Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini was seemingly ruled of out of Sunday’s derby with a groin injury, it was reported earlier in the week that the defender had even returned home to Argentina.
However Alan Pardew has now told the media that Colo could still feature in the Sunderland game despite it being practically confirmed that the player would be missing earlier this week. If this is the case it would certainly be a welcome surprise, especially since there was talk that Fabricio could be missing until Christmas with injury. This is what Pardew said in his press conference:
“Colo has had a really good week,” said the Newcastle boss. “If he’s ready I’ve got no hesitation about putting him in. If not against Sunderland, against Chelsea or Manchester City”.
With Steven Taylor’s fitness still a concern ahead of the fixture it has raised questions over who will start at the back at The Stadium of Light. Paul Dummett certainly hasn’t done his chances any harm after he produced a solid and composed performance under difficult circumstances against Liverpool last weekend. You have to give a lot of credit to the young man, who looked very comfortable in a position which isn’t even his natural one. Dummett traditionally plays at left back- a position that is currently occupied by Davide Santon.
Having Colo available for selection would be a massive boost to the squad and the fans who are very aware of the tough run in of fixtures we have coming up. If Taylor can prove his fitness too it that will be a bonus as we lack defensive options on the bench and another injury or suspension would leave us desperately short. Still it could be worse….Wes Brown is in contention for the Mackems!
Will Colo be ready for Sunday? Time will tell!
