Newcastle Bid For Striker?

Newcastle bound?
Newcastle bound?
It is been confirmed several times that Newcastle’s main objective this summer is to sign a new striker. We have been short of attacking options since Demba Ba was sold to Chelsea in January, which followed the sale of Leon Best and the release of Peter Lovenkrands. Two players we didn’t replace when they departed.

It is being reported today by Talk Sport today that Newcastle are readying a Β£12 million bid for Vitesse striker Wilfred Bony. The Ivory Coast striker bagged an impressive 31 goals in 30 appearances last season, he has also scored 8 goals for his country in 20 games. No matter what league you are playing in, a goal ratio that betters one in one is rather good.

Wilfred has been linked with the club before and was touted as a potential replacement for Ba in January. Newcastle have targeted multiple forwards this summer with Darren Bent and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continuously being linked with a move to Newcastle during the next transfer window. I would be surprised if Mike Ashley would agree to spending big money on more than one striker, although if Shola Ameobi is moved on then we find ourselves very short of numbers.
Veteran and Mackem slayer Shola’s future is in doubt as the striker wants to consider his future, he has been linked with a move to The Championship.

Papiss Cisse needs assistance and some real competition next season up front. He only really had Ameobi and youngster Adam Campbell that offered any alternative options tail end of last season. January arrival Yoan Gouffron could be used centrally, but he is best coming in from wide areas and that’s where Pardew chose to play him. (for 60 odd minutes before bringing him off seemingly every game)

With Bony’s fee being quite large if successful with our bid, it could be that Graham Carr and Joe Kinnear will look at a bargain basement second striker to bring in along with Wilfred. I believe we need two new strikers, that’s before Shola leave -if he does. As stated earlier it’s hard to believe that Mike will authorize bringing in two big money strikers. It could be that we pump for Bony and possibly Darren Bent or an obscure up and coming striker from abroad.

Former Mackem Darren Bent has been linked with a return to the North East with Newcastle and it has been reported that the England striker would welcome the move as he looks to resurrect his career. The 29 year old has been completely frozen out by Paul Lambert at Aston Villa and is looking for an escape from the Midlands. We all know where Darren has been, but we also know that he has demonstrated his ability to score goals in The Premier League. If we could pick Bent up for between Β£4-Β£6 million I think he would be a solid signing and would be another body in the squad.

Newcastle have been linked heavily with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of St. Etienne, but with the player in such high demand I would be surprised if we could get him to the club. Aubameyang has said he wants European football, which as we all know isn’t something we can’t offer him currently. I must say having watch this lad though, I would love to see him playing in the black and white of Newcastle United.

What do you guys think? Would you be happy with Bony?

  8. After reading in the Journal Douglas’ “imminent” transfer breakthrough story, I’m sat now waiting for Lee Ryder to come out and claim we haven’t bid for anyone.

Did anyone see the article about Ashley wanting the full 267 million pound he has spent. What a cock.

He can’t ask for that amount because he bought a club in debt for a lower price IMO (we were a top 6 club at the time), and after he has decreased the Club’s value during 6 painful years of his stewardship.

    This is from the Independent…..

…..”That quarter-final against Benfica was the first since Ashley took control. In the previous six years they reached two FA Cup finals, one FA Cup semi-final, two League Cup quarter finals, one Uefa Cup semi-final and one Uefa Cup quarter-final. Newcastle also qualified for the Champions League twice”……

  9. Ice – I’ve been saying for a while that this Pardew on holiday business is very very strange. The players are back next week. Where’s the planning then. Never hear from Carver, Stone etc either. In fact all we hear if JFK.

  12. Georgio – Am gobsmacked by that to be honest, most managers are back at “work” while ours pisses off away on holiday? Beyond belief.

Something very strange, I wonder whether Pardew has either asked or been told to take a holiday and ponder whether he can work UNDER Kinnear?

  18. [email protected] – it’s just too odd. How many seconds would it take to wonder if you’d work under that fool. Maybe I’m wrong and AP is daft enough to take a holiday now. Still don’t get it and it may be significant that no journalists are asking these questions . . .

      (Quote)

  19. Georgio, when would Pardew take holidays if it weren’t now? should he take them at Christmas time ? πŸ˜‰

      (Quote)

  20. Georgio and Aussie – judging by the amount of players signed by clubs already its pretty clear managers are no longer on holiday.

So why is Pardew? Before JFK there was no sign of Pardew being on holiday

  21. A statement released by the Newcastle supporters groups who met at the city’s Labour Club on Monday night, when Kinnear, who was invited but could not attend, said: β€œThis house declares that Mike Ashley is not a fit and proper custodian of a footballing institution that has a proud history and tradition, and enjoys one of the biggest and most fervent followings in European football.
”We call for Mike Ashley to consider his position as owner of Newcastle United and to begin a process of exiting before he does any more damage to either the club or his own reputation.β€œ

I’ve got to say, though I agree with the above statement by the 300 or so supporters, I can understand others who get frustrated with them speaking as if they represent everyone.

They aren’t elected but speak as if they are.

I’ve got mates, (believe it or not) who get pissed off with them as they do not represent their views.

As I say, I support the groups viewpoint but they should clarify that they do not represent anyone else but the 300 or so in that group.

The local rags don’t help as they publish sensationalist headlines which gives the wrong impression.

  22. Big Papa , Pardew has nothing to do with signing players. If we are after contracted players that are still wanted by their current club, the negotiations are going to be more protracted and complex. Most player movements to date have been for players out of contract or players that want out or who are wanted out by the club.

    Newcastle’s head of media – Wendy Taylor – Phwoar πŸ˜€ 😎

  24. Aussie – it seems there are lots of players that have moved despite being wanted by the selling club if you pay the right price and not a single take it or leave it offer.

Troy – do u believe the “other” people you mention would really be bothered if Ashley sold the club?

The problem is, he seems to have made it nigh on impossible to sell us. For instance, if he wants 267million to sell now, that is considerably higher than we were bought for 6 year ago (bearing in mind we were in latter stages of Europe and top 4). And he has devalued the club under his stewardship, making it impossible to sell us and get his money back and still be an attractive proposition for a buyer.

    Liverpool was sold for 200m.

  25. How can these journalist’s write such conflicting stories on the same subject on the same day? Sounds like Chinese whispers!

      (Quote)

  26. The thing that worries me about this sale talk is if ashley says feck em they want me gone, I’m not putting any more money in until its sold. I’m more interested in bringing in some quality competition up front and getting back up the table in the short term.

The club will change hands eventually more likely when the market picks up, But id rather it change hands when were back near the top with a base to build on rather than the mess the club were the last time ashley put us up for sale…

      (Quote)

  27. Why is it than when ever Joe is about the club, everyone seems to want ashley to sell up πŸ˜•
The call for ashley to sell up had gone quiet for a few years….. until now 😯

      (Quote)

  28. …”call for ashley to sell up had gone quiet for a few years”

Not sure that’s strictly true, Oswaldo. There have always been shouts for his head on a stick. Admittedly it did quieten down last year when we were in Europe, briefly. Truth is, whenever we hit a slump/shitstorm/call it what you will, the focus (rightly so) ends up being on the root cause (Fatty).
…the irony of this situation though, is we’re not actually caught up in a shitstorm. Yet.

      (Quote)

  29. BigPapa, Liverpool were bought (more recently) for Β£300m. With Man City being bought for Β£200m I’d say Β£250m for NUFC at the moment is about right. In my opinion.

    Can’t see him selling up now though. I really can’t. We’ll see…

      (Quote)

  30. I think the calls for Fatty’s head now are down to our disastrous campaign last season though, and the reiteration in the press of his magic 5-year plan not coming to fruition.

In my opinion it all rests on our activity in the transfer market this close season. He has (another) chance to get things right now and save face (ish).

I’ll believe it when I see it though.
    Ain’t holding my breath… 😐

  31. Thanks for posting the minutes of the meeting Troy. If they are trying to set themselves up as bonafide group who will be taken seriously by the club, they’re smoking something when all they come out with is the Ashley Out crap again. It has overtones of the shambles of the fans group trying to buy NUFC a few years ago. In the meantime in the real world have we bought anyone yet??

      (Quote)

  32. sorry guys. I’ll sort a couple of stories out today.

Aussie- Do you still want your piece putting up?

      (Quote)

  33. Pardew must be pissing himself laughing at Joe & Mike at the moment.

He’s swanned off on holiday when Joe has the pressure to analyse the squad and buy players.

Pards will be smurkin his huge cigar chortling at Joe under pressure, waiting for Pards to return from his jollies.

Who’s running the show now Joe?

      (Quote)

  34. Juan Mata – now that would be a good signing. And Micah Richards.

But as likely as Ashley selling the club.

      (Quote)

  35. [email protected] – Pardew went on holiday immediately after the season finished. He was then reported widely to be back at his desk 2 weeks ago. Then when JFK arrives he immediately goes on holiday again and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.
    @343 – is that a joke?

He’s not going to sell the club, not with a new cash injection rolling in. Now all he has to achieve is spend as little of it as possible.
