Colo could still make Sunday

Captain Colo
Captain Colo
Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini was seemingly ruled of out of Sunday’s derby with a groin injury, it was reported earlier in the week that the defender had even returned home to Argentina.

However Alan Pardew has now told the media that Colo could still feature in the Sunderland game despite it being practically confirmed that the player would be missing earlier this week. If this is the case it would certainly be a welcome surprise, especially since there was talk that Fabricio could be missing until Christmas with injury. This is what Pardew said in his press conference:

“Colo has had a really good week,” said the Newcastle boss. “If he’s ready I’ve got no hesitation about putting him in. If not against Sunderland, against Chelsea or Manchester City”.

With Steven Taylor’s fitness still a concern ahead of the fixture it has raised questions over who will start at the back at The Stadium of Light. Paul Dummett certainly hasn’t done his chances any harm after he produced a solid and composed performance under difficult circumstances against Liverpool last weekend. You have to give a lot of credit to the young man, who looked very comfortable in a position which isn’t even his natural one. Dummett traditionally plays at left back- a position that is currently occupied by Davide Santon.

Having Colo available for selection would be a massive boost to the squad and the fans who are very aware of the tough run in of fixtures we have coming up. If Taylor can prove his fitness too it that will be a bonus as we lack defensive options on the bench and another injury or suspension would leave us desperately short. Still it could be worse….Wes Brown is in contention for the Mackems!

Will Colo be ready for Sunday? Time will tell!

  1. Because this is such an important fixture, it makes me think maybe Pardew is planning on playing a half fit Colo and hoping it doesn’t make the injury worse.
    😕

  2. Beardsley, I hope Collo is fit because this is some week coming up for the toon with the makkems, Man City and Chelsea in a week, followed by Spurs away. 4 draws would do me, with us beating Man City in the cup on penalties 18-17, with Joe Kinnear scoring the winning penalty 🙂

  3. Well with Chelsea and Spuds coming up we will really need Colo so I hope he’s not risked if he’s less than 100% fit.

  4. Only if he’s fully fit. I don’t want to risk playing him only to injured himself more and be out for weeks. It’s a huge game and of course we want our strongest 11 playing to rip them apart, but Colo is too important to our whole season to take risks with him IMO.
I don’t think they carry that much of a threat upfront for us to rush him back anyway

  5. Dave, aye it concerns me too, I said yesterday what with wanting to impress the new manager and the fact they are already in great peril points wise, it’s become more than a derby game for them 🙄 . Away too at that shit hole, it could prove a proper banana skin. Pound for pound we have far better players but they must play out their skin and approach it like they are up against a top 4 side not relegation fodder, Pards has to really get it right on the day tactically and motivationally but the players have to put a shift in.

  6. Another thing that could prove pivotal on sunday is the weather. With Forecast of gale force winds and rain coming in by sunday if the north east kops it bad then the ball will be all over the shot . Anyone know if the forecast for the NE is bad ,here in the south it’s pretty windy already and they reckon 80 mph winds coming 😯

  7. Oh and Tiote needs to not repeat last seasons sending off ,more of his performance of last week . Fletcher will be looking to wind him up again no doubt.

  8. It doesn’t have to be a great win for me but Poyet will think that his got a chance. I want some fighting spirit from the players. Not like last season but a solid performance. Treat them like Manu not scum

  9. Kimtoon, you’re dead right, the game tomorrow will be really tough, the makkems are still a hard running team despite their place in the league.
The clue to the game is how the ref handles the game, and that the toon finish with 11 men. We all know Tiote and Cattermolll like battering into each other, and the ref has to keep on top of that. Tiote too.
If we keep our discipline, and defend well, we have enough flair players throughout the whole team who with a flash of brilliance can win the game for us. But we have to put in the effort…

  10. Same formation as Liverpool for me, swamp the midfield and their lumbering back 4 will have no one to mark and will be unable to cope with our pace down the sides.

  11. MM, yes I will be hoping the ref has a good game too, fecking hate the derby, it makes me feel sick to the stomach like.

  12. Kim @17 – aye seemingly whilst the pope posed for photos with the scum shirt, the fan was in his ear asking for god intervention – hence the storm tomorrow 😆

  14. If we play well tomorrow we will beat Poyets rabble. If we lose it will be by our own making… We are a better team, playing better football…

  15. Huh! I thought Collo was in Argentina, fuck me you cant believe anything in the media – more stirring

  16. As much as I like Steven Taylor, doubts have grown with me over the years on his temperament. I’m not sure if he’d be TOO fired up for this fixture (?). His passion for NUFC, and particular beating the unwashed, leaves him prone to idiotic moments of madness. He can be a red card on legs at times.

  17. Prem, Good ain’t good enough.
I’d play definitely Dummett though. Probably at LB instead of Santon.
Still undecided on CBs. All down to Colo I guess. I think Williamson deserves a start.
