Newcastle v Fulham – Premier League match preview

Magpies v Cottagers
Magpies v Cottagers
Fresh from tasting victory for the first time this season against Morecambe on Wednesday, Newcastle must now focus their attention back to the Premier League.

The visitors this weekend are Fulham and United will be looking to build on the 0-0 home draw with West Ham last weekend by taking all three points against the Cottagers.

Our league for has been atrocious reaching back into last season so a result is needed even at this early stage of the season. We’ve not scored a Premier League goal in five attempts and in truth we could still have been playing against West Ham now and we probably wouldn’t have managed to find the back of the net. We lack bite in attack, but perhaps a midweek win might just be enough to get some belief and confidence trickling through to the players.

Newcastle:

Loic Remy could feature from the bench and make his Premier League debut for us, but it’s the talk of another Frenchman that is dominating the headlines. Yohan Cabaye has reportedly been told to be prepared to play after refusing to play/being left out since the start of the season in the wake of transfer interest from Arsenal.

Steven Taylor completes the final game of his three match ban picked up for his red card on the opening day of the season although Jonas Gutierrez, Cheick Tiote and Massadio Haidara are sidelined along with Ryan Taylor. Mike Williamson and Gabriel Obertan have not been reported as being injured although their absence from any squad so far this season would suggest that they are.

Having made eight changes in midweek we are likely to revert to our regular side for this game which will mean recalls for Fabricio Coloccini, Papiss Cisse, Moussa Sissoko, Hatem Ben Arfa and Tim Krul among others.

Fulham:

Kieran Richardson, Maarten Stekelenburg and Fernando Amorebieta will not travel with the squad due to injury but otherwise Martin Jol has a full squad to choose from.

Previously…

Newcastle managed to beat Fulham towards the tail end of last season with Papiss Cisse scoring a winner in stoppage time. In terms of the Premier League at St James’ Park we don’t have such a bad record having won five of the eleven times the two sides have faced each other here in the North-East. Three draws and three defeats make up the eleven matches.

However overall, home and away in all competitions it is Fulham who hold the advantage. In total there have been 60 meetings between the two sides with Fulham winning in 26 of those compared to 21 for United.

Stats and facts:

The three previous league meetings between these sides in the month of August have produced 19 goals – an average of over six per game.

The Magpies have managed only one shot on target in total in the Premier League this season; fewer than any other side.

Alan Pardew has used only two English players so far in the Premier League this season, fewer than any other side.

Final thought:

Quite simply we need a win and it must come at any cost. Fulham will be tough to beat and present a threat to us in attack so we need to be careful whilst at least trying to pose an attacking threat of our own. Suffice to say, despite registering a win the other night, I’m not confident again.

Howay the lads!

Understand that #nufc have tabled a substantial bid for Florian Thauvin of Lille – target first reported in the Journal a fortnight ago.

  2. If this is our lot – as in we don’t sign anyone else this window and Pardew remains our manager – who reckons we will achieve top 10 as the club believes we will and who reckons we’re facing a season fighting relegation?

      (Quote)

  3. I reckon we’re facing a season fighting relegation if Pardew stays. If he’s sacked it depends on who replaces him and what his remit is. If it’s Joe he’ll probably last a few months then have a medical emergency. We’ll be well down in the bottom 10 at the time.

  4. Troy. I’m about as surprised at your disillusionment as I am at the clubs inactivity. Talk about stating the bleedin obvious. How you doing.?

Thauvin has been a long-term target of #nufc . Would end the window on a high if they could get something agreed .

  6. That’s part of the reason I don’t believe it Kimtoon. We would never begin with such a high bid. And I doubt there will be any bid at all unless Cabaye goes for big money (which he won’t). Arsenal won’t pay 20M or anything like that for Cabaye. Joe has to sell to buy no matter what Pardew says.

      (Quote)

  7. Troy, how are you disillusioned?
You renewed your season ticket in the almost certain knowledge that the squad would not be strengthened in this window and that Pardew and his team selection, tactics and excuses would have us in a relegation battle from the off.
At least you will be able to see Remy, and possibly a few goals from him until Pardew coaches him into a full back.

  8. Same ****, different bat-station.
Thauvin doesn’t want to come to the toon, but we’ll bandy his name about.

Do these journo’s think we are damned stupid ?

      (Quote)

  9. The only way to be positive about the club right now would be to speak nonsense. One loan signing so far and he’s injured. Cabaye not playing for whatever reason. No goals scored at home for 4 league games. Pardew and Joe both spouting nonsense. A completely out of touch owner. Denial is never the way. And neither is false optimism. Supporters should demand more from the club starting with Ashley, Kinnear and Pardew. They have utterly failed to bring the club forward.

  10. Troy’s disillusioned cos he’s back in the washing basket 🙂

Oh, and because the toon are run by idiots too…

  11. Doesn’t Andre Ayew play for Marseille?.
Is it possible that we have bid on Thauvin in a hope that Marseille offer us Ayew on a better deal to drop our interest in Thauvin – or is that just over thinking and over complicating the situation?.

I don’t know a great deal about this Thauvin kid but £12m seems a lot when you consider we wouldn’t pay that for Wilfried Bony?!.
I’d far rather we were spending £12m on a player who would get us 15-20 goals per season TBH.
If we were spending money on a midfield creative player I’d much prefer someone like Gylfi Sigurdsson who has fell down the pecking order at Spuds and has proven PL ability – and is still only 23yrs.

  12. The EPL have to do something about this transfer window ****. It deflects the interest from the actual issue of playing damned football.
I really HATE this transfer window arrangement, that it actually runs through the first month of the season is plainly ridiculous.

  13. Sharpy 17, don’t worry mate, we have no chance of getting either of them. Just another smoke screen from the media.

15 million euros for an untried French teenager. Someone needs there heed looked at.

  14. I have always maintained from day 1 that Ashley will bring mediocrity to the club. I’m actually disillusioned cos we aren’t even achieving that!

I put my hands up. I was wrong. 😯

      (Quote)

  15. Come on Joe, get some players signed before your hols after the window.. u deserve a few weeks off 😯

      (Quote)

  16. Yes it will be quite a climb to get to mediocrity Troy. I imagine it might be out of our reach with Ashley, Kinnear, and Pardew. The pressure on Pardew is enormous and won’t ease up unless we win several games and climb to mid table. There is no way around that for Alan I’m afraid. Each sub par performance will only add to the pressure.

  17. IF Cabaye plays, I fucking hope we don’t boo him.
…it’s the same old tabloid **** every window. If nowt’s happening, stir up a **** storm. We all fucking love it anyway. Drama is good for the brian.

…personally never believed the Cabaye on strike bollocks. Having said that, part of me wants us to lose so the FAT FUCKING BASTWAT might be spurred into opening his moth-bitten wallet.

…in fact, ignore that. It’s fucking welded shut with single-crystalline ultrathin gold Nanowires (diameters less than 10 nm), cold-welded together within seconds by mechanical contact.

…you heard it hear first. 😯

      (Quote)

  18. Wonder if these rumours about bidding for him have been done the day before a game to try and pacify the fans and avoid any ugly protest . 😕 just a thought like.

      (Quote)

  19. It’s all bollocks man.
    😆

…we’ll sign Ronaldo in 2018, when Noel Edmonds buys out Fatty.

(you herd it hear first) 😉

      (Quote)

  20. Well I think it is on the cards that Bent will score first and Remy will come on and get the 89th min equaliser.
Pardoom will be over the moon with a draw.
“make no bones, Fulham are a top, top team”
“not many teams will come here and get a point” 😳 😳
    Fucking clown 👿

      (Quote)

  21. Surely it would make more sense to, up the bid for Gomis than over bid for thauvin.
Nowt make sense like Ashley can.

      (Quote)

  22. somehow you’ve just got to laugh at the total utter nonsense of the whole regime.
Am I right to thinking no transfers ever happen over a weekend ❓
Is that why we have got til Monday lunchtime ❓

      (Quote)

  23. Agree with Troy 🙄
we are a long way off mediocrity right now.
Dreaming of the lofty heights of mid table. At least it is something tangible to aim for.

  24. Why if it isn’t old Bearded Bot, 😯 😛 with your omni left-ranged yet prose-like blog returns, I furiously revel. 😉

  25. Here’s to the long fight ahead for mediocrity. A noble cause. Sir Alan will lead the way.

      (Quote)

  26. Rod – I agree with you mate. Man Utd fans were fully behind Rooney against Chelsea and the Liverpool fans went daft for Suarez when he appeared at Anfield with his nipper acouple of weeks back.
If we are ‘the greatest football supporters the world has ever seen’ I don’t want to see us booing players.
We are all clearly ****** off with MA, JFK and AP – so why can’t Cabaye be as well. Don’t get me wrong, if he has refused to play then that’s not right – but I’m not convinced about that.
We were born Geordies, that’s our burdon to bear for live – but the players have every right to want away from a club who aren’t even achieving mediocrity.
I’m not saying we should make an extra fuss over the lad, but I would be really disappointed if there was booing – especially as there is a good chance he’s staying now.

      (Quote)

  27. Booing players is pointless unless it’s the opposition like. It doesn’t change a thing or help our cause ,I hope he doesn’t get boos tomorrow .

      (Quote)

  28. Sharps, let’s just hope the Cabaye **** is a smokescreen dreamed up on Fatty’s yacht in Monaco two weeks ago. 😉

      (Quote)

  29. …**** hope anyway. I started supporting Ipswich Town yesterday.
(admittedly, it’s so far away, but I believe).

#nufc sources saying that no firm bid for Thauvin has been made at this stage . Only interest at the moment say Lille.

    😆 😆 😆 😆 fucking laugh a minute with this circus like

  32. Well if anybody thinks we have bid for Thauvin they need their heeds checking.

We’ll end up selling Cabaye and we’ll hear the ***** about not having time to spend the cash.

      (Quote)

  33. …having said all that, I’m sure I’ll rant on about Pardew again even if we don’t get 3 points tomorrow.
…in fact I’ll probably berate him regardless as long as he’s our ‘talisman’.

    Tallywacker more like.

  34. I always thought it but this transfer window has confirmed the entire thing is fabricated for TV ratings, website hits and paper sales.

Maybe it’s because Newcastle have not done anything but this window especially feels a lifetime long and so ridiculous, it needs regulating. It also needs to end before all domestic seasons begin.

    It’s a farce.

      (Quote)

  35. We could start with not letting SSN link any players with any one until a firm Bid has been made 😉

      (Quote)

  36. Not to mention teams like Sunderland can sign 94 players with only a day or so of talk before it’s done while Bale, Suarez, Rooney and now Cabaye have a combined 5 years with no transfer actually taking place.

      (Quote)

  37. Pardew will be shooting his cocoa when the toon have managed to hang onto the world class midfielder Cabaye. At least until the January transfer window that is… 👿

Remy on loan will be the only “signing”. Perhaps a sneaky chance of taking Ba on loan…and Fat Boy Slim is laughing all the way to the bank…again…

      (Quote)

  38. FJ@127…. it’s really taking the gloss of the football to be honest. Something has to be changed, a clubs whoile pre-season can be destroyed in the final days of the transfer window. And when certain clubs have SO MUCH money available, it just makes for a bizzare situation..

      (Quote)

  39. We think we have it bad – think how Wigan have felt over the years when you look at the scouting they do to get unknown players, who then promptly get stole after a few good games.

If Wigan had kept all the good players they’d found from the Paul Jewell/Steve Bruce days, they’d be European chasers instead of Championship. It’s unfair the money is dominant and FFP rules will just enforce this more as those who earn more are the big teams and they will be the only ones who can spend more.

    Creating a football caste system.

  46. I posted on hear the other week about my friend working on a yacht. Ashley, pardew, charnley and Carr were all having a meeting on the boat, at st tropez. I asked her to keep her ears open. She’s just text me saying the fat cunts been screaming his head off on the phone all day, face like a smacked ****. It’s got to be because the cabaye deals falling to pieces before his eyes, he was obviously thinking about pocketing the lot. It could be something completely different and I know he doesn’t really get involved in the running of the club but when there’s a player sale on the cards and 2 days left in the window then I’m sure he’ll have more of an input. Whatever it is I can’t see him getting his **** out with regards to incoming players. Horrible ****

actually mate Lille DO want to sell him to us, and are unhappy with Marseille’s pursuit of him… but this is the only thing in our favour

    – Thauvin turned us down in Jan to move to Lille
    – He wants to stay in France and play CL footy
    – Marseille is in France and will play CL footy
    – Newcastle is not in France, have no euro footy and are in a relegation battle
