Who would make your all time 11?

Who would make your team?
Who would make your team?
I was asked recently to pick my all time Newcastle United one to eleven. I think a friend of mine had been watching Fantasy Football Club with Fenners and tubby Newcastle hating Paul Merson, in which they ask players to pick the best they played with.

Something inspired him to ask me for my line up.I must say I thought about it long and hard, I’m 27 years old and in that time I have seen some absolute magicians…..I have also seen a lot of crap as I’m sure you can all relate. I realise that a thread like this is hardly unique and has in fact probably been done on here prior to this. But I thought I would share my team with you all, I have based this on players I have seen in my time.

Right, so I have gone 3-4-1-2 in what is a very attack minded team but hey it’s the only way I could get everyone in that I wanted. Now I feel this team would concede heavily but would score more than enough to compensate. So here goes, apologies in advance if anyone has already fallen asleep!!

GK- Shay Given– Pretty obvious pick, speaks for it’s self. Wonderful servant to our club and is a huge reason that we didn’t get relegated a lot sooner than we did. Shay resisted big offers over the years to remain on Tyneside, but finally lost all patients and left for Manchester City the season we went down. For a player that cost in the region of £1.5 million, we had a wonderful keeper in Given.

CB- Jonathan Woodgate– I genuinely think that Woody when he was fit was the finest defender I have seen in black and white stripes. It broke my heart when he was sold to Madrid, but given the money that was being thrown at us and the player’s injury record it made sense.

CB- Fabricio Colocinni– Captain Colo has been a rock for us, following a difficult first season in England. He oozes class, very composed and comfortable and a huge hitter in our current squad. Colo is the only current player that would make my team.

CB- Phillipe Albert– Albert is the last of my three at the back. The Belgian was one of my favorite players growing up. Like Woodgate, he wore the number 27 which strangely is my favorite number. Great character and if for nothing else he makes the cut for the infamous chip in the 5-0 Man United victory.

RM- Nobby Solano– So dangerous from set pieces, Nobby’s delivery was fantastic. So often given the responsibility of providing for Shearer, the little Peruvian didn’t disappoint. Bought for peanuts originally and enjoyed two spells on Tyneside. Genuinely loved our club, he reluctantly moved south to West Ham for family reasons after his second spell. I remember Nobby playing against us for Leicester in the Championship, we sang his name for the majority of the 0-0 draw.

LM- David Ginola – There has always been a bit of a debate on who was better between David and Laurent Robert. Both fantastic on their day, frustrating on others. For me Ginola easily makes it to the best eleven. He frustrated whoever was playing left back (usually Bez) with his reluctance to track back and defend, but on the ball he was a magician. I had his name on the back of the 96 shirt, I always thought it was such a pleasure watching him. I was very bitter when Dogleash sold Ginola, if I remember correctly there was personal beef between the two?

CM- Gary Speed– Speedo would of had his work cut out for him in this team, as it’s so attacking. Gary was solid and reliable, excellent passer of the ball and had an eye for goal too. I remember meeting Speedo when I was a kid and he was a top guy too, really had time for the fans. He was a proper role model and a credit to the game. Gary was finding his feet as a manager and was doing an excellent job with the Welsh national team. For reasons that have not been confirmed Gary was found dead two years ago. it is thought he hung himself, there has been lots of unconfirmed stories as to what happened. Sad sad loss either way. R.I.P Gary.

CM- Robert Lee– True Newcastle legend. Kevin Keegan told him Newcastle was closer to London than Boro was in a ploy to snatch the player away from the smoggies. It worked! Rob signed for Newcastle and went on to captain the club and become a big fans favorite. Probably my favorite player of all time. Once branded as ‘the best midfielder in Britain’ by KK, Rob was a pivotal part of The Entertainers who were irresistible in the mid 90s. lee eventually left for Derby.

AM- Peter Beardsley– I thought I would have Beardo in a bit of a free role, we all know Pedro had bags of ability. An absolute pleasure to watch wherever he played, another magician and another integral member of The Entertainers. Not much you can say about Beardo, he was pure class and definitely a gorgeous man! I did notice he had a fondness for using the word ‘obviously’ in interviews, haha.

CF- Alan Shearer – What can I say?! Love him or hate him as a football fan there is no denying how important this man is to English football. Still holds the record for most Premier League goals. Shearer showed an awful lot of loyalty to the club too, throughout his career he was constantly linked with moves away from St James’ Park. Once Big Al arrived for £15 million, he would spend the rest of his career at Newcastle United. Selection again speaks for it’s self.

CF- Les Ferdinand– We have had a few strikers over the years who could rival Sir Les- Tino, Cole, Bellamy even. But for me Les was superb, physical presence, good in the air and he formed a good partnership with Shearer. He’s another good player that fell victim to Kenny Dalglish. The striker was sold to Spurs when Kenny arrived.

So there you have it, had to miss a few out. I listed the strikers, also special mentions to David Batty, Kevin Nolan and apologies to full backs that haven’t got a look in. For me that’s the best in recent years. Not the most detailed thread, but just a bit of fun. Who would make your eleven?

  1. In 2001 there was Solano, Shearer and Robert all standing over a free-kick. Who do we have now? Benny is poor at free-kicks and Cabaye too inconsistent. Ryan Taylor out for two years as well.

  2. Ahhhh!!!! This is getting out of hand! 15th top scorer you say Premand? That’s bloody horrible. I’m chanting now to try to ward off this curse. Beg forgiveness for your sins Newkie and Premand. It might not be too late. 😯

  3. Batty 😆

Dave…Aye Ice is back today, mind at his age he’ll have forgot the password to use his laptop so wouldn’t expect him on just yet 😉 😆

  4. G2-You’ll be eating your words when Shola saves the day next week with a hatrick! We’re talking about legends and for the unwashed he is akin to a mythical beast that mothers use to frighten their children 😆

DJG-completrly agree with the set pieces. Cabaye can shoot for them but I’m still not convinced on our corners or drifted free kicks. Was it benny who put the ball directly out from a corner the other day? I mean ffs…

  5. Does anybody know anything about the incubus and the succubus? I was going to send them down into the land of darkness before our match. Munich mate Natrass in an all time 11? You might as well have put mattress in there. The older players and supporters are now devastated! I’ve got to shock you all back to your senses.

  6. Most League goals in a season
36, Hughie Gallacher, Division One, 1926-27

    Most Goals in a Match

    6 – Len Shackleton v Newport County (h), 5th October 1946 (Division Two)

Jackie Milburn top league goalscorer. All of these should be considered as well.

  7. Shola really does have some pretty appaling stats 😆 In fairness he probably has the record for most substitutions as well, although that also says a lot about him!

  8. Hmmm I’m mulling it over Munich mate. It might not be a terrible choice. But I won’t hear of Shola! Never I say! It can’t be allowed. If he can’t find his own jewelry at home he can’t be in our starting 11. I’ve seen him trip over his own legs. We can’t have that with legends on the pitch. Unbelievable. I’m very upset now. Well…. I suppose I’ll get over it. 😀

      (Quote)

  9. DJG 😆 Aye and he could well be just as frustrating! To be fair though he has looked decent and I think a lot of people wrote him off just because he was Shola’s brother which was unfair on the lad.

  10. If you really feel that way about Sammy you should do your hair up like him as well Newkie mate. We’ll look brilliant.

  11. Thinking about incubuses and succubuses has got me remembering that movie The Burbs with Tom Hanks. Some lovely bits in there. Driving your rubbish to the sidewalk was brill.

  12. Well that’s disappointing then Newkie. The Colo look is passé my friend. We’ve got to move into the future with Sammy.

      (Quote)

  13. Well I’m tired now. Especially this insidious nonsense about Shola. It just makes me a bit queasy thinking of him in our all time starting 11. I’ve got to think about this from a superstition point of view and get back to all of you. I hope it’s not too late. Dark clouds are gathering. I’ll do my best mates. Off for now.

  14. Just reading the sunday Mirror and their report on the march yesterday is on page 19 in the left hand corner, titled Fans’ fury at soccer boss. It fills a space roughly 3″x 2″ and contains just 57 words 🙄 . No words from march organisers , nothing .

  15. An impossible task. Too many to choose from, particularly in attack.

The only players I can say with certainty who’d make my best team (as opposed to best 11 – I doubt whether a 136 system would work in practice) and who I have also seen play (and I don’t mean in old b&w Pathe News reels) are Shearer, Supermac and Beardsley.

I think Rob Lee as well.

I’m sure that not a single one of the current squad would even make it onto the subs bench.

      (Quote)

  19. Kim, yeah they are terrible but unfortunately they are a real threat to those who choose to live in the bush.. Very few have good fire breaks and their houses fire ready..
Newkie, settle down, you are merely catching up after I knocked you off your perch earlier this season! 😆

  20. I remember going camping and seeing people set fire to eucalyptus branches to get a fire going and with the way the leaves basically explode its crazy to think how quickly the fires can spread.

Aussie, you can try all the bravado you like pal, you were giving it large just a few weeks back thinking you were already on the final sprint. I’ll be getting back my rightful no.1 spot in no time 😆

      (Quote)

  21. Newkie…Over here they’re usually started deliberately or by someone chucking a cigarette end or a bbq not being put out right.
We had a small one here a couple of weeks back and that took 3 helicopter and a plane 3 hours to get on top of it, and that’s living on a headland where they had easy access to water to fill up, losing battle I’d have thought when ya in the middle of nowhere in the outback 😕

  22. The fire in spain was Richie’s bbq gone wrong 😆 chuck another shrimp on the barby Richie

      (Quote)

  23. Where abouts in Spain are you Richie, are fires all over the country there as well or just the south? I can believe the deliberate fire thing though, wasn’t an 11 year old arrested for doing it in Aus before? I mean if a child can go out and start something that easily then there really is no way of preventing it, only preventing it from getting to your house.

    Aussie 😛

Well at least i’m not making it as obvious as Troy’s pro-Pardew posts 😉

  24. Aussie ,Yeah I guess not living near the bush is the best option ,why do houses get built there when it’s such a risk 😕

      (Quote)

  25. Richie 😯 you would be welcome at my place then mate, I love em..more for me
Newkie 😆 Troy is the king of tryers mate… not exactly subtle is he 😆

  26. Newkie…Javea, between Valencia and Alicante. You can get them from Madrid area down really(north of occasionally) but yep mainly in the southern half of the country.

  27. Kim, living in the bush is great!the problem with some areas is that some councils wont allow property owners to clear their land around their houses. Sad to see…

      (Quote)

  28. About as subtle as a kipper to the face 😛

Richie-so you basically live in Benidorm? I knew you were a classy fella 😆 I guess at least you’re close to the sea if the fires get too close!

      (Quote)

  29. It is Kim! The Victorian fires a few years back revealed real problems with council regulations. One house that survived those fires actually cleared their land (got severely fined) . Some councils dont allow much clearing to maintain the natural feel of the land. Its a nice thought but dangerous for people living there…

    Aye I suppose you’re right.
Can someone tell me when non-members can buy tickets for the Chelsea game? I’ve booked the train and hostel but haven’t been able to book the match yet, could it be that all the tickets will sell out to members before being released to the general public? 😕

      (Quote)

  31. Newkie… It’ a 50 minute drive and a I can’t stand the place, must be old age creeping in 😐 😛

Andy… 😉 I reckon Chelsea tickets should be on sale later this week, doubt very much they’d sell out to members so ya should be fine.

      (Quote)

  32. Andy-I highly doubt you’ll be getting an away ticket for Chelsea mate, you will have to sit somewhere in the home end if you’ve already booked all your stuff! 😕

      (Quote)

  33. Richie, that would make sense 😆

Train booking and hostel threw me off, forgot Andy lived in the wilderness!

  34. Imagine if Arsenal still had Van Persie, I think barring any defensive injuries they’d be favorites for the title. If it has to go to anyone but us I’d rather it was them, their goals yesterday were superb.

  35. Andy, I have heard that all the non member tickets are sold out. I have a mate that works in ticketing and he says they are all gone!

    Bramble

    Speed Lee

    Nobby Beardsley Ginola

    Bellamy Shearer Ferdinand Cole

I reckon with a front 7 like that we’d could still win games with Bramble at the back 😆 They score 9 we’d score 10
