Remy’s late relief! Newcastle 1-0 Aston Villa

Remy celebrates his late winner
Remy celebrates his late winner
Newcastle finally registered a home victory at the sixth attempt yesterday, but they left it until virtually the last kick of the game to do so.

A strike from Loic Remy in the third minute of stoppage time gave United the points after a forgetful game of football which had 0-0 written all over it.

To be honest I think United just about deserved the win on chances created as Paul Lambert’s pre-match proclamation of starting on the front foot never came to pass.

The home side were understandably edgy and the lack of confidence was visible in a first half which saw Loic Remy and Papiss Cisse spurn decent chances in front of the Leazes whilst Gabriel Agbonlahor will perhaps feel he should have done more with a couple of chances which proved to be Villa’s only real threat of the match.

The second half was a bit better with Vurnon Anita attempting to drive things on from midfield. However it was the introduction of another Dutchman that tipped the game in our favour.

Luuk de Jong offered us a link between midfield and attack and his willingness to close things down nearly resulted in the home side taking the lead after he robbed possession from the Villa defence on the by-line before squaring the ball across the box to an onrushing Loic Remy who had the simple task of guiding the ball into a half-empty net only to see his effort rebound off the post.

That was until de Jong’s deflected shot fell to Loic Remy deep into stoppage time. The French striker had his back to goal and was being marshalled closely by Ron Vlaar but his quick turn and thumping shot flew into the back of the net ensuring that it was United who picked up the points on offer.

All in all it wasn’t a great game and certainly won’t be listed anywhere near the top of our best performances, but it was a win which is what was needed above and beyond everything. The proverbial monkey off our back has been removed now and hopefully this result can inject some belief back into a squad that has lost direction in recent weeks.

Howay the lads!

  1. Santii-she is a stupid lass and complaints deserve a “cry me a river” play. However if this is true (big if) then I find it absolutely hilarious that Cisse was using The Money Shop. He’s complained because he knows he’ll now get more **** from the imams about picking and choosing.

  2. Fans get on his case because he’s been out of form. If he was scoring they wouldn’t care if he was accused of rape.

  3. Who’s getting on his back? None of the comments on the story are. If the implication is that I am, well, i’m not. I just find it funny for him to be surprised that a picture was taken in such a situation, it seems very odd to me. Remarkably naive of him when people and especially the media are bound to make a story out of this situation.

  4. Newkie,
Was just talking in general mate.

Cisse came back last week, after being out in the cold for a while.

For me he did quite well. Worked hard. Good movement. Couple decent shots. Then he missed a great chance. Harder than Remy’s miss IMO and there were several comments saying he should go.

I think he’s got a lot of people on his back.

  5. JJ-Alright then, wasn’t sure if that and 304 were aimed at me. I actually said after Remy first joined that if I found out I’d been cheering his goals/cheering him on only later to find out he was a proven rapist I’d probably be physically sick.

I actually agree with you, the break seemed to do him some good because for me his general play was better than I had seen in months, possibly all season. He did well to bring down a difficult ball and he had some decent passes. However just as people will ignore his general play and say he should be judged on his goals, when he misses like that it is disappointing. I actually agree, I think Remy’s chance was easier and I think had it ended 0-0 Remy would have come in for more criticism. But because he took a more difficult chance and got us the win, he has been spared criticism. I’m not sure the cisse criticism is anything new, just that we scored while De Jong was on and De Jong himself did well to set up Remy (for the missed goal) and then fortunately provided an assist with his massively deflected shot.

Just like Aussie ridiculed Mark last week cos Mark estimated the value of the advertising would be worth around £7m, I must take this opportunity to ridicule you about the 1% figure you gave above. 😛

It’s as reliable as Marks figure. You have absolute zero idea how much effect it’s had. 😉

  7. Re advertising … Maybe advertising just doesn’t work on me, but I can’t recall seeing any when I watch a football match on telly. I can’t even name which clubs have which sponsors on their shirts, even the ones I see all over the place – ManU, Arsenal, Liverpool.

The only shirt sponsor I know for sure without looking is Wonga.

… and The Coffee Club 😆

      (Quote)

  8. Bris-I know exactly what you mean. There are some people who can name all the sponsors at the drop of a hat. The only boarding signs I can remember for this season is SD from SJP and The University of South Wales in the Cardiff v Swansea match in the early part of the season. I picked up on it because I work there. Everything else other than a few shirt sponsors goes out the window.

I’m sure it’s a sign of a higher plane of intelligence or something 🙂

  9. We were talking about advertising in the pub just last week. I drink with a few guys who are pretty football savvy and who watch the PL regularly. Only 1 of the 5 knew what Sports Direct was, and he only knew because he’s a good mate of mine and I may have dropped the name once or twice.

Next time I watch the Toon play I’ll keep an eye out specifically for advertising. I’m now interested to see how often Sports Direct shows up on tv.

I thought Cisses all round play was better than ive seen in a long time, His touch was good and he didnt waste a pass.

      (Quote)

  11. Troy absolutely correct, but it’s not exactly going to be the mainstay of SD’s advertising budget is it.

      (Quote)

  12. BRIS@313 don’t know if you can remember a few years ago the yanks were stopped doing adverts while you were watching films in cinema they flashed the adverts in mini seconds you did not even know it,but it was found your mind took it in therefore when you went to buy a certain item you chose the one that your mind had taken in without you knowing,it was a good study to read, some called it brain washing, anyway its stopped now

      (Quote)

  13. Ice , you are refering to subliminal messages. They used the technique to help sell soft drinks and the like as you say.. id hardly say the SD advertising is subliminal, more in ya feckin face! 🙂

      (Quote)

  14. AMF lol aye but don’t forget there are some you need a hammer to knock something into their head but let’s not talk to much about Richie. 😆

      (Quote)

  15. Fair call Ice : please take it easy on Richie, it is not easy being able to lift heavy things and think as well 😆

      (Quote)

  16. I still don’t even see how subliminal advertising can work. I know it’s scientifically proven that you will more than not gravitate towards that product but…if you want a chocolate bar you will buy your favourite, based on choice surely. If you want a pint, same principle (or whichever is cheapest 😉 ) sometimes it just feels like companies are pissing millions into the wind, but obviously it must work on some people because they are huge companies.

Do people really buy cars because the company’s name is on a football shirt? Just seems a crazy world when tens of millions can be invested in something like that.

Mind you I say that about our marketing department in work. Why do you need so many people. Who actually goes to university because they saw an advert or read a poster? And more than that who decides on which exact university they will go to based on that. It’s crazy.

      (Quote)

  17. Newkie, I think it works mate, every time I drive past a pub, I think fuk I’d love a beer!
Re the movies etc.. I think they used to flash words like thirsty and hungry. Then you would presumably head to the snack bar..

      (Quote)

  18. Aussie-but that’s just a pub there. It’s not like carling posters draped on the outside tempt you in. You are tempted in to have a drink, I just don’t see how the advertising affects that.

In the cinema I know they will hint at all that stuff, but it just seems like something that might work on ten year olds. By the time you’re what, 16+? You should know then to buy all your stuff before hand from a cheaper shop and stick it Sheila’s bag 🙂

You know it costs a fortune at the event/cinema itself so you purposely avoid it. Or am I just a tight fecker?

      (Quote)

  19. AMF you got it all wrong with Richie he only thinks about doing things not getting round to doing them that’s where the Mrs steps in,thinking about anything other than food and drink tires him out very quickly he never would over tax his brain power

      (Quote)

  20. NEWKIE I wouldn’t say your a tight dealer, but have you still got that midwifes ring you nicked on the way into this world 😉

      (Quote)

  21. Bris,
Our brains trick us into decisions we are unaware of consciously making far more than we’d like to admit.

Most advertising is subliminal. I’ve had to study to launch our online publications and its ridiculous the thought that goes into the simplest things just because of how our brains work.

It all works on impulse. Most of the world buy on impulse or emotion. So wording, placement, colour. They all influence us.

Seeing Sports Direct in the background may not make you go out and buy from Sports Direct. But the more familiar you mind becomes to the brand the more likely you are to choose it over another when making an impulsive selection.

      (Quote)

  22. Newkie, you are just a tight fecker! 😉

Ice 🙂 poor Richie, at least he has his health! 😆

      (Quote)

  23. JJ your right mate things stick in some peoples mind and not others noticed one pundit calling sjp the SD arena during the game against villa, the arsehole

      (Quote)

  24. I actually gave an ex girlfriend of mine an “engagement” ring many years ago which was about £45 from Argos so I’m pretty sure I’ve been tight my whole life.

Not to mention one hell of a classy individual 😆

      (Quote)

  25. Ice-Yeah I picked up on the mention of SDA. Was he taking the **** or did he actually call it that?

Most commentators at least kept calling it SJP at the right so why he brought it up is beyond me.

      (Quote)

  26. NEWKIE you shock me to hear you “GAVE”anything away, had to be a return somewhere down the line, have you took that ring back to the pawnbrokers yet and made a profit

      (Quote)

  27. Icedog-aye it may have been payment in return for certain services at the time… Obviously I made sure I got the ring back, although not sure where it is now. I view it as a long term investment because the price of fake silver metallyplastic is rising all the time I hear 😀

      (Quote)

  28. Newkie, I am an advocate of treating em mean and keeping em keen but you took it to the next level there mate! 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Aussie-what was mean about what I did? She loved the ring despite the price tag.

That probably doesn’t look too good for my choice in women though 😆

They told me relapses are common as the condition is chronic in adults 🙁 they’ll just have to keep monitoring me that’s all .It’s the bruises that bother me really I look a sight the slightest knock and bang there’s another one 👿 Oh and the fact I look a tad vampiric 😆

  34. KIM but that’s well up on what it was mate hope it keeps going up,tell you a old footy trick to shift bruises I used,it works a treat, cotton wool dip in mouthwash.rub on twice a day bruise gone in two days. 😉

      (Quote)

  35. Agree Ice, I doubt he will get a start but he will be better for the experience. I watched him in the under 21 WC and he looks very a ssured on the ball but a little off the pace. He got caught out in possession a couple of times. Still needs a bit of time imo. He reminds me of Collo as a player.. not as skilled mind you..

      (Quote)

  36. Ice ,cheers I will give it a go, I think the time it takes for them to go is because of the lack of platelets though tbh, there’s just not enough clotting agent there.

On a happier note it’s my birthday tomorrow ,Hazel and Harry and Lewis are getting in a nice meal on the night, that’s one thing about the ******** they make me ravenous 😀

      (Quote)

  37. Aussie , One of the really blue bruises is on the cheek of my *** mate ,so it will be minty fresh when I ask Jabba to kiss my ****. 😀

      (Quote)

  38. We used to treat swelling and bruising with two bucket of water. One with warm to hot water and the other ice cold. 20 minutes in each and repeat the process. That works well also..

      (Quote)

  39. 😀 KIM a tip for AMFput shaving foam on your shirt collar and rub in it takes ladies make-up off,now that’s a whole diff ball game

@MsiDouglas: ..at the Stadium of Light along with matchday programme advertising at all home games.” Cruise owned by Mike Ashley, of course.
@MsiDouglas: Bet Cruise are paying for the perimeter ads!

Jeez you couldn’t make this sh*t up. Ashley is sponsoring the Mackem’s

      (Quote)

  41. AMF but your tip you don’t smell as nice as mine, plus a hate bloody cold water,I will take the less painful way

      (Quote)

  42. 3hours-Beat you to it mate 😀

But this is another scenario where surely there would be other, cheaper PL clubs to advertise at? Sunderland’s current shirt sponsors were paying a fair bit weren’t they? More than we were getting anyway. So cruise must be paying a decent wedge.

And he chooses sunderland which he knows will get back to him and probably **** us all off…

      (Quote)

  43. Newkie, He can’t help himself, he either suffers from constant foot in mouth disorder or he actually does get off on winding us up. Whatever I hope they charge him a shedload, the *****.

      (Quote)

  44. Ice, yeah, once you take your foot out of the hot water and chuck it in the cold it feckin hurts! But it gets the capillaries opening and closing and helps the blood flow.. any way how can someone with ice in their name be worried about the cold? 😉

      (Quote)

  45. Aye Newkie I saw your link, just thought I’d put up what Douglas had tweeted. Not sure what the Mackem’s shirt deal was mate but hopefully he will change their strip to blue, red and white stripes as well 😆

Ashley really doesn’t give a sh*t what fans think it is all just business to him.

      (Quote)

  46. Kim-this is why I honestly think a few of his actions are petty and intentional. I would probably be a ***** as well if I was as minted as him but these acts ensure that the feelings will never die down and prevent any reconciliation, if that was ever possible, it’s another thing to add to the list of what Ashley has done wrong.

The more they charge him the better squad Sunderland can afford, so unfortunately it’s lose lose for us.

      (Quote)

  47. Ashley actually owns the brand but do you actually think he has a say in the day to day running of the cruise business. He owns dozens of brands and would rely on good managers to sell as much as they can.. I am not backing Ashley, I just think he wouldn’t have a hand in the day to day decisions. The cruise company would have an advertising budget and they would choose where to spend it!

      (Quote)

  48. 3hours-it would be great if he would change their playing kit aye 😆 a nice earthy brown perhaps, or bright pink? But yeah I’m pretty sure their current sponsors were giving them a decent wedge and more than we were getting with Virgin at the time and what Wonga are giving us now I believe. There were definitely cheaper options for him-ESPECIALLY as sunderland might even get bloody relegated ffs! It seems unlikely now but they might be shelling out to a team who might not even be on TV ffs 😉

      (Quote)

  49. Aussie-I know what you mean and I think for the most part he will let them get on with it. But do you not think whoever was in charge would have consulted Ashley? He is ruthless and clearly a sensitive little flower, if this pissed him off he could easily sack the bloke. Funding the rivals of your bosses PL team seems like it might be a big enough deal to pick up the phone no?

Kim-you hate him more than Sunderland then basically 😀

I can’t really pick, both disgust me. A couple of mil is a pittance to him but might help Sunderland kick on to “the next level”…

    Yeah right 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  50. Aussie the management at Cruise would be fully aware of Ashley’s involvement with the Toon. You may be right Ashley might not have been directly involved but I would guess because of the link with us they would have run it passed him at least. Either way it is really insensitive. It is difficult to stomach an Ashley owned brand sponsoring our fiercest rivals.

      (Quote)

  51. Newkie , not since Maggie thatcher have I hated someone so much ,though this lot in power are giving it a good go 👿

      (Quote)

  52. Well both Benny and santon miss the hull game through injury,no great miss there then,Marv is fit, cannot see him getting a game anyway

      (Quote)

  53. Newkie, given the size of his business I don’t think they would consult Ashley at all. All ashley would be interested in is the bottom line. If they were making him money and growing, he would leave them to get on with it. I cant see him micro managing a billion dollar business. He would not have enough hours in the day…
