Game On! Newcastle v Manchester City

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
Good evening everyone. and welcome to this match article which will take us through every twist and turn of our Capital One cup tie against Manchester City.

Before I get onto the match tonight I wish to offer an apology.

You’ll notice there was no match report on the game at the weekend which is basically because I couldn’t bear to write about it. Fickle perhaps, but it was a hard defeat to take and I don’t wish to relive it. I’d also like to apologise for the lack of a match preview for tonight. I had planned to write it yesterday but by the time I finished it was 11pm and after working for 15 hours I was pretty pooped by the time I got home and decided to hit the hay before starting work again just nine hours later. One day I’ll win the lottery and not have to worry about money. One can dream…

Speaking of dreams, this game is about silverware and it would be nice to see us actually win something. Unfortunately though I’m struggling to get myself motivated for this because of the club stance on cup competitions which are, in their own words pretty much, not the priority. For me,we’re in it so why not try and win it?

To stand a chance of winning it though we first have to beat a side who we’ve failed to record a win against in eight years. Manchester City always seem to turn it on against us and no doubt we’ll transpire to give another insipid performance and limp out of what is most likely our most realistic chance of silverware.

The game itself is live on Sky here in the UK so finding a stream shouldn’t be too difficult. If you do find a good one then please share it with your fellow United fans by leaving a link in the ‘comments’ section below. Full team news will be published as and when it becomes available.

I’m not usually so downbeat but with everything that has gone on and continues to go on at our club I can’t help but feel disillusioned about it all. Hopefully tonight the players can give a performance that will start to heal the wounds suffered at the weekend, but this is a cup game and it’s only the result that counts, whether that comes in 90 minutes, 120 minutes, or even with penalties.

Howay the lads!

  1. Just one thing, why do people feel the need to say “City reserves”? their so called “reserves” are still better players than about 75% of other Premier leagues 1st teams and certainly better then ours, they actually strengthened their team by dropping Joe Hart and if you still insist on saying Citeh’s reserves beat us then really they only beat our reserves as that wasn’t our strongest team either 😛
…and while I’m at it how come when ever our opposition play poorly it’s because they’re in “2nd gear”, never us playing well and when we play poorly it’s purely down to Pard’s, never the player’s fault and rarely the fact that we are just playing a much better side?
Don’t get me wrong, I think Pard’s is an average(at best) manager but then we also have an average(at best), inconsistent squad and while the “fatman” runs the club I suspect that’s probably our lot I’m afraid. 😥

  2. Solano’s….What nae Tony Pulis on that list? 😯 surely that’s why he’s stalling on the Palace job because he think’s he can get the Toon job if/when Pard’s gets sacked 😆

Man City did play poorly, they were in “2nd gear”. Then, as predicted at halftime, they upped their game for 5mins & scored 2 goals.

It’s not like we got at them, we didn’t pressure them or press them when they had the ball. We had 2 decent periods during the game. The first 5-10 mins after halftime & 10mins before the end of extra time.

Surely you don’t actually believe we nullified man city & stopped them playing??

Both teams looked barely interested – perhaps because they played on sunday?

When we play poorly it is down to Pard’s, he’s the manager, it his job ffs.

The player’s get blamed too when they deserve it. It’s not like we’re stupid. I don’t see many people defending cisse.

  4. Man there have been some really dross comments on here after the City game. Had we taken our excellent half changes we could have been 2 up, that’s the disappointing thing about going out of the cup. Pellegrino took a huge chance and he got away with it yesterday. If Demba Ba had played yesterday for the toon yesterday we would be through to the next round. City created nothing against us until we ran out of power in extra time. Mbwia in the middle was taken by surprise that the City bloke managed to walk past Tiote and Debuchy on the wing, when the ball reached the middle he was caught out. Negredo may be worth 30 mill but Iron Mike had him and Dzeko in his back pocket, ably supported by Mbwia.
We have absolutely nothing in the final third, in fact it’s been that way for almost 18 months now.
