Game On! Newcastle v Liverpool

Game on at SJP!
Game on at SJP!
Our penultimate home game of the season will see us do battle with Liverpool this afternoon, with a win having to be the ultimate aim for United.

In truth Liverpool are probably quite happy they are back to playing football after the last week, but there is no getting away from the fact that they will miss Luis Suarez.

It’s up to Newcastle to take advantage of that fact and make them pay. If they can do that and grab the three points then we’ll have just taken a huge, arguably total, step towards ensuring we have Premier League football next term. If we don’t then we look at other results and see how things are looking, but almost certainly the issue will drag on for at least another week.

Moving onto the game, and if you’d like to read a bit more background about the fixture then why not have a look at the match preview? You can view it by clicking here should you wish to update yourself on the injury situation, or take a look at the recent history between the two sides.

The game itself will be live on ESPN so there is hope for those who can’t get inside the ground to watch the game. Streams should be available as it’s being broadcast on loads of channels at home and abroad so all I ask is that if you find one then please share it by leaving a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news, as is always the case, will be added in at the bottom of the article as and when it becomes available. I’m at work again so once more somebody will be adding it in for me.

That’s just about it really. I’ve nothing more to say and must, like everyone, wait to see what fate awaits us this afternoon. I’ve tried not to mention it, but hopefully our efforts and endeavour are much better than what we witnessed in our last home game!

Howay the lads!

  2. Munich…yup. too depressed to sleep. I’m not even angry right now I’m just utterly confused. Yeah, that cross was an absolute peach. Probably the only good play all day. But even if we’d scored and kept playing as we were (when we were good for about 5 minutes) they would still have beaten us, it would have just been 4-1 or something instead. Staylor was horrific, shame as he’d started to prove me wrong a few months ago but looks like captain calamity is back.

  3. Newkie, couldn’t agree more mate. I saw the toon here in Germany preseason and I thought…what is this crock of ****…

We have a saying in Germany that the fish stinks from the head…Pardew believed his own media hype from last season and we all bought into it.

I don’t believe that Pardew has the changing toom to be honest. Simmo, and Williamson would have performed a lot better today than several of our high profile stars, but are castigated as useless by the fans because they don’t have the foreign flare … 🙁 This relegation battle has come way too early for our new Frenchies, and the manager Pardew is on serious melt-down mode.. 🙁

      (Quote)

  4. Newkie, hang on in there mate, we may escape by the skin of our teeth, but our manager needs to get his team sorted out NOT to take the game to the opposition. We CANNOT do it with the level of confidence and understanding we have in the team at the moment 🙁
We really need to batten down the hatches and just get over the line oin the big league for next season.

Then Ashley should get a footballing manager line up as contingency plan, give Pardew 8 weeks of the new season, and if he perfoms as badly as this season, bladder him and bring in the new man.

Stability is one thing, incompetency is something else.

  5. Munich…aye…our pre seasons have been shocking for yonks though, I mean, leyton orient!? And there’s no doubt we sucked in this one, but I didn’t think much of it at the time. Doh.

Yeah, seems to be growing on me that Pards did everything he could last year because he knew to save his reputation he had to put a shift in. This year he just thought it would all be the same. It is hard to tell what the deal is with the players. Always said Simmo and Willo took too much flak, it’s interesting on the eve of our biggest mauling in decades neither were present in the side.

As for the frenchies well, I think we all worried about the massive shift of players, and I think it’s pretty clear Cabaye isn’t a leader either. Last year we were fed all the bullshit on team meals and how newcastle had such good team spirit blahdy blah.

Funny now when you think about it, our best player this season was probably Demba Ba, and he was playing for himself! You honestly couldn’t make it up 🙄

      (Quote)

  6. Munich-aye agree mate. We really really should be capable of one more win which should see us over the line. But then Wham will have Carroll and Nolan who will have their tails up vs us and Arry at QPR would enjoy taking us down with him-he’d probably be linked with us if we get relegated as well…

Ashley definitely needs to be looking around, I was willing to give Pards until around November to see what the new season brought, but agree on about 8 weeks now. He feels under pressure but this is a high pressure job, we’re one of the biggest sides in England and in reality he’s had more support than a lot of our managers have had.

      (Quote)

  7. Newkie, don’t get me started on Demba Ba mate, I got battered on here cos I spoke out against Cisse whilst at the same time praising Demba Ba’s contribution.

We never replaced Demba Ba’s goals, and Pardew thought he could do it on the cheap with Gouffron, whilst keeping his eye on his real striker target for next season (whoever that may be) but unfortunately Pardew got it wrong, you pay 30 bob, you get a thirty bob player. his true target for next season may not even come off … 🙁

      (Quote)

  8. Munich-you and I were in the same boat there then mate, I had the same treatment! Time and again I heard about how once he left we would make far more chances and how he upset morale but once we bought Cabayes best mate Debuchy then everything would be hunky dory and all the lads would get on great. Absolute *****.

It’s just the classic fan flavour of the month treatment though. Last season it was Simmo/Willos fault we didn’t get CL. This season it was Ba’s fault (or the other two when they appeared) or it was Shola’s fault for coming on as a sub or it was Obertans fault blah blah.. And yet, on the eve of the worst performance I have ever seen, not one of them was present…

sacked months ago for me mate.

even after the 7-3 defeat to arsenal he was piping about lack of freshness, experience etc. forever looking into training next week to make changes..

the guy is a walking deluded excuse that did great last season or perhaps was lucky due to the excellence of Ba.

As a supporter of the toon since 1967,this display had me for the first time leaving the match with 10 minutes to go because of the inept display of so many, cant understand the critisism of perch at least he tried ,when tiote went off sections of the leazes jeered but predominantly there was silence. When my son and I arrived yesterday thinking he will show intent and attack these to make up for the derby and saw our team set up,it was the mark of a man devoid of ideas or confidence, his half time subs should have started and tiote and gutti were anonymous and inept players body language showed they were frightened to lose playing high balls to a lone striker being marked by a wiley centre half whose legs have gone but whose football brain is intact. Now to answer Troys poll about leaders and followers in certain walks of life you are employed in a roll with life or death consequences the forces ,emergency services, where a leader must make decisions and take ownership off them so having done that for 20 of my 30 years service i can speak objectively Pardew must go he is the only manager who will try to swing it by saying he was trying to defend our goals against column. Time for Ashley to hear the £18 million of his debt repayment against future TV revenue being Flushed down the pan .Will still be back for Arsenal but under present set up dread the scoreline well said Mark @ 536

True enough mate. Get Willo back in the defence tbh, he is nothing special but at least he doesn’t position himself like an absolute ****.
Mbiwa is being given the benefit of the doubt for me for being a new signing, Taylor on the other hand is an absolute joke, why people would want him captain I don’t know, he can’t even get his own positioning right, let alone marshall the rest of the defence, let alone lead the team!
What I wouldn’t give for Nolan’s leadership right now.

Just done the PL predictor, I have us on 38 points, Villa on 38, Wigan on 35,with their game left to play. Fucking ridiculous that it could even come down to goal difference for us.
Can’t see us getting more than a point.
I think Villa will beat the mackems, draw away at Norwich, lose at home to Chelsea (though they have a good record home to them if memory serves)
Wigan I reckon will beat Swansea home, lose to West Brom/Arsenal away.

  18. I’ve just woken up, and yes that really did happen. I’d say that was possibly the most spineless, pathetic and embarrassing performance I’ve ever witnessed but after the majority of performances this season even that statement is questionable.

I don’t even know where to start, all I do know now is Alan Pardew has absolutely no future at Newcastle United. Forget the failings of the board in the summer, forget the stability argument, forget the comparisons to Moyes and Everton in his second season, he has to go plain and simple. The situation is becoming so bad that the nearest comparison that springs to mind is what happened at Blackburn when they stuck with Steve Kean. I’ve not felt this strongly about a managing being removed as that of Souness.

Anyway piece said, where do we go from here? As mentioned in a post yesterday I think that his mere presence now is a point of anger for the fans when they should be backing the team. Ashley needs to act in the wake of this regardless.

I’d personally go for Beardsley to lead the team for the final three. Hell I’d even trust Carr to do something being an ex-manager and all. Realistically I see us needing one point from the last three and even that is a push. Removing Pardew now might arguably give us the lift we clearly need.

I know it didn’t work so well under Shearer last time but desperate times and all that – there is even a suggestion that our position is even more dangerous this time – when we went down before we were as good as gone before shearer came on board. This time I truly believe that removing Pardew now and giving temp charge to someone could give us the lift to get over the line.

Regardless Pardew has made his position undefendable. He needs to go and IMO the sooner the better.

Unfortunately – no. Though our fear of Pardew being sacked and being replaced by someone on Kinnear/Shearer level is losing it’s point more and more!

I agree with you at 475.
Don’t understand what your going on about with people”changing their view”, i dont think i’ve seen anyone change, but even if they had surely that’s part of being a rational person. I would mock someone that never changed their mind as it shows juvenile stubborness, are you saying at the end of last year you wanted Pardew out?
Also you’ve got the jukebox saying wrong mate 😉

      (Quote)

  24. It is abundantly clear now to just about everyone, that Pardum is way way out of his depth as a manager in the Prem lge.
I have been calling for his head since October/November and and still am, but I have to say that Troy has got the reality of the situation nailed down solid.
The fault lies squarely on Ashleys shoulders. If he wont pay the money for a top manager then we might aswell just keep the turd that we already have. Swapping a **** manager for another is pointless and will achieve NOTHING in the long run.
Until Ashley realises the reality of the situation and changes/modifies his cheapskate approach, nothing will change.
But I hope he doesn’t expect to see 50k+ crowds for very much longer.
I think we could still avoid the drop, but the players need to take control, as Pardoh has shown his defensive minded negative tactics and approach to a game are getting us no where.
I maintain we need a continental coach, with flair and imagination, say like Laurent Blanc. Who would transform the players into realising their full potential.
It will never happen, but that would be my choice.

      (Quote)

  25. Solanos – sadly that is true, Ashley has proved time after time he is not prepared to pay for quality.

      (Quote)

  26. Just to add, I DONT blame Pardum for Cisse’s offsides.
Man, the lad is soo effing thick it is unbelievable.
He looks along the line, and it just doesn’t register that he is off side and he just keeps on going.
    Simply beggars belief.
It cant be denied that he has scored some wonder goals, but the simple stuff, like tap ins and staying onside are frankly beyond him.
    So frustrating.

      (Quote)

  27. Pardew has to go for me regardless of what happens but not until the end of the season. I can’t see us sacking him now doing any good.

      (Quote)

  28. Over the last few weeks Pardew’s team selection has been strange to say the least. I wonder if he’s sinking under the pressure. Why did he see fit yesterday to play Sissoko out wide, play two defensive midfielders (at home, in a game we needed to win) and still he persists with Jonas when it is clear he is out of form? Not to mention dropping Gouffran who actually scored last week! These decisions are just so poor it really is worrying.

He came out after the game and said his selection didn’t work – well everyone could have told him that before the game, that’s worrying. He has come out and said that on many occasions this season too – how many more times?

On the subject of sacking him… Well who do you replace him with, will they have the impact in the short term, will he be a long term answer too or just a short term manager? But I have to say there aren’t many managers who will survive a 0-6 defeat, following a 0-3 defeat.

On the bigger picture, I look at our previous home wins recently and in hindsight we have been very lucky – scoring last minute winners in 3 of them. Although hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Would I sack Pardew now? NO! But I am afraid he’s running out of time and to be honest if things are the same in October next season I would then sack him.

Although if we do go down – yes of course he should be sacked.

I still don’t think we will go down – I think 37 points will nearly be enough and I think 38 will keep us up, can we get that 1 point though? I am sceptical at the moment but playing away from SJP will help and I think we’ll get something against QPR at least.

      (Quote)

  29. Stuart79 – the qpr match is our only hope of getting anymore points this season.
wet spam will be licking their lips. Fat sam, Nolan, judas, all have points to make. We will lose that game.
Arsenal will deliver another humping on the last day of the season.
We may just be lucky enough to get the solitary point necessary at qpr, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we lost that one too.
One away win all season, is just beyond pathetic.
Pardums backroom staff are all as culpable as he is too.
The players have no fitness whatsoever. There seems to have been no improvement with our set pieces all season.
Do we even believe in the ‘give and go’ philosophy?
Pass and move, nope, no idea.
We have had two tactics, and we have worked hard at them all season.
    1. hump the ball long preferably in the air, because we cant win headers
    2. look for every and any opportunity to pass the ball back to our keeper, especially from any free kicks and corners we may be awarded.
Negative defensive football that wins nowt.
Old fashioned football that has no place in the EPL these days.
And it wont get us very far in the championship either.
    Mark my words.

      (Quote)

  30. the last thing we need when the going gets tough – is a team littered with frogs..

and when pardew is finally told to take a hike (sooner rather than later please!) i sincerely hope he gets another job in the prem straightaway – cos i will really miss his pre/after match comical bullshit if he doesn’t.

      (Quote)

  31. Pardz and the boys should be real proud of themselves, cracking peformance that will live in my memory for years to come. Pride, passion, desire and an unparalled work rate. Everythng you need to suceed in the pl. You could see the lads were up for it..what a show..

      (Quote)

  32. At the end of the day, despite the absolute battering that we got today, I must says that the Liverpool front two of Sturridge and Coutinho were absolutely brilliant. Their movement without the ball is the main reason why they battered us. They were making nippy runs into the channels and giving their midfielders loads of options to play through balls.
Combine that with a suicidally high toon defensive line, and a toon midfield lacking shape, understanding, and guile, and you have receipe for disaster.

Pardew out, but not yet I’m afraid, cannot see sacking him with three games to go achieving anything.

      (Quote)

  33. something like that Aussie.
You manage to read our team strategy and ethics so well.

      (Quote)

  34. Munich – you say “Pardew out, but not yet I’m afraid, cannot see sacking him with three games to go achieving anything.”
You are most likely right, but tbh I cant see much changing by keeping him either.
From what I can see, it is down to the players now to find that one touch of magic/luck. Pardoh is irrelevant and ineffective.
I would let him go tomorrow as his input is only making things worse.
Give Peter Beardsley the job to the end of the season, and see what happens.

      (Quote)

  35. Problem is I fear it’s too late for any half decent manager (supposing they’d come ) to make a difference. Everybody needs to take a long hard look at themselves after yesterday ,Ash ,Pards and the players too. Shambolic performance by all concerned ,but Pards has been gutless with so many of his team selection and tactics ,playing for a draw at home when we desperately need 3 points is a disgrace . I watched match of the day last night and Stoke and Wigan gave it there all, both teams set up to attack with passion and they have real belief they can survive . I don’t think 38 points will be enough even if we could snatch a point from somewhere sadly. Still very upset at the whole situation but can’t say I’m surprised ,a right thrashings been on the cards all season tbh.

      (Quote)

  36. Beardsley’s Boots, it stands to reason that you will be pushing for yourself to replace Pardew mate 🙂

Nah, seriously, my statement about not sacking the knacker yet didn’t come easily. At the end of the day the players need to do the business. I cannot believe that they don’t have it in them to get us over the line. A gamble I know, but surely we can do it.

“Once” we are safe we can take stock of the situation.

I think there has been a collective break down throughout the manager and coaching staff. Donachie, Carver, Pardew, all defenders, Stone renowned for effort over skill, and apart from Donachie, average ones at best. What more can we expect from this top team managing a bunch of foreign internationals ?

      (Quote)

  37. BB ,That’s already been suggested and I agree he couldn’t do much worse really . I think Pards has to go what ever happens, now or seasons end , he’s been given the tools to get the job done and failed and I don’t want him in charge playing more hoofball in the championship cause we’ll never get back up. Fact is we went around 25 mins yesterday AT HOME before getting a hold of the ball properly and it’s not on ,not on at all.

  46. Cannot ever remember being so humiliated yesterday as during that match. Watching in a bar in Cologne surrounded by Liverpool supporters… If there had been a mouse hole in the floor I would’ve crawled through it… It seemed that Liverpool had twice the number of players on the pitch. For every toon player that got the ball there were 2 or 3 liverpool players around him… They were better than us in every position. Could not believe that in the last minutes toon were pas g t back and time wasting like they were the ones in front. Even a consolation goal would have shown a bit of passion.

If we had been 0-0 at half time at least that would have justified partly the defensive team, but even defensive, we were just hopeless.

I have a very bad feeling after that. I don’t think sacking pards will help, not with just 3 games to go, so reluctantly I say keep him for now but got to think of changes if by some miracle we stay up.

As I’ve said numerous times. The manager is the most important role in any club. Ashley needs to invest in a top manager but that requires paying top dollar.

Paying £500k per year won’t attract anyone of note. Though it would be good if players and managers were on a low basic and topped up by performance related bonuses but it doesn’t work that way. Top managers won’t work under those conditions and therefore I see it a fruitless exercise of sacking Pards until Ashley changes his “business model” 😯

  53. Troy@594, don’t misrepresent me there mate… your rider “Not that the ‘No’s” rate Pardew its just we don’t believe we can attract a top manager” is absolutely not my opinion. I believe we could attract a top manager, whatever that is.

I am a “no” because I believe we should wait until the last three games are over before taking stock.

Carver in charge for the last 3 games, hasn’t he been coaching the same bunch of wasters all season ? There again, he is a geordie.
