I feel slightly embarrassed calling qualifying for the fourth round of the League Cup a “cup run” but all the same we are still in the competition.

Unfortunately as reward for dispatching Leeds United we now have to face Manchester City at St James’ Park at the tail end of October – a fixture that will be sandwiched between a visit to Sunderland and the welcoming of Chelsea to St James’ Park in what could prove to be a defining week for United.

However this about last night so I won’t go too much further into the future and will instead focus on the fairly comfortable victory over Leeds. In truth United were easy winners without playing at their best but the job has been done and with Papiss Cisse finally finding the net I’m hopeful that will give him some confidence to take back into our Premier League fixtures.

Despite the comfortable nature of the victory it was the away side who very nearly drew first blood when Ross McCormack found space in front of goal only to see his lobbed effort glance off the crossbar.

Leeds tried to control the middle of the lark but United eventually started to come to terms with that and started to take control of the game themselves. Fabricio Coloccini saw a header from a Sylvain Marveaux corner cleared off the line before Yoan Gouffran headed wide from a Sammy Ameobi cross. Cheik Tiote saw an effort tipped wide at the near post and Papiss Cisse hit the side netting from a narrow angle after turning the Leeds defence before Matt Smith fired a warning to United, forcing Tim Krul into a save to deny the former Oldham man.

However, on 31 minutes, the home side finally made the breakthrough, and it was a goal that Papiss Cisse and his supporters have been waiting for over 1,000 minutes. Paul Dummett played the ball down the left for Sammy Amoebi who crossed perfectly for Papiss Cisse who nodded home from eight yards without having to break stride. Considering some of the sitters he’s missed in recent weeks, this was a decent finish.

Half-time: Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

It’s fair to say that the second period took a while to get going, but once it did the first real noteworthy action was worth waiting for. Sammy Ameobi played the ball into Yoan Gouffran. With his back towards goal the former Bordeaux man took a touch to get away from defender Scott Wootton before hammering a right-footed shot past Paddy Kenny and into the Gallowgate net from the edge of the penalty area – his first ever goal at St James’ Park.

That goal pretty much killed Leeds and the game as a contest but it the home side could and should have added more through Gabriel Obertan who was set free of the Leeds defence twice only to fluff his lines on both occasions.

Full-time: Newcastle 2-0 Leeds

All in all a comfortable win and a potential banana skin avoided. A decent enough performance without being anything special but it’s job done and we live to fight another day in the Capital One Cup.

  2. I fancied that Manure might struggle this season with the transition from Fegie to Moyes, but that Man City have been so unpredictable is a real surprise.
    Only goes to show that money isn’t everything, if you put in a shift you have chance.

  3. Moyes will be given some grace this season to bring his changes in, so he may not be expected to win the league or CL – but top 4 and CL qualification would be an absolute minimum I’d think. I know we are only 6 games into a long season, but based on what I’ve seen so far, I’m not convinced they will finish above Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs or even Liverpool at the moment. In fact, a couple of injuries to a couple of key players and I see them struggling to even get Europa football. Moyes looks out of his depth IMO.

    I think Moyes is a good manager, but he is a bit overwhelmed.

    Fellaini doesn’t fit into the team at all. Great player but not in this Man U team.

    Also think Fergie left Moyes with a thin squad. Isn’t a manager in the world that could get the performances Fergie got out of them. He was a master.

    Feel sorry for Moyes.

    Newcastle Turn Down Extra Cardiff Tickets As Away Support Continues To Be Decimated

    Further evidence of Newcastle United’s short-sighted and misguided policy on away tickets has seen Cardiff City announce that they are putting on sale 500 tickets for our match that should have see Newcastle bums on them.

    Cardiff report that Newcastle have turned down the full allocation they were entitled to and so 500 extra home fans will be supporting their team.

    Yes we have mentioned it before countless times but we will continue to do so time after time, Newcastle United’s/Mike Ashley’s stance on Newcastle’s away support is a disgrace.

    Newcastle United were once famous for the away support and the rare times the club takes a half decent allocation and sells them, the players and management rave about the support. Aston Villa a case in point with 2,800 black and whites helping to bring back 3 points.

    For those of you unaware still; Newcastle very rarely take all of the tickets they are entitled to because if you take the full allocation then there is some risk that unsold tickets will have to be paid for by NUFC. Smaller allocations mean less people travel away and get out of the habit and so it erodes the away fan base.

    In addition, the other massive barrier to regular large away supports is the disgraceful policy of making anybody wanting to buy an away ticket, also have to join as a member and pay £30 for a year’s entitlement.

    The very shallow justification for this is that Newcastle United then have the details of everybody who buys an away ticket and so it will help to stop trouble at away matches. Obviously this is a total load of rubbish as regularly fans don’t sit in their allotted seats and of course somebody could throw their ticket away in the ground and then of court misbehaving Newcastle would have no idea who they’d got the ticket off. On top of that, at home matches such as Leeds and Fulham, Newcastle fans could pay at cash turnstiles and the club didn’t have a clue who was coming into the ground – the whole thing is shameless.

    So with the example of the Cardiff match, if you are a Geordie living in the Cardiff area and it is the one match you are going to be able to get to; for two tickets in the away end it would cost you £70 for the two tickets, £60 for two memberships and another £2 thanks to the equally shameless practice of NUFC charging their own fans an extra £1 an way ticket administration fee.

    A grand total of £132 for two of you to watch Newcastle, or £66 each if your maths is a bit slow.

    This is I’m afraid yet another way that Mike Ashley is strangling the future of the club, whether it is on purpose or not. How can we hope to retain and grow our fanbase when our own club is putting so many barriers between Newcastle fans who want to keep a connection with their club. Not being able to watch their team leads to fans being alienated from their club and interest waning in buying merchandise, as well as brainwashing their kids into the Newcastle United way of life.

    Unfortunately, this kind of slow strangulation of interest only really registers for most people when it is too late, now is the time the club should go back to trying to ensure that as many fans as possible are there to back the team and ensure the long-term health of the club, both home AND away.

    Moyes knew what he was getting into. He is getting paid a fortune. 😯

    But what astounds me is, he has only been manager for six games and people are questioning him. 😳

  8. JJ – I also think Moyes is a very good manager, and done wonders with very little funds at Everton.
    But Man U look fragile this season and don’t play with the fluidity that they did under Fergie.
    I think he has a decent squad but he’s getting it wrong at the minute and I think Fellani was a panic buy, he’s the wrong player IMO.

    Troy – Hes lost 3 out of his 6 games so far, but like I said, it’s a long season. Yes I’m questioning him, but I’m not writing him off just yet

  9. This is already beginning to look like two seasons ago where the top teams are fluffing their lines and not going to get a huge amount of points.

    This may well mask the true level of our team as we could well end up several places above or below where we really should be.

  10. Also, since I am the main Obertan defender on this blog – people seem to forget he is only 24 years old. He is barely any older than Gareth Bale and people say he has years of development left so why is Obertan written off as an absolute failure now?

    Train him exclusively as a striker who veers out wide in the vein of Remy and persist for a season or two and I think he becomes a player who can get 10+ goals a season. His pace alone is rare and ridiculous and means we should try everything we can to keep him and get use from him before someone else does.

    FJ @ 309 I agree I was looking at the tables earlier and thought that this season will be the same type of season we got 5th. But on Oba I disagree we have all seen what Oba can do and speed isn’t the be all and end all , as for him training as a striker 😯 I think I would rather give young Campbell the chance.

  15. FJ I meant to also say that to mention Oba and his potential in the same sentence as Bale is OTT as Bale has been showing what he has and been producing the goods for yrs, what has Oba shown us ??? that he should maybe have picked the athletics in particular the 100 or 200 mtrs over footie 😉

  16. I am not saying his potential is the same as Bale anymore – just that people say Bale at 24 has room for growth yet we say Obertan, the same age, is the finished thing and can never improve?

    Where as Oba can improve from being a very average championship player to being a good championship player 😀

  19. Do we as a club look at sports psychologists to help players with low self esteem or do we just assume ignoring them, mispronouncing names and saying they aren’t good enough is a sure fire strategy to success?

    It’s seriously ridiculous. No matter what happens this season for Moyes then it must be ignored.
    He needs time to stamp his own authority and methods on the team. If football and life was that easy then there would be no interest in the sport.
