Why bother?

Ayoze Perez - One of many names to be linked
Ayoze Perez – One of many names to be linked
I’ll pre-warn you that this won’t be a long article, so if you’re expecting an essay then look away now…

Basically it’s just a small moan about transfers. Already we are being linked with this player or that player and people seem to be foaming from inappropriate places about it all. I’m just wondering why? Why bother?

Our transfer activity is poor to say the least. We’ve not signed anyone permanently for 18 months and our last meaningful foray into the transfer market came about because we were involved in a relegation battle. It’s not a progressive system, it’s a reactive one, usually reacting to a sale or a struggle.

Yet here we are again with articles popping up all over the place suggesting moves for players. Apparently the club are looking to get some early deals done but I’ve heard that before. I’ve also heard of offers rejected for some players, which again has been done before. It’s early days but we’re treading a familiar path already.

I’m not saying that we won’t sign anybody because clearly we will. I’m just suggesting that recent history suggests there is nowt to get excited about during transfer windows, or in our case they’re just called ‘days’, and besides the window doesn’t open for another month yet anyway.

I feel bad for saying this, like I’m sucking the fun out of all the transfer rumours, but the fact is that pretty much all of them will fail to materialise. Just chill out and enjoy the weather and forthcoming World Cup.

Why bother?

  1. Great to have you back on mate. But seriously – why bother? 😛
We’ll all just talk about what we want to anyway. Just the way it is.
The transfer rumours are just another thread in the rich carpet of NUFC life.

  2. Sky Sauces, Twitter ITKs, Barnettas never ending stay at jesmond dene house, Lee Ryders exclusives being hours behind the rest, Phantom bids and David Craig

Summer wouldnt be the same without it

  3. This is true. But for me the excitement and anticipation of a transfer window, or just normal days for us, has gone. We get linked with 100’s of players and **** about until it comes to selling someone where we’re off the mark like a virgin in a whorehouse.

      (Quote)

  4. True this is all just a cop to make people read the garbage it started with Delph and wieman then Perez then gomis and now Bent (can’t get a game at relegated Fulham most last season) now lazio defender the one that stands out to me is Perez cheap with resale value after a good 18month spell

  5. 99% of the links are just the media making stuff up to get hits or readers. I ignore most of it and really just rely on BBC Sport and SSN to let me know what is at least partially validated.

The young lad Perez looks likely but apparently we haven’t even put in a bid for Cabella so it certainly hasn’t been rejected…

The media knows that NUFC fans are desperate for signings so they’ll publish even more ridiculous links just to get us to read those articles…

  6. Every window I try to ignore the rumors but just can’t help myself. At least the World Cup should distract me some this summer

  7. Er…

Isn’t the window shut until July 1st anyway?

Two or three years ago someone counted up that we’d been linked with 153 players, none of whom turned up.

As the article says – why bother?

What cracks me up is when people get all foamy over some article or other as if there’s any basis for the clearly made-up story. Darren Bent? Outrageous! Just as it was the last 16 times…

Screw it. Buy a mountain bike and go have some fun.

  8. There I was the other day trying to sell the blog as the one last respite from the depths of negativity and then you go and publish this Toonsy. Cheer up boys, it’s bank holiday weekend!

  9. Toonsy ,I’m with you mate, it’s all BS until they are holding the shirt. I do have a good laugh/moan about who we are linked with though, I need to have a good moan and laugh every day, it makes me feel alive 😉 . I’m pretty realistic about our transfer business, I’ve seen enough now to know not to expect much if anything . As you say Toonsy ours is a reactive system, I do think someone half tidy will arrive if only because Ashley won’t be dumb enough to risk the second half of the season carrying on into the new one, least I hope not anyway. 🙄

  11. I’m tremendously excited about the window coming up. I think wor beloved owner will make a bid for Craig Bellamy now that he has officially retired. Then at least he can say we tried to get someone over the line. Or I suppose it will be wor Alan that actually says it. Has anyone else retired recently that we can put a cheeky bid in for? 😆

      (Quote)

  12. Do Gateshead have any players we could afford? I’m not sure. I had better ask Mike before getting carried away.

  13. What PL clubs have signed someone so far? I’m not aware of any and certainly no big moves.

Would be nice to get in a couple before the World Cup but it’s not as if our rivals are strengthening while we’re sitting on our arses.

It’s just that lull after the PL and before the World Cup…newspapers have nothing much to write about so they make stuff up.

      (Quote)

  14. I like the idea of an attacking formation led by Bellamy and Shearer. They are getting a bit older but experience matters mates! They have actually experienced putting the ball in the old onion bag! 😀

      (Quote)

  15. And let’s get Robert back while we’re at it. Beardo looks keen as well. What a side!

  16. Toonsy good read and I agree completely, as things are and have been what is the point, I have said it before but I wish I could get divorced from the club but I just can’t.

      (Quote)

  17. Toonsy, you’re not sucking the fun out of all the transfer rumours, there is no fun in the transfer rumours at our club.
I’ve learnt to fly past all the rumours on the internet, it took me a while to learn how to do it, but I can do it quite easily now.

      (Quote)

  18. Don’t give up lads! There is tremendous excitement in the air around Mike’s castle! He has plans for us. And where is my mate icedog? Has he given up completely or is he on holidays in Spain again? I’m getting quite concerned. 🙁

      (Quote)

  19. I don’t think the “Why bother” title should have anything to do with our transfer record in the last two windows (actually it was pretty good in the windows before those) but really it’s just the rubbish the media trips out. I’ll probably refrain from commenting on a potential signing until there’s something reported by BBC Sport or SSN…

      (Quote)

  20. My memory of Craig Bellamy…the evening after he slagged off Souness on TV, I spotted him in the Living Room in Newcastle town centre. Leaning against a wall as smug as you like with 2 burly bodyguards in attendance.

Bit of a d*ck but you can’t deny his passion for football and the effort he put in for every club. Besides, I didn’t like Souness either.

So good luck Craig, could be a good character in management!

      (Quote)

  21. If we’d have signed 2 that January and then the other 3 last Summer, what would people be saying about our performance in transfer windows? Just a thought…

      (Quote)

  22. We probably would have been relegated if we had only brought 2 in TDS mate. We were almost as horrible for the first half of that season as we were for the last half of the one we just finished. We should get Bellamy in as a striker consultant although he would probably spend most of his time rolling about on the ground laughing. 🙁

      (Quote)

  23. Can you imagine wor Craig trying to teach Cisse some ball control skills? 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  24. Aha! I thought so Kimtoon lass. He’s probably in a nice pub after a day on the beach as we speak! 😀

      (Quote)

  25. TDS, more to the point, why didn’t we strengthen before the January mass buy when we should of. ❓

      (Quote)

  26. KIMTOON

Definitely. Some bright spark at the club who felt that our youth team were good enough to make the step up. Remember those fantastic performances from Sammy, Tav, Campbell and Vuckic?

So what about if Debuchy and MYM had arrived that summer, Haidara arrived in Jan and Sissoko and Goofy the following summer? And say we’d finished in a similar position…

Bad transfer business then or ok?

      (Quote)

  27. I mean who would Bellamy actually consult with as wor striker consultant? Remy is leaving, Shola is leaving, Cisse is injured. Adam Armstrong would be one student I suppose and definitely Craig could help him. And supposedly we have this young lad Perez coming in. How about a senior striker or 2? Come on Mike, shock us all and spend some of the cash.

      (Quote)

  28. TDS… I’d say if they’d done it like then it would have been decent business, the way it was done though was bad business. Players bought in the Summer have time to settle in with the pre season(if bought early enough that is) and brought on slowly. If the club had done it that way then we hopefully wouldn’t have been in the **** come January and then you could have brought in 1 or 2 more and introduced them in to the team at your leisure and into a team doing ok rather than hoying 4 or 5 in at the deep end in a struggling team and a league they had no experience of. Hopefully they’ve learnt from their mistake, time will tell.

      (Quote)

  29. I just hope they are really busy getting deals in place ready to sign when the window opens. There is really no excuse this time and failure to land a few quality players will be nothing less than gross negligence imo.

      (Quote)

  30. Richie@39, I don’t know what you mean, I only read highbrow stuff like the Beano 😉

      (Quote)

  31. G2 Bellamys free mate and if we can’t sign him for free then you can kiss Gomis goodbye as well mate. After all this time people still have faith Ashley will buy someone descent or half descent.

      (Quote)

  32. I would take half descent because I’m not over ambitious anymore. It’s the affect of to much Ashley and Pardew put together.

      (Quote)

  33. RICHIETOON & KIMTOON

Agreed. Hopefully they have learned from their mistakes. Funnily enough didn’t Shepherd always leave signings until the last minute too? Speculation was that he felt he could drive a harder bargain and also save on wages but I wonder if he just enjoyed the excitement of transfer deadline day as much as the fans did…I think he relished his role as the supposed Geordie saviour to be honest…

**** right that we should try hard to get a couple in before the World Cup, whether they’re playing in it or not. No doubt our transfer business has been a bit sloppy in the last few windows and I wonder if Charnley is going to be any more organised and methodical in planning our targets. I live in hope that potential signings will have backups and backups to the backups…

  34. …or can he? 😯 😛

Whey it’s Friday here now therefore the Champions League Final is tomorrow, bring it on  …and it’s time for kip!

      (Quote)

  35. The operarive word in transfer rumours is ‘rumours’ – they should actually be called ‘transfer speculation to get hits on my blog/paper’. There’s almost never anything in them.

These speculations have nothing at all to do with the club (well, at least there’s no evidence that they come from the club), yet it seems as if people read the rumours/speculation as if they were truths – regardless of whether they later say they don’t believe what they read in papers.

The fact is, people provide links to the speculation then comment on them as if it were true. Something like: it seems were after Darren Bent http://www………. what a joke! Probably with Bellamy as backup. No ambition.

And this happens for many rumours.

And then later, when nothing eventuates, you get comments along the lines of: we were after loads of players but couldn’t get a single one over the line – incompetent gits.

There’s nothing wrong with speculation and dreaming of signings – no problem at all – but I encourage all people to be sceptical about rumours and not to base criticism of the club on them. All it does is show that you really do think the rumour is actual fact.

      (Quote)

  36. Bris…”There’s nothing wrong with speculation and dreaming of signings” and even discussing them but anyone who believes the speculative **** that is written in the papers and takes any of it as gospel before a signing is confirmed deserves to wallow in the misery and disappointment that follows.
But ffs Darren Bent, why are we after him!!! 👿 😛

      (Quote)

  37. CC
Haha, I’d forgotten about Barnetta’s 4 year long stay in Jesmond!

      (Quote)

  38. Richie on the brightside Bent would be a step up from Strolla 😉 I couldn’t get my head round all the calls on here earlier this week that he should be kept on as a coach, are we not bad enough at scoring that we need Strolla coaching them how not to score 😆

      (Quote)

  39. Dave…He’d be coaching them for the cup games, “apparently” we don’t want to score in them 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  40. Vegas what are you going on about? You clearly have not heard of the toon transfer likelihood ratio! Or TTLR for short. It works a little like this… if we are linked with a top name player, the TTLR bottoms out at “no fuken chance!” Now when we are linked with a **** player, the TTLR peaks out at “I cant belive we are signing that muppet!” So it is a bit more scientific than simply believing a rumour! 😉

      (Quote)

  41. KIMTOON

Oh yes…JFK…remind me what he offered to the club again? Other than a drinking and gambling buddy for Ashley of course. Less than a year in charge, slagged off the fans, withdrawn from speaking in public, 2 loan signings we’d previously been linked with and sold our best player. He was a MSA (Mackem Secret Agent) I reckon…

      (Quote)

  42. TDS – nah mate he’s just an idiot. I read all the transfer rubbish like anyone else but it does pay to remember that apart from the Internationals everybody in football, managers included is lying on some beach and doing their damnest to forget about it for a few weeks.

      (Quote)

  43. The transfer window doesn’t open for another 4 weeks or so, so Ts can’t be crossed and I’s can’t be dotted until that opens.
However – Chelsea have already sorted the deal for Diego Costa. That’s a pretty big signing.
WBA – have signed Craig Gardner on free – not as big a deal, but still a signing.
Stoke – have signed Phil Bardsley, and are on the verge of signing Mame Diouf and Riveire.

      (Quote)

  44. Congratulations and good luck to Bellaz on his retirement as well.
He was good mates with a friend of mine who worked the door at Bar 38 on the quayside and I spent few nights on the **** with him. He was a worky little get on the pitch but a decent bloke off it. My mate is a member of our cricket club and Bellaz helped him out with alot of fund raising and charity night with talk ins with him and afew of the players.

Also, disgusted in Uruguay FA coming out with those comments and putting Dummett in that kind of position!!.
Absolute disgrace, and if any action can be taken against them, I hope we do!.

      (Quote)

  45. GEORGIO

Yeah…I think you’re right, he is an idiot. Hopefully we won’t see him involved with football again.

Not many matches for the papers to write about for a few weeks, most people on holiday so transfer business is slow…yet the papers still manage to write just as many articles…clearly most of them are rubbish.

      (Quote)

  46. Sharpy17

Is the Costa deal actually finalised? I didn’t think it was.

I also thought that contracts can be signed now but a player’s registration can’t actually be transferred until 1st July, so presumably there’s still a possible get-out (although rarely taken as it would be very poor form). So presumably players can’t begin to train with their new club until they’re registered etc.

      (Quote)

  47. TDS – my understanding is that the Costa deal is as far as they can take it outside the transfer window – ie the papers are drawn up and just waiting to be signed. Chelsea have obviously moved fast expecting him to be in demand, especially if he has a good WC with Spain.
Maybe that could actually be a good thing for us, if we are after Demba Ba
    – Costa in Ba out.
I’m just waiting SSN mate and Cardiff have announced the signing of a player as well. So deals are certainly getting done.

I know we are working on the Perez deal, but with respect to the lad it’s senior strikers we need to be getting in as a priority.

      (Quote)

  48. SHARPY17

I imagine the Perez deal won’t be announced until their season is over, just as the Costa deal probably won’t be announced until after the CL final.

I’m not sure if I hold with the idea that the WC makes players more in demand. It used to be the case when scouting was limited so a WC might provide a way for a player to announce himself to the world but I can’t imagine there are many players in the WC that the PL clubs wouldn’t know about. Maybe for one of the obscure teams but I can’t imagine the top European clubs would be more interested in Costa if he does well in the WC.

Hopefully we can get someone in soon. The natives are getting restless…

      (Quote)

  49. TDS – would you take Diouf on a free transfer? 26yrs old and scored 25 goals in 57 games for Hanover.

    What about Rivière?

Or Swansea have reportedly agreed a £7m fee for Michy Batshuayi?.

      (Quote)

  50. Bris@49, Agree mostly apart from when you say,
“And then later, when nothing eventuates, you get comments along the lines of: we were after loads of players but couldn’t get a single one over the line – incompetent gits.”

Thing is if no one comes in fit for the first team then the fans have every right to accuse the club of being incompetent gits. It would also show we weren’t actively working enough to get players in since it shouldn’t be that hard as even the shittiest of teams get bodies in 😉

      (Quote)

  51. TDS- Ashley hiring Kinnear doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. If he felt that guilty about his heart attack then he should have just given him the money without employing him. Hopefully Mike’s learnt his lesson now about hiring DoF’s

      (Quote)

  52. Terry – Ashley was watching his friend going down hill fast after the death of his son. Ashley employed Joe to try and give him a purpose in life again. I’m not saying he was right, of course he wasn’t and it clearly didn’t work. It was hurried through which is why Pardew knew nowt about it, and it was a bad call which is why DL left. But Ashley was trying to help or save his mate, he just picked the wrong role to give him – way too high profile and in the public eye.

← Newcastle Still Interested in Senegal Midfielder Newcastle Complete Pre-Season Fixture Arrangements
1:52 pm, Friday, May 23rd, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 1 Comment
Newcastle United will play Spanish side Real Sociedad at St. James’ Park on Sunday, 10th August, the weekend before the Premier League kicks off, and they have now arranged all their pre-season fixtures.

The game will kick off at 1:30 pm and it’s odd in that it’s the only home fixture of a very good eight game pre-season fixture list.

Managing Director Lee Charnley has done extremely well to get all these fixtures arranged so quickly, so that fans can plan to attend various games this summer.

Real are a good side and they finished 7th in La Liga last season, but qualified for the Champions League in the previous season, and played Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen and Shakhtar Donetsk in the group stage of that competition last season, but didn’t progress.

    Here’s Newcastle’s full list of pre-season fixtures:

    Date Opposition Location KO time
Tues 15 July Oldham Boundary Park, Oldham 7:30 pm
Tues 22 July Sydney FC Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin, New Zealand 7:30 pm
Sat 26 July Wellingtom Phoenix Westpac Stadium, Wellington, New Zealand 4:30 pm
Wed 30 July Sheffield Wednesday Hillsborough, Sheffield 7:45 pm
Sat/Sun Aug 2/3 – Two Games Schalke 04, Malaga CF, West Ham VELTINS-Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Germany TBA
Tues Aug 5 Huddersfield John Smith’s Stadium, Huddersfield 7:45 pm
Sun Aug 10 Real Sociedad St. James’ Park, Newcastle 1:30 pm

  54. Sharpy-I just don’t think Ashley is that compassionate to value a mate over his business, but then again it could be the only explanation.

It was a fucking stupid decision though if he thought it would give purpose to his mate- some of the abuse kinnear got was OTT, but it should have been completely expected by all involved. It was madness the first time around ffs.

      (Quote)

  55. Newkie , The guy was clearly knocked sideways by the death of his only son and I feel for him as he’ll likely never really get over it. That said you simply cannot come off with the stuff he did about the fans. Talk about how to win friends and influence people 🙄 😳 .
