The Chronicle has today confirmed that Fabricio Colocinni will miss Saturday’s home fixture against Liverpool after sustaining an injury whilst away on international duty.
Colo was doubtful for this weekend, but it has now been confirmed that a groin injury will keep the skipper sidelined for the Liverpool clash at St James’ Park. The Chronicle do however report that the defender could return for the Mackems game a week on Sunday.
Alan Pardew spoke of the loss of his captain today:
“We have had an injury to Colo and he won’t feature this weekend?
“It is disappointing.
“We will see how it goes in the next few days.”
Newcastle have been anything but watertight at the back this season and there is no doubt that Colo will be a loss for us, especially with an in form front line of Luis Saurez and Daniel Sturridge visiting Tyneside. Pardew will once again have to re giggle his back line on Saturday and decide on two out of three between Mbiwa, Williamson and Steven Taylor, who has recently returned from suspension.
Newcastle fans will not need to reminded of what happened last season when Liverpool came to St James’ Park,we were simply ripped apart and humiliated on our own patch. It will be rather difficult to put in a worse display this time around and hopefully the team will be looking for redemption after last seasons horror show. Despite the loss of Colo for the fixture Pardew remains upbeat: “We should be able to cope” said the Newcastle boss.
I wrote a piece about Mbiwa yesterday and his struggle for form this season. Additionally Steven Taylor has only featured in one League game this season, in which he saw red in our opening fixture against Manchester City. Mike Williamson has made two appearances, one being a cameo against Everton before starting in the 2-1 win over Cardiff. I am one of the many that has been critical of Willo at times, personally I don’t think he is Premier League quality. That may be met with mixed reaction, but it’s merely my opinion.
Even if Colocinni hasn’t been at his best this season, I do believe he still has a great influence and brings a lot of composure and calm to the defense. But we will have to cope without him. Notably fellow Argentinian, Jonas Gutierrez will also be missing from the squad on Saturday for personal reasons.
What do you reckon? Who would you start against Liverpool?
