Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has stated he would like a move to England this summer and has recognised Newcastle’s interest by calling us ‘a good club’. The Saint Etienne striker is in high demand and certainly isn’t short of admirers.
Russian giants Anzhi Makhachkala allegedly lodged a €20million bid for the player this week, which was reportedly accepted by Saint Etienne. It has also been rumoured that Newcastle had a bid of €18million rejected shortly before Anzhi submitted their offer for the 24 year old. However it would seem that the player himself would prefer a move to The Premier League and has opened the door to a potential move to Tyneside. The Gabon international told reporters:
“I will choose England before any other destination.
“My dream has always been to play in one of the top two leagues in the world.
“Newcastle is a good club and St James’s Park is a monumental stadium where there is passionate fans.”
Newcastle have been linked with a host of strikers over the last few weeks, with names such as Wilfred Bony, Darren Bent and Andre-Pierre Gignac to name a few. Director of Football Joe Kinnear and Mike Ashley understand the importance of adding more fire power over the summer and have prioritised a striker. I don’t like The Mirror, but in their version of the Aumbameyang story they say Joe Kinnear is desperate to get signings over the line in order to prove his worth to the fans. It’s hard to disagree with that really, if Kinnear was able to bring Aumbameyang to Newcastle it would be a real coup.
It had been reported that Newcastle had launched a bid for Ivorian Wilfred Bony, but with the striker looking set for a move to Swansea it seems as if we will look elsewhere. Aumbameyang has been a long term target for the club, but with so much interest in the player and with the price tag on his head it was a deal that maybe looked out of reach. If Newcastle can follow their interest up with an acceptable bid then it is a real possibility that we can get him over the line. As long as we act quickly of course!
Newcastle seems to be an attractive option for a player that wants to play his football in England. It is only a good thing that he has spoken about the club in such a positive manner. Sky Sports are reporting that the striker is currently on holiday and we can expect a bit more clarity on his future when he returns.
Maybe a bit too early to get excited and obviously I won’t jump the gun. The player could be using our interest to encourage other teams to look at the situation. But maybe just maybe he could be in a black and white jersey next season?! What do you think
