New season but still the same old story

Disappointment building already?
Disappointment building already?
You may have noticed I never bothered writing a match report after the 4-0 loss to Manchester City on Monday evening.

In truth I expected the loss and knew it might be heavy, but we were outclassed from start to finish and can have few complaints as, quite simply, we were beaten by the better team.

However the thing that has annoyed me the most is that we’ve seen no signs of progression from last season, no change in approach, no change of thought or anything like that. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t suddenly expect us to be 100% better than last term and I understand that it’s difficult to play against teams like Manchester City with the quality they have at their disposal, but I expected to see some signs of improvement.

For once this is nothing to do with transfers either. A new player or two may have freshened things up but it wouldn’t have addressed the problems that we, as fans, have been picking up on for months and months now.

Defensively we were poor, in midfield we were no better and in attack we were virtually non-existent. Our set pieces were awful, our passing was rubbish and we just looked like exactly the same team as we did last season. Forget the fact that it’s the same personnel, there is no sign of a new approach with those personnel and that concerns me.

Take Papiss Cisse as an example. People are quick to jump on his back but I actually sympathise with him. He is not and never will be a hold-up striker. He is a a poacher and a good one at that. As such he needs service provided for him which we just aren’t giving him. No wonder he cuts a frustrated figure. When he finally does get the sniff of a ball he is up top, alone, with a whole defence and goalkeeper to beat with little to no support from his team-mates. Either that or he’ll get into a good position only to see a team-mate go for glory rather than setting him up. I’d get fed up too.

It’s like we’ve not had a pre-season. The same problems are happening all over again and whilst it’s still early days and things may change against weaker opponents than Manchester City, I would have thought we’d see at least something different.

The fact we didn’t is what concerns me…

  1. Pardew is still the right man for the job.
In the circumstances, he has done well.
He’s had his ONLY striker unavailable throughout preseason, with a refusal to bring anyone else in.
He had both his captain and his vice captain out of sorts last year, for reasons beyond his control.
He the spine of his team ripped out after his first season, with two of his top performers being given away or sold for peanuts.
Can anyone say the number of months where Pardew has had 2 Premierleague strikers at his disposal? The answer is NINE.
For the majority he has had one, or during the end of his first season, none.
JJ it’s easy to pluck part of his tenure, you’re basically just saying “last year was ****”, there’s no need to skew stats, we all know it was ****.
The fact the HBA is still giving his all, and Colo has been talked back from the brink, is a testament to Pardew. Do you all think the same would happen with Kinnear?
Pardew is an average manager (capable of one good season at each club it seems), but if he leaves this whole house of cards collapses. There’s no way I’d stick around playing for Joe fucking Kinnear. None of the ex players have had a bad word to say about Pardew.

  2. People are saying “why haven’t we worked on Cisse being isolated”.
    You all know the answer.
Between Ashley – Cisse – Wonga, they royally ****** the whole point of our preseason as we couldn’t work on one of our big issues last year.

  3. With Lyon getting beat 2.0 last night it puts their CL birth in peril and could play into our hands re -Gomis ,it will be interesting to see what transpires now.

Solano ,I believe Pardew is now too stuck in his ways formation wise ,his insistence of one up front clearly doesn’t work ,as other teams have us well and truly sussed now. They mark Benny out the game and leave Cisse to be shackled by the CH’s ,we don’t look like scoring in a million years set up the way we were on Monday or last season. On the few occasions Cisse or Goofy got into space ,Benny took a pot shot 🙄 . Though that’s frustrating and could be deemed selfish in a way I can’t blame the lad as so often there is no one free to accept the pass.
Our defence looked dreadfull albeit against City ,they were all pulled all over the shot ,Debbie had a mare ,Tayls lost his head ,and there was a lot of petulance amongst the team, bourn out of frustration I think.

Positives were Krul ,fantastic saves ,it could and should of been 8 or 9 .0 as there were two pen shouts and 3 world class stops that another keeper wouldn’t of stopped ,well done Timmy. Dummet impressed the lad looks tidy to me and Benny full of running as always ,Anita looked bright when he came on too but was too late by then .

We simply have to get a forward with a good scoring pedigree and a decent winger to get back to a situation where we can actually threaten to score and defensive work needs urgently addressing. I would drop Debbie as he is clearly struggling at the moment and we simply cannot afford to keep giving pens away and to me he always looks liable to concede one.

As for Pards he has to look to playing more on the front foot ,he says we will be more offensive at home ,I hope that’s true .He also has to play Marv and Anita and Bigi a lot more imo.

I think he is a bit stuck in his ways, but we did have the great run in 11/12 playing one up front. And this time last year people were raging that we were playing two up front “to accommodate Ba”.
Finally the biggest issue is – we only have one good standard striker, how can we play anything other than one up front?
I agree we are very easy to suss out as a team though. These next four games define whether it will be a season of relegation battling or not.

  5. ST – you are of course entitled to your opinion mate but I couldn’t disagree more when it comes to Pardew.
I accept that he hasn’t had the support from MA in terms of players in. But by the same token, nobody in our squad is new so we should be a well oiled machine by now. We aren’t intergrating 3 or 4 new players into the team – which was the excuse in Jan.
The bloke isn’t stupid, he’s pig headed. He has 11 or 12 French players in his squad now and whilst he’s instructed them to learn English – has he learned French? – no!. They have to learn our culture, which is right – but how can he fully understand or support his players if he doesn’t learn their culture and language too.
Tactically the bloke is inept, sticking with a formation that doesn’t work, playing the same players who aren’t in form and making the same changes that never really have an impact on the game – because he’s too pig headed to admit he’s got/getting it wrong.

You mention Cisse not being properly prepared in preseason. So why didn’t Pardew start with Shola on Monday night?.
He had a much better preseason and by Pardews own admission, was fitted and stronger – plus he was scoring goals. Answer – coz Pardew is pig headed and sticks with his favourite 11 rather than his strongest 11 at the time.

Pardew goes on about us not creating chances, yet the player with the most assists last season – Marveaux doesn’t get a sniff – instead he’ll select Jonas. Anita who was his only signing last summer and is an intelligent footballer can’t get a sniff – why? Coz he’ll stick with Tiote.
Gouffran played through the middle most preseason games and looked good and scored goals – Man City game, out wide again – why? Coz he went with Cisse – again. And rather than play Gouffran alongside him for support, he sticks with this 4-2-3-1 formation – that doesn’t work.

You said yourself that you’d be happy with a young CF and winger, which suggests that you’re fairly happy with the rest of the squad. So as unsupportive as MA has been this window, Pardew is still badly underperforming with a decent group of players. The players are to blame as well, but I think played the right way they should easily be challenging for that 8th spot IMO.

  6. Its good to be back from Afghanistan to see my beloved Newcastle doing well and all is quiet 😆 Never a dull moment for us. One thing though – Ship out that sissy to Cabaye if he’s already have his head turned and not in “right frame of mind” to play – Geez, he should try go to a warzone and learn a thing or two about work ethic…..

Is Joe Kinnear going to learn French?
How can you build a well oiled machine when the key component is missing?
Would this board have accepted Shola playing over Cisse? Honestly answer that.
And mate come on, Gouffran got one goal in pre-season. If Cisse had been on the bench, there would have been uproar.
I agree with Marv. Don’t agree with Tiote – him and Anita are completely different players, if Tiote can get back to form, he’ll be a great asset.
Happy with the squad in terms of I think a couple more will get us challenging for 8th. We are miles away from teams like Liverpool.
Do you honestly think Pardew has had a cushty ride? I am not saying he is amazing. But you have just ignored every circumstance he has had to put up with.
Keegan would have walked about 4 times during Pardew’s tenure.
Do you agree that he gets on with the players? Do you agree that he gets on with the board? Well that may make him a puppet. But he is the glue holding this shambles together (even if he has been doing it with mediocre results over the last year).

      (Quote)

  9. ST – you ask your first question as if I’m suggesting JFK replace AP, I’m not at all. But I’d expect any decent DoF to have a basic understanding of languages where possible – certainly he or Chamley should.
As for this board accepting Shola above Cisse – honestly – it’s got **** all to do with the board.
The manager – any manager should select his strongest ‘in form’ 11 for any game.
When you say we were missing the main component – if you are referring to Cabaye, then as far as I’m concerned the rest of the team should still be able to perform without him FFS!.
Besides that, he played most of last season as we looked equally as gash then so he isn’t the heart beat of the team mate, far from it!.

No I’m referring to Cisse being missing in preseason.
How can we build a functioning attack without the figurehead? Imagine failing an exam and then for your resit having no access to practice papers. Sure you can read the notes, but you’ll have no proper way of knowing whether it’s sufficient.
IMO any criticism that involves wanting Pardew out means that that criticism shouldn’t be applicable to Kinnear. By now we all know that Pardew out means Kinnear in.
Can you answer my last question on the previous post?

      (Quote)

  12. ST – your comparison doesn’t make sense mate. This isn’t an exam this is a 22 man squad. So if Cisse isn’t available you change things – which is what he did by playing Shola in pre season – who scored goals. What if Cisse breaks his leg mate, is that season over?. I’m not saying Shola is the future – we need to strengthen our forward line, but on Monday night there is without question an arguement that Shola was the better option.
Pardew out shouldn’t automatically mean JFK in for me though – and it definately doesn’t!.

I will happily answer your question mate but I lost the last post so don’t know what it is 😆 I wasn’t ignoring you mate just in the middle of nee where at the mo and tinternet access is as iffy as our defence 😉

  13. I just don’t understand even after the last few months – JFK, Cisse-Wonga gate, lack of new faces, how anyone can think we can attract some top manager. Laudrup was annoyed by a lack of activity – the chairman responded by buying players. Different world to here.
Given ALL the circumstances, Pardew is the right and best man for the job here.
Again, tot up for yourselves the number of months he has had two decent strikers at his disposal during his nearly 3 years in charge.

      (Quote)

  14. @Sharpy
It shouldn’t, but it most likely does..
Ha mate, this is my point – he is damned by the fans whatever he does. If that had have gone worse, you may have said “you play the best players at your disposal if fit, regardless”.
My question was: Do you agree that he gets on with the players? Do you agree that he gets on with the board? Well that may make him a puppet. But he is the glue holding this shambles together (even if he has been doing it with mediocre results over the last year). Also how many times would Keegan have walked during his tenure?

      (Quote)

  15. ST its irrelevant that he gets on with players or the board. absolutely irrelevant. My mum could get on with the players and the board and still be a **** manager 🙂

its results that are relevant – ITS A RESULTS INDUSTRY

and its the manager that’s ultimately RESPONSIBLE for a teams results

so I ask you – with no waffle – are you happy with our results lately?

if the answer is no then your statement that ‘PARDEW IS THE BEST AND RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB’ is rubbish…

    IM GETTING PAID!

  17. ST – this may seem like I’m dodging the question but the truth is I haven’t got a clue. Quite probably I would have thought as he’s not been sacked yet.
But with the likes of Jonas coming out and saying training was too easy last season and then apologizing for Monday night – and other players have said certain things that also make me believe that whilst they may like Pardew as a person, they believe he could do more as a manager.
Do I think Hoots was liked by the players and board?. Well certainly the players and only disliked by the board coz he could persuade the players to drop their bonuses – do I think Pards could have convinced them?! – nope.
But I do think that Hoots had more tactical nouce than Pards. I agree that KK would have walked last summer though with the lack of signings.
I suppose in answer to your question – if Pardew left I believe we’d cope.
I would seriously hope that having already lost JFK as manager to his poor health, that MA who avoid putting him back in. Especially when they are young managers like Poyet and Di Matteo out of work, or experienced managers like Steve McClaren available.

  21. I think Pardew is a good competant proven premier league standard manager. When he was appointed many wanted Martin Jol. Much of a muchness iMO.

What this club needs is a manager to transform the rotten culture that has been at the heart of this great club for 50 years. KK tried and failed to win anything. SBR tried and failed to win anything.

I dont know who that man is. But as Shankley, Ferguson, and Mourinho have transformed their clubs we need the same here. The problem predates Ashley or Pardew or anybody currently associated with the club. They are not the problem. But they don’t appear to be the solution either.

His next season was outstanding, Best finish in a decade, back in europe and both manager of the year awards.

The season after the new arrivals came way too late and the momentum was lost, pardew made some ***** calls which didn’t help at all. Should have been much better and he survived by the skin of his teeth down to his previous.

He’s pretty much back where he started for me, One solid half season, 1 belter and 1 *******. I’m disregarding monday night as better teams than us would have got as bad a twatting and judging him from now West ham, Fulham, Villa and Hull in the next four. 8 points minimum…

They had us regularly playing Champions League Football. There wasn’t a team in the country we couldn’t outplay. We were superb to watch. There was a great vibe.

Pardew isn’t good enough to polish their boots. He is a solid bottom/relegation scrap and top tier Championship manager. That’s his level IMO.

kks results werent that amazing in 91-92 after the initial upturn in results the rest of the season was grind before david kelly against pompey and all that, 6-2 at wolves, 4-1 at derby with half the team sent off, fecking oxford and cambridge beating us.

They also didn’t have the same ludicrous transfer policy that pardew has to contend with. If you compare robson and souness results than fair enough as both had huge ammounts at their disposal. But Keegan had the equvilent of man citys backing back then its totally unfair to compare him to AP as it was when he was compared to ossie and jim smith at the time. Their respective situations are totally different…

SBR brought Robert and Bellamy, Dyer, Jenas, Woodgate and did us all proud imo. SBR getting sacked was the day this club went down hill for me. Ashley has to understand he needs to spend more in order to compete. He has to take responsibility for not replacing Ba and not backing his manager financially and getting players over the line. Hiring Joe Kinnear and also hiring Dennis Wise and losing KK. He ruined a take over for us to a better owner because he got pissed instead. He insults the fans after every chance he gets. He was the one that got us relegated and it’s his own fault he lost money.

Santon is right footed and a ‘defender’ but I’m not convinced that he is a RB that some people insist. (I don’t think he is a LB without Jonas defending in front of him and destroying the balance of the midfield) Dummett looks good and hopefully we finally have a new academy product that makes it but it is very early days. So it would be a choice of Santon, Tavernier, Haidara and Dummett at fullback. Mbiwa will play centrally for at least the next 3 games and Anita can play RB but I think sees himself as a midfielder. I wonder what RB Carr would have lined up, Kinnear would probably get that rat Phil Bardsley!
