Oncs upon a time those two United’s used to be rivals and went toe-to-toe for the Premier League crown.
We fluffed it whilst the Red Devils didn’t and the rest is, as they say, history. Manchester United went from strength to strength whilst we fell away, but there will always be a part of me that is left wondering “what if”. What if we did hold out? Where would we be now? Would we have been able to take a seat near the top of the Premier League table for a more sustained period?
I guess it doesn’t really matter now. That was many years ago now but today is all that matters. As detailed in my match preview, Manchester United have been shaky so far this term but they do have a habit of performing against us.
They are without Wayne Rooney, who again has a habit of performing against us, but they still have dangerous players. Check out the full team news below.

On paper there has never been a better time to play at Old Trafford but I’m still not expecting anything. A better performance than what we saw at Swansea would be a start though.

I was down the fox and hounds. I was the only Newcastle fan there surrounded by 30 of them. I had a couple of Liverpool fan’s around cheering on Newcastle. I never seen so many angry faces but I walked out with a smug smile on my face. I was nice to them and said I have seen my team relegated and thought we might have got relegated last season. There not used to losing and I think the bad loser’s.

Stem, We know it was let slip that Europa and cups weren’t of paramount importance only survival so quite where our current position sits with our owner I can only wonder. And does Pards fancy another shot at Europa league?, I got the distinct impression he hates it and feels it wrecked last season for us. I don’t think it was directly to blame tbh ,moreover it was the lack of investment in the summer, we couldn’t cope cause we were too thin in quality players . If we do get a Europa birth it will be interesting to see if Ash has learnt from his mistakes and this time sets us up to be able to compete on all fronts. It won’t take shedloads of cash just a couple of astute signings, what’s the point even bothering if we aren’t gonna try to win stuff.

I know its too early to think about it really, but the Southampton match next week is a massive 6 pointer, and a real test of where we are.
I hope the Lads can play with confidence and without fear, but I think it will be a much tougher game than the manure one.
I wonder what Pardews game plan will be for this one.
Southampton press the ball well and deny time and space, plus they have some pretty good players of their own.
They have had a dream start to the season, reaching the lofty heights of 3rd, but come unstuck recently with only 1 point from the last 4 matches.
Lets hope we can continue to help in their decline, and send them packing with nowt.

Man Utd were floated on the stock market in 1991. In 1993 Man Utd won its first league title.
From 1996 onwards you pretty much had Ferguson’s Man Utd breaking transfer records vs penny pinching Arsenal. That was the title race.
Abramovich came along & outspent Man Utd. Chelsea won the title 2 times in a row (at first attempt). Mourinho’s bad relationship with Abramovich meant he got the sack.
Man Utd dominated the league again whilst Chelsea hired & fired 4 managers over 2 years. They got some stability under Ancelotti before he was fired & Chelsea hired another 3 managers in 2 years.
Same issue with Man City, lots of money & too many managers.
The writing was on the wall for Ferguson & Man Utd. Chelsea & City have won the title over the previous 4 seasons. Man Utd were fortunate nobody was around to challenge them last season.
This season is a different thing altogether.

On the contrary mate. My name might be KK but i’ve always said SBR was the best English manager in my lifetime. Better than Keegan.
Even during Keegan’s second coming, i said it was a mistake. SBR would have been the perfect option. This club would have been miles ahead if he had been appointed by Ashley instead, but too many fans were stuck in the 90’s so we got an unstable Keegan.
That’s why i’m still of the opinion that Pardew should be sacked & Fatih Terim should be hired. It was what SBR recommended.

Now I do get what you’re saying about those later years at Man Utd but that was only because of the success built in the early 90’s where they’d won nothing for years UNTIL Fergie popped up. They didn’t have the cash to splash then. They deserved their wins. It’s because of that and the globalisation of the Premier League that Man U have been able to blow everyone away.

I agree about the incredible things he achieved with Aberdeen. That’s why he was hired by Man Utd. He beat the odds & took the club above & beyond.
Did he do that with Man Utd? Nope.
The first title win at Man Utd came after they made a lot of money from floating on the stock exchange. As soon as they were floated on the stock exchange, the balance in the league was tipped in their favour. They had money no one else really did.
He did bring through a very good generation of players, but what else since then?
When you’re the longest serving manager, at the richest football club in the league, competing against someone as tight as Wenger, winning the league isn’t as difficult as it would be trying to win the league this season.

No attention needed here mate. I could understand a lot of Man Utd fans thinking Ferguson was god like but it’s odd to hear it from fans of other clubs!
Blackburn & Newcastle (almost!) showed that you can buy the league by throwing money at it.
The fact that Ferguson did not manage to win more than 2 Champions League trophies shows that (in his latter years) he couldn’t compete against clubs on a level playing field.
The 2 trophies he did win could just have easily been won by the opposition.

Sure he’s had more than his fair share of luck, but he dragged that club up to those lofty heights from nothing special and he kept them there for years and years.
He knew how to get the very best out of his players and got them to believe in themselves and his methods.
He ruled by fear, but got respect all the same.
To say he was NOT a great manager is just bonkers imho.
He was the best of his generation at the time.
To put it all down to luck and the failure of others is just plain ridiculous

David Moyes is not a terrible manager. He has a much harder job of fixing Man Utd than most people think. It looks like Ferguson jumped ship at the right time.

Ferguson didn’t drag the club anywhere. The league was bought most of the time.
Champions League won on penalties & freak goals in stoppage time. None of their own players believed they would win.
