Colo set to miss Liverpool game.

Captain Colo misses out this weekend.
The Chronicle has today confirmed that Fabricio Colocinni will miss Saturday’s home fixture against Liverpool after sustaining an injury whilst away on international duty.

Colo was doubtful for this weekend, but it has now been confirmed that a groin injury will keep the skipper sidelined for the Liverpool clash at St James’ Park. The Chronicle do however report that the defender could return for the Mackems game a week on Sunday.

Alan Pardew spoke of the loss of his captain today:

“We have had an injury to Colo and he won’t feature this weekend?

“It is disappointing.

“We will see how it goes in the next few days.”

Newcastle have been anything but watertight at the back this season and there is no doubt that Colo will be a loss for us, especially with an in form front line of Luis Saurez and Daniel Sturridge visiting Tyneside. Pardew will once again have to re giggle his back line on Saturday and decide on two out of three between Mbiwa, Williamson and Steven Taylor, who has recently returned from suspension.

Newcastle fans will not need to reminded of what happened last season when Liverpool came to St James’ Park,we were simply ripped apart and humiliated on our own patch. It will be rather difficult to put in a worse display this time around and hopefully the team will be looking for redemption after last seasons horror show. Despite the loss of Colo for the fixture Pardew remains upbeat: “We should be able to cope” said the Newcastle boss.

I wrote a piece about Mbiwa yesterday and his struggle for form this season. Additionally Steven Taylor has only featured in one League game this season, in which he saw red in our opening fixture against Manchester City. Mike Williamson has made two appearances, one being a cameo against Everton before starting in the 2-1 win over Cardiff. I am one of the many that has been critical of Willo at times, personally I don’t think he is Premier League quality. That may be met with mixed reaction, but it’s merely my opinion.

Even if Colocinni hasn’t been at his best this season, I do believe he still has a great influence and brings a lot of composure and calm to the defense. But we will have to cope without him. Notably fellow Argentinian, Jonas Gutierrez will also be missing from the squad on Saturday for personal reasons.

What do you reckon? Who would you start against Liverpool?

  1. Nice one Mark – again! For me Mbiwa and Taylor. There’s definite deficiencies in there but the idea of Willo giraffing around fills me with dread. I’m surprisingly upbeat about this one. Their record won’t hold forever. We won’t be as bad as last season and every now and then we surprise everyone. 3-0 Man U 2-0 Chelsea. The key is not at the back – it’s starting Hatem and really going for it!

  2. well it cant be any worse than last season, i mean Borini scored…..with his first touch. So much wrong with that!!

  3. Mark – it was a Pardew master class that I saw. Couldn’t believe how many players we had high up the pitch with Coutinho and Henderson just waiting to burst past them all. A worse performance would be hard to imagine. If Pardew hasn’t learnt and we get hammered again he should be sacked.

  4. Cheers Mark.

Borini scored and Hendo got a double ffs!

To be fair to our defenders last time out, it was our terrible midfielders who put them under so much pressure by their lack of teamwork and work in general. Liverpool’s best players that day were Coutinho and Henderson even though Sturridge bagged himself a brace. When we were 2-0 down and brought on more attackers and they just rinsed through us constantly.

Hopefully this time we actually start off with more attackers, with Jonas out and Perch sold we are in some luck I guess. I think Tiote has to play and I would play Anita over Sissoko because of his poor form but I doubt Pardew will. Cabs is a must, then we have the headache up top.

  5. Agree Newkie – if Tiote starts he MUST stay deep all game. It shouldn’t be a headache up top. Cisse has been absolute pants all season with no sign of an improvement. I’d either play Gouffran, Remy, HBA or Anita into midfield and HBA Remy up top. Is that a headache?

  6. Georgio-is that 4-4-2 then?

By headache I mean if we play 4-3-3 Remy looks better on the left than he does leading the line, but I think Goof is also pretty good on the wing and there isn’t so much pressure on him to finish what we make. I know what you mean about Cisse, I have been a big critic of his for yonks but he did show slight signs of improvement. For some reason I actually think he might score this week. But if we don’t play him I would probably stick Remy up top and put Benny up against Johnson as he’s a worse defender than Enrique.

  7. If ever a game called out for 3CBs with Colo as a Librero and The other two man marking then this is it. Wit Tiote taking out Courtinho then we have a chance to build with 2 wingbacks, 2CM and HBA supporting a big man up front this is it. BUT No Colo, & No bigman up front. Oh well

  8. A difficult game no matter who we field but this doesn’t look promising. We will struggle to contain their attack for most of the game. Quick counter attacks may be all we can manage. It’s probably up to Remy to score for us although Cabaye or Ben Arfa may surprise and Gouffran has been very decent. Make it competitive lads.

  9. Mark ,nice article ,I know you never meant it but….. 😆

giggle – definition of giggle by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus …

    v. gig·gled, gig·gling, gig·gles. v.intr. To laugh with repeated short, spasmodic sounds. v.tr. To utter while giggling. n. A short, spasmodic laugh.
    ‎Giggler – ‎Giggled – ‎Giggle Out Loud – ‎Giggle incontinence

Who knows but I hope Pards or the Dippers attack don’t actually do that when looking at our back line 😉

Seriously, yes jiggle the back line , not that it will make much difference really as pretty sure this game is lost, would be thrilled with a draw tbh.
Regarding Colo I seem to remember him having a bit of a mare v the Dippers anyway.

  10. We gave them miles of space last season, as we did in the first half against Everton this season. If that happens again it could be a devastating result. Keep it very tight Pardew. The team has to move up and down the field as a unit. Big gaps in the midfield will kill us.

  11. Are we ready for 1 point from the next 4 games? Where would that put us in the table? Let’s see that would be 11 points from 11 games and possibly in 16th place. I hope that’s too pessimistic but with Colo out and Cisse completely lost we are utterly dependent on about 4 players: Remy, Cabaye, Ben Arfa (if in form), and Krul. It’s not promising, especially if one or more of them get injured.

  12. Too late to splash the cash Ash. So what are you going to do now? When will the panic set in? I don’t think it will be long now. But don’t worry Mike, there’s always Joe to talk to. He has many brilliant ideas I’m sure.

    MATCH STATS- Sunderland 1-3 Liverpool
    Match stats
Sunderland had more shots today than in any game since they played Blackburn in December 2011. Reasons to be optimistic?

if they can get at them so can we

  14. If teams can find a way to stop Remy we are dead ducks. I’m sure managers are taking a look at the possibilities. They aren’t all as thick as Pardew.

  15. That gives us a lift Kimtoon mate although the scoreline is a bit telling. Sunderland actually played well in patches in that game and just think, they have a new manager to face us. That’s why I’m going for a draw against them.

  16. Does anybody else think wor Alan will keep his nose buried in the little notebook if they score early on? Alan needs something bigger to hide behind. How about Carver? That might work. Just worried we’ll embarrass ourselves. We must stop their midfield supply to Sturridge and Suarez or at least reduce it drastically.

  17. Kim-I think we’ve had the most shots in the PL, or at least we had a game or two ago. Our problem is scoring. Would love to know Santon’s stats. 200 odd shots, 20% on target, 1 goal 😀

  18. I’m sure all the ‘fine and dandy, happy clappers’ will make excuses and say its fine, we can cope, we didnt need another centerhalf during the last window, our finances are in great shape 🙄

  19. I think Colo is as important to us as Kompany is to Man City and our defence will definately be weaker without him.
To be fair to Willo, be has played well the last game and a half he’s played against Everton and Cardiff, so he should keep his place. I’d like to see Mapou partner him, but I actually think that Pardew will select Saylor.
For consistency, I’d keep the rest of the team as was against Cardiff.

  20. Have a feeling Pards will set us up ultra defensively with a lone striker thus inviting pressure rather than easing it but hope I’m wrong and we take the game to them.

  21. Kim… I know I watched the game I was only kidding 😉
TBF Liverpool were poor that day but still never looked like losing at any stage, but I know what your saying, they can be got at and we are way better than sunderland 😉

  22. Kim – god 😯 if we can mirror the scum I’m certain we could turn the dippers over!. We have far better players up front. Hell with that many shots even Cisse might notch 😯 😆

  23. Firstly why is he holding a TV Ariel in the picture?

Secondly he’ll obviously be a major miss – he is captain and our best defender, but it does make the decision to ignore centre defence in the summer look like the decision it was – unbelievable!

      (Quote)

  24. Jonas out for Sat too!!
Pards says he’s back in Argie for personal reasons and won’t be back for the game!.

The squad is fucked, 2 players lost already shows how thin we are!, should have strengthened in the summer!!, fuck it lets march!!!! 😛 😛

      (Quote)

  25. Sharpy 😆

I would have liked Jonas on the bench but maybe him being in Arg is a blessing in disguise, not sure why he’s there but hope he’s ok. If he is suffering from homesickness then Bocca or Plate or whoever are more than welcome to him for a couple of mil 😛

Seriously though, it means someone who actually has a future with us should get a game and even if we lose, those are the players I want to see.
