the by-pass take turn-off for hospital and the car park is your first left about fifty yds down

  28. ST – that’s my point mate. I’m not looking at the past, I’m looking at progression. You’re on about teams around our level – what do you class as ‘our level’?. Personally I want us competing with the likes of Lpool, Arsenal and Spurs for 4/5/6th spot as I think Man U, City and Chelsea are out of reach in terms of the quality of player they can afford. At present Spurs have Dawson, Gallas, Vertonghen, Caulker and Kaboul to come back. Lpool have Agger, Skrtel, Carragher and Coates. The gunners are also light at CB IMO with Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Koscielny and Squillaci.
Spurs more so than the others are able to rotate their CBs and all appear happy with that set up – none demanding a move that we see anyway.

Don’t forget tho that Saylor spent much of this season and last out injured, and we have only recently acquired MYM. For us to be relying on Willo and Perch as CBs at times is no good mate.
I’m grateful to Willo and think he always gives his best, but I think he’s out of his depth at this level.

I’d like to see the likes of Good and Streete come through the ranks, but if Colo leaves in the summer then I think we need 2 CBs in and Willo out. Saylor, MYM, Sakho (or of similar quality) and maybe someone like Grant Hanley (Bburn), Craig Cathcart (Bpool) or my preferred choice being Alex Pearce (Reading) who is out of contract in the summer and could be got on a free. That would give us great strength in depth IMO and would move us forward.

      (Quote)

  29. Rambo – another option worth consider is parking at one of the metro stations mate at getting the metro into town, cheaper and probably quicker getting away after the game.

      (Quote)

  30. <<<<<<<<< went for caybeye but would of picked taylor its only his woefull injury record that stoped me voting for him.hes a good player taylor when he is on the pitch though.

  31. To be honest am not bothered about Colo leaving and stuff as he did improve our defence in recent past, now we have players who can step in but what i would like the club to do is if colo leaves find a replacement who can compete from the bench as i see STylor and MYM capable to hold the backline as their own but am worried about ST’s injury so need another quality young CB…..
Also am sure the club will invest in a Striker and a wide wing man or attacking midfield mastero….. what do you think guys… r v ready to fight 4 the top spot if we do get that 4 players?

      (Quote)

  32. SSN – confirming the inevitable that Benny doesn’t play tonight. Also that Angie have all players back, including Willian.

It’s ganna be a tough un like 🙄

    —————– Elliott —————-
    Simmo – Saylor – Yanga – Haidara
    ———- Tiote —- Cabaye ———
    — Jonas — Sissoko — Marv —-
    —————- Cisse ————–

Our strongest 11 available for tonight IMO

  33. Considering Mbiwa can’t even speak English yet I think you have to see his talent, such a vital area as far as communication is concerned and its all gone well so far..

      (Quote)

  34. As far as Williamson well, even alone he would be better than a bramble/boumsong pairing, fine as a 4th choice although I’ve yet to see much of Good and jury is still out on whether he can make the grade..

      (Quote)

  35. NEWKIE pity he does not speak English yet is learning, from the little we have seen of him he reads the game very well imo

      (Quote)

  36. Richie @115 , Why does that not surprise me ,the guy is a waste of space and attacking a women makes him the lowest of the low imo. I see he’s been contacted by Workington Reds but ignored their calls and text saying he’d rather play for his pup team . The way he’s going he’ll be lucky to get in the local pub team 🙄 .Can you believe the guy has 46,000 followers on twitter 😯 there sure are some idiots about if they feel they’re time is best spent following that moron ,so glad we got shot of him .

  37. Looking forward to the game ,would like to think we got enough about us to get a win ,gutted Benny ‘s not playing though .ESPN 7.30pm lads ‘n’ lasses.

  38. SHARPY apart from SSN everyone is reporting that William is out with hammy,if his hammy is a bit iffy I hope he plays

      (Quote)

  39. Newkie ,I agree about Mbiwa ,looks the business so far ,let’s face it even if he could speak English alongside Saylor he has the Geordie accent to get his head around too .

      (Quote)

  40. Ice-that’s what I thought mate, considering he’d only be getting vague shouts and pointing from Santon/Saylor/Perch/Elliot/Simmo he has done well so far purely on instinct, so should improve steadily and fingers crossed by next season he will be fluent enough on the pitch 😀

I see ranger is up to his old tricks, can’t some G put a cap in his *** and let us be done with him…or can’t we ban him from anywhere north of Darlington?

      (Quote)

  41. Ice ,I reckon he’ll play can’t see SSN being wrong tbh ,could be Anzhi playing games though .

      (Quote)

  42. Kim-I was going to mention Mbiwa being better when he could speak english and superb when he can master Geordie, but as we only have Tayls nowadays… 😥 Just as well tayls is understandable though eh 😆

  43. Ice-they ditched us when they knew the other English had games, did they switch us for Chelski? no shock there I guess…

      (Quote)

  44. Newkie Could be worse he could be in a team with Gazza ,his accent is well solid 😆 Also don’t forget Shola and Sammi are Geordies too as is young Campbell and Harps so there is a fair smattering of the local lingo in the team. 😉

  45. Ice@133 ,Thought I read that BT had the rights next season along with some of the PL games as well all pay per view ofcourse fleecing gets. 👿

said ITV and gives a write up,been a switch the gits

      (Quote)

  47. @Liam
I don’t mind tbh, I feel the ability to speak English is important. But the last few years has put me right off English players – quality for money is so much poorer, and the having more “passion/loyalty” than foreign imports is just a myth.
    @Sharpy
I see us at Everton’s level at the minute, maybe higher come the start of next season. Spurs is definitely the model we should aim for, but if you look back a few years ago they had a fairly average squad (Jenas/Bentley etc), they’ve only got there through selling big guns (Carrick/Keane/Berbatov/Modric) and investing in youth that at the time would have been worse than their back up players, but have developed to become first team players like Walker and Carrick.
So if your suggesting selling Williamson and buying someone worse that has the potential to be better then I am all for it, but I woudn’t sell him for a 26 year old that is only slightly better. Just pointless and detrimental to squad stability imo.

  48. KIM aye robbing gifts, only way round it is get a dream box@15 quid a month then you can get any game broadcast from anywhere as long as you have internet,I gave mine to son,it was tops

      (Quote)

  49. Kim-True, but Taylor is our only first team player, and as was mentioned earlier he’s possibly there but for the grace of Colo’s injury/fallandering.I love Shola but would give him a pay as you play contract, keep him around til his mid 40s when he’ll still terrify mackem children at night. Harps was a top bloke and decent back up but I wouldn’t begrudge him a move to warmer climes, if he wants it. Did forget about Campbell though! But he’s still well spoken.

Gazza wasn’t the sharpest plank either which doesn’t help with the accent, same goes for Carroll 😆

      (Quote)

  50. KIM cheers for trying mate,,think I will just go to game, you can pay at the turnstiles it only 20min drive for me

      (Quote)

  51. Newkie ,yeah it’s more in and around than in the team really. They should have fun talking to the fans though ,wonder if they will pick up the local accent like Julio Geordio the football character on Harry Enfield and chums 😆 I noticed Dietmar Hamann has a strong scouse lilt in his accent now poor sod 😆

  55. Ice – I hope you’re right mate, Willian is their danger man IMO, most attacks go through him.

ST – Willo is 29 mate, for me with players like Good, Streete, Dummett, Tav, Mbabu and Satka coming through the ranks I think we should look to replace Willo with a CB aged 20-25 (ish).
Like I say Alex Pearce would be a good shout for me like, 24yr old, PL experience, available on a free and better than what we have now.
That said, if they went for Kurt Zouma from St Ettiene, 18yrs old I wouldn’t be too disappointed either but I see him at one of the top clubs to be fair.
